Re: looking for Joyce Elizabeth Newsome Meyers

Hello,
I, too, am a descendant of Robert Chester Newsome and I am searching for any and all information about him and his family. You see, my story is a bit complicated. My father was born Robert Chester Newsome (II)on November 17, 1935. His mother was Edith Cleonia Hoech and she was living in Bend, OR at the time. I have no idea if my dad's birth father and his mother were ever married. I can not find any records of that. All I know is that my grandmother eventually married a Leonard "Jack" Widener in Portland, OR when my dad was about 10 or 11 years old. Widener adopted my father and that is the only surname I have ever known until one day I came upon an old report card of my father's that had his full birth name on it: "Newsome".
Information is sketchy, from what I understand, Leonard forced my grandmother to destroy any and all records and evidence of Robert Chester Newsome (though I think one photo of him still survives, and I have that) and I never heard her speak of him, she died when I was 13, and I understand that my father never knew his birth father. My mother was an adopted child, so the only geneological information I have ever been able to trace is on my paternal grandmother's side. My father passed away 3 years ago last Christmas. I don't have a big family, it's really quite small, so any information you can share about Robert Chester Newsome would be really appreciated.
Thank you.

I am researching Thomas E Newsom from Texas also. He is my gggrandfather, married Ella Mann. He had only one son, Alvin Fredrick Newsom, and several daughters, as well as two step-sons, John and William Mann. Was your grandfather Alvin?

I recently found Elbert Newsom on the 1860 Anderson Co census with a son named Thomas E Newsom. I was hopeing to find evidence that he is my Thomas Newsom's father. I do know that my Newsom line settled in San Saba Co.

The 1870 Navarro Co. census has T E Newsom, age 14, and several of the Newsom children, living with L McKinny. I think the father (Elbert?) must have been lost in the civil war, and the children were sent to live with relatives, or perhaps McKinny's wife is the eldest Newsom daughter?

Do you have any information about any of Elizabeth Gibbs' sisters? According to an 1950's family history I have, one of the sisters may be the mother of my great grandfather, John Edward Graham. I have been unable to verify this and after 5 years of looking I still do not know who his parents were or where they lived. Ashley Gibbs is supposedly his father-in-law.

A few facts about John Edward:
Born June 1840
Served in Union Navy for one year 1864 to 1865
Died of TB in 1884 in Teays Valley.
I'm new to ancestry.com and found your post. Just wanted to touch base as I feel that I am from the Newsome line of which you speak, on my mother's side, her father was Alton Otis Newsome Sr. I'd love to hear from you and contribute whatever I might as to your project. Thank you--Pam Moore

Pam, sure we can keep in touch! By the way, I meant to say "Newsham Hall" in my post above. The h is silent, like in "graham"--hence the Newsom spelling. Are you a Newsom by birth? Do you have a brother or cousin whose last name is Newsom, who might like to participate in the Newsom DNA project? That's the best way to tell for sure if we are related. My earliest PROVEN ancestor is Harrison Newsom who moved to Floyd County, KY in the early 1800s. He is thought to be descended from William Newsom of Surry County, VA. (See http://www.edebby.com/genealogy/newsom3.htm). The DNA project was just started this past year, and it is yielding some interesting results that are still pointing us in that direction. See http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/newsome/ for more information. Incidentally, I am also descended from Moores.

Sorry I meant that first name pronunciation to read as NEW-SHAM and not NEW-SHAMM (although they sound the same)...

In Lancashire the name of NEWSOME or NEWSOM would be pronounced as either NEWSOME or NUZOM. The Yorkshire dialect would corrupt this to sound as NUZUM.

This could explain why official records have names changed by officals from different regional (dialect) backgrounds.

In the UK and Ireland the name of NEWSHAM is pronounced exactly as it is spelt. The "H" is not silent in any area of the country so it still sounds like and is pronounced as NEW-SHAM or NEW-SHUM even NEW-SHOM depending on your local dialect.

Hi Kevin,

The ideal layout for any research query is:

Name: (A specific individual)
Location: (include the Country)
Dates: (If known)

Spouse: (if known)
Children: (if known)

Other information: (brothers and sisters to the main person)

It makes it easy for anyone wanting to help as they then know exactly who, where and when.

Your posting does not indicate whether it's the father or g.father you want information on, or any of the fathers siblings (brothers and sisters).

If you are Stateside, we need to know this!
Most places in the USA are named after other places.

I don't know whether we are cousins, but you may find it useful to know that Newsome is also spelled "Newsum" and "Newsom" and that there were families of this name living in the northern part of Forsyth County, near Germanton, around 1900. Germanton was the old county seat before Forsyth and Stokes were divided, so you may want to look in Stokes County too. (The division happened in 1849.)

