I have a record of an Alexander Ross, carpenter, who married an Elizabeth Taylor (nee Nevin) in 1850. I don't know whether Elizabeth was married twice. Their daughter Margaret Ross, aged 21, married John Moore aged 24,labourer, at Shore Street Presbyterian Church Donaghadee in 1881. They had 8 surviving children, one of whom, Mary Ann Moore married my grandfather James Hunter from Belfast. They had 6 surviving children including my mother, Harriet Prentice Hunter who married my father, Samuel Brown in 1940.
I don't know if this is any help in your research.

Thank you for your reply and for the helpful biography of William Nevin in the South Dakota book. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply, but I wanted to just let you know that I'm still looking for a Dever connection - no luck so far. I'll be back in touch soon, or feel free to email me at kmnevin@sbcglobal.net. I can send you a family group sheet and what I do have on William Nevin. Thanks again, Kitty Nevin

I am afraid I do not have the information with me (I am teaching in China at present) but at home I have a copy of a page from an ancient book of Irish pedigrees that said the name was attached to the office of Chief's messenger and originated in Galway. It is sometimes seen as MacNevin.

William A. NEVIN born 1876 Center Point, Iowa

William A. Nevin Biography

This biography appears on pages 208-209 in "History of Dakota Territory" by George W. Kingsbury, Vol. V (1915) and was scanned, OCRed and edited by Maurice Krueger, mkrueger@iw.net.

WILLIAM A. NEVIN.

William A. Nevin, of Custer, who is treasurer of Custer county and is also engaged in ranching and mining in that county in partnership with his father, was born at Center Point, Iowa, on the 22d of September, 1876, a son of William and Elizabeth (Daugherty) Nevin, both natives of Pickaway county, Ohio, the father born on the 19th of April, 1833, and the mother on the 27th of December of that year. In 1842 William Nevin accompanied his parents to Iowa and in his young manhood became a general merchant in Center Point, that state. However, late in the '50s he went to California and there engaged in ranching and mining for some time. Upon his return to Center Point he again gave
his attention to mercantile pursuits but in 1879 came to the Black Hills and located at Four Mile, a mining settlement west of Custer. He still lives in that locality and is engaged in ranching and mining. To him and his wife have been born three children.

William A. Nevin, the youngest, attended school at Center Point, Iowa, and when sixteen years of age became a clerk in a general store at that place. After spending four years in commercial life he removed to the Black Hills, arriving there in 1896. He went to his father's ranch and for seven years taught school. He and his father are partners in business. They are interested in both ranching and mining and as they are experienced in those occupations and are energetic and display excellent judgment their resources are increasing from year to year.
William A. Nevin, however, has other interests that demand the greater part of his time, as he is serving, his second term as county treasurer and allows nothing to interfere with the faithful discharge of his duties in that office.

Mr. Nevin was married on the 25th of October, 1895, Miss Rilla Mae Willis, a native of Rochester, New York, becoming his wife. Her parents, George M. and Ida (Wilcox) Willis, were both natives of the state of New York and the father was by occupation a traveling salesman, handling mercantile dines. To their union were born five children, of whom Mrs. Nevin is the eldest. She has a daughter, Elizabeth Ida, whose birth occurred on the 27th of June, 1908.

Mr. Nevin is a republican and from 1903 to 1907 was county auditor, while he has been further honored by election as county treasurer, in which office he is serving his second term. Fraternally he is connected with the Knights of Pythias and he is at present chancellor commander of the local lodge. Since taking up his residence in Custer county he has not only demonstrated his ability and conscientiousness but has also manifested attractive personal
characteristics that have won him many warm and loyal friends.

Robert Nevin (1819-1906) & Martha Stewart Nevin (1835-1893)

Still looking for any information on my Nevin ancestors. I've located their gravestone in Cumberland, Barron County, Wisconsin. They were left Ireland, went to Ontario, Canada, and then travelled to Barron County.

Their children were:

Jane (abt 1855) -- married to August Hart

Anthony (abt 1856) -- married to Lily May Patrick - stayed in Canada

Joseph (1857-1893)-- died in Barron County

James (abt 1857) -- married Rebecca Stewart from Ireland. They courted prior to leaving Ireland.
Another "Stewart"... any relationship to Martha??
She came from a family with many daughters. She came to the US at a different time than James did. They had a large family, and settled in the Cumberland area (Barron County).

Rebecca (abt 1865) - married Samuel McCoy. The "McCoy" name pops up quite a bit as well with the Nevin descendants. Perhaps a clue? They stayed in Ontario at least for awhile as they were listed on the 1901 census there.

Matilda Scarlet (1868-1953) -- my gg grandmother. She had a daughter out of wedlock who died in infancy. She then married my gg grandfather, John M Johnson. She was pregnant with their fourth child when he died in a horse/logging accident. She later married Carl T Germanson and had three more children.

If ANYONE has any information on the beginnings of this family, I would be so grateful!! I have quite a bit of info on those who settled in Wisconsin, but nothing prior to them coming here.

