Hello all, especially Sharon or Terry, your mentioning a Christian Friedrich Neumann from the mid 1700s drew my attention. My g-g-g-grandfather was Christian Neumann (maybe Christian Friedrich), b ca 1775, d 1810 in Krojanke, Flatow County, West Prussia, married to Eva Rosina Domke / Hackbart. They had at least 4 children-- Johann b 1800, Rosina ca 1806, Gottlieb ca 1808, and Anna Louise, 1810.
Where does your Christian Friedrich come from? Is there any similarity here that you see to your family?
Thanks for any response.

Message from Board Administrator - NEUMANN

Hello, Just a reminder -
Please remember to add the surnames you are researching to the surname field when posting to the Message Board. Also, be sure to separate them with a comma - NOT a space, hyphen, or slash. Filling out the surname field correctly helps other researchers find your post through the search engine.

It also helps to have a clear & concise message title with names, dates, etc., rather than something like "Looking for Neumanns." If you notice your title has been changed, it was probably changed by me to make your search query more clear. That is one of the optional duties of an administrator -- I can change titles and add surnames to the surname field, but not the text of your posts. Obviously, if you keep in mind how best to title your post and remember to add only the surnames mentioned in your post to the surname filed, it will save me lots of work.

Remember, the Neumann message board is gatewayed to the mailing list. If you wish to reply to a post that was gatewayed, the sender might not see it if you only reply to the List. Some message posters do not subscribe to email lists, so be sure to check where a message came from and respond on the message board if that's where it originated.
Thanks.

For more information on posting:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/boardfaq.aspx#greatpost

http://boards.rootsweb.com/boardinfo.aspx?p=surnames.neumann
Hello Gisela,

I have moved twice since your post and have had two children of my own. Today is my daughter's second birthday and I also found Charlotte Czecziwodda's death certificate today. I also found your post online as I sat down to do some research. Please let's get into proper contact - and you may do so auf Deutsch, though mein Deutsch is schrecklich! My email is kirsten_is@xplornet.com

I am so interested to see the photos you mentioned of Charlotte and Ernst Walter Neumann and of their kids. I hope that we can connect. I can't believe that I missed this!

Kirsten Neumann Stephens
Foxboro, Ontario, Canada

This is basic info I have on my grandfather AUGUST JACOB NEWMAN who was from Zhytomyr (Volhynia). One sibling was Alex, but other names do not match the names you mentioned. Maybe cousins?

Newman was originally spelled NEUMANN, presumably changed when came to US. Hope it is helpful -

AUGUST JACOB NEWMAN

Born: 01-30-1883 in Neu Romanovka, Province of Volhynia, Russia
Married: Maria (Krieger) Newman on 06-26-1915
Died: 03-03-1972 in Benton Harbor, MI
Parents: Johan Newman & Anna Christine (Ikert) Newman
Siblings: Gustav, Theodore, Daniel, Alexander, Ottilie (Newman) Schultz, Martha (Newman) Heft, Adeline (Newman) Nowell
Children: Olga Helen, Emma Madeline, John, Reinholt Paul, Leonard William, Ruben

August was of German origin and of the Lutheran faith. On November 15, 1904 August appeared for fulfillment of military service in the levy of 1904. After drawing lot No. 804 he was accepted into the service as a militiaman. In November 1907 he and his brother-in-law, Emil Schultz, left Russia and went to Strasburg, West Prussia, where he worked on a farm. In May 1908, his family moved to Radmansdorf, West Prussia. In December 1908 he bought a ticket and sailed with his brother, Gustav, on a ship to the port of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. The ship's name was Mount Temple. It arrived in Canada on January 11, 1909. His last name was spelled "Newman", rather than "Neumann" when he arrived in Canada.

August later moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he met Maria Krieger who would become his wife. He worked as a carpenter. He built his son Paul's first home. He and Maria were members of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Benton Harbor, MI. In September 1967 August went to the Willow Fair Nursing home in Bridgman, MI. He died from a heart attack and is buried at Crystal Springs cemetery, beside is wife in Benton Harbor, MI.

