Re: looking for family - guidelines

For all genealogical research the same principles apply - Start with yourself & work backwards !
From your birth certificate you should get your parents names, from their marriage certificate you should get their parents names - your grandparents. (Death certificates are less reliable than marriage & birth certs.)
Look for the grandparents birth certificates to obtain their parents names, your GGparents, then look for their marriage certificate.
Searching old newspapers online, or microfilmed versions, may turn up a full report of the wedding: guest lists, and presents, have also been fully recorded in some older local newspapers.

You are very lucky that Victoria kept very good records for modern genealogical research, a lot of these are now available on the internet and/or through CR-ROMs at local libraries.
Furthermore, if your family was of Scottish origins, the President of Clan MacNicol (was Nicolson) in Melbourne has been collecting family trees from members and so I suggest that it may be appropriate to join that group if you feel your family were of Scottish origins.

Many early shipping indexes to Victoria, and other states, have been transcribed; several Nicolsons acquired the english H on arrival in Australia & NZ, some appear to have used both spellings of the name while other Nicolsons stayed with new version, so look for both spellings !
Good luck
Fiona

Hi Fiona

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I am aware of the site that you are talking about. The site at Rootsweb/Ancestry was created by my cousin's husband. Sadly my cousin has died.

I have seen the 1851 census for Snizort parish that you are talking about (age 32), this may be the Finlay that came out to Australia.

I also have Finlay's shipping details. He arrived in Australia on the 11 Mar 1858 on the ship Escort (age 38). And his parents are named as Malcolm and Sarah, and the relation to Australia is his cousin Malcolm Nicholson (my Great Great Grandfather).

Finlay's death from the NSW BDM
2555/1896 NICHOLSON FINLAY MALCOLM SARAH LIVERPOOL

Once again thanks for you help

Cheers
Suz

Re: Malcolm Nicholson from Isle of Skye & Mary Ann Harding

Greetings from NZ
Other researchers have already posted information on this couple on Rootsweb/Ancestry. Do a name search ("Mary Ann Harding" +Nicholson) on Yahoo or Google and you should find those postings with more information, including their marriage in Glasgow, 1829.

I was going to suggest that you try to find the name of their property as this will often give strong clues to the home croft or village on Skye. However, it has been recorded that one farm was named Kilmuir. This is also the parish where my Nicolsons resided prior to leaving for Australia.

In the 1851 census for Snizort parish, INV,(viewed on FreeCEN on the FreeBDM website) I found a Findlay, b. Kilmuir, age 32 at Uig, with a brother Donald,b. Snizort, 26 yrs, both unmarried.

I descend from Donald Nicolson & Mary MacDougal's son James Nicolson who came to VIC on the "Hornet" in 1854 with a "son" - Malcolm Nicolson, age 18. He may have been a neighbour or relation, as it was cheaper to travel as part of a family in those hard times.
Good luck
Fiona

Malcolm Nicholson from Isle of Skye & Mary Ann Harding

I a researching my family history on the Nicholson side.

My Great Great Grandfather came form the Isle of Skye. He departed from England on the 15th June, on the ship Lord William Bentinck. Arrived at Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia on the 8 Oct 1837 as an Unassisted Immigrant, with his wife Mary Ann Harding an 3 children (children's names not recorded).

Malcolm Nicholson died on the 3 November 1886 (aged 80), and is buried at Dawson River (Taree) General Cemetery, New South Wales, Australia.

Mary Ann Harding died on the 1 August 1875 (aged 66), and is buried with Malcolm, at Dawson River (Taree) General Cemetery, New South Wales, Australia. She was born in Scotland.

I have not been able to find out for certain who are Malcolm's or Mary Ann's parents. There have been some possible parents names given... but they are only may be.

Descendancy:
Malcolm Nicholson born abt 1806-1886 m Mary Ann Harding born abt 1809-1875.
Thomas John Nicholson born Australia abt 1840-1924 m Sarah Wilhelmiena Logan, born Scotland, arrived on the ship Bee.
Norman Hardy Nicholson born Australia 1888-1960 m Alma Gladys Mackay, born Australia 1893-1956. Their daughter Alma Gladys Catherine (Kitty) Nicholson is my mother.

