Nielsen or Nelson -- Denmark-Illinois-Iowa-Minnesota

Jacob Matt Nielsen, born in Fovling, Jutland, Denmark 1835 settled in the Dwight, Livingston Illinois area and then moved to Kossuth county Iowa. When his children entered school his children were told that in this country, their last name was spelled "Nelson" and the family has been Nelson ever since.

We have a photo of six people labeled "Nelson/Nielsen cousins of Jackson, MN". The six are 3 women, 2 men and a boy. By their ages they could be 3 sisters, 2 brothers and a son. Or siblings and spouses with a son.

When the eldest relatives were asked about the photo in 1979 they recollected that these were siblings or a sibling of our Jacob Matt Nielsen.

Jacob's parents were Niels Jacobsen (born abt. 1813 Denmark) and Karen Madsdatter (born 1810 Denmark).

The known offspring of Niels and Karen are:
Jacob Matt Nielsen (my ancestor) settled in Illinois then Iowa)
Magdalene Nielsen
Applone Nielsen
Mads Nielsen (died as a child)
Kirstine Nielsen
Mads Herman Nielsen

I do not know which of these siblings came to the US and which stayed in Denmark.

Please respond if there is any link. Thank you.

Hans Ludvig Nielsen and Hansine Kristine Nielsen (Mortensen)

I am looking for any and all information on my great grandparents who came over from Denmark in 1904. Here's what I know:

Their names were Hans Ludvig Nielsen (born March 13, 1873/died in Nebraska - probably Plainview/Pierce County about 1963) and his first wife Hansine Kristine Nielsen -
maiden name Mortensen (born about 1871/died about 1921 in Plainview/Pierce County, NE). Both, I am told, are buried in a place called "Danish Cemetery" in Copenhagen, NE.

When they immigrated to America they brought their four children -

Jens Christian Robert Nielsen (born about 1895)

Rose Marie Nielsen (born about 1898)

Ludvig (Louie) Nielsen (born about 1900)

Johannes (John) Nielsen (born about 1902)

They had at least three more children, that I know of, who were born in Nebraska -

Esther Nielsen (born 11 Feb 1905-19 Nov 1966)

Lila Nielsen (born Oct 13 - no other info)

Freddy Nielsen (died as a child).

On their trip to America they were traveling in the company of a Karl Vilhelm Mortensen (born about 1878), who might be a relative of Hansine's - a brother?

Hans and Hansine owned a farm in Plainview, NE on RFD 1. Hansine died some time between 1918 and 1923. Hans remarried after her death. His second wife's name was Myrtle Eunice Barrett (maiden Crowshaw).

I would like to learn the names of Hans' and Hansine's parents, or anything that might help me get to this information. Please help.

Nielsen in Ohio and/or California

Am looking for information on any Nielsens or Petersens in the Lake Erie/Northern part of Ohio. Niels Nielsen married Engeline Petersen in 1874 in Sandusky, Erie or Ottowa co., Ohio and I'm trying to figure out why they came to Ohio (from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany). Anyway, they didn't stay long because they had my great-great-grandmother in 1875 in Mt. Eden, Alameda, California. I don't know who Niels or Engeline's parents are so maybe if I can find other Nielsens or Petersens in Alameda or Northern Ohio I can make a connection... Another thing, my mother distinctly remembers seeing a marriage record (in German or Danish) for Niels and Engeline from Schleswig-Holstein, if so, why would they need to remarry in Ohio? Then again, when they married in Ohio they were teenagers so it would seem unlikely that they had married before in Germany... Anyway, these people are such a mystery- I'd appreciate any help anyone might be able to give as to unraveling this quandary.

