Dear Gene,

You were very kind to send this information, but I am not the person who asked about Levi Newland. I hope that you find the one who did, or that they may see it on this site. It would be better if the subject were Levi Newland.

Kathryn Leary

Since you asked about Levi Newland and noted your husband’s g g/f was John Davis Newland, I assume John D Newland, brother of Levi listed in 1880 census is John Davis Newland. John D Newland born Apr 1874 in Missouri is listed 1900 and 1910 census of Davis County, IA with wife Lyda and at least 4 children; John D is listed in 1920 and 1930 Appanoose County with wife Eliza and 2 other children. John D is son of George Anthony and Sarah Unknown Newland. George A is s/o Isaac Anthony and Hannah Hicks Newland. Isaac A is s/o Isaac Newland, abt 1752-1808 + Martha Hawkins, abt 1770-unknown.
Gene Martin
I am looking for information on Levi Noel Newland, born 1907. It appears that he was my grandfather, married to Tennie Maymie George Young. My sister and I came across this information on my mother's birth certificate as we are cleaning her house since she passed away. The birth certificate information does not agree with what our mother always told us. I know Levi and Maymie divorced around 1939. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Paula Hradkowsky

Information about Newlands in Barren Co, KY.

At one time, I did some research in Barren Co, believing my line could be found there. I later discovered that was not the case, but I do have some information some of you might be able to use.

From the General Index to Real Estate Conveyances, Barren Co, dates from 1833 through 1922: Benoni S. (3 of these) Isaac (7 in this name), John (5),Amanda, Joseah H (that's the spelling) Oscar, John Walker, Josiah H. (corrected here), J.H., Melvina, Melvina R., J.H.
Dudley (2) another Isaac, Duelly Ike, Cora Lee, and 2 more Isaac.
I have more information regarding the deposition of John Newland 1743 of Wythe Co., if you are interested. I think these papers prove, without a doubt, the lineage of John from Johann Uland the German immigrant.

The identity of John Newland 1743, Wythe Co. VA.

