Newton and Hill TN, GA, IL, AR, TX

I'm a descendant of Edward Newton through son Jesse, whose daughters Nancy and Rebecca married James F. Hill b. 1844 TN. Jesse, wife Abigail and children are on 1860 Census in Catoosa Co. Perhaps James and brother John are living with W.N. Johnson on same census. Jesse with Abigail and James with Nancy found on same 1870 Census sheet in Pulaski Co, IL, James' marriage record to Rebecca 1871 in Washington Co, AR, where my great-grandmother Mary was born 1872. They are in Wise Co, TX on 1880 Census. Would love to hear from Newton or Hill cousins who will help me fill in the gaps on this family: marriages, children, burials, etc.

Rev. Roger Newton of Connecticut Descendants

Descendants of Reverend Roger Newton

I have created a searchable pdf file for use as a reference resource by descendents of Reverend Roger Newton and Mary Hooker Newton of Farmington and Milford, Connecticut. The file is for research by Newtons, not for sale or resale. I will share this information with other Newtons who I can confirm have a connection to Rev. Roger Newton. This is available in searchable pdf from me upon request for those I can determine to be descendents of Roger Newton. If you are interested in receiving this history, send your request and list of early Newton ancestors by e-mail to gorilapsy@gmail.com with dates/places of birth/death to verify your connection to Rev. Roger Newton.

Included in this file:

1. “Search for Reverend Roger Newton: A genealogical quest” which provides my hypothesis on the English origin of Reverend Roger Newton. I am seeking information from other Newton researchers which will answer the questions about where Roger Newton came from in England, and his ancestry. As my own research and that of others provides verification of Roger’s origins, the story of his English origins will be added to my uncle’s work (see below).

2. The Newton Family: The Ancestry and Descendants of David Newton of Milford, Connecticut and Hartford, Vermont (Rev. Roger Newton, CA 1620 – 1683, of Farmington and Milford, Connecticut), compiled by Robert S. Newton, 1984. This detailed history of the Newton family, compiled by my uncle, from Roger Newton down to the present time through David Newton is a valuable resource for Newton’s whose origins trace back to 17th -18th century Connecticut. Although it does not trace all descendants, there is a large body of information on Newtons descended from Roger through this period. Newtons who have “hit a wall” trying to go back further in their family history may find the missing links within this document. It was scanned from the original text into searchable Adobe pdf. Within Adobe Acrobat Reader, searches for specific information may be made using “Edit/Find” and then entering the name or word desired.

3. Many of Roger Newton’s descendants traveled west to New York, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Oregon and other states as part of the westward migration. As part of my research, I plan to add to my uncles’ work by appending the history and descendants of the Newtons not included in my uncle’s text. Over the long term, this project will trace the spread of the descendants of Roger Newton across the United States.

Readers can help with this project. If you have information about the origins of Reverend Roger Newton and/or have made a connection between your Newton family history and my uncle’s text, please share your information with me by e-mail to gorilapsy@gmail.com.

I hope that you have success in your search for your Newton origins and look forward to any successes that you wish to share with others through this project.

Regards,

Jason R. Newton
Generation 11 Descendant of Roger Newton & Mary Hooker Newton
February 11, 2007
N.C. Newton Family data

Sarah Graves (1) was born about 1715. She married Abraham Newton, son of Abraham Newton and Rachel Newton, on 5 Nov. 1735 in Southboro, MA. He was born 25 June 1715 in Marlborough, MA. He was descended from Richard Newton who immigrated to Sudbury, MA from Lincolnshire, England about 1639. Four of their sons (Isaac, Jacob, George, and Samuel) moved to NC in the 1750's and settled Newton Cross Roads in New Hanover Co., NC. In 1769, Abraham served on the jury for a murder trial in Deplin Co., NC. Abraham was living with or near his four sons in 1779 in Duplin Co., NC, where all five signed a petition for the formation of Sampson Co. from Duplin Co. It is thought that Sarah was in NC also. There is an obituary for a Mrs. Sarah Newton in the Cape Fear Mercury, 29 Dec. 1773. It is assumed that this was Sarah Graves Newton and that she died sometime in Dec. 1773. All four of the sons in NC were in the Revolutionary War.
Eli Newton, Chisago County, Minnesota

Still trying to unravel Eli's life.

