Mrs. Gladys C. Newman, 94, of Swaims Church Road, Hamp-tonville, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 29, 1913, in Yadkin County to the late Moses W. and Rosa Alice Swaim Chappell. Mrs. Newman attended Knobbs School and Jonesville Elementary School and graduated from Jonesville High School class of 1930. She then attended Appalachian State Teachers College and in 1931 returned to teach at Knobbs School, which was a two-teacher school in Hamptonville. She continued to teach at Haynes 2-Teacher School from 1932 to 1933, teaching students that were older than her. In 1944, she taught at Forbush Elementary School; and in 1945 at Boonville Elementary School; and during those years attended summer school to upgrade her certificate. She continued teaching in 1946 at West Yadkin Elementary School until her retirement in 1971. Mrs. Newman was a faithful member of Swaims Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for 60 years in ages ranging from children to adult classes. She was the church clerk for 17 years, a Bible School worker and sang in the choir. In 1934, she married Roy Newman, who preceded her in death in 1977. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Grace Payne and Beulah Brown; and a brother, Thurman Chappell. Surviving are her beloved daughter, Della Rose Byrd, and husband Toby of Hamptonville; grandchildren Tyanne (Ron) Tabor of Winston-Salem and Tracy Sloop of Hamptonville; great-grandchildren Stephanie (Jamie) Phillips and Abby Wilmoth (Shawn Nobis), all of Jonesville and Dustin Sloop, Hamptonville; great-great-grandchildren Andrew Jones, Tyra Jones, Jaylon Jones and Bryson Phillips; sister Valena Shore of Boonville; and several nieces, cousins and friends.
Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Swaims Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Byrd and Dr. Mike Haynes officiating. She will be in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, May 26, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Jonesville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to Swaims Baptist Church, Swaims Church Road, Hamptonville, NC 27020.
