Newgards from NW Iowa

My maternal great grandmother was Johannah Eliza Newgard born in Norway in 1857. I don't know much about her or her family and would like to find out more.
I know she married Thore Colby, had 5 (Carl, Ella, May, Nora, Johannah) children from 1880-1890 and died in 1890 in Pocahontas County Iowa. The Colby family says that she came from Linn Grove which is close to Sioux Rapids where Thore Colby remarried, farmed and raised their children. Her daughter is my grandmother, Johanna Martina Colby b 1889 d 1977.

I found info on a Johannah Newgard from 1870 census. I'm not sure it's her but the age and birthplace are the same. This Johannah Newgard was 14yrs old living in Grantsburg, Wisconsin with a Karen Newgard age 53 (perhaps her mother?) and a John O Newgard age 24 (perhaps a brother?) There is another person listed in the household, age 25, name starts with an "M" and middle initial is an "O".

On the 1880 census form she is listed as "Hanah Colby", I know it is her since Thore is listed as her husband and oldest child is Ella.

I'd like to find out more about Newgards that may be related to her.

Re: Origin of Newgard

Thank you very much for your reply. This is all very fascinating and new information for me--I know little of my ancestry.

My father's name is Peter Newgard, currently living in Ottawa Ontario with my mother and two sisters. My paternal grandfather's name was Peter (though it may have been spelled with a "d") Nygaard. He came to Canada (Fredericton, NB) from Denmark. I was told the name Nygaard was being pronounced like "Nieu'-gah", but that people were saying "N-eye'-gard", so he changed the spelling so that the pronunciation would sound fairly correct to him.

John

Re: Origin of Newgard

From what I have always heard, it means "new farm". Scandinavians weren't required to have a last name until approx 1920. A bit hard to receive letters with only the name of "John" so until then, it was common for anyone living on a particular farm to use the farm's name as their "last" name & hence have an "address" also. If they didn't use the name of their "home" they used part of their father's first name and added "son/sen" or dttr (daughter). So if your name was Christoph and your father's name was John, you would be called Christoph Johnson. If your name was Kristine, it would be Kristine Johnsdttr. If you used the farm's name you would have many people around you using that name, but they may not be blood relations. Makes it pretty difficult to find these people!

This is what I have read and heard, but if I'm incorrect about something, please let me know.

Our family came from Denmark and landed in Superior, Wisc. using the name of Nygaard (my great-grandfather's name was Georg & his wife Bertha Sonsdergaard. I was told the pronounciation at that time sounded very much like a racial slur, so many of my family changed it to Newgard. Then there were the relatives that didn't like that either ... and changed their names to Brown! Who knows where they went. Our family ended up in Portland, Oregon, after living in MN. They still live there, but I'm married to a Canadian so I have immigrated here.

Georg and Belinda had one daughter (?) and their sons were Bert, Otto, Dan, Georg and Luther (my grandfather, b-1900). My father's name is Robert Newgard. I wish I knew more of my family's life in Wisc. and MN.

Hello Newgards,

I am curious about the origin of our name. Though I know the origin of "my" last name, perhaps your is different. My gradfather's name was Nygaard, but he changed it to Newgard when he came to Canada from Denmark. John
