NIHISER Katherine "Katie" (Schmidt) The 99 year life of Katie ended on December 17, 2010, at the Toledo Center of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo, Ohio following a stroke that she suffered about one week before.
This was the first time she had been admitted to a hospital in her life and she only saw a regular doctor once in the last 60 years just to get a physical to have eye and dental treatments.
She was proud of the fact that until the heat of this summer in August, she had done all of her own yard work herself for her 80' by 200' lot. She also did her own snow removal unless her neighbors beat her to it.
She was born to John "Jake" and Martha Schmidt in Toledo, Ohio on September 19, 1911.
She was a 1929 graduate of Libbey High School and attended the Libbey Alumni Lunch Bunch gatherings for many years until her passing.
In 1931 she married Arthur Nihiser. During WWII Art's plane was shot down over Germany and he was taken prisoner for many months. Katie continued to be active in the Maumee Valley Chapter of the POW American Ex-prisoners of War.
She had no children of her own but served as a Girl Scout leader and also on the Lott Guild for Lucas County, Ohio Retarded Persons Program.
She and her husband ran a service station on Rugby and S. Detroit for many years until their retirement.
They both loved fishing and enjoyed a summer cottage near East Harbor. In 1983 Katie was a Fish Ohio Award Winner with a 26" walleye.
She was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church on S. Erie St. and also of its South End Seniors Group.
For several years in the 90's she was a tutor for the church's Old South End After-School Program. The last ten years she has volunteered at Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek.
Surviving are nieces and nephews: Richard (Mary) Gallaway, Donna (Thomas) Adams, David (Ruth) Schmidt, Jack (Shawn Messenger) Schmidt, Ted (Wilma) Schmidt, Terrie Trumbull, Jim Trumbull, and several other nephews by marriage.
She was predeceased by parents, stepmother Bertha, and siblings, Helen, Henry, and John (Jewel) Schmidt, Erma (Don) Gallaway, and Hazel (Don) Trumbull.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church at 708 S. Erie St. on Monday, Dec. 20 at 11 A.M. with visitation from 10 A.M.
Contributions may be given to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Arrangements were entrusted to Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, Perrysburg, Ohio.
