Marriage License: Alfred. E. Niemi--December, 24th, 1936 (Hopkins)
Reply to: sale-ayvsx-1266459101@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]
Date: 2009-07-12, 4:28PM CDT

If you know this family, tell them that I want to give them their marriage license and certificate back. I found it in a bunch of old letters and stuff. They can have the other stuff too. I'm not really interested in doing a detailed search for Alfred and Dorothy's family...so if you know them, or are somehow connected with them, please get back to me. It would be too weird to just toss somebody's marriage license, right? So, I have it and I want them to have it back...short and simple. Somebody should call me: Tim--952-212-3089
I lived with my mom up on Niemi above my grandmothers house.
Hi Peter!

I am your distant cousin from Finland :-). If I read your email here correctly, you must be Randy Niemi's son. Am I right?? I was in US in 1986 and spent time with your family too :-). Mostly I stayed with Tina & Wayne Hamm, plus some time with grandma Anna Niemi.

Wow, what a small world :-). I never imagined I'd be in contact with you Peter :-). You were just a little boy at the time :-)

Regards,
Tuija Suhonen
Your distant cousin
Kuopio, Finland
tuipe6510@gmail.com

Hi!

I don't know if you still are looking for information about your family, but if you are I am the 'missing link' you've been looking for :-).

I am your distant relative and I live in Finland. I have visited USA many times, my first visit in 1986 was to see Anna Niemi (Ylönen) and the Niemi family in Castle Rock and Kelso, Washington. I also met Edith and Impi. I mostly stayed with Tina & Wayne Hamm. Tina is Anna's granddaughter. I heard Anna passed away few years ago :-(.

Well, if you see this e-mail, please contact me. My email is: tuipe6510@gmail.com. Oh, my name, it's Tuija Suhonen and I live in Kuopio, Finland :-)

Just a quick update to an old post.
I realize now that chasing ''Niemi'' was wrong, for me.
I understand now, by being able to search census' and other records, my Grandfather Matt E Niemi (as I thought) was Niemisto.

Niemi didn't become a family name until my Father went into the Military in about 1943, and had to have my Grandmother swear that he was born, in Duluth..and they put Niemi down as sir name.

They called themselves Niemi, but really it was Niemisto.
I never did find those cousins that Matti Niemisto immigrated with to Sparta MN near Eveleth, to work in the mines.

(Americanization had me believing he was Matthew E Niemi---Matti sounds much like Matt E. ... and then the shortened last name...the death certificate proves the last name Niemisto).

Posted for anyone who might be interested in the ''name'' issues.
P

Michigan Niemi Henry, Sinfrid, Julius ++++

I am going to attempt this again since my thread below is a little outdated.

My step-grandmother was Eva Niemi who died in 2007. Parents: Lydia and Julius. I was told that Lydia may be a step-mother to her. Siblings included Ethel (I think she is in California now).

"Uncle Jalmer" could've been a Henry as records I have seen show a HENRY that died in 1989 and I know that I have met him so it had to have been Henry. I am thinking maybe HENRY was an uncle to Eva as she had no brothers that I have seen via census records.

I cannot find any passenger records for ANYONE. I am hitting a complete block here. My next step is headed to the Library of Michigan to pull obituaries from the Grand Rapids Press (good thing it is 10 minutes away) to see if there are any relatives listed, etc...but I don't anticipate any luck as everything here is so dead-end. In fact, I can find NADA on JULIUS. I've even tried the Finnish equiv. of JULIU.

I know names get shortened and I've tried KIVINIEMI since a census suggested something that started with a K, but again....roadblock.

Tons of Niemis in Michigan (up north)...there has to be a connection as I believe HENRY was born up there.

Any help AT ALL would be greatly GREATLY appreciated. I am trying to put stuff together as a Christmas gift and it this idea may flop!

Any idea how to get actual records on name changes and/or anything out of Finland?? I have no info on WHERE in Finland so that may be where I am hurting.

Thanks in advance!

Carrie
retrowfmk at yahoo dot com

looking for Phyllis Carson Nemi

Hello! I am searching for Phyllis Carson Nemi. Phyllis was a student nurse at the Central Maine General Hospital about 1966. She did a rotation at Crotched Mountain Rehab Center, Greenfield, NH while I was a resident there. She would remember me as Terry Buteau. I remember Phyllis fondly and would love to hear from her. She married William "Bill" Nemi about 1968 and sent me a card while she was living in Southbridge, MA then. I am having a half-birthday party next year and would love to share my day with Phyllis. If anyone knows anything of her, would they please contact me at tabwheels49 at the place where the cowboys yell if you get my drift.
Thanks!
Theresa

My grandfather was Arvo (archie) Niemi, all my father really knows is that his grandparents came over to Ellis island before 1912, because my grandfather was born in 1912, in Minnesota. My father has a half brother from the same father named Dale Thomas Niemi, we believe the original name was Nieminen, and shortened to Niemi after moving to the US. His father traveled on the west coast, and from what we know had a few more children, and died in Washington. His body was sent back to where we live (NY) and buried here.

