To Whom It May Concern,
I am looking for my GGrandfather Nicolaus Nissen who was born in Clansbiehl parish/county? in Tondern District in S-H on 11 December 1846. He migrated to Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA on 23 April 1882? He is listed on the 1880 US census. He married Christina Barbara Blanz on 04 April 1883. She was born on 02 September 1862 and died in childbirth on 02 June 1890.
I have more information after he came here but do not have the date of his death. I think it was 1928. I seem to reach a dead end whe I try to go backward. Could our name have gotten changed along the way?
Do you have ANY information about him there and about his family tree who probably stayed there? I would appreciate any information such as why he left (if known), what his full name may have been, any records about him and the family, and if he was ever in the military there. I know there were a lot of wars going on during that time. Maybe that is why he left (I don't blame him if he did).
I know he had a brother who came here with him but the brother supposedly stayed in Chicago and he came to Lake Charles. Family story is that he told his brother "If I wanted to stay in the cold weather I would not have left Germany". It is apparant that the area probably still belonged to Denmark when he was born.
Thank you very much,
Ray Nissen
