Many claim James is son of Samuel, James was b. abt. 1713, Samuel was b. abt 1700. I've never seen any proof one way or the other. Samuel had Samuel Jr. Tobias, Charles, and Rhoda correct? James had James who had James b. 1780 ma Abigail Johnson and died 1863. In Brotherton Wis. 1840 cen. There are three James's in the 1782 mil census of Charlestown so the 3rd must be the 3rd age 3. One of the James's had a wife Sarah. Help me out here.
Can anyone connect this Eliza or Joseph? Is Eliza Ann the daughter of Amos and Ann Green Smith NILES who are the only Niles of record in Salem, or perhaps a family member of different parentage. She does not come up in the Salem birth vitals of the period, but then not all of Amos's kids do.

This may confuse matters more: The 1810 USC for Marshfield , Caledonia Co, Vt., shows what looks to be Abiel Niles, age 16 to 25, (Ancestry.com lists him as Abiel Giles, but it looks more like an "N" to me.) This Abiel was born between 1775 and 1794, probably closer to 1783 if he was at least 21 when he married in 1804 at Croydon, NH.

David & Selah (Chace) Niles married 23 Oct 1785 at Freetown. It's a close call but not impossible for them to have had a son named Abiel. George & Lydia (Douglass) Niles, who married at Freetown, Ma., could be better candidates based on their 1772 marriage date. Selah's father was Abiel Chace. George Niles knew him as he witnessed a land deed for Abiel Chace at Freetown on 4 Sep 1780 at Freetown. Could he have named a son for Abiel??

David and Selah may not have left Ma. The 1800 USC for Middleboro MA shows a David and wife that could be them. On the other hand, Abiel Niles is in 1804 at Croydon, NH, not far from George and Lydia at Alexandria NH. Another David, possibly Geo's son, from Alexandria NH married Betsy Downing at Norton MA in 1792. This David may have stayed in Ma. There was also a Henry in NH near George who may have been the man who married Sarah/Sally Mosher (b c1781) on 22 Nov 1801 at Dartmouth MA. There's no records of David and Henry in that area of NH after about 1808. Henry had a son Levi b 1803 and one of Levi's daughters was named Lydia.

The Fred H. Niles you mentioned married 2nd Ella B. Peasley on 23 Apr 1889 at Brighton (Long Pond) VT. She may be the Ella B. Niles, age 40, born Canada, married 21 years at Concord NH with a dau Helen at home, age 18. No Fred with her. There is also a record of Clara Byron (Fred's 1st wife) marrying Frank Auguer on 16 Jun 1888 ay Lyndon VT. So maybe Clara didn't die in 1888??

Thank you Allen for responding again so quickly. I am more confused now than ever LOL I did not know that David (Abial's son) married three times. Sarah Gray rang a bell I have some notes on a gray family that lived in North Troy Vermont. I will have to find them. Fred H Niles(he married Clara (Niles) Biron /Byron) They had two children Gertrude Evelyn Maude Niles Wood Maxfield. She was born 1882 and her brother (my grandfather) Archie wardner Niles Norris born 1887. Irena(Niles) Biron/Byron (Married Francis Biron)Was Clara's mother. Clara died a year after Archie was born. Archie's cousin once removed William Norris and his wife Abbie Fields Norris adopted him in 1888. William's mother was Mezura niles, Irena and David's sister. Mezura had married Francis wood before that. Her son Joseph wood married his cousin Gertrude Maude evelyn Niles in dixville Quebec in the early 1900's.Between the time of Archie's adoption and her getting married in Dixville no one knows who raised Gertrude Maude. I inteviewed a few family members that remember visiting a Gray family in North Troy Vermont .Gertrude used to write to My aunt and through her children it was told she had a half brother and a half sister. Now No one seems to know what happened to Fredreick H Niles My theory is she was six years old when Archie was adopted so Fred probably left her with someone in the Gray family. That's why Gertrude's children and grandchildren visited there . Like I say I will have to find my notes on that.
Concerning Abial's parents I still have not heard from the Croyden New Hampshire historian. Seeing there was an Abial/Abiel C Niles and an Albertus C Niles I was thinking either it maybe C for Chase or for Caswell .I know you are going with the theory of George niles and Lydia Douglas I still want to go with David Niles and Salah/selah Chase or Chace. We may never know but at this point I may just put both lines in my personal family tree.