Grandfathers real place & date of birth

I have a copy of my late grandfather, William Hanson's death cert, 21 Jan,1970, Farnham hosp, Surrey. The informant was my late grandmother & she gave his place & DOB as 12 August 1901, Liverpool.
However the General Register Office has no birth record for him.
I half expected this as my father always said his father came to England from Denmark, to look for work. So I assume Liverpool was maybe the place he first came to & they always used that as his 'birthplace' for fear he might be deported for illegal entry?
How can I find his real place & date of birth? It was also said he changed his surname; maybe was Anderson, Andersenn or Hansen.
It also reads: "Taken on Jan 30, 1949, (I believe it's a "4"), on my 95(96-written over) birthday, Carrie Marie NIELSEN".

The photo is a black & white snap shot.

My goal is to locate family to send this original treasure to.
Laura Maria Nielsen Renquist, 1870-1931

My great grandmother was Laura Maria Nielsen, born 20 Jun 1870 (or 1869) in Vester Hassing, Kaer, Aalborg, Denmark; died 18 Jun 1931, Rosehill Township, Cottonwood, Minnesota. Her parents were Niels Christian Pedersen, 1839-?, and Dorthea Marie Larsen, 1841-1882. Her brothers were Peder Christian Nielsen, 1868-?; Jens Nielsen, 1874-?; Christian Nielsen, 1876-?. She came to America in 1889 or 1890; I believe she first lived in Albert Lea, Minnesota. She married my great grandfather, Oscar Wilhelm Karlsson Renquist, a Swedish immigrant, on 30 Apr 1893 in Westbrook, Cottonwood, Minnesota. Anyway, if anyone is connected to her parents or brothers, I'd like to hear from you.

Peder Christian Nielsen, 1868-?

I just found out that my great grandmother's brother, Peder Christian Nielsen, born 2 May 1868 in Horsens, Kaer, Aalborg, Denmark (don't ask me what the parish or county is; it took me forever to figure the Swedish ones out!) Anyway, they both came to America in the late 1880's. GGm Laura Nielsen went to Albert Lea, Minnesota. I'm guessing that Peder (or maybe Peter now) went to either Minnesota or Iowa. If anyone on this message board is descended from him, I'd like to hear from you.

requesting information on Niels Olaf Nielsen

Olaf was the brother of Christian, Fred & Henry Nielsen. He had one sister named Anna. His first name was Niels but he rarely used it. Olaf was living in New Jersey in 1918 but we can not find him in any census records since. He was born Sept, 1884, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and traveled back & forth from U.S. to Denmark several times. We know he was in the U.S. in 1943 because he was named in his cousin's will. We do not know if Olaf ever married. If he married, there would be grandchildren or great grandchildren living today. Would grealy appreciate hearing from anyone who is related to or knows of Niels Olaf Nielsen.

thank you
Tonia Nielsen

My biological grandmother was born in Minnesota in 1897 and died in Petaluma, CA, in 1940. Without having to trek all the way over to Santa Rosa to go through records, I was hoping someone might be able to help me learn the cause of death and where she is buried (one source says she is buried in the Old Danish Cemetary in Callendar, Webster Co., IA, along with her sister, Dora, and Dora's husband, the Rev. Hans P.K. Hansen, with whom Ingeborg had a little fling that produced my mother. Pretty scandalous stuff in those days; today it would just get you invited onto Oprah or Jerry Springer. Anyway, any information you might be able to provide would be appreciated.

I am looking for any and all information on my father, Niels Christian Nielsen, born in 1903 at Hellebak, Denmark. His father was August Peter Nielsen, his mother Marie Jensen. I know that he had at least 2 brothers: Torben and Emile ( spelling may be wrong)
Niels emmigrated to Canada sometime in the 1930's. He had married in Denmark, but I am not sure when his wife and daughter came to Canada, nor do I know his wife's name. He remarried in 1951 to Carla Lorensen, born in 1929 at Visby, Denmark, but living in Copenhagen prior to going to Canada in 1951 to get married. Help please! We have lost all touch with our relatives in Denmark!

Elmer was born in Denmark in the year of 1918 and he somehow ended up in Western Samoa. There he married a woman, but I do not have her name. They had approx. 9 children. There is only 2 out of the 9 children still alive. They currently live in America at the moment. My grandfather was 1 of their children. He died approx. in the year of 1963 or around there. Your help will be very useful to me and my family. Thanks.

