Edwin C. Newberg and wife Julia Gotcher/Washington and Columbia Co's.

I am seeking info on Edwin C. (Carl) Newberg and his wife, Julia Gotcher. Their children- Joyce Evelyn, Frances June, and edwin Newberg. They are listed on the 1920 North Plains, Washington, OR census:
Newberg, Edson (Edwin) C. Head/WM/27/Marr./MN/MN/MN
Julia Wife/WF/25/Marr./OR/MI/Iowa
Joyce Dau/WF/4/S/WA/MN/OR
June Dau/WF/2.6/S/WA/MN/OR
Newberg, Chester(?) Brother/WM/19/MN/MN/MN

1930 Rainier, Columbia, OR Census:

Newberg, Edwin C. Head/WM/36/M-19yrs/MN/U.S./Sweden
Julia N. Wife/WF/34/M-19yrs/OR/U.S./U.S.
Joyce Dau/WF/14/S/WA/MN/OR
June Dau/WF/12/S/WA/MN/OR
Edwin Son/WM/7/S/OR/MN/OR
Gotcher, Wesley Bro-n-law/WM/30/Divorced/OR/U.S./U.S.

I am trying to help my brother-in-law, Edwin Newberg, research his family. He is Edwin Newberg the 8th. "C" and "W" are common middle initials for the Edwin Newbergs in his line. There is an oral family story that there were 2 NORBERG brothers that came to Massachusetts from Germany. One became a successful dairy farmer and was an influential figure in the community and the other brother went South (possibly to VA) and was hanged for stealing a horse. The remaining brother changed the spelling of the surname to NEWBERG out of embarrasment of the other brother's actions. Who knows? Could be some trueth in there somewhere! If anyone has any info, please, contact me. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Sarah
Harry Newberg

Hi all, I am looking for information on a Harry Newberg of the Chicago, IL area. All I know is that he had 7 children, not sure of birth order: Amanda Newberg Bennett, Josephine Newberg Doll, Gertrude Newberg Hubert, Ruth Newberg Halstrom, George Newberg, William Newberg, and Harry Newberg.

I have lost touch with Gertrude Newberg Hubert. Have tried to gain touch with Ruth Newberg Halstrom. As far as I know all the others are deceased.

Josephine Newberg Doll was my grandmother, she was born on 11/1/1905 and died on 1/5/1989.

Any information on Harry and his clan would be most appreciated.

I will post more information as I gather it.

Thanks!

Apparently, your family refused to change the spelling of their name. However, you should know that Burja and Buria are the same name. If anyone kept the original spelling that is also fine. It comes from Slovenia. The Russian way to spell the name is Bu(backwards R)a. In Russian the word means storm/tempest. I believe it has a different meaning in Slovenian.

My family comes from Asturias, Spain but we know the origin of the family name is Slovenia.
The reason your ancestor wrote Buria instead of Burja is because that is how the west spells the name. If anyone kept the original spelling well, that is also fine. Burja and Buria are the same name. It comes from Slovenia. The Russian way to spell the name is Bu(backwards R)a. In Russian the word means storm/tempest.
Well, I don't know much about my family history. I know that my grandmother came to America from Croatia in about the early 1900s and settled in PA, where she married and had 3 children. Then her husband died and she met my grandfather. My grandfather came to America about the same time as my grandmother from Croatia and settled in PA. Then they had 3 children, one died at birth and one died in his late 50s(in the late 70s). Now my dad is the only Burja sibling left. My uncle had 4 children before he died and my dad has 6 children.

I'll give you more information if needed.

P.S.
Michigan Newbergs

Lots of Newbergs in Michigan. They are Swede-Finns and almost all come from Vaasa,Finland. The family ,of course, came to Finland back when Sweden took over. Mine were Nygards as far back as I've gone. They then became Nygranns(others became Nygraans,Nygrans,)then Nygards, Newbergs,Nybergs(who called themselves Newbergs) and finally Newbergs.(others became Brunells and Newlands. My grgrandfather from Gamla Karleby(Kokkola)settled in Ludington,MI. His brothers and sisters settled in Fremont, Grand Rapids, Allegan, Holland, Greenville and then spread out everywhere from there. So, if you want to find a Swede-Finn from Vaasa named Newberg, you won't lose in the lower peninsula. You've got lots of distant cousins there.
