There is alot of info on the internet in regards to this Nicks/Coble family, no reference to the baby girl that I can find. You might want to try and get a copy of her birth certificate. Even though you have no name, you do have date, parents and place of birth. It might be worth a try. Once you have her name, then you could start searching for adoption records.

Susan

All we know is what I've posted. She was born in Feb. or Mar. 1927 to Bessie L. Nicks. She was found on a porch in March 1927 in Burlington, NC and put up for adoption. Her half-siblings have never seen or and do not know who adopted her; they just know she exists, and want to find her and/or her family.

Thank you so much! This helps a lot. Bessie never married and I would expect "no survivors" since her baby girl abandoned and put up for adoption. I hope that baby girl or her family will find this thread and contact me. Likely the baby was adopted to someone who lived in NC in 1927. I really appreciate you taking your time to help me. That's what's so great about family historians - we help each other. In this case it's not me you are helping, but a elderly man who wants to find the half-sister he's never seen.

Thank you for checking the 1900 census & Social Security Death Index. I’ve seen the 1900 Orange Co. NC census. The first letter of the father's last name is definitely hard to make out. Fortunately, the family continues to the next page with Nicks, Bessie L. listed first, and Nicks is very clear there. In the 1910 Alamance census Bessie’s father is listed as Nicks, Hooker. In the 1920 Alamance census he is listed as Nicks, A. Hooker. The census Social Security index agrees with the birth information given to me by the family. I hadn’t gotten around to checking it, so I appreciate the death information. Your kind help is much appreciated!

I think the 1900 census shows her father as Alexander Nicks in Orange county NC. There is some family tree info on Alexander on Rootsweb, but doesn't seem to include Bessie. Social Security death index shows a Bessie Nicks b. May 19 1896, died October 31, 1992, Greensboro, Guilford NC.

I am not related.

A Burlington, NC newspaper story reported that a baby was left March 16, 1927 on a porch in Burlington, NC. The baby girl was put up for adoption. The information I have is
that she was born in February or March 1927. The mother was Bessie L. Nicks and the father was Earl Coble. Bessie was born May 19, 1896. Earl was born June 6, 1900.

I have found Bessie L. Nicks in the 1910 and 1920 Alamance Co. census records. Her father was named Hooker Nicks, and she had a younger brother named Thomas H. Nicks.

I am helping a family who hopes to reunite Bessie's half brother with her father's side of the family. If you have any information on Bessie L. Nicks, her baby girl, or their family, please contact me.
Hi Mary,

I'm so glad that I was able to help you out. I'm descended from Robert A. Nicks and Ora Evelyn Coons Valentine Nicks Lowery (she was married three times). They were my great-grandparents. I remember meeting her in 1968 when I was about 3. She died in 1971 when I was 6.

I just spoke with my mom, and she said that her aunt, Virginia Nicks Walz (Robert and Ora's youngest) visited us in Forest Grove, OR in the early '70's. During their visit they went to Portland to visit a relative. Mom thinks that might have been Delia (Virginia's half-sister).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,

Stephen

Hi, Stephen!

Thanks for your reply! That makes sense - I have Alfred Howard Nicks in my database. I show 4 children for Robert A. Nicks and Sarah Bench - Scott, Porter, Cora and Delia. Do you descend from one of them? Or another child? Or a child from his marriage to Ora Valentine?

Delia Nicks married my grandfather, John Killman. Somehow Sarah (Bench) Nicks ended up in Portland, OR, as did my grandfather's family - John Killman's family. I've always wondered who went to Portland first, and why. Delia Nicks and John Killman were 1st cousins - Sarah Bench Nicks was the sister of John Killman's mother, Lucinda Rose Bench.

Mary

Robert Nicks of Colonial Virginia, the pirate and smuggler

I am working on a write-up of Robert Nicks, who sailed as a Captain with letters of marque (which means he was a pirate) for the English in the French and Indian War. His ship was a colonial made vessel from Virginia, which made several transatlantic voyages between the colonies and Great Britain.

I had heard that in later years, after the French and Indian War and during the time of taxation on the colonies that he was arrested for smuggling in one of the colonies (not sure which one). Does anyone have any information on his arrest or know any primary source documentation for the arrest incident?

We must both have a William P. Nicks. Mine was the son of John Doak Nicks and his second wife(name unknown due to census records). Other children of John Doak Nicks were Margaret Ann Elizabeth Nicks b.1820, John J. A. Doak Nicks b.1822, Henrietta Nicks b. 1825, Edith Adda Nicks b. 1828, Martha A. Nicks b. 1830 and William P. Nicks b. 1831 all in Lincoln Co., Tenn..

John Doak Nicks was the son of Doak Nicks and his wife, Margaret, they were all in the Lincoln Co., Tenn area from the 1820s til after Doak Nicks' death in 1853. I have a copy of his will in which listed his children and the children of John Doak Nicks, who predeceased his father.

I am descended from John Doak Nicks' first wife Sarah Rogers, who married Samuel P. Irwin after her divorce from John Doak Nicks in the early 1820s in Lincoln Co.

If I can be of any help let me know. Thanks.

When the battery of which he was a member was subjected, during the early morning , to a Banzai attack by approximately fifty Japanese, Private First Class Nicks (thn Private Nicks) left the safety of his slit trench and crawled through hostile rifle fire to supply hand greades to a flank position shere he, with four other men of his unit, succedded in repelling the attack.
