My original family name is Neveu and was changed by my great grandfather to Nevue. Other members of his family kept the name Neveu while others changed to Nevue, Nephew. In French Canada there are spellings as Neveu, Neveau, and Nepveu.

I have a good amount of my family information and am willing to share with any of you if you think we might be related.

Earl and Anna (Gloss) Nephew--MI

Am looking for information on this branch of the family. They were in the Detroit area 1915-1925 time period. Their son, George, was raised by his grandparents (Gloss) no later than the 1930 census. I don't know when they died, or how.

William Ernest Nephew

I am searching for information on my ggrandfather, William Ernest Nephew born around 1851 or 1856. Supposedly William came from France to Pa. with his brother around 1875. William moved to St. Louis and his brother stayed in Pa. He was in St. Louis, Mo. working as a driver in 1876. His parents were Vieto and Hortense Nephew. William married Lucy DeGonia 1877 in Old Mines, Washington Co., Mo. They had 11 children. William died 1923 and is buried at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Old Mines, Mo.

AIKEN, S.C. — Dr. Charles T. Nephew, 66, of Crane Court, Aiken, S.C., beloved husband of Alice (Klispie) Nephew, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at his residence.

He was a native of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and was the son of the late Charles Theodore and Katheryn (Weir) Nephew.

Dr. Nephew was a graduate of St. John’s Academy, Class of 1953 and College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., Class of 1957. He received his master’s degree in education from the State University of Plattsburgh and his doctorate of education at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Dr. Nephew was Superintendent of Schools in Southhold, N.Y., from 1983 until his retirement in 1991. He previously served as Superintendent in Walton, N.Y., from 1972 until 1983.

Dr. Nephew was appointed by the Governor of New York to the Board of Trustee’s at Delhi College. He received the Educator of the Year Award in 1991.

Dr. Nephew moved to Aiken, S.C., with his wife in 1996. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and the Woodside Country Club.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Daniel Jacob Nephew of Boston, Mass.; a brother, John Weir Nephew of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; and a sister, Katheryn Nephew Chasse’ of Williamsburg, Va.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and will also receive friends at their home in Woodside Plantation following service Saturday. Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Rivers Funeral Home, Aiken, S.C. Interment will be private.

Memorials may be made to Hope Lodge, American Cancer Society, 269 Calhoun St., Charleston, S.C. 29401.

WEST CHAZY — Bernard J. Nephew, 66, of 191 Fiske Road, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Mooers on Nov. 6, 1935, the son of Benjamin and Helen (LaValley) Nephew.

Bernard married Doris Lucia on Nov. 5, 1955, at Holy Angel’s Church in Altona.

He worked for 10 years at Georgia Pacific paper mill. He then worked at L.G. Robinson Lumber Yard in West Chazy. From there, he went to work on Plattsburgh Air Force Base as a civilian firefighter then as a fire inspector. He retired in 1994.

Bernard was a member of St. Joseph’s Church and a past member of the West Chazy Fire Department.

He served the Town of Chazy in different capacities over the years, as tax collector, bingo inspector and, in the early 1990s, as code enforcement officer.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; two daughters, two sons and spouses, Steve and Debbie Stone of Dannemora, Ronnie and Bea Nephew of Rosendale, MO., Tim and Lynn Nephew of Plattsburgh and Robert and Kathy Porter of West Chazy; his mother, Helen Nephew of West Chazy; three brothers, two sisters and spouses, Edward and Joyce Nephew of Lady Lake, Fla., Benjamin and Shirley King of Ellenburg Depot, Joe and Theresa Baker of Plattsburgh, Roger and Donna Nephew of West Chazy, and Steve and Connie Nephew of Ellenburg Depot; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Bernard was predeceased by his father, Benjamin; a sister, Carolyn; and a brother, Lawrence.

Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in West Chazy. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Donations in Bernard’s memory may be made to the Heart Fund.

Moriah Center — Carol A. Nephew, 60, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at her home on Center Rd. in Moriah Center.

She was born on Aug. 17, 1940 in Port Henry, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Tromblee) Kelly.

She was retired from B.F. Goodrich in Vergennes.

She is survived by her husband, Cledas Nephew of Moriah Center; her mother Mary Kelly of Moriah; one son Marty Nephew of Moriah; two daughters, Cheryl Titus of Ballston Spa and Kelly Lane of Canton, Ga.; five grandchildren Travis Nephew, Regan Titus, Jared Titus, Paige Lane, and Logan Lane; four brothers, Francis Kelly of Port Henry, Robert Kelly of Mineville, Edward Kelly of New Fairfield Conn. and John Kelly of Saratoga Springs.

She is pre-deceased by her father Edward Kelly.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Harland Funeral Home in Port Henry. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Port Henry, with Father Michael Toth officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Moriah.

Donations may be made in Carol's memory to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad.

I am looking for any information on John ? Nephew who died between 1928-1930. He married Lenore Hampton in the latter part of 1800's, not sure where or which state that they got married in. Believe to be born somewhere in Canada? They had a son Allen Sears Nephew born June 4, 1908 I believe somewhere in Smyrna GA?? If you have any information please share with me.

NEPHEW is not a surname in my genealogical family. For what it's worth, I found in an old book written about the life of her husband, a minister to the Seneca Indians in the Salmanaca, NY area, the following information: Descendants of Governor Blacksnake for many years were know by the name of NEPHEW.

That you for sharing your family background with me. You've confirmed the fact the information I found in a booklet written by the widow of a minister who once served on the Catt, NY reservation is correct. My main interest in Indian culture and surnames stems from a family mystery I've been trying to solve for many years.

As a young girl, with my uncle, aunt and cousins we drove many times through the Kinzua valley prior to the flooding.
My uncle owned land and a farm house at the top of a hill near a place named Russell. I vaguely recall my teenage cousin driving me and three other cousins down a very steep hill where at the bottom we were able to view, out in a field, the statute of Chief Cornplanter. Often times, while the valley was being torn apart for the building of the dam, my husband and I drove through the valley. It was not a pleasant sight to see particulary in the movement of the cemeteries. If you don't mind telling me, where is the Hillside Cemetery located?

Looking for info on Clara who was born 1893, daughter of William Ernest and Lucy DeGonia Nephew in Cadet, Washington Co., Mo. She supposedly left home at 15 years old and moved to the Chicago, Ill. area. She only came home once and the family never heard from her again. The family always said she was involved with gangsters. Per 1910 Washington Co., Mo. census Clara was at home and was 16 years old. Per Letters of Administation in 1923, Clara's name was listed as living in St. Louis, Mo. Clara was also listed in the St. Louis City Phone Directory in 1923.

Hi,
I have found out just a little bit of info from my birthfather. His father's name is Donald Joseph Nephew and is French Canadian w/ possibly some Indian(blackfeet?). He (Donald) was married, at one time to Mary Bertha Talarico. He (my father) apparently never had much contact w/ his father or any with that side of the family. Is anybody out there that may know of or have heard of Donald? Hoping someone can help!!!!! thank you! Jamie