Also of note this line of the niles tree through Abial C Niles marriage to Harriet Field connects to the Thayer Family up to the Bass and John Alden of the Mayflower.
Abbie Fields Norris Family (Archie's adoptive mother) Her mother was Lucinda davis Married John Fields (Can't find his line either ) all residing in Hartland vermont.Lucinda is in Dolar Davis line which includes Huldah Thayer. So both sides of the family connect up the Thayer line. Also if you go farther there are Bloods and Colburns and they connect to the Clement Family. Isaac clement had three daughters. Two daughters marry into the family Polly Clement Married Joseph Wood who had Francis who married Mezura Niles. The other sister jemima Clement married A Mosher who inturn has Inez mosher who married my grandfather Archie before he met my grandmother. The girls aunt Elen Clement (Isaac's sister)Married an Aldrich and Ernest aldrich married two daughters of Gertrude maude Niles wood.
Lastly, Abbie fields Norris, Archie's adoptive mother her brother Wardner (where Archie gets his middle name) married Lydia Jennie Weston who in two artcles I found is a direct descendant of Myles Standish. (can't find the line yet) Still working on all this . Just thought I would fill in the holes that I could just in case it may help anyone. Thank you again for your time and expertise.
George Niles & Phebe Moore's son David, born 1770, died 20 Nov 1842 at Hopkinton RI; m 18 Sep 1817 Vashti Clark, b 1783; d 29 Apr 1838. He doesn't seem to have had any connections with the Niles families of Middleboro & Freetown Mass.

Most if not all of Niles at and near Middleboro probably descend from David 4 (20 Oct 1700 - ?) and his wife Hannah Seekins whom he married 20 Nov 1720. They had at least the following five children (baptized at Braintree, Ma on 26 Aug 1733).

Mercy [5], m 1743 at Middleboro
Ruth, m 1743 "
Benj., m 1749 Ruth Niles at W.G., RI
Dorothy, b 24 Sep 1733, m 18 Apr 1752 Jos. Downing
Samuel 5, m 1754 Eliz. Reynolds at Middleboro

Possibly three more, not recorded: (born after 1733)

David [5], Jr., b ?c1735 m ? Mrs Mary Caswell 4 Mar 1762 at Middleboro. Possibly the same "David Niles Jun" grantee on a 16 Aug 1784 land deed at Freetown with Ebenezer Hathaway. And maybe the David Niles and family warned out of Freetown in 1764.

Abraham/Abrham [?5], m int. Mary Caswell of Freetown in 1765. That marriage may not have happened as he's shown marrying another woman soon after. He may have been deceased by 1781.

Hannah [?5], m Freetown Nov 1765 David Juckett of Freetown.

David [?5] Niles, Jr., b ?c1735, may have had a son David [6] born c1766; d 15 May 1846 Middleboro, age 80. He may have been the David who married Salah Chace in 1785.

Samuel [5] Niles may have also had a son David [6] born c1756; d c1784 Orange Co., NY; m Cath. Chronkite. Daughter Cath. b 1784; d 1876; m Alexander Mears. David enlisted 6 Feb 1777 age 23, in 1779, dark hair/complexion. Capt Job Pierce, Col Sprout 4th Regt, Ply. Co.

Samuel [5] may have had sons: James, b c1759, enlisted 1 Jan 1777 at Middleboro, age 20, Dark hair/complexion. Same company as David [6]. James deserted and was last seen with the enemy at Peekskill, NY.

Benj [5] Niles & Ruth Niles (of Nathl) of W.Gr., RI., had a son George born 1750 RI; d 1821 Fairfield VT; m 1772 Lydia Douglass at Freetown. Geo had sons: ?? Henry, ??David, ?? Abiel. Benj [5] may also have had a son Benj [6] who enlisted 8 April 1777 in Capt Job Pierce's Co.

Some of the above is speculative and based on relationships possible from known dates of marriage, census, and death vitals.

