Alastair,

I've just seen your post on Ancestry.com as follows:

"My ancestor, Edward Peters born May 16, 1818, married Augusta Jane Nicolls, sixth daughter of General Sir Jasper Nicolls in 1841 at Calcutta Cathedral. I would like to make contact with any descendants since I have an old Nicolls family tree and much other information if anybody is interested."

Augusta was indeed the sixth daughter, but my wife's descended from her the eight child, and only boy, her brother Francis (known as Frank). (Confusingly, the seventh daughter was called Frances with an e).

Frank had 10 children - Annie, Jasper, Florence, Ethel, Lovell, Francis, Ernest, Cyril, Emily and Hugh.

The younger Francis had five children - Ellen (known as Nell), Moll, Jasper, Lillian (known as Emma), Edith.

Jasper had one child, Frances Ann, who is, as we speak sitting next to me - she's my mother in law! She has two daughters, Lillian Dona (known as Dona) and Mary Barbara, who is my wife.

Dona has two children - Isobel and Nathaniel. We have two - Phillippa and Peter.

According to a book written by Jasper in 1974, the family is descended from Nichols d'Albiax, who came over from Normandy at the time of Edward the Cofessor. In 1307, we find Nichole possessor of a Manor bearing the same name in Kineford Hundred, Essex, which the family held until 1377.

Sir Edward Nicholls who died in 1682, was created a Baronet, which has made the family tree relatively easy to track down, albeit the spelling has moved a fair bit in the last 700 years!

I realise it's taken 6 years to get this reply, but here you are!

Please do get in touch.

Mark
Hi Alistair, I'd love to see the images you mention. Does the picture on this web page look anything like the pictures of Goodrest that you have?

http://www.crosfields.com/section.asp?catId=101

This is the main (or White) Building of Crosfields school, which I think may be where Sir Jasper lived.

In your researches, have any of you come across the references to Lola Montez - and her friendship with Sir Jasper?

joss

Hi Joss, I have some old photographs of Goodrest Lodge taken, if memory serves me correctly as I am at 'work' right now, when Sir Jasper and family were still living there. I am not sure what has happened to the house in more recent times. I also have photos of his gravestone.

Hello Benjamin, glad to hear you've made it over here! Our old small gauge railroads are quite wonderful - such a shame we didn't adopt Brunel's proposed wide gauge for the rest of the UK...

I wish someone had left me a castle... I'd soon fill it with old cars and pictures..

Even though Jasper lived at Shinfield, some 5 miles out of Reading (for his last few years), his memorial is in Chichester, some 60 miles away (then it would have been at least a day's ride..) Is his grave in Reading?

best wishes

joss

Joss:

One of the best train rides I ever took was riding the EuroStar from Paris to London, hoping on the Tubes, and then taking a local to Reading to see the station. I would have looked for Jasper's grave but at that time did not realize it was close by. Jasper calling Reading home may be the reason GA Nicolls (b. 1817) designed the Reading, PA USA railroad station after the Reading Englans station. Any on the way back to London I caught the express and stood in the vestible with the top portion of the door open. Now that was a treat.

Anyway my records indicate that Anne Hall Hoff (daughter of Sara Taylor Nicolls - b. May 15, 1902 & John B. Hoff -- they married on Feb. 6, 1932) married Lewis J. McCoy. Margaret McCoy (aka Peg) and Kathleen McCoy are daughters of Anne & John Hoff. Margaret McCoy & Karl Stamm filed for a marriage application on August 6, 1986. Kathleen McCoy was married to Brian Chistopher Kelly in West Reading, PA USA on January 10, 1981. They still live in the area with three children -- Brian Chistopher Kelly, Meghan Elizabeth Kelly and Kylenn Anne Kelly.

I have talk to Kathleen (McCoy) Kelly on occasions but I have not followed up in getting all the information I really should.

Here is another interesting Nicolls story. Anne Nicolls (b. Feb. 25, 1909 d. Feb 7, 1949) was given a large commodious castle as a wedding present; however she hated the castle! This castle known as Stokeys Castle still stands near Reaidng, PA USA.