Eli Newton was born Nov 1859 (1900 Census) and first married Ida C. Hickerson. They had 4 children, the two daughters only surviving: Myra and Frances Angeline ("Frankie"). Ida died in 1894, and the girls were living with Richard Wallac [sic] and his wife Clara as "adopted daughters" by the 1900 Census.

In 1900, Eli reported he had married my g-grandmother, Margaret "Madge" or "Maggie" May Erwin, about 7 years previously. Their oldest son, George Sidney was 11 at this time.

By 1913, Madge and her three children are in Idaho, without Eli. By 1920, Madge was in Oregon, and Eli was living with a family in Minnesota .

Any information would be appreciated.

Mary Newton, dau Betty (Drakefoot) and Thomas Newton

In a newspaper clipping telling of Sarah Newton Reyner's birthday celebration, I read:
" . . . Four of her brothers and her brother-in-law served in the union armies, and her youngest brother, Isaac Newton, was killed at Vicksburg the last day of the fighting, and her brother-in-law died in a hospital, and her sister served in the same hospital and died there."

Who were the four brothers who fought in the Civil War? I know of Edward and Isaac, but not of others.

Second question: What about this sister and brother-in-law? All hints would be helpful. It may have been Kansas City but I have nothing to verify that. I believe her name to have been Mary. Searching for a Mary Newton is akin to trying to find a needle in a haystack without definite locations and a married name. Suggestions?

I have little definite on Mary Newton except
-- NEWTON, Mary Christening Gender: Female
Christening Date: 25 Jul 1841 Recorded in: Denton, Lancashire, England
Collection: St Lawrence Father: Thomas NEWTON Mother: Betty
Source: FHL Film 1550981 Dates: 1836 - 1886
-- She was 3 months old when the 1841 British census was taken
-- She came to the US with her father and family in 1849.
-- 1850 US census, Mary was 10, a student, living with the family in PA

Any help in finding this elusive aunt would be appreciated. Every time I think I find a line, it turns out to be a white family, and the family I am looking for is not white, or Indian, but is definitely African-American Black.

James Millican and Benjamin Newton of Lincoln county NC (1779)

I have wondered for some time whether the Millican family of Anderson county Tennessee was related to the Newtons. Among the known Millican family there was a Newton Millican (b. abt 1810) and a Robert Newton Millican (b. abt 1848).

I have just discovered a Lincoln county marriage bond for a James Millican and Pheby Lewis dated 17 April 1779. The bondsman for that marriage was Benjamin Newton.

I would like very much to know whether this Benjamin Newton was the same Benjamin Newton who was born in York County, PA, who married Nancy McCall in 1775 in Orange County, NC and who lived in what became Cleveland County, NC. (The time and place seem to suggest this.) Were there other Benjamin Newtons who lived in this area in the 1770's?

Does anyone have any idea how James Millican and Benjamin Newton may have been connected? Does anyone have anything else to suggest that any Newton family was related in any way to the Millicans? I would be very grateful for any scrap of information on James Millican and Benjamin Newton. Thanks.

I'm looking for an 1870 census listing for Nathaniel Milburn Newton (b. 1842, Alabama). I'm fairly certain he lived in either Gonzalez or Guadalupe County in Texas at the time of the census. He lived his entire adult life in that part of Texas since emigrating with his family from Alabama in the 1850's. He had just married in 1868 to Ella J. Davidson (b. 1849, MS) and had one child (Susan Melinda b. 1869). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Katherine F. Newton, age 87, born in Jamestown, NY, Daughter of, Herbert and Kath-erine (Orlafska) Field.
Katherine F. Newton

Katherine F. “Grandma” Newton, age 87,
of Chautau-qua Road, Fredonia died Sunday (May 18, 2008) at Lake Shore Hospital after a brief illness.

Katherine was born in Jamestown on June 26, 1920, to the late Herbert and Kath-erine (Orlafska) Field.