Census records after 1790 show still more Davids in the Freetown and Middlboro areas who may be descendants or Davids who left then returned from another state. If their grave stones could be found that might yield more clues.
Thank you so much for replying so fast! I have reviewed all posts on genforum and it does make sense that George and Lydia may be Abiel's parents. I contacted the historian /census taker of Croydon Vermont because the more I searched that area I found a LOT of Chases. I still would like to connect David Niles and Selah or Salah Chase (It is not sarah). Her father was named Abiel he was married to Ruth Baggs.(All in Freetown). Betsey King's parents Benjamin King and Lydia Dunham both died in Croydon New Hampshire Sullivan County. I am waiting to hear back from the historian. Do we know which David married selah/salah Chase? George Niles and Phebe Moore's David would be too young if born in 1770. Thanks again for replying so fast. Shelley Niles

Re: David NILES m. Bestey ALLARD

David Niles, born c1821 Stanstead PQ, Canada, was the son of Abiel & Betsey (King)Niles. David married (1) Betsey Allard who died before 1870 perhaps at Glover, Orleans Co., VT. David may have next married (2) Mary Jane Palmer on 10 Aug 1867 at Derby VT by Asa Kimball, J.P. Jane may have died very soon after. David married next (3) Sarah (Stone)Gray on Feb 2, 1870 at Barton VT by M.F. Blake, JP. The 1870 census shows him at Glover VT, age 49 born Canada, and wife Sarah 38, born VT, with son Fred H., age 12, born [Barford] Canada. Two of Sarah's children, surname Gray, are in the same household. David isn't in the 1880 US census so he may have returned to Canada.

David's son Wright E. Niles, born Jul 1864, Canada, immigrated to the USA in 1884, according to the US 1900 NH Colebrook twp census. Wright m(1) 28 Mar 1884 Mary Joyce, b 1870 Canada. Wright & Mary had four ch: Wm E, Fred A., and Gertie M & Myrtie (twins, born 1890). Mary may have died after 1890. The 1910 USC shows Wright at Carroll twp, Coos Co., NH. He's listed as a widower. Son, Fred A is not counted in the family but the other three chidren are there but their ages and places of birth and Wright's look to be guestimates assuming the previous 1900 census is accurate for them.

Wright in 1910 is listed as a widower but that seems incorrect if he married Dora E. Pickwell in 1907. Dora was born c1889 Adams, Mass. In 1910 Dora Niles and her daughter Marguerite Niles, age 3/12 months are living at Wilmington, Windham Co., VT, with her parents, Fred & Mary Pickwell. In 1920 Dora is at North Adams Mass listed as divorced with another daughter Rosina Niles, age 7, born VT. In 1930 Dora is married to John White at North Adams Mass and Rosina Niles is with them, age 18 born Vt.

As mentioned above, David (b 1821) was the son of Abiel Niles (b c1783). Abiel's father hasn't been determined but my guess (no proof!) is he may have been a son of George & Lydia (Douglass) Niles of Middleboro Mass, Danbury NH, and Franklin VT where he died in 1821 intestate. Geo was born in 1750 the son of Benjamin 5 & Ruth (Niles)Niles of W. Greenwich RI. Geo's father Benjamin lived in Middleboro before going to RI where he married Ruth & Geo was born. Geo later went to Middleboro then on to NH & upstate VT The given name Abial was very popular in the Middleboro families. Geo's sons may have been David, Henry, and Abiel. This last is pure speculation. Any info proving it would be very much appreciated.

You said that your grandmother's name was Fanny Niles-- did she marry a Hickok by any chance?

My great-great-great grandmother was named Fanny Niles (1811-1864), and she married Wyatt Hickok. They are both buried in Northern New York (Keeseville, Ausable, Clinton County).

My great-great grandmother was one of their daughters, Bessie Hickok.

Bessie's daughter by her second marriage was Blanche Gale, my great grandmother. Blanche married William Bosworth Carpenter, and their daughter Muriel Carpenter Gibson who was my grandmother. Most of the descendents from this part of my family settled primarily in St. Lawrence County, in the areas of Potsdam and Norwood.

Do you know if we are any relation? Please feel free to e-mail me directly at Seanachaid@aol.com.

Thank you,

Heather Gibson

I still have had no luck locating details of Narcissa Angelina's death and burial. I did find that her mother, Angelina (Odell) Daboll remarried in 1842 and in 1850 was with her new husband, Dr. Daniel Haynes, in Nassau NY. Daughter Angelina is with them. Angelina Haynes died 20 Aug 1853 and is buried in Nassau. Daughter Angelina is with her uncle, Noah Odell, in Stephentown in 1855. After Benedict's death, the trail goes cold. I have Benedict's military record which tells of his death 22 Jun 1863 of disease of the heart at Baton Rouge. He must not have been a well man, as he was "left in the hospital at Carrollton LA" in Jan and Feb 1863.
I'm interested to know if you are descended from these VT Niles - if you care to share that.
I discovered new Odell information in the Stephentown NY Heritage Center a week or more ago - hope to check church records in SLC in November. I do have more information on the three children of Olive and Benedict and their descendants.

