i think these 4 are the same ones as in the 1841 census of main st, the children of william.

Thanks Christine for that, your a doll.Thats the kind of information I am looking for that is not available to me over here in Ontario,Canada.Looks like they had a good chunk of Main St.at that time.
I have the last will and testiment for my 3rd great grandfather(William Nicol) and when he died in 1845,his property was worth 800 pds.Also living on Main St. and in the tailor buisness.He also had a lot of people working for him.

Hi Christine,I was unaware of Pollok Academy and will look into that further.Other names that were related to the Nicol family were Rutherfords from Ireland and Park,Milree,Mathieson,Lochhead from Scotland.My mothers grandparents were also living with them at #29 Main.After my mother left in 1930,her grandfather died in 1931 at #1425 Pollokshaws Rd. which I see now is a dental office but it looks like the original buiding.It might have been some kind of health care facility at the time because his death cert. states usual residence as 29 Main St.
Also they were all Presbyterians.
Did you see the link I sent to the building at 23a Main St.?
They were all in the clothing buisness as far back as the late 1700s as far as I can see.

hi,
i thought it might have been Sir John Maxwell school that your mother went to but it seems to have been an industrial school for boys when it opened. it is still there but is now a gaelic school.
i did find the following information about another school in the area which is no longer there but was on pollokshaws rd which runs parallel with shawbridge st - "Pollok Academy, which had been established as an elementary school through the efforts of the Burgh council and Sir John Maxwell 8th bart. This was built in 1856 and was part designed by Alexander "Greek"Thomson. It lay on Pollokshaws Road, just opposite the present entrance to Pollok Park, on the vacant site south of the Burgh Hall. It was later converted to a secondary school, and eventually demolished in the 1960s"
Until recently Shawbridge st was mostly high rised flats with some shops. the old pollokshaws parish church is still there on shawbridge st and the RC church just 5 mmins away.
there seems to be plenty of websites about pollokshaws.
were your family that lived here all nicol,s?

Hi Christine and thank-you very much for the reply.She lived at #29 Main St.Pollokshaws,Renfrewshire which I believe is now called Shawbridge St.She was born in Canada but returned to Glasgow when she was 2 months old and stayed on Main St. until 1930.

Census reports show her relatives living there at that time.I have many Birth,Death and marriage Cert for most of her relatives since the early 1800s and I guess most of them are buried in that area as well.I would love to come there some day and I'am sure I would find many of their grave sites.
Also the school that my mother would have gone to would be of great interest to me if I could find out the name of it.She also had an older sister Mary(b.1914)that also would have gone to school there.

My name is Phillip John Nicol, born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia in 1940.
I lived my younger years in Burnie, Tas and I believe that I am the 5th generation John Nicol from the Isle of Skye - according to my Uncle Alan, from Smithton, Tas.
I left Tassie in 1968 and came to the Mainland, where I have lived since - currently in Singleton, NSW.

WELL KNOWN CIVIL ENGINEER DIES SUDDENLY FROM HEART ATTACK

Captain Thomas W Nicol, one of the best known civil engineers in the south, died very suddenly at his home, 360 North Lafayette Street, Wednesday morning of heart failure. Captain Nicol had been in the best of health and was preparing to leave for Montgomery on Wednesday morning. At the time of his death he was chief engineer of the Alabama Public Service Commission.
Funeral services will be held this morning at 10 o'clock from the residence.
Mr Nicol was born in New Orleans January 10, 1852. He spent his early life on a plantation at St Gabriel, Iberville Parish, LA. Entering upon his career as an engineer, Mr Nicol first had practical experience in Texas where he was engaged in railroad building. Later, he went with the United States levee system and spent much time in work on the lower Mississippi river. Leaving government service, he entered the employ of the Southern Railroad, first as resident engineer, then becoming division engineer and finally chief of railroad, locating in the Tennessee mountains. He was also at one time in charge of the lock at McGraw shoals on the Tombigbee river.
Mr Nicol's next work was with the city of Mobile, he being the man who devised and superintended construction of the city's sewage and waterworks system. It was after the completion of this work that Mr Nicol was employed by the Interstate Commerce Commission to make estimates on railroad projects and because of his wide experience in this line chosen as consulting engineer of the Alabama Public Service Commission.
In 1875 Mr nicol married Miss Kate Pomeroy of Mobile who survives him. Besides his wife, Mr Nicol is survivied by two daughters, Mrs W F Porter and Mrs R D Hooks, Jr; three (sic) sons, W H Nicol of Louisville KY, and J R Nicol of Mobile, besides other relatives. Mr Nicol had resided in Mobile for the past 40 years.