Katherine was a hard working and caring woman. After completing high school, she went into the wartime nurses training pro-gram at WCA Hospital in Jamestown. It was while working at this hospital that she met her future husband of over 50 years, Archie “Bud” Newton Jr. of James-town.

She took on many roles throughout her life. She was a nurse; also a grape farmer.
gardener and business wom-an.
She was an artist, painter and sculptor.
She was a lov-ing wife, mother, grand-mother and great grand-mother.
She had an avid love for her animals,
always sur-rounded by numerous pets,
farm animals, and whatever wounded or hungry creature that she came across. She had a love for people, espe-cially children, and was al-ways trying to help out whomever was near her, even when she herself was in need of care. No matter what role she served in, she was always a caretaker, which is how she wanted to be remembered.

Her love of gardening, along with her husband’s, led to the forming of Glen Acres Nursery in 1961.
She was able to share and pass along this love to her chil-dren,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She al-ways instilled the ethics of hard work,
pride and hones-ty in her family.

In addition to her parents,
she was predeceased by her husband, Archie E. “Bud” Newton Jr.
and two sisters, Blanche Howard of James-town
and Carrie Moughmer of California.

She is survived by a sister, Barbara Ross of California;
a son, Douglas Newton of Fre-donia
with her grandchil-dren Richard (Colleen),
Matthew, Holly, Danielle
and Heather;
and her great grandchildren Amy, Emma,
Joseph and Haylie;
a daughter, Patricia (Stephen) Fisher of Syracuse with her grandchildren Nate, Chad and Audrey.

At Katherine’s request, there will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Private burial will be in the Webster Road Cemetery in Pomfret.

In lieu of flowers, the fam-ily requests that donations may be made in Katherine’s name to the Chautauqua County Humane Society in Jamestown.

Arrangements are by the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home, Dunkirk.

I am looking for ANY info on Elias Newton who married Thankful Hazen. I have seen a few other postings online where it says Thankful Hazzard, but the Vital Records to 1850 for West Springfield, MA state Thankful Hazen and that they were married 5 Oct 1797. They are both from Russell, Hampden Co, MA. I believe that Thankful died before 1850 as she is not with her husband who is living with his daughter Emily at that time. They have one known child: Emily Newton b. 15 Dec 1807 and died 1883. She married Frederick W Leonard and they had at least 3 children:Ann Mary, Frances C, and Hiram W. Any futher info is most appreciated! Thanks!

Amasa, son of Abel(John, James, James, Thomas) and Elsie or Alsa (Loomis) Newton, b. 14 Dec 1789

I'm having trouble verifying Amasa's children and dates.

1850 Census, Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York has an Amasa, age 81 living with a Marshall Newton, age 55. I can't seem to locate a Marshall in Amasa's line that would indicate he was living with a relative.

I can find two Amasa's that fit, both birth dates are different. One born in CT in 1769, the other 1789.

My info has Amasa being married twice, Elizabeth Douglas, 1817, and Mary Hutchins, unknown.

I'm trying to confirm his children and sources, so any information would be helpful.

Thanks,
Marc

I am interested in hearing from people related to, or who have information about, James Henry Newton (b. 1809 in GA, d. 1882 in TX). My records indicate he was married to Elvira Reynolds (b. 1815 in MS, d. 1857 in TX). They are both buried in the Concrete Cemetery in Guadalupe Co. Texas. Here is a list of their children:

Elizabeth Jane;
Fereby Melissa;
James Earvin;
Darius Cudar;
Nathaniel Milburn (my descendent);
Lemuel Frank;
William Bryant;
Thomas Calvin;
Joel (or Joseph) Wooten.

James later married Mary McLemore (b. 1832 in TN, d. 1917 in TX). I don't have any records for her.

Any records would be appreciated. I've seen many census and burial records on Ancestry, but not for everyone.

I'd be willing to share any info I have with those interested.

Thanks in advance!