NEUMANN from Flatow & Wirsitz Co., POS to MN & Schubin, POS

My own Johann Neumann family stem from Christian Neumann, b ca 1776, d 1810, Krojanke, Flatow Co., W.Prussia. Johann, b 1800, married Henriette LAMBRECHT and Susanne FALK, and had many children, some including my g-grandfather Johann Friedrich Wilhelm (1845-1938) who married Ernestine WITT and emigrated 1874 to Stearns Co., MN. The older Johann had at least 4 siblings, Rosina, b ca 1806, who married another Neumann, Johann Friedrich, formerly of Falkenwalde, Schlochau, W.Prussia. They moved to Labischin, Schubin Co., Posen ca 1829 where several children were born(Friedrich Eduard, August Johann, Carl Ferdinand, Johann Wilhelm born 1830-1838). I am just starting to research Labischin records.
Another sister Anne Louise (1810) married in 1836 Carl Mielke (b ca 1802?) and also moved to Labischin. One daughter so far is known (Caroline Ernstine b 1842).
Any further information on any of these families is much appreciated, especially Rosine and Louise Neumann.
Possibly another brother was Paul "Wilhelm" Neumann b ca 1804, married 1829 to Rosine GROSS, and known to reside in the area of Tarnowke, Flatow, W.PR., to 1847.
See my Posen list research page for more details and names.
Thanks for any help on any of these, and I am willing to share what I know too, of course.
To all Neumann Researchers - Neumann DNA Project

I am one of the volunteer administrators of the Newman/Neumann DNA Project and would like to make everyone aware who are researching the Neumann surname of our project, we are actively seeking new members and would especially like to get more participation from our Neumann cousins. DNA testing is a very useful and powerful tool when used in combination with traditional genealogy. With Y-DNA testing the project has been very successful at sorting out individuals into lineages, this is done by genetically comparing a male's Y-chromosome to others of the same or similarly spelled surname to see if they match and confirming a shared ancestry. Our project is growing quickly and closing in on 100 members. By taking part you could potentially find Neumann cousins in other countries, confirm you belong to a certain lineage or take your family history beyond where your paper trail ends. With each new member's results we learn more about the varied and exciting histories of the worldwide Neumann/Newman families. It is our hope that all Neumann lines will participate, not only for themselves but knowing they are helping future Neumann/Newman researchers as well. Our project's results can be seen at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/newman/results and you can click the tabs at the top of that page to learn more about the project and hopefully decide to join us. Family Tree DNA does our testing but you receive a discount if you order through our project. Since only males have Y-chromosomes only males with the Neumann surname (or similar spelling) can take the test. Women will have to recruit a brother, father, or other male relative with the Neumann surname to participate for them. If interested in participating we recommend you purchase at least the Y-DNA 37 marker test, though the more markers you test the better (we don't recommend the Y-DNA 12 marker test as it isn't enough to definitively tell if you are related to someone else). The DNA test consists of a simple painless cheek swab. If you have any questions at all feel free to contact me.

Matt Newman
Volunteer administrator
Newman/Neumann DNA Project

Charles Richard born c1887 His father on his death certificate was listed as industrial engineer?does this fit with your info. He had a sister Ensteena, Enstina ? born c1877 and there was a deceased female listed on Annie's death cert.
regards
Jenny

Paul Fritz Neumann, b1882 'Kalaxe' Germany

My Great Grandfather, Paul Fritz Neumann, was born in 1882 and my great aunt (Paul's youngest daughter) has told me what she knows. Paul was born in the town of 'Kalaxe'. I cannot find this town anywhere and was hoping someone could tell me where it is/was and where it is now - if it has a new name. Death Certificate says his birthplace is Germany. With borders changing, I wonder if this is true. Another guess is that 'Kalaxe' was in Poland.

Apparently two of Paul's older brothers 'died in a Kaiser's War in the late 1890's' and his mother 'sent him away so he didn't get involved in the wars'. 'He became a wigmaker and hairdresser at the Polytechnic in Paris, France'.

Paul's father's name (again from Death Certificate) was Hermann Neumann. Don't know mother's name.

Paul Fritz married Ada Crawford Elliot Whish (London, 1905) and moved to Australia and died in 1964.

Any light shed on the German questions above, or what avenues I should take next in my research, would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou very much.

breakthrough with birthplace location... is actually 'Kallies, Germany' and a search for this linked it with 'Kalitz, Poland' or 'Kalisz, Poland'. So a big thank you to our Australian National Archives for their records and for providing another big step forward in my family research!

One of my great grandfathers was Alfred Theodore Julius Neumann. I know his name and relationship through a copy of the marriage certificate. The marriage was to Sarah Hannah Lycett at the Parish Church, Erdington, Aston, England, 16th October 1893. I cannot find any other reference in census records to Alfred Neumann and was wondering if anyone had further information. At the marriage of his daughter Lilian Olga Neumann in 1920 he was shown as deceased.

The Friederich Neumann born 1865 appears to be the son of Friederich Neuman (b.1841) and Josephina Carolina Dudenhoffer. The sister of Friederich (1865) is my great-grandmother, Wilhelmina Neumann (1868). With the help of films from LDS, I have traced the Neumanns back for several generations in Sankt Ingbert. Would be happy to share this with you. Pls. e-mail me.

This website really works! After 9 years I just found my orphaned Dad's first cousin, 2 of his aunts, and a whole branch of may family that was amputated when my father's parents died.