Thomas Walter Nicol was the son of George NICHOL and Eleanor Klinepeter. They were m 6 Mar 1851 Iberville Parish LA. After his father's death, his mother m Joseph Anger of Iberville Parish.
Catherine 'Kate' Pomeroy, b 1853 Mobile AL d 1935 Tuscaloosa AL. They m 15 Jul 1875 Mobile AL.
Kate was the daughter of Porter B Pomeroy and Euphrosinia Collins. They m 11 June 1846 Mobile. After her father's death in 1859 in Mobile, 'Frozine' Pomeroy m Samuel A Miller.

Thomas and Kate Nicol, along with several of their children, are buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile on the lot with the Pomeroy Mausoleum. Also on the lot are her father and several of her siblings.

This is not my family. I was asked to research Porter B Pomeroy (b 1817 NY d 1859 Mobile AL) who was a merchant in Mobile. Hope it helps someone.

Just read your post, I have many Nicols from the Dailly area in S. Ayrshire.

David Nicol of Dailly married Margaret Guthrie 10 FEB 1778. His son John Nicol (born 11 MAR 1785) married Janet Gray of Kirkoswald Parish. They had David, Jean, Andrew (born 20 AUG 1817), Margaret, John, William (my GGGrandfather) and James. Most of this younger generation worked the mines and emerging railroad and emigrated thru NY, NY in late 1840s through 1850s, working on burgeoning railroad construction in NY and NE PA. Eventually settling in Scranton-Carbondale area of NE PA in later half of 19th century.

Members of this family regulary visited Ayr, Alloway, Girvan, Maybole, Craigie and surrounds. We have local connections to Niven and extensive MacLatchie records centering on Craigie Parish, south of Kilmarnock.

Any potential relations out there?

i have an alexander nicol b-1884 macduff banff who arrived in new york on the ss caledonia on the 21st june 1908. i have been told his brother john went as well but as yet i have not found him. the address that alexander was going to was given as alex cranna? 248 glenwood ave,east orange NY. i have no info on him after his arrival in NY.
alexander is the son of alexander nicol and mary donald.

Hello, Alex! I saw your post on RootsWeb and I thought I'd say hello. I am Alexander Nicoll Gerli from NC. My namesake maternal Grandfather ws a surgeon in NYC for many years, and I have his Grandfather's (Donald Nicoll) Coat of Arms, granted by the Royal College of Arms in 1863; quite a document! I'd be interested in learning what you turn up on RootsWeb. I know that our Scottish Ancestry is in the Hebrides, Nicol(son) being a Scandinavian name, and dates back to early times, perhaps around 1000AD when the first Norse came to the Hebrides.

Hi I am also new to the research of heritage but have original documentation passed on to me, my gggg granfather was andrew nicol from midlothian and was 31yrs old in approx1889. he moved to australia and married here. I know that he was a bootmaker and a mason and also ioof. he left his ship in south australia and travelled through to nsw nanna told me he was a seaman who finished his time and got off to live in oz. not much help i guess. thanks vicki

I no he came to australia and embarked in south australia as a seamen and found his way to nsw. he was 31yrs old in 1889.

Thomas Nicol parents were James Nicol and Marion Hall. My ggg grandfather John Nicol (born 1753) married Ann Bonnar in 1779. William Nicol (1820 Alloa, Clackmannanshire) and Christina ( born 1815 Forgen, Banffshire married abt 1848. Christina had the following children from the first marriage: Jean Lindsay 1840 Turriff, Aberdeen, James Lindsay 1842 Crieff, Perthshire and John Lindsay 1844 Crieff, Perthshire.

