When my grandfather, Edmond Portner, arrived in this country from Switzerland the ship's manifest indicates he was joining his uncle, Jules Nicolet, in Cleghorn (Cherokee, Iowa). After reading the messages on this board, I see that Jules was married to Emma Portner so I'm assuming that Emma was the actual relative. I'm trying to trace the Portner line back into Switzerland and also trying to gather more info on Edmond. I know he farmed in the midwest most of his life. Knowing more about Jules might give me additional clues. Any info would be appreciated.