Larry Newton

Need Help with West Texas Newtons

If anyone out there can help me with the following I would be over the moon.
I have been able to go back to my Great Grandfather Bertie Milton Newton, Know to Family as (Pa). I know that he was the oldest of several siblings and was born in 1904 according to 1930 census, but my mother seems to think that he was born around 1900 or 1901. I have a few names of brothers & one sister, they are Troy Monroe Newton, Lester Newton, Emsy(Emsey?Emsie?)Newton, & Virginia Mae Newton. In the 1930 census Pa lists that his father was born in Tennessee and his mother was born in Texas. I am trying to find his father but am having a hard time as I do not have much to go on I do know that Milton is a family name passed on from his father, which my mother thinks was also called Emsey(?) but I am thinking that Emsey is actually the initials of his first and middle names (E.M.) and that the "M" is probably for Milton. From what my mother knows, Milton was given to her Great Grandfather by his father. I have no real ideal what the "E" could stand for but I have looked for Elmer, Edward, Ernest and several others. My Great grandparents lived outside of Big Spring Texas in Howard county for many years and both died there, but I have not been able to find either one's obit for more information. My Pa passed 11/23/1984 and my Ma passed 08/09/1989. I attended her funeral, but have moved several times and have lost the funeral program. All three of their sons are gone now too so I really do not have anyone to ask on that sit of the family other than my mother and her cousins and so far I am not getting a lot of information there. Like I said above if anyone could help me out with this I would be very grateful, Thank you in advance for any information.

Mary Ann Newton
MRS. MARY ANN NEWTON, widow of the late William Carroll Newton, is one of the old pioneer settlers of Cherokee County,Kansas coming here in 1866, and she has resided on her farm of 160 acres in section 8, township 34, range 23, in Lyon township, for almost 40 years. Mrs. Newton was born in North Carolina, December 14, 1830, and is a daughter of James and Mary (Foster) Carroll.

The father of Mrs. Newton was born in Virginia and died in Tennessee, and her mother was born in North Carolina, and died in Arkansas. They lived many years in Tennessee. Mrs. Newton had four brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Newton was a babe in arms when her parents moved to Tennessee and located some five miles distant from Paris, and there she grew to fair young womanhood, and in 1851 married William Carroll Newton. Mr. Newton was born near Paris, Tennessee, February 11, 1828, and died in Lyon township Cherokee County, Kansas, March 13, 1894. Soon after their marriage the young couple drove overland to Marion County, Arkansas, and engaged in farming there until the outbreak of the Civil War, when they again fitted up their conveyances and made a second overland journey in search of a new home. After a short time spent in Illinois, they continued on their way until they reached a point in Kansas, opposite St. Joseph, Missouri, where they spent the winter of 1865 and in the spring of 1866 entered Cherokee County. Mr. Newton took up a claim of 160 acres in section 8, township 34, range 23, in Lyon township. The first summer in Kansas was spent in a tent, but by the time cold weather came on a cosy[sic] shanty of logs, 16 by 18 in dimensions, was ready for occupancy.

Those were busy days for all members of the pioneer family. The father managed to break his land the first summer, but this was only a small part of his work. The family was kept supplied with food as turkeys and prairie chickens were very plentiful and an occasional deer could be killed but in order to get other supplies a week or 10 days was the shortest time that could be made in the round-trip journey between his home and Carthage and Springfield, Missouri. He went as far as Fort Scott to get his meal ground and Kansas City was the nearest railroad center. When Mrs. Newton receives the government official at her door with her mail she can not help recalling the days when a long trip to Baxter Springs had to be made, through almost a wilderness, to get the letters and papers. Mr. Newton was a good farmer and a very industrious man, and Mrs. Newton materially assisted by her cheerful bearing of hardships and contriving to make the family comfortable by those little expedients a tender mother alone knows.

The 10 children born to this marriage were: Seely Elizabeth (Mrs. Thornton), of Nevada, Missouri, who has five children; James Jasper, who died aged 21 years; Mrs. Maria Narcissa Dennis, of Cherokee County, who has two children; Mrs. Parelee Turner, who has three children and resides on the homestead with her mother; Miranda Clementine (Mrs. C. E. Marlette), of this county; Solomon D., of this county, who has five children; Frances (Mrs. Willie Frank), of Cherokee County, who has five children: William, of Cherokee County, who has two children; Lulu, a successful teacher for the past 12 years, who lives at home; and Mrs. Orpha McEwen, of Cherokee County.

