NEVINS family in Clinton Co, OH - help please

Just beginning a search for family of James Nevins and his family. James was b. 1834 Ireland and came to Ohio in 1854. Five children, but looks like no issue. Mary 1859, James 1860, Gridget 1861, Thomas 1864, Daniel 1868. James Sr had a brother Daniel who was in the Civil War and died in soldiers hospital/home in Dayton in 1896. I do not know if Daniel ever married.
If anyone has any access to any BMD records for Clinton Co, I would appreciate a lookup of these people.
Many thanks!!

William F. Nevins & Mary B. Crays (Crayse?)

My cousin, by marriage, is looking for her father's parents. Alden Oren (Bill) Nevins was born in Hall County, Nebraska in Nov 1924. He was "farmed out" with other siblings after both his parents' death, and was raised by Lowell Sanford Nevins & his wife Lena, which are believed to be his aunt and uncle. Alden had a sister, Katherine, and Alden grew up with cousins Frances, Wilma (Cox), "Justine", and Norma (Snyder). At some time, some of the family ended up in Kittitas County, WA.
I am trying to find out if Lowell's brother, Edgar L. Nevins and his wife Bertha JACOBS Nevins are Alden's parents, but have not found a definitive link. I believe that Oliver Nevins is a family name. I do know William F. Nevins (b. 1853) & Mary CRAYS (Crayse?) Nevins (b. 1855) are Edgar and Lowell's parents, and that both were born in IL.
Thanks for any response, Nukechem57.

Do you have any information about Anna G. Nevins, b. abt. 1785 and d. abt. 1853. As best as I can determine she married George Sims, a physician of Kentucke and Macoupin Co., IL.
He, George Sims, was born 24 Nov. 1787, place of birth speculated as Greenville Co., SC. He died 27 Nov. 1885 between Virden and Modesto, Macoupin Co., IL He is buried in the Sims Family Cemetery Madison Co., IL.

Also, do you have any information about Virginia Jane Nevins, born abt. 1792 Kentucky and died 22 Oct. 1851 in Illinois. She and her husband, Austin Sims, are both buried in the Rogers Cemetery at Waverly, Morgan County, Illinois. They are thought tro have married about 1810 in Monroe Co., KY. He, Austin Sims, was born 6 Sept. 1790 in Greenville Co., SC. and died 3 Nov. 1878 at Blue Mound, Macon County, Illinois.

Thanks for any help.

Dear clairetb,

This is beyond excellent; if your gt-grandfather was a brother of Elizabeth Page Beard, then your great-great-grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Beard (I'm right??) and you are very much a 'missing link' to us.
Which of Thos. J's sons was your gt-grandfather?
We are descendants of Thos. Jefferson Beard's younger brother, Edward Derrel Beard - 1844 - 1927. There was a third, older brother (James Hamilton Beard).
I have studied Uncle Thos. J. Beard - some in our family traveled to Birmingham and met his youngest daughter, Mary Beard.
If this is indeed your line, please write 'soonest' to me.
My direct email is: loosechips@aol.com.
Thank you for finding this message!
Nancy (Beard) Wilson

Jim,

Willaim Nevins
born ca 1804 in Kentucky
died ca 1857 Nevins Twp, Vigo Co, In
buried UNK
His parents are Jeremiah Nevins and Elizabeth UNKNOWN

William's first wife was Mary(?)Biggs and they married
26 Feb 1823 and had 4 children

William's 2nd wife was Nancy Wallace and they married 1855 in Vigo Co, In. Willaim and Nancy had 2 children: John Robert and Samuel E.

The following are quotes from the book:

"Joel McCollister was made guardian of John R and Samuel E. I have a number of the documents regarding the estate of William Nevins, since he married my grandmother's sister Eva Adams who were the daughters of Harvey and America I. Seybold Adams. (Ruby Belt Cronk) See: Full History of Nevins in Volume II - Samuel and Anne Adams. See: Full History in Volume III - John and Mary Evens Adams by Ruby B Cronk."

"Nancy Wallace married Joel McAlister 26 Jan 1886. They moved to the state of Washington"

I can not find any additional information on Ethel Naff Ramsey in the book. However the 1910 Census list an Ethel Naff living with John and Cora Naff Raccoon township, Parke Co. It appears that Ethel was an only surviving child.

Additionally, there are some photos that have been copied onto John's page they appear to be of Eva at different stages of her life. If you are intrested in them, contact me off line JONEZ0805@YAHOO.COM and I will try to scan them to you.

Hope this helps in your search.
Deidre

Certainly, about two years or so ago, I wrote to the Parke Co., and Vigo Co. Courthouses and libraries for as much material they could muster about the Community of Nevins and the family of Nevins. What they sent back wasn't very much but it did show that there were two different John Nevins yet they were born very close to each other. One of them I identified as the grandson of Henry Jr. and the other was the offspring of another Nevins but was distantly related. I have put those records into a vault for protection but if you would like to talk more you can e-mail me personally and I will get those records as soon as possible.

