Re: Peter and Henry Nickerson in Bradford Co. Pa.

I am a desendent of Daniel Frank Wells, the brother of Henry Wells, both the sons of Samuel Wells of Bradford County, PA, whose descendents are a focus of my research.

I think you might consider that this family includes the step-children of Peter Nickerson/Nickson with the exception of Nelson and Emma.

"History of Bradford County Pennsylvania with Biographical Sketches" by H.C. Bradsby, Chicago: S. B. Nelson & Co. Publishers, 1891, p 1276
"S.M.Wells, farmer and mechanic, Orwell township, P.O. Herrickville was born in Orwell, November 11, 1834 and is a son of HENRY and BETSIE (Baily) Wells, the former of whom was born in this county, was a mechanic and a noted singing teacher, having taught many years, he removed to Illinois, where he died in 1850; he had seven children, viz: Elmira, married to Allen Brown, and died several years ago; Mary C. married to B.F.Walker, and died in 1890; S.M.; Chester, in Dakota; Charles, deceased; Henry in Florida; Abagail, married to Fred Newcome, of Iowa."
(MSJ note: a family name in the area and associated with the Wells family is Baillet, possibly the source of Betsey's maiden name.)

1840 PA Census, Bradford Co., Herrick Twsp., p 7/10 (Ancestry.com Images Online, MSJ)
Henry Wells 2 1 0 0 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 1
Males: 1 30-39 (Henry b 1801-1810)
2 under 5 (Chester b 1837; Charles b 1839)
1 5-9 (Samuel b 1834)
Females: 1 30-39 (Betsy born 1801-1810)
2 5-10 (Elmira b 1831; Maryetta b 1832)

According to Bradsby, it appears that Betsey took the children and returned to Bradford Co., PA, where she married Peter Nickson by September of 1850. She was 10-15 years older than Peter and he may have had at least two other young children by a first wife, or Henry Wells died earlier than stated.

===

The children in these three homes reflect the Bradsby account of the wells family, and further research on census and cemetery records bear out the ages and marriages.

1850 PA Census, Bradford Co., Rome Twsp., p 27/32, 9/10/1850, family 189, enumerated with Benjamin and Bathsheba Taylor household (Ancestry.com Images Online, MSJ)
Welles Chester 14 M PA; attended school
...
1850 PA Census, Bradford Co., Rome Twsp., p 27/32, 9/10/1850, family 190, enumerated with Almond and Esther Taylor household (Ancestry.com Images Online, MSJ)
Welles Charles 11 M PA attended school
...
1850 PA Census, Bradford Co., Rome Twsp., p 27/32, 9/10/1850, family 191 (Ancestry.com Images Online, MSJ)
Nickerson Peter 31 M NY farmer
Betsy 40 F PA
Marietta 18 F PA
Samuel 16 M PA
Henry 9 M PA
Abigail 7 F PA
Nelson 5 PA
Emma Jane 2 F PA
MSJ note: Peter may have had Nelson and Emma from a first marriage since neither are mentioned in the S.M Wells bio.
===

Sometime in the 1860s Peter and Betsey moved to Broome County, NY, not a great distance from where they previously lived, possibly following some of the children who moved to the area.

-----
1860 PA Census, Bradford Co., Orwell Twsp., P.O.
Paul

Besides your Foreman and my Bernard, here are the other children of Joseph and Rebecca; Eljiah, Flora, Byron, Ursa (who I think died young), and William. Joseph also had a first wife Maria Susan Larkin dau. of Nathanial Larkin and Mary ?, they had a daughter Josephine who I think was grew up with heer mother's parents and married Ralph Hiltz.

Joseph was the son of Thomas and Pamelia Smith dau. of John Osborn Smith and Elizabeth Nickerson. I do not know if Joseph was born in Pubnico or Barrington.

Thomas was the son of James and Mercy Newell dau. of Henry Newell and Elizabeth Grouard.

James was the son of Gideon and Sarah Bearse dau. of Benjamin Bearse and Jane Collins.