I hope this helps
Benjamin, Reading station (UK) is also celebrated for being along 'God's Wonderful Railway' (aka Great Western Ry), and GAN may well have wanted something that was associated with Brunel's great railway.

I am at the moment trying to establish whether Sir Jasper's residence of 1848 (just before he died) - Goodrest Lodge, Shinfield (nr. Reading, Berks), still exists. I am working with the school that bought the Goodrest estate in the 1940's to establish whether Sir Jasper's house survives. The complication is that the houses of Shinfield appear to have changed name over time, and its not clear how much. The current Goodrest Lodge is a modern building - which may signal the demolition of Sir Jasper's place - but watch this space.

joss

Hi Jocelyn, your posting was very interesting. I am connected to the Nicolls too - Sir Jasper was my 3xgreatgrandfather - and I inherited original copies of the vast family tree which I have since spent time updating. For example, I see that your grandmother was born August 9, 1891.

I had heard about the memorials in Chichester Cathedral but I have never been there. Can I be very cheeky and as if it would it be possible to have copies of the photos you took ?

Best regards,

Alistair

Hi, My name is jocelyn martin, my grandmother was a very proud nicolls - heloise scott N (born in Croydon in around 1890). My parents gave me jasper as my second name in her honour.

she had a portrait of her great uncle Sir Jasper which she gave to a distant relation - I wonder if that is the picture referred to in this thread? I would really like a copy of that picture - is that possible Anne?

i went to chichester cathedral last weekend, and photographed the nicolls memorials there which have recently been reinstated. I remember when as a small child in the '70s my parents and I discovered them in the baptistry tower - my grandmother didn't even know of their existence.

My line comes from Sir jasper's brother Gustavus, through james edmund tannatt N and his son jasper heriot edmund N to my grandmother. JHEN married a scott from Maine.

No more for now, I hope this will be of some interest.

I am more than willing to share the information that I have to update the family tree. Since the tree is upto date until 1929, can you tell me if Gustavus Anthony Nicolls born on May 6, 1901 and died on July 5, 1921 had any offsprings? Fredrick William Nicolls born on May 26, 1906 and died on October 31, 1961 was a outstanding citizen of Reading. He was a avaid golf fan and even paid for the trophies for the Berkshire Country Club golf tornament. The trophies actually had on them "The Nicolls Trophey." I have one from the early 1950's. I have no record of Fredrick having any children. Fredrick did have two sisters and one brother (the G.A. Nicolls I asked you about).

I have been able to put together a family tree for Fredrick's sister Sara Taylor Nicolls how married John B. Hoff. They had at least one daugter Anne Hall Hoff who married a Mr. McCoy. I have more on this branch.

Can you also answer me if these two people appear in the family tree?

There are two important Edward Nicolls in British history (they could be the same person.)

Colonel Edward Nicolls was incharge of the British military campaign in Florida during the war of 1812. Although, many people do not know of his navy battle in Florida were he lost his eye; he is well know for his letter he wrote to the New Orleans Newspaper warning of the British attack and asking for the support of the local people.

The other Edward Nicolls was Lord Manor of Heaton.

I look forward to future correspondents.
Hi Margaret,

John Nicolls of Arran was born in 1560 during the reign of King James V of Scotland and lived on his paternal estate which descended to him through a long line of ancestors.
He married Fanny Buchanan, sister of the famous poet and author, George Buchanan who was at one time tutor to James IV of Scotland. He d. 1612 and had issue:

1. Archibald of Rossan b. 1590 Entered the service of James I of England [James IV of Scotland] as a Cornet 1610 in Col Clayton's Regiment of Dragoons. Promoted Capt 1650. Soon afterwards a rebellion broke out in Ireland and Col Clayton's regiment, with other troops, were sent to restore order. For these services they were rewarded the forfeited estates of the Irish rebels by order of Oliver Cromwell in 1653. Capt Archibald Nicolls for his services received nearly 3,000 acres of land in the counties of Longford and Leitrim.
After the rebellion was suppressed he built for himself a small lodge in the townland of Kilkenny which overlooked a small lake in County Leitrim, which he occupied during the hunting and fishing season. During one of these excursions he died after only two day's illness.
m. Helen Colquhoun, dau of Lt Colquhoon, a brother officer in Col. Clayton's regiment. d. 1655 buried at Carrigallen church. Had 4 sons and 1 daughter.