She is buried in the Rosedale Cemetery. She and John were very instrumental in the settling of Parke County. The schoolhouse land was donated by them and when a new addition was built it was name Mary Doty. The had 8 children.
I do not know the names of Mary McClain Nevins Coty parents. I have very little information concerning Mary Nevins. Her middle name was McClain and she was born in Scotland in 1799, died in Parke County, Indiana Feb. 02 1875. She is buried in the Rosedale Cemetery (Rosedale was called Roseville in the early years). She married John Martin Doty in Vigo County April 03, 1823. The lived in Roseville, Parke County and had 8 children. Many are buried in the cemetery there. John and Mary were very instrumental in the settling of Parke County. They built and donated the land for the schoolhouse and when an addition was built it was named after Mary Doty. My line is thru the Doty family but I have not found very much about Mary McClain Doty in the Vigo and Parke archives.

No I'm not sure about the Mary you are speaking of I would need more details about her to check. I do believe that your John is related, but remember that back then it was common for cousins and other relatives besides immediate family to be recorded living in the house. It is very possible that this may be how your John ended up there. This where I believ we all need to come together in some sort of messenger to talk this out. There are about two other people working on the same line.

I'm not sure where my John fits. He was born 10 Feb 1820 and evidently married in Indiana. His first wife must have died there as when he arrived in Iowa in 1848 he had a son, Marion Francis @ 10 years old with him. He married again in Polk County, Iowa to Sarah Bennett, daughter of William and Martha (Murphy) Bennett. In the 1850's they moved to Valley Falls, Kansas where John died in 1870. So far I have been unable to fit him into any of the other Nevins families I have found in Indiana.

Do you know the names of Mary Nevins parents or who her brothers and sisters were?

I think that some how ALMOST all of the Nevins lines that I have been reading about my be linked and in my opinion, it all seems to be stemming from the two brothers that were at odds with each other or at least within that family. I'd like to get hear what everyone else thinks and see if we can all put our heads together and get to the bottom of it. We can all work through e-mail if you like or we could hook up on IM.

Thanks
Bobby

I would like to know if there is anyone who has absolute confirmation on any of this info. I believe that all of these Nevins names are going to be linked in some way.
Just in case my private e-message to you has been caught in your SPAM filter, I will reply here as well.

How very interesting that your grandfather was Al(bert) Tepper Nevins and that you have Tepper lineage on your grandmother's side as well. Perhaps together, we can unravel a few tangled lines.

Are you using genealogy software? If so, I can send you a GEDCOM to upload at your end. I don't have much in the way of descendants or ancestors. What I do have are a number of old newspaper articles pertaining to The Three Suns and a few other things. I also have photographs of the family's headstones except for Morty's. He was buried in the family plot but it appears that there was no one left to order a monument for him.

Do you have any information pertaining to Albert's mother, Celia?

Apparently, there was a grandaughter but I don't know whose child she was. Celia's obit reads >>NY Times Jan 11, 1962
Tepper, Celia, dear wife of the late Samuel, devoted mother of Al and Morty Nevins, loving grandmother.<< Sam Tepper's March 26, 1961 obit reads >>beloved husband of Celia, devoted father of Albert and Morton; dear grandfather of Cindy Jo.<<

Barbara

Thank you so much for your post. If you care to, please reply to me privately. I have some info on the Nevins/Tepper family. The father of Al and Morty Nevins was Sam Tepper, not Sam Nevins. I believe that Al and Morty took their mother's maiden name, Nevins, when they became two of "The Three Suns". What I have been trying to establish is the relationship between their mother, Celia Nevins Tepper, and my late FIL, Sam Nevens. I photographed the cemetery stones of Al,Sam & Celia as well as their daughter, Beatrice when I was in New York last august. I will be happy to send you the jpgs.

Bill - thanks for the suggestion. I have looked at the sons of Henry H. Nevins, Sr. as possibilities for parents of my John Nevins born 1820 who migrated to Iowa and Kansas, but so far have not found a place where he fits in. I, too, have always thought it was possible that he knew Sarah Bennett in Parke County, IN before they went to Iowa as they were married the spring of 1848 shortly after the Bennetts arrived there.

Beginning to think we will have to find a direct descendent that is willing to do a DNA test.

Which Nevins families are you talking about? Some may not have been related to the Kentucky Nevins families but certainly some were.

In a Nevins - Crooks family history by Ruby Cronk (found in the Genealogy Dept at Terre Haute library) I found that several of the earliest Nevins settlers in Vigo and Parke County Indiana were sons of Henry H. Nevins, Sr and Susan Marlin. Henry H. Sr lived in what was then Jessimine County, Kentucky (his property is now in Anderson County, Kentucky). One of the sons, John Monroe Nevins stayed in Kentucky but the others all migrated to Indiana.

By the way I am still searching for the parents of my John Nevins(born 1820) who went from Indiana to Iowa and on to Kansas. He doesn't seem to fit into the Henry H. Nevins information I have. Any ideas??
