Re: Olivia Nielson

I appreciate the help you've given, but if I had more information about Olivia believe me I would try to make use of it. Thompson was her married name, not her maiden name. Also, I am currently unemployed, so can't afford to pay to use Ancestry's US or European databases, so until I find a job and have some income, I guess I'm out of luck trying to track anything about my great grandmother down. I think there is one child of hers still surviving he would be my great uncle), but I'm not certain. Our family is not religious, so we do not have family bibles to fall back on. I've been working on my tree, off and on, for almost 20 years now, so I know patience is a big part of the research. My hopes in tracking down Olivia's children and thier children (my cousins) is that maybe one of them will have better information than I have.

Thanks again for your help and the links you provided. I know I will use them someday.

Then the earlier link given to the 1900 Norwegian census for Olivia is probably her in Lillesand, Aust-Agder, Norway.

The census lists her birthplace as Barbu - another parish which was in Arendal district in Aust-Agder.

Research in those areas and you should learn about Olivia, her parents, etc. Study in those links I gave above to learn how.

Thompson is rarely a name that was actually used in Norway - it often was used by an emigrant who had a more difficult name in the original Norwegian that just didn't "travel well" and one that usually started with the letter T.
I tried to point out that without the basic information such a birthyear and perhaps immigration year to the US you just aren't going to be able to get help.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wgnorway/good-queries.htm

It isn't information about the American born children that is going to point the way.

The few records I have for Olivia, mostly census and family oral history, says she was born about 1877 in Lillisand, Norway and immigrated to America in 1900 or 1901. She would have been 23-24 at the time and single/unmarried. Family legend has it she met Thomas Thompson soon after arriving in New York, they married and thier first son Petri was born in 1904, to be followed by another child every 2-3 years until Olivia was 40, a total of 11 known children that survived to adulthood, with a few questionable children that may have been named (late pregnancy) miscarriages, stillbirths, or died in infancy children. They lived in New York City for many years, but her last children were born in Texas. I have fairly decent information on the children that lived to adulthood, as one was my grandma and she just died 2 years ago at the age of 92. Her memory was sharp when I interviewed her in 1995 and that is the info I have entered into my tree.

Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thompson is a very common name and finding definite matches are hard to come by. I have saved this line of my tree for last because of this. I have other lines of my tree going back hundreds of years, but can't take the Thompson/Nielson thred back past 1900.

Lora Gunning, a Thompson/Nielson by way of my grandma

She was born when?

The 1900 Norwegian census shows a young single woman living in Lillesand, Aust-Agder, Norway with her widowed mother and one brother?. She does not appear to be using the typical Norwegian patronymic naming pattern.

http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&...

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/articles.html
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/DigitalArchives.htm...
http://www.rhd.uit.no/art/michael02.html
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wgnorway/good-queries.htm

I am looking for more information about my great grandmother, Olivia Nielson. She immigrated to America from Lillisand, Norway in 1901 and married Thomas Thompson, who was born in Bergen, Norway and immigrated to America in 1883. They had 13 children, of which my grandmother was one. I have found records of them living in NYC with thier children in the 1920 census, and have found them again in the 1930 census living in Texas. Any information about Olivia, her husband, or thier parents/siblings would be appreciated. I have extensive tree information about thier descendant, just little about them, themselves.
The first wife of Horatio NEILSON, Eliza Ann BURNE was born 27 October 1797, christened 17 December 1797 at St Michael Cornhill, London.

She was the sister of my gg-grandfather Rev Henry Thomas BURNE.

There is a shipping record which shows that one of Henry Thomas BURNE's sons Jasper arrived on the Formosa in 1852. Another arrival on that ship was H Neilson:

NEILSON H Mr Formosa	P	22/10/1852	Southampton, Melbourne	1279	Fr Eng in SMH

Jasper was probably an officer of that ship and the H Neilson could have been Horatio or one of his children, I have not researched this any further.

Other BURNE researchers have much more information on the link between the family and the Neilson family of Tormarton.

Michael Lightfoot
Canberra, Australia

I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetary in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

No, I have not. My great aunt, Bridget Roach Higgins was a member of this family. The only reason I found the name Nielson was because I caught the caretaker of the cemetery at a good time. His last name was Bradley and he was most helpful. I've made several trips to Madison and I'm not trying to do anything but add to my family tree. I do have other info that I could share with whoever wants it. I'd appreciate anything you can give me. Thanks for the reply, Patty
P.S. I do know that Bridget married Patrick Higgins and that his brother Bernard married into the Nielson/McDonald family. Bernard died during renovations made to the state capitol in Madison.
Are you a relative, Patty?