Mrs. Newton has a happy, united family, the greater number of whom are settled near in homes of their own. She has 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and they find much entertainment in the stories she can tell of the early days when Indians were her most frequent, if unwelcome, visitors.

Mr. Newton was a Democrat politically and fraternally was a Mason. He was a member of the Baptist Church and an honest, upright man, a devoted husband and a loving father.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

History of Cherokee County Kansas and its representative citizens, ed. & comp. by Nathaniel Thompson Allison, 1904, transcribed by Carolyn Ward, instructor from USD 508, Baxter Springs Middle School, Baxter Springs, Kansas, 3/11/97.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My grandfather was born in 1920 or 1921 in either Massachusetts or New York. His father's name was Charles Paul Newton Sr - and he worked as a manager at the Hotel Somerset in Boston, MA. I believe my grandfather served in the British Civilian Technical Corps (CTC) in England from 1941 to the end of 1944). He served as a radio technician during WWII. I believe that Charles Paul Newton Sr had a sister, but her name is not known, and that she may have lived in Florida at some point in her life. I also believe that Charles Paul Newton Sr was divorced at some point. I do not know anything further on the Newton side of my family. I also believe that he may have come back to the United States on the Mauretania(2) leaving the Port of Liverpool, England on Dec 31, 1944, and arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Jan 6th, 1945. I believe that he may have been heading for Reno, Nevada.

I have a political campaign card that I would like to pass along to a J. Ambler Newton descendant. This card is a little larger than a business card with a picture of Mr. Newton on the front. This card says that he is running for Superior Court Judge in Departmet #8, replacing the position held by Judge Hall. The back of the card says that Newton was born in Virginia in 1881. He is married, has two children and has been a Seattle resident for 25 years and an attorney in Seattle for 14 years. Please post a reply to this message board if you are interested in having the card.

Looking for Robert Newton of Allegany Co, NY b. 1777 in MA

I am looking for ANY info on a Robert Newton who lived in Allegany Co, but appears to have been born in MA in 1777-1778. The first I can find him is in 1820 in Nunda, Allegany Co, NY also listed there is Lyman H Newton. (Would also like more info on him as I can't seem to figure out where he went!) In 1830 I find Robert Newton in Grove, Allegany Co, NY and also listed there is "Klah" Newton which is obviously a spelling error- when looking at it, I thought it might look like Silas or Lyman. In 1840, I can't find Robert Newton at all in NY. In 1850 I find Robert Newton living with the family of Willard Blake age 46, Rachel his wife age 36,Edmund Blake 4, then Robert Newton 72, Henry Newton 15, Rufus Newton 11. Listed also on the same page is a William Newton age 38 and his wife Esther Newton age 30. In 1860 I find a Robert N Newton listed in the poor house in Angelica, Allegany co, NY age 83, so I am guessing this is him. (I found Rachel Blake age 56 living with her son Edmond age 24 at this time and she appears to be widowed). Obviously I feel that all of these Newtons are related somehow. I wonder if Henry or Rufus are the sons of Robert, but they are so young, I wonder if they are the sons of Rachel from a previous marriage. ANY help putting together these families would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

PS I checked the available vital records to 1850 for the state of MA and could not find Robert Newton b. abt 1777.
Roger/Richard/Sir Isaac

I'm new to researching my Newton line, and just recently traced my ancestry to Rev Roger Newton b1607. I see postings that Roger allegedly had some close relationship to Sir Isaac, but that Roger's paternity is unknown, except for what seems an uncertain reference to a father Samuel.
I note that Richard Newton b1590, apparently a known uncle of Sir Isaac, arrived in MA in 1638, and that Rev. Roger also apparently arrived in MA in 1638. Is there any reason to think they may have travelled together - or evidence that they did not? Is there evidence that rules out Roger being son of Richard - other than that Richard would have had to have been pretty young when Roger was born? Is the family of Robert Newton, Richard's father, sufficiently well known to rule out Samuel as a brother of Richard who travelled around the same time to America? Or, since Samuel's date of death is apparently not know, that Roger may have been a nephew of Richard brought with him to America? Sorry, I know so little about what little is known that I don't know what speculation can be discarded. Any comments/assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Giles, James, Younger

I received this e-mail today. I have not had time to check my relationship to Giles Newton. If anyone else knows our relationship please get back to me ASAP and I will forward the documents. Feb. 1 is only a couple of weeks away. I will also be posting this on the online NEWTON Genealogy board.