Can anyone help with who Malcolm's and Mary Ann's parents are.

Thanks
Cheers
Suz

This George Nicholson may be my great great grandfather, since he lived in Owen Sound at this time and his name was George Peter Nicholson. Do you have any further information on him? I have not been able to get any further back with this family, although I think his parents were Catherine McDonald and Malcolm Nicholson and he had a brother named Sandy. I have been told that he was from North Uist, Scotland and immigrated to Toronto around 1835. I would appreciate any information you might have on this family.
Thank you
Ann

Orangeville Banner
Thursday, March 15, 1906

On Tuesday of last week, George Nicholson, who has rented the Owen Sound quarries in Mono, about two miles north of Orangeville, was carrying an axe in his left hand and a gun in his other when he slipped and fell and in doing so threw himself forward. The axe struck the little finger of his right hand and completely severed it, as nicely as if done by a physician.

I can't prove it, but I suspect that Michael J Nicholson
and Annie McCauley Herron (his wife) came from Donegal.

Wouldn't your Michael be Michael Neary instead of Michael Nicholson?

Annie gave birth to Hannah while her 1st husband was still alive-Peter Herron. He died in a mining accident. Annie then married Michael Nicholson and Michael raised Hannah and Mary Herron.

Heather,
I have only recently found out thru church records that my gggrandmother Hannah Neary's maiden name was NICHOLSON. So my information is very new and may ot be helpful. Hannah NICHOLSON was born abt 1818-1822. She uses the names Hannah, Honoria, and Honora on different census and other forms. She married Edward NEARY I believed both were from the Ballinasloe area but I DO NOT know this to be certain. Edward NEARY was a stone cutter/mason.
These are the names of her children in birth order, all born in Philadelphia. Catherine 1843, Hester 1844, John Ed. 1846, Francis Patrick 1848, Mary Ann 1849, Michael 1852, Daniel 1854, Hannah 1856 and Margaret 1864.

I noticed a few similar names in your group - Mary, Daniel, John, Patrick.
Hannah Nicholson arrived in Philadelphia PA bet 1839 - 1942. I believe she married Edward NEARY in Ireland. She was a catholic. Her mother's name may have been Honor/Honora.
Yes, I have been to Ballinasloe. I foud it difficult to get early records. The ones I did find were faded and most difficult to read. Would like to hear your thoughts about any connections we may have.
Hello,

There is not a lot that I can add to your information as have given you all I know about the Nicholsons at this time.

I did come across an entry reference 1840 List of Repealers, Ballinasloe where an Edward Neary was shown, also a Patrick Nicholson. Repealers supported the campaign of Daniel O'Connell for the repeal of the Act of Union 1801.
The Loyal National Repeal Society, Basllinasloe, Members of the Ballinasloe Morality Society. These details from the Freemans Journal 10.10.1840. I hve no idea if this refers to your Edward or if connectioned with the Patrick Nicholson shown.

I will keep your papers on file should anything else come to light and wouldbe grateful if you would do the same thing.

Regards,

Heather

I also would love to have a copy of the picture. Ellen's sister, Flora Amanda Nicholson, was married to my husband's g-grandfather Cyrus Wilson Black. My mail is: 28bamagirl@bellsouth.net

My info for her parents: Father: Hugh N. Nicholson B-1827 D-at age 47 in 1875.~ Mother: Rosanna Cooper B-30Aug1830 D-at age 45 in May 1875.(Rosanna's mother was a PAUL and I'm still trying to find her).~ The Nicholsons came from Chesterfield SC to NC on April 30, 1858.Rosanna's father was in the Civil War. They had five girls and two boys. Hugh and Rosanna are buried in the Matthews Cemetery just off Hwy. 74. (I think it is called the OLD Matthews Cemetery) I believe Hugh's father was James and his mother Mary. I have them on a census somewhere in my logs. Hope this helped.