And a second son John born 1593 and died without issue.

Hope that's helpful.

Alistair

Dear Peg:

John Nicolls married Fanny Buchman, the sister of George Buchman. The Buchmans were descendants of Earl of Lenox. They had two recorded childern John Nicolls & Archibald Nicolls (born circa 1608 and died in 1680). Archibald had 5 children (four boys and one girl).

I am sorry for not responding sooner.
I have a lot more Nicolls information. Maybe we can help each other bridge the gaps. I live in Reading, PA and have written several history books on the Reading Railroad. G.A. Nicolls basically built the Reading Railroad. The main station in Reading, PA was designed by G.A. Nicolls after the railroad station in Reading, England. Sir Jasper William Nicolls made is home in Reading, England which would answer how and why G.A. Nicolls would do this.
Hi Peg,

Thanks for your mail. [Sir] Jasper and William Dann Nicolls' parents were Gustavus who was born 2.11.1743 and Elizabeth Dunn. They were married on September 2, 1777 and he joined the British Army and was at one time Town Major of Dublin. She died March 17, 1787 and was buried in the churchyard at Finglaw] of Gillingham, Kent. He died in 1824.

[Sir] Jasper had other siblings too:

Anne Elizabeth, b. 5.12.1780, m. Rev. William HARRISON 12.11.1801 [11.4.1768 - 1.9.1846] Vicar of Fareham, died 9.7.1853. I have much other information if you need more help.

Regards,

Alistair

I am very interested in information on Jasper Nicolls. I've been researching my family history for only a month now and the family dynamics are so confusing. I know thought that Jasper Nicolls married Anne Badcock. in the 1700's. I've got that William Dann was his brother, but who were their parents? My grandmother was Sarah R. Taylor and her husband was Gustuvus A. Nicolls a descendent of the Jasper and William Dann. The Nicolls, Muhlenberg's and the Taylor families are all related. Let me know what you have.

Thanks
Peg Stamm

I'm also looking to see where the hall name comes in. I know that David Sr. was in the printing business with Benjamin franklin and his son william then moved to reading to start his own printing business, but I'm not sure who he married? My mother was Anne Hall Hoff Mccoy and Her aunt's name was Anne Hall Nicolls. Please let me know
Thanks
Peg Stamm

Re: G.A. Nicolls

Dear Kay,

If you ever read this message, you made a mistake on your original message. Fredrick W. Nicolls' mother was not Rosa Muhlenburg. Rosa died on May 17, 1867. Fredrick was not born until Feb. 7, 1870. Fredrick Nicolls' mother is Anne Hall Muhlenburg, G.A. Nicolls' second wife. Here is where it gets confusing. G.A.Nicolls' first wife Rosa had a brother named Henry Muhlenburg. This Henry Muhlenburg married his cousin Anne Hall Muhlenburg. They produced one child - Henry Muhlenburg. Rosa's brother (Henry Muhlenburg) died on Jan 9, 1854. G.A. Nicolls' first wife Rosa died on May 15, 1867. On Jan 28, 1869 G.A. Nicolls marries Rosa's brother's wife - Anne Hall Muhlenburg. Thus, G.A. Nicolls' becomes the step father of Henry Muhlenburg. Both G.A. Nicolls' wifes (Anne Hall Muhlenburg and Rosa Muhlenburg) share the same grandfather - Rev. Henry E. Muhlenburg.

I hope this sets the record straight. I have alot more information - including family documents. Anyone that wants to discuss the Nicolls family tree please email me at GANicolls@aol.com

Nicolls Family

You probably know that there is a William Jasper Nicolls buried in Pottstown, PA. The lot once belonged to GA Nicolls who left it to William in his will. William Jasper Nicolls was an author, and I have several of his books - one of which is signed. William Jasper Nicolls published a book on the Nicolls family. He only printed 100 copies. I know where one is.