I'm just trying to find out the names of my great grandparents, and maybe get some more knowledge of my father's side of the family..

I have pictures of him, but thats really all I know of him, I don't even have a middle name :/

Julius/Lydia/Kent County/Grand Rapids NIEMI.....

OK..there HAS to be some connection somewhere with all of these MI Niemis...I just want to put it together somehow. I have very VERY little information on this stuff. My step-grandmother was Eva Niemi who died just this past February. She married a John Byle and then a John Beck (died 2003).

Eva is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Kent County, MI (Grand Rapids, Walker) and I was told her "relatives" are there, as well, though not on the same lot.

When doing a look at records for this cemetery, I came across a Julius and a Lydia Niemi.

I know that Eva had a brother, Jalmer (spelling?)...but that is really all I know.

But there has to be connections somewhere with others that are listed here. That name isn't like a SMITH or something!

PLEASE HELP!

retrowfmk@yahoo.com
Dear Charlie,

I have no information for you. But, my Grandfather came to Eveleth possibly just about 1914 or so....Matt E. Niemi. He was born in Finland in 1892, and died in a Hospital in Fergus Falls in 1927, from injuries sustained in 1921 in a mining accident, in Eveleth.

I was told he came with his COUSINS....all about the same age..(interesting your Grandfather's age) ..He was Niemi....one cousin I have heard was an Emil Niemisto, who then lived in Virginia, Mn.

I have just recently received his Death Certificate from Minnesota, and it shows his Father in Finland to be a Henry Mieinisto....[..that imho is a typgraphical error or a poor interpretation of Niemisto]....his Mother was listed as Lizzie Moelme [ a name that NEVER comes up in a Finish Website search].....also a possible poor interpretation of old handwritten Hospital Admission records.

I'll keep you in mind if I find anymore...Im poking around all the time......

Matt E. Niemi married my grandmother Anna Elizabeth Ikola from Cherry Minn .....before 1916.....had two kids...Walter Henry Niemi (my dad, born at Forbes, graduated Mt.Iron)...and Helen Evelyn Niemi Baratta .......they lived in Eveleth when Matt Niemi was injured in the mining accident.

All the Luck in the World Charlie.....in your Niemi search...if I find anything that pertains to your family, will let you know.

Priscilla Niemi Land

Yikes! I'm nearly a year late in responding!!
My great-grandparents Toivo and Hilda (Gylden) Niemi emigrated from Varrat, Vaasa, Finland in 1886. They resided in the Houghton/Hancock area at least in to the 1920s. Their 'original' surname was Hirviniemi. To my knowledge they had no children named Toivo (or Tom).
I do not have a lot of info on the Niemi's and am always looking for contacts.

I think this plot is in Eveleth Minnesota, St. Louis County.

I cannot get any links to my Grandfather Matt E. Niemi, who came to America before 1916, and died in the Nopeming Sanitorium, Otter Tail Co. Minnesota.... in 1927, from 6 years of suffering the injuries of a mine cave in.

There are apparently no links....I am sending for his death certificate after the holiday...and hopefully a marriage certificate......

Why I know so little of this man...I dont know....but, now there is no one to ask......very sad.

I know that one of my Grandfather's cousins....in Virginia Minn, St. Louis County, I believe...was an Emil Niemisto.....my Grandfather is listed on his death certificate as Niemi....so, some had changed the name.....but, there obviously were first cousins with both names.....I just cant find them ..

I hope this gives you some where else to look Beth, I just see the similarity in a name....I know nothing more....if ever I do ... I will post it....

Have you tried this website?... for shipping manifests?.... http://www.ellisislandrecords.org

Please see the attachment here....just click and see picture of grave stone.

Priscilla Land

I read your post from 2002. I am looking for a Niemi connection to my Kataisto Katajisto line. My grandfather was Isaac Katajisto shortened to Isto. I noticed in your post that you said you knew some people named. Can I ask where you knew them from? My grandmother and grandfather went by the name of Hanna and Isaac Isto. As far as I know they lived in Wisconsin and Michigan. When my grandfather came through Canada from Finland he is going to his cousin Carl Victor Niemi in Newberry Michigan. Do you think there's any connection? My e-mail address is schertzl@EarthLink.net
