I just found this 10 year old thread. I do not have much on your Grandfather directly but it appears that his siter married my Great Grandfather. Bridget Nihill married James T Malarney. Mary, Katie, Josephine, MargUrite, Genevieve, Lauretta, Agnes and Cyrilla were all sisters of Thomas Patrick Nihilll. Their parents were Thomas and Cathrine (O'Donnell). What do you know about the accidents that took their parents?

I believe the 3 brothers were from Killaloe, Cnty clare. The town of Scariff is also mentioned. The brothers are listed on the Canadian census first in 1851 for Hastings Cnty, Ontario, Canada, specifically in Marmora. Not much info at this time. I just recently sent off letters to a random list of Nihills in Ireland. Maybe something will hit.
Kevin :)

I am unsure if any of the below children went to the US from Cahercalla, Quin Co Clare.

NIHILL, Patrick, Snr Married Mary Cusack
1790 - 1865
Had children as listed. I am a decendant of Michael Nihill who married Margaret O'REGAN and ended up in Australia

Nihill, John- 1826
NIHILL, Patrick- 1828
NIHILL, Michael- 1829
NIHILL, Patrick- 1832
NIHILL, Bridget- 1834
NIHILL, Mary- 1836
NIHILL, James- 1840

If you are related or linked let me know manamk@bigpond.net.au

I know I found out the below info from a distant relative over here.
Hi Mark
Nice to hear from you.
My family connection to the nihill's is distant but nevertheless interesting.

My paternal great grandfather was John Regan, born 1832 in ireland and died 1893 in victoria, australia. He had a sister Margaret Regan (1824 ireland, to 1906 victoria). Margaret married Michael Nihill (1829-1901) and you probably know the rest.

John and margaret regan (was O'regan, but they dropped the O) must have come to australia for the gold rushes in the 1850's. They were the children of John O'regan and Anne Hallinan of Co Clare, Ireland.

John Regan married Anne Downes in Australia. They had a son John (1875 -1964), who in turn married Agnes Dunphy and had my father James Patrick regan in 1921.

Hope that fills in some gaps.

regards
karen Pimm

Hi Rebekah. I have just read your post and was wondering if you had found any further information. My great grandmother was Anne Nihill who married John Maloney/Moloney 1864 at Coghill's Creek Victoria. They were both born in County Clare Anne about 1840 and John about 1835.I haven't been able to prove when they came to Victoria. I think it was 1857 for John on the Ebba Brahe and about 1858 for Ann although I haven't been able to find her name on any shipping as yet but have found some of her siblings. Anne's parents were Mathew Nihill and Honora Hannan. John's parents were James Maloney & Bridgid Wolfe. Regards Jo

I have many Mary McMahon's in my files, likewise with John and Catherine, however right now I cannot make a connection based on the approximate year of birth you show. I have several lines to get through yet but none that match a Mary with siblings named James and Catherine. I will let you know if I find anything in the near future as I continue to search my McMahon lines. Thanks for checking with me.

I am researching Merritts of Clare- just found a letter written to Michael Merritt in 1863 by his nephew Michael NIHILL- he was a teacher in Corlea National School at the time. We found him in the 1901 census- he was 57 then, married to Bridgett, had five daughters, Anne, Julia, Mary, Delia Cecelia and one son Pat- does anyone know of these Nihills? His mother must have been a Merritt. The letter was signed Michael Nihill, and the return address was John Nihill, Corlea, Feakle, County Clare, Ireland.

Hello Ann,

My branch of the Nihill family lived in Australia in Melbourne and then returned to live in Streatham in the mid 1800's.I have a Word document but this system won't accept it when I try to download it. If you let me have your email address I'll forward it to you.It gives details from the 1881 UK census of the whole family at that time.Interestingly their servant girl was only 15 years old!If anyone else is interested I'll send it on.
I know that a lot of Nihills emigrated to the US ...probably during the potato famine.
Anne ( fabc@bluewin.ch)

Hi Anne--Is your family from CT/W.Mass. It seems that is where my Nihill line lived, worked & slept! I am still sketchy on their information, what I have was initiated by a wedding photo from long ago that my grandmother (age 97) found one day. Then we started putting pieces together piece by piece, but as of late I have not had much time to further research it--this is what I do know: John Nihill b abt 1838 in Ireland married Mary McMahon b 1836 in Ireland, daughter of Dennis & Bridget McMahon.
John & Mary had the following children:
Elizabeth, b 1861 in CT
Ann, b. 1862 in CT
Mary J. b 1865 in CT
John J b 1868 in CT
It appears this family may have moved from CT to the Springfield MA area sometime around 1910 as I have found most of them in the 1910 Census and previous to that they appear in the 1880 & 1870 Census in New Britain CT. So, if you have any information on this family I would love to to add to my family tree. Thanks for being in touch.

Hi Anne,

I'm afraid I have been very lax over the past 6-9months in finding out more about the Nihill family's geneology! But you are probably right about us being related :) My husband's great-grandfather was John J Nihill and his wife was Mary E - their children were Francis, Doris, Donald and Leonard - I believe they immigrated to the US in 1907. Perhaps his name (or some of these) sound familiar? John J was born around 1875 or so according to the US census in 1920 where i found them. Thanks for replying :) Let me know if this helps you any - as far as I know they were originally from teh Co Clare area (Clonlara?)

Jamie.