For some of you who are still confused about the parents of John Newland born 1743 in PA. who later settled in Wythe Co, this may help. You will notice it states that his father was John and his mother, Elizabeth. It also states that he had uncles living in that area by the name of Linder. So, this seems to point to the fact that his mother was, indeed, Elizabeth Linder. Elizabeth, the daughter of Simon Linder, married Johan Uland in Lancaster Co. PA in April of 1739. They were married by Rev. John Casper Stover who was the first pastor of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in that area.
This data also states that John of Wythe County had a sister married to Conrad Boyers...In reality his name was Conrad Byers and his sister's name was Sarah. It also mentions a brother, Isaac who was the fourth child of John (Johan) and Elizabeth Linder Newland. You can find these two named individuals, along with the other childrens, in the Will of John Newland ( Johan, the father.)
Thanks goodness, A nice lady named Susan found this deposition and decided to share it with Newland researchers.
She is NOT a Newland descendant, but thought it might be of interest to those of us who are.
Aren't genealogists the nicest people.
Thank you, Susan! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pursuant to a Commission from the Superior Court in Chancery to be holden by Law at Winchester in the County of Frederick & Commonwealth of Virginia, to us directed, We have this second day of September 1815 proceeded to take the Deposition of John Newland at his own house in the County of Wythe to be offered as evidence in a suit depending in said Court, wherein Jonathan McCarty is plaintiff and Joseph Lewis & others are defendants;
The said John Newland, of Lawful age, being first sworn upon the holy Evangelist Deposeth & saith: That he is one of the Lives specified in a Lease this day laid before us, granted to this Deponents Father, John Newland decd by John Carlisle attorney in fact for George W. Fairfax of a certain tract or parcel of land lying in the County of Loudoun and State of Virginia on Kitoctan Creek adjoining the Lands of Israel Thompson. This deponent further saith, that he well recollects, that his father repeatedly told him, that the Lives of his mother Elizabeth Newland, and of his Brother Isaac Newland, and of the Deponent were inserted in said Lease. This Deponent also states, that to his knowledge his Father John Newland decd. did perform the conditions and covenants stated in the Lease now shewn to him: and finally sold and disposed of the same land to a certain Israel Thompson, whose Lands were adjoining on the Northside. as to the situation of the farm, he remembers that the house stood on the northside of the Creek above mentioned and the meadow extended down the Creek on both sides, and the clear Land was likewise on both sides of said Creek, the Orchard was between the house and the Barn. The most respectable neighbours, which this deponent can now recollect, were John Huff; Mailen Jenney who had a mile on Kitocton, and lived about 4 miles off, and was the mill which done the grinding for this deponents father: one Thomas Pursley lived on the main road about two miles distant, which was leading to the gap of the Short hill. also a certain John Marck, minister of the gospel, was living between the End of the short hill and the Blue ridge. This deponent also says that about the year 1762 or 63 the father of this deponent removed with his family to Berkley County, where this deponent was married, and resided about three miles distant from his father until in the year 1769 when this deponent and family removed to the County of Wythe then called the County of Augusta. When this deponents father removed from Loudoun to Berekley County, he settled himself about one mile from Opecan Creek and about two miles from a place called Swanpond. This deponent had three Uncles living then in that neighbourhood, to wit, Simon Lender, Laurence Lender, and George Lender: a certain Henry Vanmeter was also a near neighbour, and a certain Edward Beason had a merchant mill upon Tuscorora creek near Martinsburg. Captain Thomas Swearingam owned a Sawmill about three miles from where this deponent resided. Thomas Shepperd had a mile near where the town now is built, which is called Sheppertstown and this deponent has a sister living near that town, who was married to a certain Conrad Boyers, who died some years ago.
This Deponent being further interrogated with respect to his age, answered and saith: That he was born on the first day of May in the year 1743 in Lancaster County, Pensilvania (sic). and further this deponent said not. John Newland
Sworn to and subscribed at the time and place aforementioned before us.
John Hanger, j.p.
Saml.
It is nice to receive your gratitude Elizabeth, but the "Thanks" all belong to a woman named Susan who is not even a Newland researcher. Without her caring enough to help us, we would not have this information.
I have thanked her on behalf of all of us.
I imagine you have more information about Sarah than I have, but if you have a question I can answer I will be happy to do so.
I am a descendant of Sarah's brother, Isaac, and I am still trying to find out what happened to his son, John.

Shirley
I am a little confused as well. I do not have a John C. as a decendent of Isaac N.(he had a brother John A.) I think u have him confused with my ancestor who was Christopher (Christie)C. and he had a brother John W. Christie did work the railroad and he is the father of my grandfather Wiliam Jackson. I know I have this correct as I got it from census data. Where did your information come from?

I have been researching my Newland line that is from Pitsburgh, Laurel County, KY. It seems that one of John Newland and Ceila Hoy's children is my ancestor Anderson Christopher (1821-1898). I am not 100% sure about this do you have any information. His decedents worked on the L&N railroad, including my grandfather William Jackson Newland. Thanks.

I am also a descendant of John and Celia Hoy Newland via his youngest son Jacob. I don't show a William Jackson Newland, descendant of Anderson Christopher Newland in my file. He did have at least one son that worked the L & N R R, John C Newland, 1873-1949. John would be a grandson of A C via his son Isaac, 1847-1894. If you have further information, I may be able to connect your William Jackson Newland to this family.
Gene Martin

Margaret Newlan(d) married Abraham Miller 3-1824 in Adams Co. OH and moved to Shelby Co. IL. Abraham Newlan(d) married Sarah McElfresh and moved to Grundy Co. MO. Elizabeth Newlan(d) married Zephaniah Wade and went to Moultrie Co. IL. I am seeking the source of proof that these siblings were the children of Jacob Newland. My family has believed they were children of Joseph Newland born about 1770, who died Sept. 1853 in Moultrie Co. IL and his wife Sophia Brown who was born about 1776 and died Sept. 1846 in Moultrie Co. IL. The other sibs are Mark b3-1811, Joseph b1812 (mar. Sarah Jones and Elizabeth Vaughn), and William b5-1815 (mar. Rachel Funk.)Joseph Newland and Sophia Brown moved from Shenandoah Co. VA to Adams Co. OH and never lived in Kentucky.

