Services for Charles Norris "Charley" Driver, 76, of Etoile, Tx will be held at 10 a.m.Tuesday, Sept, 19, 2006, in the Gipson-Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel, with David Burcham, pastor of the San Augustine Baptist Chruch, officiating. Gil Rector will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Rocky Hill (Sims) Cemetery.
Charley was born Feb. 19, 1930, in Lufkin, Texas. He was the son of the late Sellie Mae (NERREN) and William Ichabud Driver. He passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, in Etoile.
Charley graduated from Lufkin High School in 1948. He attended Baylor University on a football scholarship from 1948-1952 and earned his B. B. A. His senior year, the Baylor Bears played Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
He was a member of the San Augustine Baptist Church, San Augustine, Texas and the Baylor "B" Association and remained a Baylor supporter all his life.
He served as a first lieutenant in the Air Force with active duty in the Korean War. From 1956 to 1962 he was the offensive line coach for Baylor University and then was the offensive coordinator under Coach Hayden Fry, at S.M.U. until 1965.
Charley was an entrepreneur at heart and left the coaching field to help form Coaches of America Life Insurance Company. After many years in the insurance business, he became a successful home buider in the Beaumont area.
He then discovered a need for a local trucking company and formed Trans World Transportation from which he retired in the mid 1980's.
Charley was one of a kind. He could tell stories for hours and remember places and names of people and players that he had met over the years. He helped many a young athlete obtain scholarships at schools throughout Texas. When you met Charley Driver, you never forgot him and he never forgot you.
He was loved by many and will missed by all those whose lives he touched.
Charley is survived by his son, Paul Driver and wife Margaret of Nacogdoches, Michael Byrom Driver and wife Kelly of Lubbock; daughter, Melissa Ann Cross Whiddon and husband Calvin of Beaumont. He was the grandfather of Daniel Driver, Sam Driver, Mallory Cross, Lindsey Cross,Gunner Driver, Chase Whiddon and Cody Whiddon. He is also survived by Barbara Ann Byrom Driver, of Beaumont, mother of Paul, Michael and Melissa, Dr. Everett E. Byrom, brother-in-law, of Poteet, Texas and numerous relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents; Charley was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Anita Driver; brothers, Elton Driver and John Paul Driver; and son-in-law, Mike Cross.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Driver, Samuel Driver, Everett Byrom III, Craig Byrom, Herby Adkins and Keith Lowery.