I did find Angeline in the 1860 USC in Pownal - she is listed with her father-in-law Spencer. Haven't tried 1870 yet. I'm hoping that I can find the whole Guardianship file on film at the FHC in Salt Lake.

I have someone asking me now how we know that the Benedict Niles in the Baton Rouge National Cemetery is the same one who married Narcissa Daboll. He claims some Benedict married a Sibel Rood in Bennington in 1865, and he doesn't think it is the older Benedict C. Niles b ca 1811. Can you tell me more about the Civil War record? Thanks.

Tnaks for your message. I realized last night after I checked my data for the 100th time that Olive could not have been married to Millard - nothing fit, since I was not able to search for their marriage. That birth of her mother in MA is the clincher.

The Daboll family records usually record Narcissa A. as Angelina (also her mother's name), but the "e" and "a" are probably interchangable. Olive gives her mother's name as Angelina on the marriage record in Ipswich in 1884.

I have a copy of the guardianship given to Ebenezer for both Olive and Frederick, and, interestingly, there is no mention of the mother's circumstances, only that the father is deceased, late of Stamford VT.

I have found various records and their own recordings of the births of Olive and Frederick in Pownal, Stamford, and Halifax. On the marriages records of both, Olive says Pownal and Fred says Stamford. When Benedict enlists, he gives his residence as Clarksburg MA - this can't be too long after Frederick is born - and Clarksburg is only a stone's throw across the border from Stamford.

I have done the 1860 USC page by page for Nassau and Stephentown - guess I'll do the same for the VT towns. I will be in Salt Lake City in November and in Stephentown late next week. Just came back from a trip to VT but spent most of my time in Halifax.

I'll keep you posted with what I can find about Miss Daboll/Mrs. Niles.

My great grandfather, Charles Martin Niles, was born in Pownal, Vt in July 1859 according to a New York Times article on him dated Jan. 13, 1900. Family notes say he was born about 1861 in Rutland, VT. The 1870 census shows an 11 year old living in Wallingford, Rutland, Vt. area but with no other Niles in the household. The 1900 census shows him living in Ossining, NY. I know this is him because I have a picture of him and information that he was serving as a minister at St. Paul's Episcopal Church there. I wonder if he is of the Benedict Niles family in Vermont.

This is one of my family members. How sad that such a sweet photo was lost. Do you have a scan of the back of the photo.

I have her obituary. It is kind of sad.

Mrs. Nonie Ann Niles, wife of Geo. S. Carr, of Poyntelle, died on April 10, after an extended illness dating back to two weeks before the birth of a baby girl on March 28th. The infant had the grip which its mother had contracted in caring for her children who were ill and on April 3rd it died. From that day the mother grew worse, and just before the end her friends believed she would rally, but it proved to be only the dying flicker of the candle of life. She said, “It is all for the best.” Deceased was the oldest child of R. C. and Elizabeth Niles, of Preston, and was born Feb.1st, 1867. She married October 21st, 1886, and is survived by her husband, five children, her parents, four brothers and three sisters: Henry C. Niles, of Pleasant Mt.; Fred W. Niles, Matamoras, Pa.; Mrs. John Stearns, Starrucca; Mrs. John Cline, Binghamton; Mrs. L. Hill, Forest City; Rufus E. and Roy C., at home. Barely thirty-seven years of age, she was the splendid mother of seven children, a boy named Leroy, besides the infant babe having died. A heart broken husband and his little grief stricken flock of five children are left to mourn their sudden and terrible loss. It can be said of her, “She hath done what she could.” She did work that was earnest, brave and true, moment by moment the long day through bearing the burdens of motherly care with patient grace and daily prayer bringing silent rivers of happiness whose hidden fountains few may guess. Her funeral was held at the M. E. Church at Winwood; sermon by Rev. J. N. Meaker. The choir rendered, “Nearer My God to Thee” and other appropriate music. There were lovely flowers upon her casket, placed there by those who knew her and loved her. A large procession followed the remains to Winwood cemetery where the beloved form was committed to the earth, never more to know weariness, care or illness to wait the morning of the resurrection.

Just as I was about to answer, I saw Allen's posting of information on Charles M. I knew he was not in my collateral line of Benedict. I did find Charles M. as the minister of Trinity Episcopal Church in Rutland at least from 1891-1895. I hope Allen's info is a help to you.

