I'm going to jump in here because my ancester is Elizabeth, sister to Margaretha, Anna, Agnes, Katherina, Rose, Nicholas P., and John Heisdorf. We come from the Franz Heisdorf line and I'm looking to learn more about the family too. My Elizabeth married Heinrich Kartheiser, which is my direct line. After he died she married Nic Salm and from there I've lost the connection of her life. Can anyone help me? I'm happy to share what I have. Jeanne

I just realized your posted query is old, but I am one in a long line of Albert Nicolais. Albert Alonso Nicolai (b. 1997) was my paternal grandfather, so the 1860s Albert who emigrated from Germany started our line in America. My father, son of Albert A., was Albert James, b. 2/23/1923. I am Albert Thomas, b. 10/12/1950, and my son is Albert Timothy, b. 6/11/1982. For what it's worth. Glad to add more if you're still interested.

William NICOLAI Biography, b. 1823 GER to NY to NJ to NY to IL to WI

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 862.

Town of Greenfield

WILLIAM NICOLAI, farmer, Section 20; P. O. Sigel; was born in Germany, in 1823; emigrated to the United States in 1849, and stopped in New York about two years, when he went to New Jersey one year, after which he returned to New York, and stayed one year. He then went to Illinois, and stayed about two years, after which, in August, 1852, he came to La Crosse, and is therefore one of the oldest settlers in the county. In the spring of 1853, he moved on his present farm, 40 acres of which he had previously purchased; but he now owns 280 acres. In 1853, he was married to Louisa Horstchaffer, born in Germany in 1833; they have had eight children, four of whom are living - Otto, born May 3, 1856; Louis, born Feb. 3, 1858; George W., born June 15, 1861; Adolf, born Dec. 6, 1867. Mr. N. has held town offices several terms, and is at present Justice of the Peace. He is a member of the Evangelical Church, and a Democrat.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

Clara Nicolai, b. late 1800s, lived Wisconsin

Clara Nicolai married Otto P. Schmidt (brother of my ancestor) in about the 1910s. Later in life Otto lived in Waupun, Dodge County, Wisconsin. (Waupun, however, is split between Dodge county and Fond du Lac county, so they may have been in either county.) They had one son named Darwin. Clara and Otto divorced sometime in the early 1920s, and Clara remarried a man with the surname Michaels. Darwin was known as Darwin Michaels. Otto later married a woman named Clara Voss and also divorced her.

Looking for information on any person mentioned above, especially decendents of Darwin.

Steve NICOLAI m. Marlene JUNET

See the following Nov. 7, 2005, message which I posted to the RootsWeb Bexar County, Texas, mailing list on behalf of Doris MATRIAN of Bremerhaven, Germany, who has been attempting to contact her husband's cousin Marlene JUNET NICOLAI for the past seven years. Mrs. NICOLAI is believed to have previously been living in Houston, Texas; San Antonio, Texas; and possibly Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TXBEXAR/2005-11/1131402...

Marlene NICOLAI married a U.S. serviceman named Steve NICOLAI and moved to Texas. She lived in France following World War II. Mrs. NICOLAI possibly worked in a hospital operating room when she lived in Houston. It is estimated that she would now be about 63 years old. She was still going by the name NICOLAI in 1990.

Through the help of some other researchers, we have found the following address and phone number for Mrs. NICOLAI in public records, but mail is being returned to Mrs. MATRIAN as "Attempted, Not Known." An attempt to contact Mrs. NICOLAI at the phone number listed was not helpful.

Marlene NICOLAI
3007 Blakely Ave.
Eau Claire, WI 54701
Telephone: (715) 838-9350

Can anyone help Mrs. MATRIAN locate her husband's cousin? Mrs. MATRIAN's e-mail address is as follows:
pmmatrian@vr-web.de

Sue Tilleman (STilleman@satx.rr.com)
Live Oak, Texas

I always thought he was from the actual town of Luca not outside, but who knows. I know he married a Quilici named Thusula and they moved to the US together. Maybe he's realted to your father?

Edwin Frank Nicolai

I am really fishing here... We found out when my gfather passed away in 1987 that his name was not what he had been using for his entire life. He HAD been using Edward Franklin Clayton, but found out in 1973 (when his company did a background check) that his name was really Edwin Frank Nicolai. He was born in NYC in 1909. Anyone with any idea of what sites I can hit to get birth records or records for orphanages (his mother put my gfather and his brother in an orphanage in 1912 or so), PLEASE let me know! I am at kstewa@peoplepc.com. Many thanks in advance!!!

