I am looking for clarification as to whether of not Jennie Mae Nightengale nee Johnson born February 1889 ( Caney, Kansas ) and died October 1952 ( Pawhuska, Oklahoma ) is the sister of Edith Addie Tayrien nee Johnson born December 1885 ( Bartlesville, Oklahoma ) and died December 1956 ( Pawhuska, Oklahoma ) ...

Also, believe that there are two other siblings maybe more ... Eunice Johnson born October 1893 in
Kansas ( married ? ? ? ) and Richard Johnson born May 1897 in Kansas ( 1930 US Federal Census indicates that he was divorced with a daughter Helen - 8 years old at the time - living in McPherson, Kansas )

Im trying to locate any African American Nightingales in VA. My grandmom was a Nightengale but married a Allen. Many lived in Rivanna, Scottsville, Howardsville towns. Some of the names are Malvina (Mulvina) Nightingale, Richard, Thorton, John, Charles. If anyone has any info please contact me about any Nightingales in your family. a Lawrence E. Nightengale is buried.
Died May 1906 son of F. & E.A.

I submitted a photo to Nebraskagravestones.org of his marker.

I've not found a marriage record for James and Frances Nightengale/Nightingale yet. The only record I've found so far that supports the existence of their marriage is their 1850 US census record in Mercer County KY, where they are listed as family #1068, page 360B, in the census taken on 11 Oct 1850. James is listed as being age 77, born in DE and the head of the household consisting of wife Frances (70 NC) and son Lewis (21 KY). Living next door is son Eli (family #1067) and nearby are sons Wilson (family #1055) and Thomas (family #1054) and daughter Margaret Dye (family #1046).

I've not found any other information about Frances, including anything that would confirm or deny the idea that she was of Indian heritage. Unless we can find an application filed with the Dawes Commission or other Indian compensation funds that factually demonstrates her heritage, I don't think we'll be able to confirm the family legend that she was in fact of Indian heritage.

I have been focusing my recent research on the Salmon families who lived in Sussex County DE in the mid-to-late 1700's. I've found some records for several different Salmon families who definitely appear to be related, but I've not yet been able to confirm the exact nature of their relationship with each other. James and his brother Joseph migrated from Sussex County DE to Surry County NC sometime before the 1800 US census of Surry County. As soon as I complete my searching there, I'm turning to the 1800-1810 period during which we know that James and Joseph both lived in Surry County NC. Perhaps I'll uncover some new information about Frances Nightengale there--if I do, I'll post it to this site.

Hope you get this post. I just found yours on the Nightengale board. I guess we are cousins since we are both 4th great grandchildren of James and Frances Salmon.

I have been trying to find information on Frances and James for as long as I can remember <LOL>

Do you have proof of marriage between them? And, have you found any information as to Frances being Indian?

I had the mtDNA test and it did not come back as Indian, but, it didn't say I wasn't either. I know my grandmother told me the story of being Indian when I was growing up and said her father wanted to sign them up, but, their grandmother Sally DYE didn't want him to. Then, he died in 1898 so nothing more was done about it. She never told me until 1950's and then it was very hush, hush. I am sure there is Native American somewhere in our line. The Dye's are listed in the Melungeon list on one of the sites. So, this may be where the Indian comes in....

I would absolutely ADORE anyone with ANY information on the Nightengale family of Nebraska (prior to 1900). I only have record of a Georgiana Nightengale born in Nebraska who moved to NJ and married Ernest Royal Vere Teed (1873-1929). I'm assuming from her husband's age that she must have been born circa 1875.

My mothers side of the family came from Wales at the beginning of the Civil War. Evan Nightengale enlisted in the union army and died at an army camp at the age of fifty. He was born in Wales and was supposedly the 7th cousin of Florence Nightengale "Lady with the Lamp", first woman to tend wounded soldiers during a war. The was was the Crimean war. Maybe your relative was named after her?

I'm searching for information regarding my 4G-grandmother, Frances Nightengale or Nightingale. Very little is known about her so far:

1. She was born about 1773 in DE, according to her entry in the 1850 census record for Mercer Co KY (family #1068). Her parents are unknown.

2. She married my 4G-grandfather, James Salmon, unknown date and location, but most likely either in Mercer Co KY or Surry Co NC. They had at least six children together, all of whom are believed to have been born in Mercer Co KY:
