I'm looking for information on my Great Grandmother's family. Iva was born May 12th 1900 in Barnsville, MN.
I know that her Mother was Rosella Kellum Newville.
Story has it that Rosella was in a bad marriage and left with Iva. As I said this is a family story I have no proof.
Rosella later married a James William Doherty and he adopted Iva and Iva went by the last name of Doherty until her marriage. Iva lived most of her life in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Rosella was born in I believe Kossuth County, Iowa. Her Father was Daniel Kellum.
Any help would be appreciated.

The information I have was taken from a letter from Jack R Newville to Francis S. Newville, written April 15, 1963. The letter was given to me because of my interest in geneology along with a 25-page typewritten family tree. I honestly don't know if any of it is accurate, but it is extremely thorough! The farthest it goes back is the information I gave you - John Newville abt. 1755. Of the 25 or so descendants detailed, none of them appears to have moved back to Canada.

Is ther any record of John in Canada? or When he might have immigrated there? I do know that there were later generations of Newvilles who immigrated to Canada c.1900. Is there anything to substantiate this assumption?

Here's what I have in my notes

The 1790 Census of Halfmoon, Saratoga Co., NY lists John Novel. THe family consists of one male over 16, two under 16 and five females. The 1800 census of the same place lists John Novell with four sons and four daughters.

It is assumed that John is the first Newville in the US and that he was a French-Canadian farmer from around Quebec where there are records of Newville families, who migrated south along hte Hudson River into New York following hte revolutionary war. Sons were:

John Jr. b. 1778 NY
Abraham b. 1788 Saratoga Co, NY
James b. 1782
Peter b. abt 1795
Jeremiah b. abt 1800

It was compiled by a Marlene Newville (from Wisconsin, I think) and given to me by my mom. I don't know if it's accurate, but there are sources listed and it's very comprehensive (10 pages).

Liz

P.S. Still trying to figure out if we're cousins. The mystery has deepened for me, because my great-great grandfather (Charles Edgar Battern Newville) was the *adopted* son of Charles Edwin Newville. His mother, Kate Jane Blow, was listed as a divorced woman in the 1880 census, from a marriage to James Battern in 1877. I can't help but notice the similarity in names between step-dad and step-son... Was it coincidence? Or hanky-panky on the prairie?

I can give you information on Newvilles that are perhaps cousins in some way... John Wesley Newville was born 2 June 1835 in Edinburg, NY. He married Mary Jane Shepard 2 July 1861 at West Union, Steuben Co., NY. In 1869 they settled in Cresco Twp, Kossuth Co. Iowa, where John died 15 Nov. 1922. Mary Jane died 16 July 1934 at the age of 94. Their youngest son, Floyd, and his wife Grace, live(d)? in Algona, Iowa where Floyd at 83 (1962) is still a Deputy Marshal. Children were:

Emily Lovine
Fred Henry (m. Laura C. Smith)
Flora Roxana
William Edson (m. Maud M. Dalley)
John Charles (m. Lucy Haswell)
Floyd Amosa (m. Grace Anderson)

It seems a large coincidence to have two Newville families in the same county who are unrelated! Hope this helps.

I have in history that was researched and passed on to me John A. Newville. b. 8/22/1840 Penfield, NY married Patience A. Deming b.10/17/1844 daughter of Soloman and Nancy Newville Deming. Patience died 1926 and John 1934. Both are buried in Maple Lawn Cemetary, Boyne City, MI. They had 6 children, Maybelle b. 1871, Benice b. 1873, Frederick b. 1878, Grace b. 1879, Flora b. ??, John R. b.??. According to my records Maybelle, Grace and John R. were still in Boyne City in 1926. I haven't documented this is what has been given to me by someone who spent a lot of time researching Newville line.

I am looking for information about Mrs. Buster Newville. My grandfather, David McCourt, died in Nov. 1935 in South Omaha, Nebraska. In the memorial book from his funeral a Mrs. Buster Newville signed her name under relatives. I'm trying to find out if the Newvilles are really related to the McCourts and how. Thanks. Mariah's parents were Heman Frederick and Betsy PARKHURST BELDEN. Betsy is a sister of my gg grandfather, Noah PARKHURST; Heman is a brother of my gg grandmother Eliza BELDING PARKHURST. I have information on the BELDING/BELDEN and PARKHURST lines and will be happy to share. Please email me directly.

Does anyone know for sure where this John was born? LDS says in Halfmoon, Saratoga Co., NY. I have also heard that someone has linked him to the Neufvilles in French-Canada (Quebec). There are many of us researching this tree. Does anyone have this info? or promising clues? Is he descended from Jean Neuville in the New Rochelle settlement in 1688?
I am researching (attempting to) the Newville Family. The line that I'm looking for is Jocelyn May parents Jacob Van Rensellaer Newville & Emma Bennett. I have found different dates on his birth 11/28/1842 death 5/15/1911 Boyne City. His parents from research are found to be Robert O Newville & Sarah A Gifford. Any information would be helpful. I do have a picture of Jocelyn May. I have been told she died in childbirth of either twins or triplets. She married Cornelius Keel Deits on June 12, 1897 in Atlanta Michigan. That marriage is where my ggrandfather came from. Please help
