Re: John A. Newman, run over by his own wagon and killed near Stillwater, Oklahoma

John Amasa Newman was my grandfathers brother. The accident occurred near Yost Lake which is approximately 6 miles north and 3 east of Stillwater. According to my mother he was working on the railroad line for which the lake was built, to provide water for the steam locamotives, when the accident occurred.

His father was Nicholas Newman, born in Prussia in 1828, died in 1906 in IA and is buried in Oskaloosa. The obituary for Nicholas indicates that he was survived by his widow, a son George, two daughters, Mary and Josephine, and two brothers John and George.

Newman DNA Project - Holiday Sale

Family Tree DNA announced a Holiday Sale going on now till December 31st. So if you have thought about joining the Newman DNA Project in the past, or have a distant or potential cousin you would like to sponsor or recruit this might be a good time with the currently reduced prices. This is a y-chromosome test to determine relatedness of different Newman families, so we are looking for males with the Newman surname, women can recruit a male relative with the Newman surname to test. Since the y-chromosome is passed virtually unchanged only one male per immediate family would need to be tested. The y-dna37 test is currently marked down to $119 (reg. price $149) or if you want the full y-dna67 test, it is marked down to $209 (reg. price $239).

To order and join the Newman DNA Project:
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=newman

Matt Newman
volunteer co-administrator
Newman DNA Project
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/newman

Hello

I am trying to trace the movements of Alice Wilkins b1860 who was the sister of (I believe) one of your ancestors called Caroline Wilkins who married William Thomas Lewis. Alice married Robert James Ward but I am unable to find either of them anywhere after 1881. Do you perhaps any information on this branch of the family by any chance please? Rumour has it Alice "disappeared" and Robert worked away a lot (he was a marble mason). Their children ended up in Hackney Union school in the late 1800's.

Regards

Carol

To everyone researching the Newman surname

I am one of the volunteer administrators of the Newman DNA Project and would like to make everyone aware who are researching the Newman surname of our project, we are actively seeking new members. DNA testing is a very useful and powerful tool when used in combination with traditional genealogy. With Y-DNA testing the project has been very successful at sorting out individuals into lineages, this is done by genetically comparing a male's Y-chromosome to others of the same surname to see if they match and confirming a shared ancestry. Our Newman project has over 90 members from 6 countries. By taking part you could potentially find Newman cousins in other countries, confirm you belong to a certain lineage or take your family history beyond where your paper trail ends. A couple large lineages have so far been established and with each new member's results we learn more about the varied and exciting histories of the worldwide Newman families. It is our hope that all Newman lines will participate, not only for themselves but knowing they are helping future Newman researchers as well. Our project's results can be seen at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/newman/results and you can click the tabs at the top of that page to learn more about the project and hopefully decide to join us. Family Tree DNA does our testing but you receive a discount if you order through our project. Since only males have Y-chromosomes only males with the Newman surname can take the test. Women will have to recruit a brother, father, or other male relative with the Newman surname to participate for them. If interested in participating we recommend you purchase at least the Y-DNA 37 marker test, though the more markers you test the better (we don't recommend the Y-DNA 12 marker test as it isn't enough to definitively tell if you are related to someone else). The DNA test consists of a simple painless cheek swab. If you have any questions at all feel free to contact me.

Matt Newman
Volunteer administrator
Newman DNA Project

STILL SEARCHING FOR NEWMAN'S FROM OSCODA MI, AND FROM ALABAMA

Hi, my name is Shea. My maiden name was Newman. Dorothy was my mother and my father's name was Clarence E Newman (everyone called him Cliff). I only remember 2 of my uncles ... Joe and Virgil (I was told it was a large family). They grew up in Alabama. My uncle Joe's wife's name is Inez and they had 3 children (Donna, Linda and Chucky, and my uncle Virgil's wife's name was Ouida and they had 2 children (Susan and Jeannie). We lived in various places in the Detroit area in the 50's (Mt Clemens was one). We moved to Oscoda (that's Iosco County) in the early 60's. I had contact with a couple of family members in the 80's but I've since lost contact. I haven't been able to find anything on my father's side of the family except that both of these uncles have passed away and so has my Aunt Ouida. I'm trying to find more information on the rest of the Newman family (grandparents, etc) so I can continue with my search. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and Have a Blessed Day.
