Hi. I have been working on the Newnam family in Talbot Co., MD for many years now and would like to correspond. My line goes back to a John Newnham/Newnam born in 1646 and who appeared in Talbot Co. in 1660. There were apparently 3 different John Newnham/Newnam who were around at the same time as one was lost at sea, another owned a tavern, and my John died in 1720.

The 1767 Inventory of John Nunham, Caroline County Register of Wills(Inventories) volume CC #A, pp.282-283, records Elizabeth Nunham and Hannah Nunham as next of kin.It does not say if they are daughters or if one is wife, etc. His total inventory was 6 pounds, 0 0. He is probably descended from one of the many Newnam's of Talbot and Queen Anne's County, descendants of the John and Jane Newnam first recorded in a 1665 Land Conveyance of 200 acres called Newnam's Lott at Head of Wye to John Newell.

Re: Newnum Genealogy

I've worked on this name for 30 years now. My best guess is that the original name was Newnham which came from 12 Saxon villages of that name in England. As the h is silent, the name became Newnam and as spelling was inconsistent in those days, it morphed into many variations. If you look at the Soundex Census records you'll see that the consonants are steady while the vowels are what gets changed so the Nwnm part seems to be constant. Also, census takers and military clerks all seemed to want to change to name to the more common Newman. One researcher I corresponded with thought that Newnom was French and meant "new name".

DNA testing will not give you an instant genealogy, but it is an extremely valuable tool. It can eliminate a lot of time wasted researching the wrong family .

I have been involved with the Wells Family Research Association, one of the oldest Genealogical DNA projects. Armed with the DNA results, land, probate, Bible records, etc., we have traced my particular Wells family interest to Kent Co., DE in the 1600s.

Testing for a Newnan may be done through the Wells project at a considerable discount. The participant must be a male bearing the name of Newnan or one of the variants. If you are interested contact me for details as to cost, etc.

Sonja Bedwell
smbedwell@aol.com

Looking for information on the family of Charles William Newnam, born in Missouri 1837, both parents from MD. I believe he is the son of Lorenzo D. Newnam <1810> and Perlina G. <1820>. 1860 Census shows the family living in MO. In addition to Charles (Lorenzo and Perlina) had two sons: Francis and George and a daughter by the name of Mary. Does anyone have any information regarding Lorenzo D. Newnam / Perlina G.? Charles was married to Frances Isabella Farr. They had 6 sons: William, Joseph, Charles, Frank, Robert and George. They had a daughter Jennie, born in IL, but disappears after the 1870 Census. Frances is the daughter of William H. Farr and Vellette Louisa Forsythe. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello,

My name is Joe Newnum and I am interested in learning more about the Newnum's. I have been doing some research and this is what I have found out. It is not much, but maybe it will help. I suspect my grandfather and great grandfather came from Indiana.

My grandfather's name is William Henry Newnum. He died and was buried in Brinkley Arkansas in 1918. He was born in 1858.
My great grandfather's name is William Newnum. He died and was buried in Brinkley Arkansas in 1873. William was a Mason. I found his Masonic head stone last summer. He was born in 1817 I believe.

My father was William Thomas Newnum. He was born in Missouri in 1902. My grandparents moved to Arkansas shortly after my father's birth.

If you can help with anything I would appreciate it. I will find the rest of the information I have if you think it will help you.

Thanks,
Joe

Dear Mr. Lynch,

My husband and I are the owners of Locust Grove in Trappe, Maryland. On our property (which was built in 1783)is buried John Newnam (b.1802 d.1858), his wife Elizabeth Bowdle and his daughter Evelina Newnam Mullikin and her husband's family. John bought this property in 1832 from Edward B. Stevens, whose father built the house and was a nephew of Govenor Stevens. I have researched this family extensively and have come to many dead ends. I do not know who John's parents were but I have reason to believe that he came from Queen Anne's County as the others did. He married into a rather prominent family here--the Bowdle's-- and had business dealings with his brother-in-law, Benjamin Bowdle.
If this line is of interest to you, let me know. If you can answer any of my mysteries, I would be ever so grateful.