Magnolia

Her parents were William G. Schimmel and Ida Louise Mary Fiskey (her complete name is still being searched.

I have posted on this subject before, but I now have new information.

I am looking for information on my Grandfather and his parents and siblings. He was raised in Denmark and immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Canada in the late 1920s to mid 1930s. I know
very little about his family other than he left Denmark alone in his late teens or early twenties.

Here are some facts to help narrow it down, I hope...
- Worked in family's steel foundary and was a left handed
molder.??
- He invented a furnace and named it for his friend. (new info)
- Highly schooled in Austria and Europe, was trained to be a
doctor.
- Mother always had a pet white german sheppard. I have a
picture of her with one of the dogs.
- Had younger brothers who were twins named Walter and Richard.
(new info.)
- Family lived in Silkeborg, Denmark (new info).
- My grandfather died in 1967 on fathers day and his father died
withing 24 hours of recieiving the news.
- He went by the name Henry but was actually named Rudolf
V...
Nellie Schultz (b 1856 in Philadelphia PA d 1935 Kane County Illinois) - widow (I think) of William Schultz married John Evans sometime after 1886 but before 1910.

Nellie was married to Wm Schultz in PA and had a son, Wm Schultz (b 1886). I have no information on what happened to the senior Wm Schultz.

At sometime she married John Evans and moved either to Montana or Iowa and lived on a farm.

Family oral history also has her working in vaudeville at some point during this time period.

She is listed as a widow in the 1910 Illinois Census.

Has anyone run into this elusive lady? She was very short and quite attractive from photos!

Pattie Pahlke Schultz

Henry Nelson (Nielsen) Denmark to Wilmington, Illiois 1880.

My gg grandfather, Henry Nelson, came from Denmark to Wilmington, Illinois. I have found his marriage info in the Illinois archives spelling his name as Nielsen. I was told that his last name was probably not Nelson originally. He was born in 1863. He married Elizabeth Kallis, spelled Kallas on marriage cert., April 21 1890. Henry came to the US in 1880 with his brother. His brother is said to be 2 years older than Henry. One story is the brothers got seperated in New York. The other is they came to Illinois together and had a fight with brother moving out west. Henry drove a delivery wagon in Wilmington. I am hoping to find on info on Henry or who his brother might have been. I do not know the name of the hometown or his parents name.

Marie and Henry Nielsen and foster son/nephew Orla Krause, Lynbrook, Nassau, NY

I am hoping to get info about Marie and Henry Nielsen, both from Denmark, who were living at Vincent Avenue, District 58, Lynbrook, Nassau, NY, according to the 1930 census. Henry and Marie Nielsen were 57 and 59 years old, respectively, according to the census. Henry, who is registered as an accountant working in an office, immigrated to the USA in 1899, and Marie immigrated in 1896. In addition, the 1930 census record states the age at first marriage of the spouses; Henry is registered to have first married at 36, whereas Marie is registered as having married at 25, so she must have been married before she married Henry. They had a foster son of 9, whose name was Orla Krause, who was also born in Denmark, and who is registered as their nephew in the census. Orla was killed in WWII in Manila, the Philipines, at the age of 23. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Thank you. Lisbet Pals Svendsen

Immigration Information Needed

I am looking for immigration information on my 2nd great grandfather, approximate birth year of 1844. The 1880 US census shows his name as Erastmus Nelson, 36 years old, in Hinton, Mecosta county, Michigan. His wife, Katrina, was 35. I have learned that Nelson is probably an americanized spelling of Nielsen, however it may have been spelled Nielson or Niellsen. To make this search more challenging, his first name may actually be spelled Rastmus, Rasmus, or Rastus. A distant relative of mine remembered him being called uncle "Rastus". There is also a family rumor that the first born child of Erastmus and Katrina, Alfred, was born on the boat that they came to the US on, however I have found information that shows he was born in Michigan in August, 1873. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Bob

NOT a family line I am researching, clearing out old letters and ran across this one from June, 1987 from: Ben L. Nelson, Bonita Springs, FL. re: his Nielsen family.

