Did you know that there is a Nichols Surname DNA Project underway! This DNA Project focuses on the yDNA that is passed down from father to son, just as the surname is passed down. WHY DO WE NEED DNA IN FAMILY RESEARCH? DNA analysis doesn't replace family research, but it is a valuable tool that can fill some of the gaps when the records don't give all the answers. DNA can really break down the brick walls that we sometimes hit in family research! Men inherit a bit of DNA from their fathers. This DNA is passed from father to son through the generations, and can be used to further understand of their surname direct ancestor line. The role DNA can play in family history research is very exciting! The purpose of DNA in family history is to find others that have a COMMON ANCESTOR with you. When someone contributes DNA to the Nichols project, the DNA is compared to others who have contributed DNA. If your DNA 'MATCHES' another contributor, this means that you have a common ancestor. This common ancestor will probably be 3 or more generations back. By comparing your family tree to your 'MATCH' you both can learn more about your common ancestor. I would like to encourage those of you that are Nichols males to contribute a DNA sample. It is easy, the DNA test is done in the privacy of your home, and involves taking a mouth swab. Here is a link to a youtube video that shows how easy it is to use the DNA test kit and take the DNA sample. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN07Adpu7Bs
For those of you that don't watch youtube, let me try to describe. First you order the DNA kit and it is mailed to you. It includes a swab that you insert into your mouth and rub or scrap against the inside of your cheek. It doesn't hurt at all. Then you insert the tip of the swab into a small bottle and tighten the lid. You do this twice, with two swabs and two small bottles. Then you place the little bottles in the padded envelope that comes in the kit back and mail them off to be tested. As I said earlier, we need some Nichols males to contribute to this project. The more people involved the better chance we have of finding our genetic family, and tracing our family tree back to our immigrant Nichols ancestor and locating our origin and ancestors across the ocean. Please take a look at this. If you have a brother, uncle, father, or grandfather that has the Nichols surname, please ask them to contribute a DNA sample. Please help our project by promoting it within your family. Please share this information with others. The Nichols Surname DNA Project is set-up through FamilyTreeDNA, Houston, Texas. They are the favorite DNA resource for family historians.