Thank you, Jean Greenlee

Dear Mr. Walter,
Thank you for responding to my plea for help. I, too, have been in those tax records as our house is listed in there. I think that I was so estatic to find that information that I failed to look further. I think that you may have identified "my" John's father--I just don't know which one. I am specifically looking for a John Newnam who was married to an Elizabeth and had a child Nicholas Albert in 1812. Nicholas is buried here and I have no idea who he belongs to--I would think he is John's little brother. I am also wondering why he was buried here in 1816 when John didn't purchase the house until the 1830's.
I have looked for connections to the Stevens family to no avail. I do think that John may have had a brother James who married a Mullican from Patrick's Plains--right across Island Creek from this house.
If you should come across any further information, I would be pleased if you would share it with me.

Thanks again, Jean Greenlee
P.S. Are you from Talbot County ?

Thank you so much for your response. In 1830, "my" John Newnam(1802-1858) married Elizabeth Bowdle(1810-1844)who descended from Govenor Samuel Stevens and produced 6 children. I am looking for his parents as well as another John Newnam who was married to an Elizabeth who produced Nicholas Albert (1812-1816)-I suspect this child is John's brother but I can't prove it. I have much information on J and E's children and their spouses but am stuck on their grandparents. Any help is appreciated. Jean Greenlee

Hello Marsha,

My property, Locust Grove located in Trappe, Talbot County, Maryland and built in 1783, was the home of John Newnam 1802-1858 who is buried here along with his wife, Elizabeth Bowdle Newnam 1810-1844 and their daughter Evelina and her husband Capt. Charles Mullikin and various other relatives. John bought the house from Edward Stevens in 1831 as Edward was in financial trouble. The property consisted of about 250 acres then and John was a prominent member of this community.

My problem is I don't know who John's parents were. I think he is related to James who might have been a significantly older brother as he was married to Alice Mullikin (daughter of Patrick, a major land owner across the creek from us) in 1811in QA county or even a father on his second marriage. I am quite convinced that they all hail from QA County.

I also have a child, Nicholas Albert Newnam, 1812-1816, buried here whose headstone says he is the son of John and Elizabeth Newnam. Is this my John's brother ? Why is he buried here when John didn't live here until 1831 ? I can find no record of a John and Elizabeth Newnam in any nearby county that would correspond to Nicholas' dates.

If you or anyone else can shed some light on this I would be most appreciative.

Thank you, Jean Greenlee

Hi Jack,

You are welcome to come and photograph the stones. I have not found out anything more about Nicholas but I am actively searching. I, too, thought of your connection but nothing seemed to jive with dates.

I have found that Elizabeth Bowdle Newnam, John's wife, was first cousin to Elizabeth Jenkins Newnam, wife of James (Jas) M. Newnam. Their mothers, Julia (m. Carson Bowdle) and Phoebe (m. Thomas Jenkins) were sisters. Their parents were Ruth Mullikin b. 1760, married Henry Bowdle 1790, and died May 31, 1822-- daughter of Samuel Mullikin and Henry Bowdle.

Coincidentally, Elizabeth had a brother that died young named Nicholas. I have looked at the stone and it does say that he was the son of John and Elizabeth. How frustrating.

I also have some notes from St. Lukes Parish in Queen Anne's county: 9/16/1756 John Newnam married Eliza Forakers; 12/21/1758 John Newnam, Jr married Elinor Seward; 4/19/1809 William Eugene Newnam was baptized.

Keep me posted if you come across any other tidbits.

Thanks, Jean Greenlee

Thanks to the excellent research of Parker Todd, it seems that Nicholas was born in 1842, not 1812. Yikes !

Let me know if you are still interested.

Jean Greenlee