Regards,

Neal

-----------------------------------------------------------

Some of you are cousins who spent summer weeks at our old homeplace and farm. How much did that time with Uncle Jack and Aunt Ethell mean to you?

Most all of you are direct descendents of Giles Newton and his two sons, James and Younger. How much do you value your family’s heritage?

The state department of transportation has informed us that they have moved the route of future Interstate 73 so that it bisects our historic family farm and runs within 60 feet of our historic home. We have been in discussions with them, and they are considering alternate routes, but most of the routes they are considering will still bisect the farm and will only move the road from 200 feet to a quarter of a mile from the house. However, there is one route that would be about ½ mile west of the house and would only slightly impact the farm. The decision makers have told me that hearing from a couple of us is not enough. They need to hear that it is a significant concern to many.

Here’s a way to show Uncle Jack how much he has meant to you. Here’s a way to fight for your heritage, because most all of you originated from this extended farm. Please print out the attached petition, have each member of your family – even your children – sign it. Ask every co-worker, neighbor, church member, and acquaintance to sign it. Fill up as many pages as you can within the next two weeks. On Friday, Feb 1, mail all the pages you have – please don’t add a cover sheet or any comments - to:

NOTE: THIS IS A CHANGED ADDRESS

South Carolina Department of Transportation

Attention: Mitchell Metts

P.O. Box 191

Columbia, SC 29202-0191

Please take this matter seriously. We are so close to affecting this change, and the pages you send may be the ones to sway the decision. We are not opposing I-73 or trying to push it on our neighbors. This other route will not cause any destruction to any home, and the only one it comes close to is one that it will already come close to, regardless which route is chosen. So, help us….. but do it NOW!!!

[If there is a member of the family for whom you have a current email address and you don’t see them in those to whom I sent this request, please “Forward” it to them. “Forward” so that the attachments will accompany the transmission.]

Regards,

Don

Newtons of Allegany Co, NY

Need some help!
There are a few Newton families in Allegany Co, NY and I am trying to figure out which one might be related to my Thankful Newton b. abt 1806 and died 1861. She was married to Erastus Richardson abt 1830 and they lived in Cuba Twp, Allegany Co, NY. They had two children- Emily and Helen.
Now there are a few Newtons in Allegany Co.
There is Hollis B Newton b. abt 1800 and supposedly from Madison Co, NY possibly son of Edmund Newton. There is also Clark Earle Newton b. 25 Jan 1793 also from Madison Co, NY and brother of Hollis. I was thinking that perhaps these are Thankful's brothers, since they are in Allegany Co in the towns near to where the Richardson family is living, but I have yet to find any proof.
There is also a Robert Newton living in Allegany Co, in 1830 in Grove Twp and 1820 in Nunda Twp and he has a daughter of the right age to possibly be Thankful, but I can't find any further record of him after 1830 in Grove.

I would appreciate any furter info on the Newton families of this area. thanks so much!
I am looking for information about my geat grandfather and his family.

Elbert Newton was b. 1/29/1913, d. 4/25/1981
He married Ida Ruthine Borden b. 12/4/1921, d. 6/6/2001

Elbert's dad is Willie Newton b. 8/3/1890, d. 2/1/1966
Elbert's mom is Lula May Hack 1/7/1888, d. 10/13/1944

Together, Willie and Lula May had the following children:
Ernest, Everett, Emmett, Elbert, Ezra, Elroy

I have information on Lula May Hack's side, going back several generations. The Newton side however is a little more confusing.

Family has no clue who Willie Newton's parents were. Some say Billy Cook and Rachel Newton (never married, pregnant out of wedlock). Others claim James Newton and Elzia Jane Wilson.

Can anyone clarify or know anything about this side of my family?
