Hi Lindsey,

God, I haven't on this web site for, like ever (well 9 years indeed). I'm not really doing anymore research on my name because I couldn't go any earlier than you did. I was actually born in Moselle and I now live in Alsace (60km), but even here 'Nickles' is not a very common name. I also read somewhere, that it could have some swiss origins (again, Switzerland is just 2 hours away). Also, with WW1 and WW2, I know that a lot of people changed their names to sound more German, but Nickles doesn't really sound German to me. I'd say it sounds more English, which is good for me, since I'm an English trainer. Anyway. I haven't personally found any evidence or tarce of any spelling changes over the years,and by then, people were not exactly literate so any spelling may have been possible. The weird thing is that there are so many 'Nickles' people in the US while here (East of France region), we are not that many. They may all have immigrated to the States. But it still seems too me that the very name spelled 'Nickles' is rooted here in my region. I just don't know why they made it sound English...

Hello

Wiley Winton Nickles arrived in/around Conroe, TX and is found on several census records with wife Dora (Smith) where they raised their family.
W W and Dora NEVER spoke of their past to their children, indicating there was something hidden. Both W W and Dora are buried in Montgomery County, family bible was buried with Dora, and prior to W W's death, when asked by kids if he wanted to go "home", he said "hell no, we would all be killed if we went back there". To this day, none of us know where they came from. Any information, please share.

I talked to Earl a while ago. He told me some stories.

Send me your e-mail and I will send the phone # where he can be reached. He said he talked to you about a year ago. His friend Catherine died about 2 months ago and he was not allowed to stay in their home.

He told me Charles Oscar Nickles' mother ran off with a traveling salesman and moved to Chicago. That is when he went to live with the Crawfords. He thinks he may have a picture of her. Also a wedding picture of Nickles and Hewitt. He will look in the next few days and I will scan to you if you don't have them.

Earl said he met his grandmother one time. She was 7 day adventist. Last he heard his grandfather was in Oregan. He hasn't thought a lot about these people in a long time so some of his stories may be wrong. He has a book that list some family with b & d dates.

Earl does not know where he was born. He thought Shirley, NE but I can't find any town by that name.

Well, yes, Sally, maybe.
My Uncle Earl was born 5/20/15. His mother's name (on her marriage certificate anyway) is Etha Edna Hewitt. Seems the family lived several places in NE. I'm mostly interested in what happened to Earl's grandfather, John C. Nickles (father of Charles) or information as to why Charles was raised by the Crawfords.
Assuming it is indeed my uncle who is living next door, any information you could gleen from him would be most appreciated.

There is a 93 year old gentleman that just moved next door with his step-son. His name is Earl Ernest Nickles, b. 1915.

His mother was Ethel Edna Huwett or Hewett.

His father was Charles Nickles and they were in Shirley, NE.

Could this be your family.

I'm replying to a message you posted 8 years ago! My name is Lindsey Nicklas and a few years ago I was able to trace my Nicklas (variations include NICKLES) to Alsace. It seems that my Nicklas family migrated from the village of Berg in the Bas-Rhin region of Alsace in the early 1830's.
My 4x great grandfather, was born in France in 1777 and served for Napoleaon (according to early Pennsylvania history) before migrating to Western Pennsylvania (along with many other Alsatians). I have been able to trace the Nickles line back a few more generations in Alsace, but the Nickles lines get fuzzy - I haven't been able to discern where my family originated from. It seems there were many Nickles families in Moselle as well. If you're still doing research, I'd love to hear from you.

She is survived by a half sister, Mrs. Nellie Blessington of Worcester and several cousins, among them, Mrs. Hazel Morrison, also of Worcester. Miss Nickles attended the Calvary Baptist church.

Rex was my great uncle. According to the records that were given to me by Cecil Nickles, Rex was born in Mashan, Pawnee County Oklahoma on September 22, 1905 and was named David Record Nickles. He married Leona Lee Davis on May 16, 1934 in Aztec, San Jaun County New Mexico. Date of death was May 8, 1982, Gold Beach, Curry County Oregon.

Leona was born June 3, 1914 in Ophir, San Miguel County Colorado and died April 14, 1985, Gold Beach, Curry County Oregon.

Did your grandfather Aristides Nickles have any brothers?
My great-grandfather was, I believe, John Nickles who married Lola (maiden unknown)and raised their children out here in CA.