Hello Daphne,

I am sorry to say that despite some minor research, i have not been able to find out any more about Stowe Lodge .. it may be a house occupied by one family or by several. The photo album has lots of pictures in it but only two of Dorothy Newland, one is her on her bike on Wimbledon Common, and the other is a close up ( though small photo ) of her with the bike. I have no indication if she is related to the Davidson family. she looks at least 16 years of age in the photos and the album is dated 1908 .
there is also a picture of a dog called Lassie titled Dorothy Newlands dog.
if you would like copies of the photos then email me ( please remove the brackets in my email address for correct email) at oldhistory(@)hotmail.co.uk and i will send you copies.

sorry I cannot be more help.
Hello,

I have in my possession E G DAVIDSON ’s photo album from around 1910 , which contains photos of several people and families, the photos are said to be Stowe Lodge at Wimbledon and a few from Worthing, West Sussex.

one of the photos is titled 'Dorothy Newland Wimbledon Common'

For Stowe Lodge, we have the Davidson family , consisting of Mother & father ( believed to be JAMES & EMILY ) and children ANNE , MAGGIE , WILL, ETHEL.

Also at Stowe we have a PHIL GOLDBY ,

And punting ( no location given ) we have FRANK and NELLIE TAYLOR.

Other people mentioned but no location given are Harold McGeorge , Miss McGeorge ( also listed as Aunt Fanny) Gertie Poland , Little Nurse with Jeremy Sass,

I think Maggie Davidson married a D. N. URE.

The Worthing photos seem to be of The Poland family ..

If anyone is researching / or has connections with the Wimbledon Davidsons then please get in touch.

John & Leah Newland adopted Effie Z. McNutt, McPherson Co. KS 1880

Never knowing what ever happened to Effie Z. McNutt, I just recently received the adoption papers of Effie Z. McNutt, daughter of William Franklin McNutt and Sarah Bridger. John and Leah Newland adopted Effie Z. McNutt 16 Feb 1880 in McPherson Co. KS. Effie was 14 months old. Effie's mother Sarah Elizabeth (Bridger) McNutt was born 1850 VA, died May 1879 in McPherson Co. KS.
Effie (now Newland) married Otis Homer Crow 25 Dec 1900 McPherson Co. KS. I find Otis Crow family in Reno Co. KS, to Otero Co. CO. by 1920 and in Yellowston Co. MT 1930.
Effie d. 3 Aug 1955 and husband Otis Crow d. 3 May 1951. Both died in Los Angeles Co. California.
Effie had two siblings: Leona Margaret "Maggie" McNutt b. Jul 1871 and Edward/Edwin B(yron)? McNutt b. Apr 1876.
Would anyone have further information on the above McNutt family. I would be happy to share what I have found on the Newland and Crow data.
The McNutt's are of my line, William Franklin McNutt being a brother of my g gf Henry McNutt.
Thanks.......... Marysue, now in Aransas Pass, TX

Re: Newlands in KY

The John Newland son of Isaac N and Sarah Mae Crawford Newland is the “John C Newland” I am referring to. I don’t really know what his middle initial is. I see John W in the 1880 census and I see him referred as J C in the Mt Vernon newspaper. In any case this is the John Newland that married (1) Viola Painter and (2) Elizabeth Caven He was also injured in a train wreck near Lebanon Junction in 1900. That wreck killed other three rail road employees from Rockcastle County and is described in the Mt Vernon Signal newspaper of that era. I have Isaac N Newland the son of Anderson C and Mary Ann Oliver Newland, and born in Madison County. Mary Ann may have died shortly after that because I have the second marriage for Anderson C Newland to Elizabeth Jane Rayburn on 9 May 1852 Lincoln County, KY. It appears that Anderson C and Elizabeth Jane lived the rest of their lives in Lincoln County and are buried in a family cemetery on the banks of now Cedar Creek Lake. The lake established in 2002 has covered the farm they once owned.
Gene Martin
My maiden name was Newland and I am having trouble getting my aunts real names. One may have been Dorothy, it is very hard to read it on the 1901 census. Also I think there was a family lived in South Wimbledon by that name. My Father was Albert W.(Monte) Newland born 1907. What and where was Stowe Lodge ? Any help would be greatly welcome.
Daphne Newland Sexton