His grandfather:
Soren Marius Nielsen, born Jan 23, 1857, he came to the USA in 1881 and married Margaret Jensen. She came to the USA in 1882.

Both came from Jylland, near Randers. They settled in North Dakota and the children were all born there. They then moved to Clarkson, Washington in 1900, and lived there until their death.

Ben had naturalization papers, and the 1900 census showing where the children were born.
===
That is all the info in the letter. Thought someone may be able to use the info, I don't have anything else on this family.

CJ

I am loking for anyone who has ANY info on my great grandfather Niels. He was born in Denmark, supposedly the oldest of a very large family( at least 12 kids). He came to the US in 1893 and refused any contact with his past. He eventually ended up in Central Wisconsin as a grounds keeper on a hunting /fishing resort believed to be owned by a family named Talbott or Cabott wher he live the last 10-15 years of his life till he died of mouth and throat
cancer. I would appreciate a response from any relation to his family or the family that owned the resort.

Nielsen photo in Denmark?

I just recently came into possession of a photo taken, I believe, in Denmark. The photographer's name is V. Hoffner and the street name is Sondergade which is located in the coastal city of Fredrikshavn (sp?) on the NE tip of the penninsula. The only Family connection in Denmark is Nielsen. Nicolaus Nielsen who came to America, first to Salinas CA, and then received his citizenship papers in Tillamook OR in May 1894
According to another document copy I have, in Danish, I believe he was born in 1860. The document is titled: Extraordinaert Hjemstedsbevis and since I can't read Danish I have no idea what else it says other than having his name Nicolai Mathiesen Nielsen of Visby Toqu. I will show the picture to anyone interested if they'll email me at mmpayne4@juno.com There are 4 women and 1 elderly gentleman standing in front of a lovely one-story brick house, two of the women in traditional headdress and one in a lace-trimmed white apron. I sure like to know if anyone recognises either the costumes or the people. Thank you so much.

looking for ancestors

I'm trying to find any information about my greatgrandparents.
I believe their names were Karen and Christen Edvard Nielsen from Helsignor, Denmark. It's possible that Karen died in 1924 or 1926 and Christen Edvard passed away February 27, 1947. I've tried my hand at searching Danish records but I'm really not very good at this, so I haven't had any luck. I do know that they had at least two sons by the names of Frederick or Frederik and Peter or Peder and at least two daughters by the names of Anna ( husband Otto Rasmussen) and Inger. There may have been another sister as well, but I do not know her name. Family history says that one of the sisters who was married and ran or owned a hotel in Belgium with her husband was killed in a concentration camp during the war becaues she helped the resistance, but I don't have any other information besides that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Looking for info on maternal grandfather from Denmark. Rudolf Valdemar Nielsen, went by Henry in after immigrated to Canada before WWII.

Hello,

I am looking for information on my Grandfather and his parents and siblings. He was born and raised in Denmark and immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Canada in the late 1920s to mid 1930s. I know
very little about his family other than he left Denmark alone in his late teens or early twenties.

Here are some facts to help narrow it down, I hope...
- Worked in family's steel foundary and was a left handed
molder.??
- Highly schooled in Austria and Europe, was trained to be a
doctor.
- Mother always had a pet white german sheppard. I have a
picture of her with one of the dogs.
- My grandfather died in 1967 on fathers day and his father died
withing 24 hours of recieiving the news.
- He went by the name Henry but was actually named Rudolf
V... Nielsen or V... Rudolf Nielsen.
- He was married to Winnifred Cox, who past away in October
of 1990 in Ontario, Canada.

Anyone who can point me in the right direction would earn my eternal appreciation. I have searched repeatedly on www.ancestory.com and other sites without any success.

Thanks in advance,
Shane Echo
Helena, MT U.S.A.