Peter

Thanks a lot for this. This Captain John Neilson is, I suspect, the right person. Since I posted my message, I have found information that leads me to believe the information is reliable. It indicated that my ancestor, Elizabeth Hall, was brought up by Captain Neilson, who "treated her kindly and gave her an education". Not quite sure what that means, but suspect that Elizabeth may have been a servant in his household, unless there was some other connection - her family were quite poor farming folk from eastern Somerset (near Bath).

I'm not sure I can categorically provide a link to Horatio Neilson, but I do note that Elizabeth Hall had a brother called Horatio Nelson Hall. He was born well after the hullabaloo of Trafalgar was over, so perhaps they really meant to christen him Horatio Neilson Hall ? Did the Halls know the local Neilsons, who arranged for Elizabeth to go to Bristol.

Finally, from some work we did with Bristol Directories, Captain Neilson seemed to cease appearing in the 1790's, with his wife appearing after that. Not sure at this stage what this means, especially if Elizabeth Hall (born 1806) was brought up in his household ?

Will post again if I find anything more, although this is unlikely - I was chasing Neilson becasue of the family story, not because he is family.

Rgds - Peter

A Captain John Neilson commanded the ship Hanover Planter out of Bristol in the 1780's. An image of the 1786 muster roll is at:
http://www.discoveringbristol.org.uk/showImageDetails.php?im...
This also shows a James Neilson on board. Both are shown with 'abode' Bristol.
The ship mainly travelled to the W.Indies probably as part of the slave trade, but bringing back tobacco etc.
My step-father (who's surname I have) owned a painting of the ship, currently passed down to my son also John Neilson.
I have been trying to connect the 1780 John to the family and currently am missing a link to a Rev Horatio Neilson of Tormarton Glos and North Witham Lincs., born ca 1801

Google also turned up a quote from a document on the Bristol slave trade:
In January 1792 Captain John Neilson of the Recovery noted that he had noted that he had bought only two slaves in eight days at Cape Mount on the Grain Coast, 'there having been so many Americans & giving such prices that it is out of my power to do anything'.
Access to the full document ois denied.

If you get any new info, let me know.

Peter Neilson, Glos., UK

Looking for infor on Marie Nielson

I'm looking for any information leading to my great-great-grandmother Marie Nielson. She came over from Denmark between 1889-1899. Some of her children are as follows: Carrie, Tina, Mary, Lena, Otto August, and Martin Kristian. Martin Kristian Nielson is my great grand father. The story goes that Martin didn't know who his father was.
Otto, whom change his name to Nelson after marrying his step sister Lillian Sorenson. Apparently, Marie married either Jens or Nels Sorenson in North Dakota. Now Otto's son did research before dying and claims that Marie's husband in Denmark ... a Mr. Nielson was a felon, whom committed murder and couldn't come over to America. While Martin always claim ed a friend named Mr. Nielson helped Marie over to America which is why we were Nielson's. I believe she was born in Denmark around 1850, and the only thing I have on her death is a letter from her daughter Carrie in Wyoming stating that she died on Feb 20, but no year is present on letter. This would be a big link to my past. I would appreciate any help at all. My tree is public. Thank you much.

I am looking for information on the Nielson family that moved to the Syracuse, NY area from Denmark sometime around 1900. Earl's father (name unknown) changed the name to Nelson. Earl had at least one son by the name of Richard, born about 1940. Richard's daughter, now Julie Stanley, lives in the Hanover, PA area.
I am trying to help Julie find information about her ancestors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bob Benjamin <rbenjamin@qis.net>

I have a beautiful childhood photo of Hazel Nielson (married Sidney Walls in California). I will furnish free copies of this photo taken in Healdsburg, CA to interested descendants or relatives. Hazel was born about 1895 and I believe her father was Niels Nielson (or Neilson) who was born in Denmark and lived in Healdsburg, CA. Brothers and sisters of Hazel were Dora, George, Grace, Norman, and Hellen. Hazel and Sidney Walls had at least one child, Harold Walls.