Thomas Nicol was born 1855 in Stepney Middlesex to Thomas Nicol (born 1822 Tullibody Clackmannan Scotland) and Julia (born 1821 in Stepney, Midddlesex). Thomas Nicol (1855)
married Emily in abt 1874. They had Thomas 1875, William 1877, Christina 1879, Stephen 1883, Robert 1885, Frank 1889 and Minnie 1891. All the children except Minnie were born in Stratford, Essex. Minnie was born in West Ham Essex.

I am researching the family of Thomas Nicol, who was born in Edinburo, Scotland, March 31, 1850. He married in Chicago to Wilhelmina (Minnie) Henderson on Feb 10, 1879. There son William's middle name was Archibald. Is this the same family?

Hi, I have just to-day been up to Gamrie to locate some of my wifes Nicol family ancestors.
We have a William Nicol Born 21 sep 1777 Gamrie married to Ann Ogilvie born 31 jul 1766
so far I have only managed trace
4 children
James born 23 mar 1796 Gamrie DOD 14 mar 1864 garden st Macduff
Ann born 8 jul 1798 Gamrie
William born 8 jul 1798 Gamrie Twins ??
George born 19 aug 1803
We have a part tree going back to Walter Nicol 1720 but are still working on it
I would be happy to let you see the tree if it can help us both

Sarah Jane Nicol born 1860 in VIC. Her parents are Mary Ann Carter and David Knight Nicol born 1837 Kincardine. His parents are James Nicol born in Forfar 1803. His parents are Jean Brown born 1773 Montrose and David Nicol 1769 Forfar.

My mother was born in Canada in 1920 but went back to Pollockshaws until she was nine.Her father was george nicol and her mother was annie nicol.They lived at 29 main St.
My question is what school would she have gone to during that period.?

Charles (b 3/26/1832) married Janet Thomsen (b abt 1835) on 4/17/1868 at Caputh. To them were born 2 daughters: Jessie born abt 1869 and Eliza Agnes Leckie born abt 1870.

On 6/2/1893 Eliza married William Bayne Robb (b abt 1864 at Bendochy) at Caputh. To them was born Eliza abt 1895 at Rattray.

On 2/17/1894 Jessie married John Nicol (b abt 1869 at Cupar, Fifeshire) at Caputh.

I'd be very interested in making contact with anyone related to any of these people. The original Charles above was my g grandmother's brother. My GGGrandfather was Thomas Nicol born in Ayton, Scotland, married Jane McEwan Mennon also from Ayton. GGrandfather was also Thomas and married Mary Mennon. Thomas died in 1917 on the HMS Cornwalis. My grandmother was Jessie Nicol. Her and her mother imigrated to the US in 1926. Settled in Maryland. Would love any information on this side of my family.

Am looking for any information relating to the above who was born in Inverness, Scotland. He was a stipendiary magistrate and for some years lived in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, West Indies.

His father was Dr. John Inglis Nicol who was Provost of Inverness from 1840-1843 and whose portrait hangs in Inverness Town House.

Hi. There is a scotlands people website run by the gov. there for geneology. It will cost you though so be prepared, about $11.00 to start I believe. I think it is scotlandspeople.gov. Google it and I think you will get the right web address.

I have found quite a bit on him but still am hunting for his brothers and/or sisters. His Mom was Margaret Mann and Dad was also John Nicol. Dr. John was born July 4, 1828 and died in the USA (New York) March 13, 1910. I also need info on his first wife Elizabeth Urquhart (married either 1857 or 1860). They had five boys: John D., Robert, James, Frank and William(who was in Queensland Australia) but I have no birth dates for them.

I just read your post. My GGGGrandfather James Nicol was from Tannadice born around circa 1810. He married Janet Hunter in Careston in 1830. I don't know any more info than that. I think he and his wife died young because I can't find them on the 1841 census or death record. Anyway I thought their might be a connection between your Nicol's and mine.

Have you found any answers to your last post in 2006 on John Nicol ? Do you have a Robert Nicol Beattie b 17 Sept 1870, son of James Beattie and Ellen Nicol ? Buried in Hope Cemetery, Barre, VT. Could this be your relative. Joni