Gideon was the son William and Sarah Covell dau. of Joseph Covell and Hannah Bassett. Gideon left Cape cod and went to Barrington between 1765 and 1768.

William was the son of William and Deliverence Lombard.

William was the son of William and Mercy Williams dau. of Thomas Williams and Elizabeth Tate.

William was the son of William and Anne Busby dau of Nicholas Busby and Bridget Cocke.

The William who married Anne Busby is the Nickerson that came from Norwich England in 1638. I have not been able to confirm that he first landed in Salem, then Boston, and finaly the Cape.

I hope this helps.

Paul

Just learned that Joseph's parents are Thomas B. Nickerson and Pemelia M. Smith and Rebecca's parents were Jeremiah Goodwin and Mary J. Pickney.

I would like to know further back to the first to immigrate from England (I assume), and did they go directly to NS or to MA then to NS and back to MA.

My grandfather, Arnold lived in Dorchester, MA and his younger brother Alston lived in East Boston. Both lived there for over 50 years. They both were fish cutters at one the Boston fish piers for over 40 years. I think they left NS around 1928.

Their oldest brother , Harold told me at my grandfather's funeral in 1978 that our ancestry go in North America goes back to Seth Nickerson who went to NS during the Revolutionary War. I always wondered if that is true and if so, why? Loyal to the Crown?

Thanks for anything you can add.

Paul

Greetings Paul

It has been a long time since I've been to East Pubnico (early 70's), I've not been down since my Grandfather died. I knew my father had relatives in the Luneburg area but not in Dorchester. I grew up in Jamaica Plain. So I see you are my second cousin once removed.

How far back do you know?

Paul in
Westbrook, Me
(I've moved since the original post)

Daniel -
Maybe you can help me -- I don't know exactly how you fit into the NICKERSON line, but Guy Nickerson (son of Capt. Ed) was my Gr. Grandfather.
I have a photo of Guy & Evelyn (Rodrick) Nickerson with all their children but I do not know who is who other than Delight since she was the only female. My question is, do you know of ANY living relatives of Guy & Evelyn Nickerson that might be able to identify who is who??? ANY information you could share with me would be great.
Are you aware there is a NICKERSON family organization? I am a member and have lots of information; books, etc. I also have photos of many headstones from cemeteries in Brunswick Maine when I took a trip there last spring. If you like, I will put all this information on a CD and mail it to you - that way, you can print only what you want.

I was able to locate a "living son" of Elmer Nickerson (son of Guy Nickerson) who lives in Colorado. I wrote to him and he called me and said he would give me answers to specific questions. I sent him questions but never heard back from him. Other than that, I have unsuccessful in locating any living relatives.

Please feel free to e-mail me directl- I think we may be able to help each other.

Pam

No. I haven't heard of her. My Mother in law grew up knowing the Pangborn's. She was friends with Emma Pangborn. She stated that Florence Nickerson was a small statured lady and that she never spiced her food, when she cooked. I also seen a report where they lived on Academy street in Westfield, NY. There was a house fire started by the kids. Florence tried getting all the kids out. Immajean Pangborn died at the age of 1. That was in Nov. 1931 I think.

Nickerson Bentley Family Bible

My dad had mentioned in the past the existence of a "Bentley" family bible. While visiting this summer, I ran across said bible and while "Bentley" is included, there is a fair amount from early Nickersons.
The bible was published in 1824. Some of the earliest entries are;
Edward Nickerson, bornd January the 3rd (possibly 31st) 1761 and
Sarah Nickerson, Bornd August the 11th 1768.

Covel Nickerson, borned March the 26th day, 1794 and
Carlana Young Nickerson, borned August, the 3rd day, 1802.
The last entry is for my grandmother, Hazel Victoria Swanson, Born March 1, 1897.
I'm attempting to take pictures of the pages....
We'll see
I had an Aunt Violet and my Grandfather was from Clark's Harbor, NS. I will check on some things, ask my parents some questions, and get back to you. My Grandfather's name was Orville Cass Nickerson and I think Violet was his sister but may have been his sister-in-law. I don't recognize the names Gordon Nickerson, etc.
Jennifer Nickerson-Hoffman