My Dad lost his sister sometime in the 1960s - she left Germany and immigrated to the US and was never heard from again. It would mean so much to all of us to find her. Her name is Gudrun Neumann, she was born in 1940 in Konigsberg, East Prussia, and had two brothers - Wolfgang and Gerhard, and one sister - Sigrid. Her parents' names were Walter Neumann and Charlotte Czecziwodda, her father died in the second world war and her mother of cancer when she was only 4 years old. Any information anyone might have would be useful.

One's name was Sigrid, the other's name was Gudrun. Gudrun disappeared to the United States in the 1960's and was never heard from again. Is it at all possible, that your mother, Erika, could have changed her name? In my family, my father's aunt's name was Erika. Was your Mother an orphan? Just a thought.

Kirsten

I read some of the names in your Neumann history. My mother had past relatives named Frederick, Philomena, Rosie so I am wondering if there is any connection. My mother is now 95 years old and probably the oldest of the Neumann name in Australia.

Well, we may be distant cousins as my family records have my great grandfather dying in Redwood Falls MN in 1916. His name was Gottfried Neumann. He was born in Anhausen, Prussia. The towns in MN are only a few miles apart. However, I don't have very much family history on that side of the family. My mother Ruth Wildrick (McMillian Leonard, Neumann) Was born 10/12/1920 and died in 8/14/2006. So our mom's were about the same age.So that's all I have. Thanks for your information.

Re: Rudolph Neumann & 1st wife Wilhelmine Wolf, Gage CO., Nebraska

Mary, I believe we have spoken before but if not there are location similarities in our Neumann families. I'm following my GG Grandfather Wilhelm Neumann born 1845 in Elbing, West Prussia and his wife Justine Grabowski born 1852. They settled in Gage county Nebraska after emigrating in 1880 w/ their 3 oldest boys: Wilhelm, Johann, Henry (all born in West Prussia). I've found records that they also attended First Trinity Lutheran Church located in Blakely Twp., Gage County, Nebraska. Family documents say that the eldest Wilhelm Neumann's parents dies when he was young. I'm guessing that they settled in Blakely Twp. near relatives. I can't however find a connection. Marienburg, West Prussia is very close to Elbing West Prussia. If you have more information on Adolph Otto Neumann and Catherine Welk or Wilhelmine Wolf in West Prussia I might be able to find a connection.

Hi, I'm also searching for Johanna NEUMANN of Neustettin, Pommern who would be born about 1862. If this is the same person, then her first marriage was to Carl NIMZ (born 1861 in Persanzig in the Neustettin district of Pommern) and my grandmother, Louisa Maria was their daughter (b Sept 1889).

Pls email laurelbau@yahoo.com.au with any further information on the date and place of birth for Johanna NEUMANN

Neumann's from Silesia, Prussia to NYC and Long Island

Looking for descendants of Carl Neumann and Augusta Dummler or Augusta Wutke. Carl Neumann, born 1846, may have been from Bavaria originally but had at least one child, Martha Neumann, in about 1868 in the city of Tauer in what was then Prussian Silesia but is now part of the German state of Saxony, right on the border with Poland. Carl Neumann immigrated to the U.S. in 1871, leaving Martha in Prussia, and settled in Manhattan, New York City.

In 1879, Carl married Augusta, who in their own marriage record is named "Wutke", but who later in Martha Neumann's marriage record is named "Dummler". She was born in 1859, and census records state that Augusta immigrated in 1873 or 1874.

Carl and Augusta Neumann had at least one child, a son Albert L. Neumann, born in October 1885. Albert Neumann later married his wife Mildred in about 1918, probably in Brooklyn. They in turn had a son Albert Neumann, Jr.

Carl's earlier daughter Martha, and possibly another child, did immigrate the United States by the early 1890s. In 1892, Martha married Nunzio Portaro, who is my great-great-grandfather. I have no record of her after that, though she may have died or divorced Nunzio before 1898.

Carl Neumann died in 1908 and Augusta sometime between 1920 and 1930.

Census records show that Augusta was the mother of 3 children, only one of whom - Albert, Sr. - was still alive in 1900. Whether these are her own children or include Martha, I do not know.

Census records:
1880 - Carl and Augusta living in Manhattan
1900 - Carl, Augusta, and Albert living in Manhattan
1910 - Augusta and Albert living in Manhattan
1920 - Augusta, Albert, and Mildred living in Brooklyn
1930 - Albert, Mildred, and Albert Jr. living in Hempstead, Nassau County (Long Island), New York

I have detailed all this research because the Neumann connection to my family is very sketchy and came as a significant surprise. If you have any connection at all, particularly if you are a descendant of Albert Neumann, please reply to this message or contact me directly. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
