We recently received info that we are descended from the Baron Johann Michael Von Nida. If anyone recognizes the name, please tell me more or just let me know your out there :) My grandparents were James Howard and Carrie Bell Nida if that helps any.

I received no information from my last notice so I'll try again: I wonder if any one can trace their ancestors back to Hocheim in Germany. I know there are quite a few with this surname in U.S.A. but we are very few in U.K. - and all closely related - in fact only two males survive with the surname. We're a dying breed and desperately want to find our roots.

Looking for parents and siblings for Almeda Nida, born about 1840 in VA (possibly Giles Co.). She married Thomas Martin Hammack around 1856, possibly in IA. Thomas and Almeda are listed on the 1860 census in Benton twp., Wayne Co. IA. By 1870 they are in Yamhill Co. OR, and by 1880 appear in Union Co. OR.

Two of Thomas and Almeda's daughters married brothers of my great grandmother.

Glad your mother has enjoyed my book. I have had many favorable comments and will continue compiling family info for as long as I can. Since only 20,000 names printed in the book, I have another 15,000 that connect to our family in my data base. They were too far from the tree trunk to print by FTM. Let me know if I can help you in any way. BTW, I recently received a pic of the children of John Calvin Nida including Girley. Also have one of Flossie at age 4.

Yes, Flossie's my aunt. This question's been answered. Apparently, Flossie's sister, Girly, was born without a thyroid and died sometime in her thirties as a result of the lack of availability of medicine. My daughter was also born without a thyroid and, so far, is the only one in our family tree with this condition. Isn't genealogical research interesting?

By the way, Jack, I sent you some pictures from our Nida family line and you put them in your most recent book (which I bought for my mother in Colorado). She loves it and I recommend that everyone in our great big Nida family order one from you. Thanks. - Julie Negron

You may want to contact Girley's only living sibling, Flossie Mae (Nida) Clardy in Springdale, AR. Girley Josephine Nida lived bo be 35 years old before her death. Information on Girley may be found on page 480 in my book, The Family von Nida.

Need Medical History: John C. & Sara Nida

John and Sarah had a daughter called Girly. She was retarded with a somewhat stunted growth. She only lived to be about 20. If you will look at any pictures you have of her you will see that her body grew disproportionately to her skeletal structure. I'm told nobody ever knew what was wrong with Girly but they didn't think she was a Down Syndrome baby.

I believe she very possibly could have been a-thyrotic, meaning no thyroid gland, as opposed to hypo/hyper-thyrotic, meaning too little/too much. Undiagnosed thyroid deficiencies at birth cause Cretinism which presents itself as retardation with stunted growth (and much more technical stuff).

I'm trying to find out if Girly's affliction was genetic and am looking for information on any of John Calvin & Sarah Nida's descendants who have/had any congenital glandular disorders. Also, any pictures of Girly would be appreciated. I have one but it's very old. I'll scan it in for anyone interested.

John Sarah(sp?) Nida, b.1865? b.1872?, children: Winnie Lee, Clyde, Claude, Girly, Flossie, John. All born circa 1899 - 1914, located anywhere between Afton, OK, and Alma, AR, up to 1924+. John Nida, Sr. owned a blacksmiths shop in Afton, OK, circa 1920 +/-. Any information, please. We're just starting this side of the family. Will make the trip out soon. Thanks so much.
