John Newsom,newsham, Nusum

This is the information I have. I want so much to find out who his parents are. I have been searching for 15 years. Any help will be appreciated.

)John Newsom (Nusum) was born of English parents. John was born in 1721 and had been apprenticed at the age of fourteen to a blacksmith and worked until he came of age. At that time he had saved enough money to set up business for himself. He married Margaret Reason and emigrated to Virginia, landing in James River Bay in 1756 and located in Northcumberland County Virginia.

Those names don't soumd familiar to mee at all. But that doesn't mean anything. I am young and don't know nicknames or anything that people had. I am only 42 and I got started on this when my grandmother was able to give me information. Now she is bed ridded and I just have to do alot of research.
I used to spend alot of time in the summers in Pinola Mississippi. I would go there with my grandmother to visit relatives and then my grandmothers brother moved there to care for an elderly aunt of theirs. Her name was Neicy Newsome Taylor. She died when she was 105. She died in 1985.
She was the last child living of Dave Newsom and Annie Powell Newsom.

I think that some of them were from Sunflower Mississippi. I had a great great Uncle named Dave Newsome he moved to chicago at one time and then to Inkster Michigan. He was the youngest brother of my GG Grandfather Joe Newsom "Poss" . they had siblings named John, Charlie Martha, Pallie, Pinie, Necie.. Their parents were Dave Newsom and Annie Powell.

I think that Charlie Newsom lived in Sunflower as well. I know that he was living with his cousin at one time in Inverness Mississippi, her name was Flavie Powell. Flavie was married to her cousin John Powell. The called him Monk.

The newsomes and Powells were also related.. As I stated earlier Dave Newsom my GGG Grandfather married Annie Powell.

Annie Powell Newsom was also a midwife back in the day. She also taught my grandmothers cousin Cora Mae Powell how to midwife.
My Grandmother is still living in Illinois her name is Beatrice (Newsome) Williams, She was married to O.C Williams her second husband. Her first husband was S.T. Newsome from Jefferson Davis Miss.

Re: Newsom (Newsome) Tennessee

Jacqueline, I am Pete's oldest daughter. His real name was Eddie Lee Newsome, but most people called him Pete and did not know him by the name of Eddie. Annie Lee Blakemore, who married Pete's father John Collins Newsome, is my paternal grandmother. My grandfather John Collins Newsome went by the nickname of Babe. John's father's name was also John Newsome, and he sometimes went by the name of John Horace. I believe Horace was his surname before he was sold to the Newsomes. John (Horace) Newsome was my great grandfather. My father Pete was his youngest grandchild. Great Grandfather John lived in Indiana with one of his daughters (Mrs. Fannie Patrick) at the time of his death, which was february 23, 1955. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetary in Gary, Indiana. Great grandather was born in North Carolina and my father used to tell us that John Horace also lived for short time in Virginia before he and his mother came to Tennessee. He lived to be more than 100 years of age. He recalled that he and his mother were sold into slavery to a man named Newsome. This happened a few years before the outbreak of the Civil War when John was still a child. The sell separated John from two brothers, one of whom found John (Babe) in Tennessee after the War ended. John never knew what became of his other brother. Great grandfather John Horace always resented the last name Newsome. In fact, several of his descendants members in Gary, Indiana and thereabouts go by the last name of Horace. My father Pete (who remembers his mother Annie Lee's talking about Alex Haley's ancestor Chicken George) used to swear that John Horace came to Tennessee from Virginia with Haley's ancestors. My mother verifies that Annie Lee (Blakemore) Newsome often spoke about Chicken George. I have some information about John Horace's wife (my great grandmother) and other information that I collected from family reunions, my own research, and family lore that I'd be happy to share with you. Unfortunately, John Horace's death certificate lists his father's and mother's names as unknown.

By the way, my father always said that the west Tennessee African American Newsomes were unrelated to the north Mississippi African Americans named Newsome, so this thread is very interesting to me.

Don't know if you'll see this five years later, but you might try looking in the spellings "Newsum" and "Newsome" as well as "Newsom." My grandmother was a Newsum/Newsom/Newsome, and they seem to have used the spellings interchangeably, even within the same family. (I have some pictures online at http://www.flickr.com/photos/39152818@N06/sets/7215761929520... that illustrate this.

My brother was born in that year.

He died of a stroke in 1981 in Chicago. I have 4 brothers and sisters there, James, Josephine, Gwen, another brother name is unknown. My dad's name is George Newsom, Jr. born in 1912 or 1913 or something from Mississippi.

However, I met them in 1981 at his funeral and I haven't seen or hear from them since.

There were a grave yard scam in Chicago, I hope my dad wasn't burried there; but I don't know.

My family from Sunflower, Mississippi, my dad George, Jr, his older brother Andrew, and I only met one aunt that I can remember, Hattie Newsom. My dad and my aunt lived in Chicago, Illinois, they both passed away, and "Uncle New" who was semi-famous in my town in Akron, Ohio, died here in 1978. My dad lived here then, when my uncle passed away he moved back to Illinois. I have 4 brothers and sisters there. (James, another brother, Josephine, & Gwen) I haven't seen them since my dad's funeral in 1981.

Newsom, McNelly in Kentucky in 1800's

Looking for information on Adelia (Adella, Adelah) Eveline Newsome, b. 8 Jan 1837 in KY. Her mother was Martha Morris 1801-1868 and her father was William Hosea Newsom 1798-1843. She is found in KY 1850 Census at 13 yrs. in 13 District 2, Caldwell Co, KY. Also in 1860 as Eveline McNelly with son, Henry Franklin McNelly (my ggf), at 23 yrs in Pollard Tan Yards, Caldwell Co., KY. They are living with her mother and siblings. I find an Adelah McNelly who married a H.L. Dunning 20 Sept 1860 in Caldwell Ky.

My ggf never saw his father, Stephen McNelly (also born in KY according to Henry Franklin's census information) after he left his wife after his son was born for some reason. He ended up in Texas as did Henry Franklin after he was married to Sarah Elizabeth McAnear in KY. I can find no information on Stephen McNelly other than he lived in Iraan, TX late in his life. Also, I can find no other on Adelia. Please, if you have any information on any of the named, please post or contact me at stj_search@att.net.

My connection with the Newsom's was basically that Mary Louisa Blain married William Hugh Newsom. They were from the Caldwell Co, KY area. William's parents were William Hosea Newsom and Mary Irene Keneday also from KY. William Hosea's parents were Hosea Newsom (b. 1798 Surry Co, VA)and Martha Morris (b. 1801 KY). Mary Louisa Blain's father was Alexander Blain (b. 1808 TN). My research has been mainly with Mary Louisa's mother - Martha Moore (b. 1832 KY). When I posted info a few year's back, I referred to this census record...

Re: Newsom of Stokes County, NC

I was just browsing the site and saw these postings. This surname does have many spelling variations. My grandfather's line goes back to William Newsom, who came to Surry County, VA, from England in 1636-16379(?). Through the years they have changed back and forth, to and from Newsom and Newsome. My grandfather used the "e" at the end and his father and at least one brother did not. We don't know why they did this but it sure makes research interesting.
