Newell DNA Project

Well I finally broke down and ordered a DNA kit. I have been researching the Newells across the Southeastern USA, especially those that claim North Carolina roots, for nigh on 35+ years. I have been brickwalled at James Newell born c1795 NC and apparently resided in Mecklenburg Co., NC where he met and married Sarah Boyd (born 1807) a resident Mecklenburger for at least from 1810-1820+ where she is easily identified on the 1810 census and from notes in Robert Boyd's (c1781 NC) Family Bible.

One small clue that I have is that my Dad (6/6/1914 AL) would pass for a twin of Paul William Newell (9/16/1918 MS) whose ancestry tracks back to Francis Newell (c1727) who came to Mecklenburg Co. in 1766 from Pennsylvania. However, there is only one known son of Francis that I've been able to find and that leads to the aforementioned Paul Newell family whose ancestors arrived in Pontotoc Co., MS in 1842. My James Newell ancestor arrived in Tuscaloosa Co., AL in 1830 and there is no known crossing or mixing of these two groups. My Dad and Paul would be exact 5th generation descendants of contemporary ancestors, i.e., either the same person, brothers, or 1st cousins, etc., who may have lived in Mecklenburg or environs.

During my research I have compiled an immense Newell database of Newells in NC, SC, TN, GA, AL, MS and others and would be happy to share my info with fellow researchers. I am looking for "a few good men" who might be willing to join the Newell DNA project. Go to "http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/newell/" for more info. Many warm regards, Jim Newell

P.S.: Help!

Walter Newell to Kansas

Erica - I'm replying here because somehow I can't respond to the Ancestry email: At the moment I have no clue as to why Walter would have immigrated to Kansas. There may have been some family kin who went before him, or he may have come across some opportunity to acquire land. Since my lines do not connect to these folks, I've done no additional research on them and only checked them to help answer Michelle's questions. I haven't tried to confirm it, but Walter had an older brother William and I did see a William from Wales in the same general vicinity. It would need further research. Walter was on several Kansas State censuses; 1905, 1915, etc. Regards, Jim N.

He and his family are on the 1900 Jefferson Co., KS at Ozawkie #48. I didn't look for him in 1880 so not sure where he was then. Regards, Jim N.

Hey, Erica - by strange coincidence I just finished checking this line (two days ago) for Michelle Newell and while doing so also saw your Ancestry post. I mentioned that I would give you Michelle's email address if she wished but she has not yet replied. Michelle is granddaughter of Charles C. (c1879 KS) => Nephi B. (c1899 KS) => Walter (Nov 1855 Wales) => Joseph (c1818 Llanllwchaiam, Wales) => Joseph (c1796 Wales). Hopefully you two can connect. I'm not related but DNA tests seems to pinpoint my family origins in the N. Irish area. Incidentally, any male Newells in your line would like to participate in the Newell DNA Project? Regards, Jim N.

To correct my previous post: It was the Newell cousins, not brothers, who married the Parlin sisters.

Levi Newell, Jr. married Sibyl Parlin. Levi Newell, Jr. was the son of Levi Newell & Ruth Burbank.

Caleb Newell married Phebe Parlin. Caleb Newell was the son of James Newell, Jr. & Jane Burbank.

James Newell and Levi Newell were the sons of James Newell & Abigail Nichols. Ruth Burbank & Jane Burbank were the daughters of John Burbank & Elizabeth Tower.

Does anyone know who were the parents of Susanna Battles who married Danie Newell? There were several marriages between the Burbank & Battles families. I was wondering if Susanna was a niece or cousin of Jane & Ruth.

Oops! Made an error there. Caleb Newell did marry Phebe Parlin sister of Sibyl Parlin who married Levi Newell. But their husbands were not brothers, more likely cousins at least maternally if not paternally. Caleb was the son of James Newell, Jr. and Jane Burbank, while Levi was the son of Levi Newell and Ruth Burbank. Jane & Ruth were sisters, the daughters of John Burbank & Elizabeth Tower. And possibly their husbands James Jr. & Levi Sr. were brothers, as James Newell who married Abigail Nichols had sons, James & Levi.

P.S. Help!!

Nancy -- I'm trying to "learn-up" about the DNA science. For the Newell DNA Project, it would have to be a male Newell descendant. They have what is called; 12-marker, 37-marker, and 67-marker tests. The higher the marker, the more absolute the kinship can be determined. It seems that the "best" for approximate kinship is the 37-marker test. I just checked and they have increased the price for the 37-marker test to $169 (the 12-marker is $119). They are occasionally "on sale" for lower prices. The 12-marker test just kind of identifies the areas that one's family may have been residing approx. 2000 years ago. But it does identify the "haplotype" which can trace the general migration/movement of the ancestral groups. The Newell Project has very few participants at the moment. Usually as more join in some make "donations to the kitty" to help pay for others. I'm still learning. Regards, Jim

Hey Larry -- Warren and Mary seem to disappear after that 1880 Bell Co., TX census. The only other family member that I've been able to track is their youngest Ned Benjamin. Ben and Florence were in Day Co., OK in 1900 and then Florence shows up in 1910 Roger Mills Co., OK as head of household, marked married but no spouse listed. Then she is still there in 1920 as "widowed" head of household. Ben disappears after 1900 - don't know if he is deceased. There is a Ben with approx. same stats showing up in 1920 Custer Co., MT labeled "single" and a stableman for a remount depot - don't know if he's military or civilian. Main reason I followed this family was to distinguish their son "Lee" from another "Lee" of same approx. age in my family group that were also in OK at the same time. Regards, Jim N.

Joseph, David, Silas Newell Hoosick NY

I am researching the Newell family that lived in Hoosick NY on the 1790 US Federal Census. Silas Newell (son of either Joseph or David) was born in 1783 in CT, married Judith Potter in Hoosick NY about 1802. Silas, Judith and 2 young children moved to what they called Newell's Settlement in Wyoming county NY - later renamed Middlebury. I have very little information on the family prior to 1809. Any assistance is appreciated. Diane

Silas Newell son of David Newell was born in CT 1783. By 1790 the David Newell family including Silas relocated to Hoosick NY. Silas married Judith Potter and relocated to Middlebury Wyoming county NY in 1809 and settled "Newell's Settlement. I am unable to confirm relationships on this side of the Newell family. Is there anyone out there that could assist me with piecing this family together. How does one obtain a marriage document from 1800-1809?
Diane

The second was Lydia Ann Edie and she was the mother of all the kids. It would be great to see if their is an actual genetic link between Ala and my James Newell ancestor. That may be the only resource we have left. Then if we could just find those elusive NC ancestors. Regards, Jim N.

It has been an immense help to me as I've researched my mom's (Carolyn Anne Newell's) line. I'd love to connect with anyone researching Ala and his kin.