Nicolai of Wisconsin

I am looking for any connection to any Nicolai from any county in Wisconsin. This family seems non-existent as it was originally spelled (Nicolai). My line is through Caroline Wilhelmine Amalia Nicolai b. 1844 in Gotha, Saxony, Germany. She emmigrated in 1854. She married George Henze 1865 in Watertown, Wisconsin. She had one known brother, H.E. Nicolai who , at one time, may have lived in Washington state. Would like to hear from anyone who has this surname in their line.

Paula,

It is certainly possible that your Nicolai mine will connect one of these days. Some of them may have settled in Indiana while others moved on to Wosconsin. Since my first post here, I have located references to three bios for the Nicolai name in Wisconsin. I have sent for copies of these bios and will let you know when I receive them. One is for H.E. Nicolai (my gggrandmother's brother); another for a Moritz Nicolai; the other for a William Nicolai.

Linda

Theodore lived at Elkhorn, Walworth County, WI about 1894....not sure yet where he died or where he is buried.
Hi Annie,

I really....really think that we have a connection here. Do you know the name of your Ted's wife (or wives)? Can you give me the name of Louise's husband? Can you also give me the names of his (your husband's) aunts?

I just recently came across a picture of my gggrandmother, Lizette (Henze) Krueger and Louise Nicolai taken at Beloit, WI on Aug.19, 1902. Would your husband recognize a picture of his grandmother, Louise, when she was about 20 years old? I could scan the picture and send it to you.

I was in Big Bend this summer and visited the Rural Home Cemetery, but not knowing Louise's married name......well, you know....hind-sight.....why didn't I think to ask you before I went up there. Anyway, I made some listings at the cemetery...many Nicolais. They are on my web site at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cabin/4857/ruralhome.htm

Will be anxious to hear from you.

Linda

I looked at a map that I have of Rural Home Cemetery; it's a copy, of course, and it's very hard to read. I can't really tell if one of the sections say "Deering" or "Darling". There were also Darlings in the Big Bend area.

I have put the picture of Louise on the web at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cabin/4857/photo14.html

Take care,

Linda

My ggrandmother Josephine Parot (sp.?) was born in France. Josephine sister's names were Genevieve, Kate and Isabelle.
Tracing them in Europe has been very difficult since Nicolai is a common name throughout Europe.

My mother's mother was a Nicolai. I am trying to find information on the Nicolai family who emigrated to Australia from Germany. My great grandfather was John Nicola from Marburg Germany. His father was Konrad Nicolai from Marburg and his father was Ernst Nicoalai from Marburg. I think the town in Marburg is called "Beitziesdorf"?? but I cannot find this on a modern map. I cannot trace further back than Ernst but he was born in 1800 and was married to a Gertrude Hampel.
Thankyou Catherine

My G - Grandmother

I am searching for my Great Grandmother Christina Nicolai. She arrived in this country from Germany between 1910 - 1920 (census records). Father = Harry Nicolai; Mother= Lena Nicolai. She married my G-Grandfather, William Lonnie Wagner in 1915-1916 in Philadelphia (Germantown) and they are both listed in the 1920 Census living with Harry and Lena. My G-Grandfather was an Electricians Mate in the U.S. Navy at that time, at the Philly Naval Yard.

However, my Great Uncle William Wagner (B-1917) is not listed as a member of the household in the 1920 Census.
My Grandfather, Harry David was born in Philly in Oct-'22 probably at the Naval Yard.

Harry & Lena are listed in 1930 Census living in Bucks County, PA. By family legend, the Wagners had moved to Grandfather William's hometown of Marion, NC. However, they don't show up in the 1930 Census. Also, Christina apparently "ran off" in approx. 1925. No one seems to know exactly when or why, or with whom.

Is any out there familiar with this family?

Also send E/mail to my father: scottwagner@wideopenwest.com
I understand he was an only child and apparently went to school in Detroit, Michigan. He married Carolyn Scrimshaw Reese who claimed Alice spoke German. My grandfather enjoyed telling me his father was a forger, which of course I later understood was a blacksmith. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