My g-grandfather George Wilson Newsome (b. 1851) had a son named Arthur (b. 1881), but the other names don't match.

Good luck!

Newsom(e)(n) in Canada

I too am a Michael Newsom though living in Canada. I decend form Thomas Newsom (b. 1822) and Susan Sayer (b. 1830) Parents were John and Elixabeth (Jex). Both Susan and Thomas indicate on census they were born in England but I have not found any records as to which part. They were living in Canada in 1851 when their first child was born in Ontario. I have a hunch that Thomas may have come to Canada with a brother William as early as 1833. Croft is also a common middle name associated with this family.

greetings, It was so many years since I put my request in that I had given up so nice to hear from you, and we know your father Brian he is my husbands -Bill Newsome's -cousin, and we live in Nelson. Bills father was Bill Newsome son of Thornton and brother of Arthur.
We have visited Alderley Edge and have photos of the house where John and Emily Newsome lived, I also have the 1861, 71,81,91 and 1901 census, also the marriage certificate of John and Emily Newsome. Recently I purchased off E bay a docket that had been sent to Ellis and Newsome Hop Merchants, in Manchester in 1861. I would really like to know if there are any descendants of John Newsome apart from Thornton's family. Ellis Newsome, Thorntons brother had a family one died when he was in his 20's and was still living at home but there was an Ellis and Ethel.
I would be happy to send you copies of anything I have, where do you live we will be in Ch ch in a few weeks time if you are in ch Ch.
Would we have met you at Joyce's 80th birthday?
our email address is bmnewsome@actrix.co.nz
Ph 03 5442008
Regards Mary Newsome

Clapp's Factory, Warren, Georgia, John Newsom family info needed...

Hello Fellow Rootsweb Posters!

At the website, FINDAGRAVE, I found the following information about a family & photograph posted there:

This photo shows descendants of John & Lithy (Pike) Newsom at Clapp's Factory. The occasion was probably either a reunion or a funeral. Seated center is John & Lithy's son James Carter Newsom (1846-1921), and to his right is his wife, Nancy Eliza Jane (Morris) Newsom, whose father Richard Ivey is also interred at Clapp's Factory. The others are James & Jane's children, in-laws, and grandchildren. Photo courtesy of Sue (Mrs Jack) Gilbert.

John Newsom was born 14 AUG 1820 in Warren County, Georgia, the eldest child of James & Elizabeth (Newsom) Newsom, and evdiently died in 1895 or 1896, probably in Phenix City, Lee County, Alabama. John married 15 JUN 1845 in Harris County, Georgia, to Talitha C. "Lithy" Pike (16 MAY 1827 Clarke County, Georgia – aft. 1900). John's burial at Clapp's Factory per family knowledge of descendant, Sue (Mrs. Jack) Gilbert. The location of his grave is not presently known.

Clapps Factory Cemetery
Columbus
Muscogee County
Georgia, USA

Aug. 13, 1820
Warren County
Georgia, USA

I think this John NEWSOM may be the son of James & Elizabeth? NEWSOM - John being the son of Peter (1762) & Rhoda (WHITE) NEWSOM. All of these folks had connections to Warren & Harris County, Georgia.
Though these are distant relatives of my Newsome's (the above Peter NEWSOM is my second cousin), I would really like to know if & how these folks are connected to my NEWSOM line.

Thanks soooooooooo much in advance,

Carl,
in balmy Florida
Florida Newsome Families....where did they come from?

Hello fellow posters!

I am researching Newsome family lines in Florida to see if any of them connect to my lines.
There seems to be a whole lot of Newsom/ Newsome's in North, West and Central Florida and I would like to see how they might be related, even distantly with my Newsome lines. I descend from Isaac and Mary Dortch Newsome through their son John. John had two families in the Putnam County, Georgia area. I have lots of info on the children of his first wife, Martha Alford, but not a whole lot on the second wife, Martha Wards children. These may, or may not be the Newsome families who moved into Florida, but it's a start. I would be interested in Florida Newsom(e) connections even further back that connect eventually to William the Immigrant (b. @1614,Eng., m. Penelope Ramsey.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks sooooooooooooo much in advance.
Just saw your post. I come from a line of Newsoms from Texas. My gggrandfather was Elbert Newsom b. 1811 in Edgefield, SC. He moved to alabama, MS and then settled in Anderson, Tx. His son Thomas E. Newsom was my ggrandfather b. in 1856 in Anderson. He died in San Saba. I have had a dead end finding anyone earlier than Elbert in 1811. Perhaps you know more.

Kevin,
My great grandfather is Andy Lee Newsome from Floyd Co. Kentucky. Not sure if this will help you but somewhere in time his son Robert dropped the "e" from his name, just found that out myself when I started my research. Good luck on your research.
