Pam,
The only info that I have is the ships log (Germans to America) that stated they were from Lower Prussia. Not quite certain how much area that covers. They arrived at New York in June 1867 aboard the ship New York. Since they show up in the 1870 Census in Dayton, Ohio, they appear to have made it there quickly and may have had that as their destination. We are unable to tie my Great Great Grandmother Christina Niess to a husband but have some speculation his name was Phillip and that she may have been a widow since she remained the HOH until her death in Dayton. My line is from the son Whilhelm. Theodore's line eventually made it to Michigan. I have lost the thread on the others.
Terry

Thanks Terry, I totally understand that; some of our family names with the ü came out differently on the US end too for the same reason. But I guess the question still is, which name spellings do I follow as the family I want to trace?? What about the e at the end? So this sounds like it could still be any of the combinations, Nies, Niess, Niesse, Niese, would that be correct? The name seems common enough, and the US locations of all the combinations are spread out enough that it's hard to know what lines to chase after, because they seem to be spelled differently all over the place, I don't see much consistency. What part of Germany did you family come from??

I so appreciate you taking the time to reply; I guess only time will tell which are the right ones.

Sincerely, Pam in CA

In German there is a funny little character that represents a double 's' thus the spelling as NIESS. When they arrrived in the US that character did not exist and was shortened to NIES. My Great Grand Mother's name was listed on the ships manifest with the funny character but when they settled in Dayton Ohio the name was NIES in the Census and has been ever since. Hope this helps.
Terry Nies

Hello,

I'm interested in 2 things; the patterns of the spelling of this name, if there is any, the spellings seem to vary all over the place, maybe someone knows roughly which lines go to which areas??

Secondly, I'm looking for connections re family of Karl August Niess/Neise, someone in his family married a Louise Streese in/near Brandenburg, Germany, there are children Otto and Erich and Vera that were born in Stettin, Germany early 1900's, that came to US but don't seem to find any evidence of Karl in US so far. . .

Any leads for info would be great!!

Thanks, Pam in CA

Jeanie,

My Great Gradfather was Nies Nies, a brother to Jan Nies. Their father was Derk Jan Nies. I now live in southern Indiana but am originally from Grand Rapids, MI. I remember going to the Nies farm for reunions when I was young. Nies Nies had 19 children by two wives. Five by the first and the rest by the second.

I would love to find a site on the internet that covers Gronigan and be able to pick up the birthdates and other information in the Netherlands. I have found that in Zeeland Province for the Brant side of our family but not for the Nies side yet. I have a geneolgy that goes way back that I found on the internet. I think it was done by my great-aunt and then given to one from our generation. I never received the original but have what is on the internet now. I know they had a picture of some of the family back when we were in Lansing but I never got a copy.

I would love to hear from you and see what you have found out about the family.

Carol Brandt Yonkers

JuLee,
I'm doing a family history for some close friends - so this is not my line - but they are linked to yours! Would you like a GEDCOM file?
Respond direct to me at my e-mail.
Here's the "short-line" answer to your question.
Johannes Niess 1800-1859 married Barbara C. Lang 1820-1901; son Friedrich Niess, 1859-1925, married Eilizabetha Klein 1861-1933 (15 children!); son Fredrich Niess 1887-1966, married Eva Rau, died 1958.(I'm looking for more on her line too) Friedrich's sister was Katharine Niess 1886-1975, married Jacob A. Schmierer 1877-1959 (7 children); son Theodore H. Schmierer 1907-1986, married Elsie Rosina Peter(s) 1910-2000 (2 children), their daughter is mother to my friend... and all of them are centered on Lodi CA.
Most of my information was gleened from the Germans from Russia web site -- and they are linked to my own wife and another local family I helped.

I am looking for information on my GGAunt Eva (Rau) Nies and her family. She and her husband had an orchard in Lodi during 1945. I don't know his name. From the Social Security Death Index, I suspect it may have been Jacob. She was born about 1887 and came to the US in 1911 through Ellis Island, meeting an uncle who lived in Ashley, ND. Her husband's family may have originally been from ND. I don't know if they had children.

Thank you.

Katherina Elisabetha NIES born Bobenhausen near Nidda.

Hello NIES family researchers, checking through all
postings on this Board, I was unable to detect the
original places of your German ancestors. Seems to me,
judging by my own research, that they did not come from
one single place, but in general from the area of Hessen,
situated in or near the Vogelsberg region.

Katherina Elisabetha NIES was born on 21.Sep.1809
in Bobenhausen bei Ortenberg im Vogelsberg/Hessen,
her father was ELIAS NIES, place and date of birth has
not been found as yet. Her mother was Anna Dorothea
WESTERWAELLER, probably also from Bobenhausen.
Katherina Elisabetha Nies married on 2.Apr.1843 in
Bobenhausen den Johann Konrad FILGES, born
22.July 1815 in Bobenhausen.

meinen besten Dank. This is to encourage German
family researchers to bring forward der Information in
respect to the NIES and related names, and I welcome
any such help.
John Merz, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
MERZ, MATZ, FILGES, BOOS, WEIDER, WENTZEL,
WESTERWAELLER, NIES.

He also had a son, Preston Turbiville, if my memory is correct. There is a Charles P. I have also found a Charles P. born in the same area in 1889. My Dad was born there in 1888.

I would love to share more info.

Hi Andrea,
I am one of the Camp Crook. SD Turbivilles. You mention of William Preston stirred many memories. He was my Great Uncle Bill. His wife was Aunt Daisey who could hit a spittoon from 10 feet away. My Dad and I visited them many times in Camp Crook where we went often because my mothers, mother also lived there.

Verla was married to Harvey Gaines.
I am still here! Thanks for responding. Yes, the name is Eloise not Louise! Sorry about that. I did find someone last year on Bertha's Pockert side of the family who contacted me. I sent all the photos to her and she made copies for her files. She said Eloise lived in Lodi and Pearl and Thelma lived in Idaho. She was going to try to get in touch with the family and give them the original photos. Her name is Yvonne Mcarty, but I can't remember where she lived. It was in the area of Lodi, maybe 40 or so miles out. Her e-mail is ymcarty@inreach.com in case you want to contact her.