Thanks!
Sandi
skaduce@aol.com

Nevin - Fermanagh & Tyrone - Northern Ireland

Hello:) I am so hopeful to find information on my great-great-grandmother Matilda Nevin born 10 Aug 1868. Matilda was born in Northern Ireland to Robert Nevin (abt 1830) and Martha Stuart (abt 1832). Matilda emigrated to the United States, settling in Barron County, WI. She married my gg grandfather, John M Johnson in Barron County 20 May 1890. They had four children together (Hannah, Joseph, Albert & Ervin). John was killed in a logging accident when she was pregnant with Ervin.

Matilda went on to marry a man by the name of Carl Germanson. They had three children together (William, Martha & Ruby).

Matilda had a brother who settled in Barron County by the name of James Nevin. He was married and had at least one son named Samuel.

Matilda died in 1953 in Barron County and was buried at Barron Wayside Cemetery.

Any assistance is appreciated.
Thanks,

Sandi

I haven't checked this site for quite awhile.
The only Nevin name that I have is Albert ,who was married to my Grandmother's sister, Susan Doughty. I have not found anything on him or his family other than one Census, I believe it was 1910 and he was linving with Susan, their son Bernard Nevin and Susan's Father, Bernard Doughty. However, I have not looked for anything as he is not in my direct line.

Good luck with your search.
Ruth Dukes

Kitty,
I don't have anything specifically on the Nevins you mentioned, but have quite a few Nevin ancestors that lived in the Jersey City, NJ area and probably arrived from Ireland between 1851-1856. One of them was John Joseph Nevin (b. 1870 Summit, NJ), a well-known Jersey City Judge who was married to Katherine Walsh. Some of their children later moved out to the California Bay area, but not until the 1930s-40s.

Judge John J. Nevin was a son of Patrick & Rose Nevin (both born abt 1840-45). Possibly he had the siblings John, Michael, Catherine "Kitty" and Thomas and parents Michael Nevin (b.1799 IRE) and Catherine Burke (b.1801 IRE).

Maybe there's no link there to your lines, but maybe just keep it in mind in case something comes up!

Joe

Diane,
My Nevins weren't from Queens, but nearby Jersey City, NJ. Patrick and Rose Nevin came to America from Ireland before 1880 and in 1880 were living in Summit, NJ. Sometime after that most of their children were found in Jersey City and one, John Joseph Nevin was a judge of the criminal courts in Jersey City. From him would later descend John Nevin, the late former CEO of Firestone and Zenith. Who knows, maybe somewhere in there there's a connection. The surname Nevin doesn't seem to be tremendously common (only about 196 individuals in the 1900 census of NY and 53 in NJ!)

Joe

Patrick Nevin married Catherine LEHAN Nevin appear in the 1880 Census for Rockland Lake, Rockland County, New York and as Patrick and Katharine Nevins in the 1900 census for Orangetown, Rockland County, New York. They are one and the same with correct spelling NEVIN.

They had several children on both cenuses. For 1900, for example, they had:
Margaret, age 22
Katherine, age 17
James, age 15
Elizabeth, age 13

My grandmoter, Elizabeth, was born in July 1886 and is the Elizabeth listed above. Elizabeth married George REMMERS in July 1912. They first lived with his mother, Henrietta REMMERS on Closter Dock Road, Closter, NJ with their first 3 of 4 children, per the 1920 census.
On the 1930 census they lived in their own home on Everett Street, Closter, NJ.
Does anyone know of this family - Lehan, Nevin, Remmers, Brown? Especially NEVIN. I know one of the sisters married a CASSIDY. Katherine also married and at some point Maggie and Katie remained in NY State in the Palisades, Orangetown, Rockland Lake, Nyack, Haverstraw area.....
Any help is appreciated.
Jim Brown
jimandpat9@cox.net

Nevin family from Long Island City, Queens, NY

I am researching my mother's Grandfather, Robert Nevin. I have his name as Robert Harris Nevin (1918 draft registration for son Robert James), and as Robert Harrison Nevin Jr. (as witness on naturalization papers for a John Herbst). I have found the family on the 1900 census (wife:Frances R; children:William, Frances, Robert), but cannot locate any Robert Nevin prior to 1900. In the census it says he was born in New York, father born in New York, and I can't make out where his mother was born - looks like Ireland to me, but I can't be sure. According to my Aunt, he was Irish-Protestant, so it seems likely to be Ireland. I'm at a roadblock now, as I have no information on wife, parents or siblings. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can proceed? Anyone out there with roots in Long Island City in the 1800 - early 1900's?
Thanks
Diane Yanosik

She was the daughter of Matthew Nevin and Jane Cumming(s). My great Grandmother was Rachel Nevin King who immigrated to Canada with her husband Daniel Taylor in 1929. The Nevin name has been passed down as a middle name through the generations. I would be very interested to learn about any of the Nevin families in the Belfast area...there does not seem to be many.

Thank you
Erin