It's been 9 years since you asked and you may already know about Fannie Niles by now. Her parents were Ambrose S. & Mary E. Niles. The 1880 US census for Placer Ca shows Fannie with her parents and siblings. Ambrose appears to have been deceased by 1890 as the 1900 census for San Joaquin Ca shows Mary E. (b Nov 1853 WI) married to Louis Geither with her children Jabez, Mattie C, and Laura Niles at home. Mary & Louis Geither are at Sutter Ca in 1910. That census shows them having been married for 21 years.

Ambrose, single, is at Placer, Ca, in the 1870 census. Ambrose may be the son of Robert & Pheobe Niles both age 49 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY. The Ambrose in Robert's family in 1850 is aged 22, which agrees almost with Ambrose's age given in the later censuses. The Ambrose in Robert's family is shown born in NY, occupation clerk. Robert and Phoebe were probably married in NY ca. 1824, based on their daughter Jane's age, 26.

If you have learned any more for sure about Ambrose's parents names please let me know.

Both of Ambrose's parents were born in CT according to his 1880 USC entry. This does conflict with the 1850 USC for Robert & Phoebe which has Robert born in NY & Phoebe in RI. The name Ambrose appears more frequently in CT prior to 1800 than in any other state. It is likely Ambrose descends from one of the CT Niles families.

Most Nileses in VT descend from Nathaniel 2 Niles and his brother Joseph 2 Niles. I descend from their brother Increase 2 Niles. There are decendants of Increase in VT, NH and Maine. My own home state is Maine where my branch moved to ca.1777. Benedict 8 (Spencer 7, Russell 6, Spencer 5, John 4 Nathl 3, Jos 2, John 1)Niles had three children: George E. Niles, Olive J, and Frederick B. Niles. George and his wife Sarah Sherman had one daughter Eva who married Noris Towslee at Pownal VT. Olive married Edward F Riley. Frederick married Levina Felton. Olive and Frederick were both living in Ebenezer Daboll's household after Benedict's death. Ebenr Daboll adopted Fred as his son in 1866 court papers as you say but while Benedict's decease is noted there is no mention of Fred's mother's death or her whereabouts, if living. She may have been confined somewhere.

The Angeline with Spencer Niles in the 1860 USC is his 2nd wife Angeline Murphy, b ca 1820 NY. She's not the same Angeline(a) who married Benedict Niles, b 1833. The birth record for Benedict & Angelina (Daboll) Niles' child Olive is proof they were her parents.(See my last post here). The older Benedict (b 28 Feb 1811)married Sibel Rood Myers on 5 May 1865, as his 2nd wife. He was an uncle of the younger Benedict who was killed in 1863 Civil War. This website has a database for Military Burials. See that for info on the younger Benedict.

Re: Benedict Niles in Vermont

Vermont Vital Records for Pownal, VT, show Olive Justina Niles born 4 April 1859, daughter of Angeline Dalbalt and Benedict Niles, father born Pownal and mother born Stephentown, NY [FHL Film No. 0027641, spelling of Angeline's surname phonetic?].

I didn't locate Olive with her parents in the 1860 USC. In 1870 Olive and her brother Frederick are with the Ebenezer Daboll family at Northborough, MA. In 1880 older brother George (b Stamford VT c1857) is boarding as a servant, married, at Bennington, VT. His wife "Libbie" and daughter Eva (b 23 Sep 1879 Pownal) are living nearby with a Sherman family relative.

The 1880 and 1900 USCs for Olive and Millard Nichols show Olive born at VT with both her parents born CA in 1880 and in 1900 her father born VT and mother born MA. This isn't consistant with census data for Olive and Edward F. Riley (b ca.1854 Ipswich Ma). The 1900 USC (Ipswich) lists Olive J. "Rilley" born Apr 1859VT, father born VT, mother born NY, married 16 years. This is consistant with Olive's birth record and points strongly to Olive and Edward Riley as the correct couple.

Like you I've not found Olive's mother Angelina or Narcissa in the 1860 or 1870 US censuses. Her brother Ebenezer adopted or was appointed Frederick's guardian in 1866 so she may have been deceased or non compos. She would have been under extream stress with three small children and husband deceased (Benedict died in the Civil War 23 Jun 1863 and is buried at the Baton Rouge Nat'l Cem Sect 17 Site 1067).

If I find more will let you know.
