Maria Karolina NISSEN & Charles Johnson parents of Hulda Marie b. 1891 Chicago,IL

Hoping to find someone also researching this family.
Maria (Marie, Mary) Karolina NISSEN b. 1 June 1869 Närpes, Finland (Swede-Finn) married Charles (Chas) JOHNSON 1891 in USA. They had 5 children, but only 3 are recorded as living on the 1900 census for Chicago. Hulda (Hilda, Huldah)Johnson b. 21 Nov 1891; Oscar Johnson b. July 1894; Hilmer (Jalmer)Johnson b. Sept 1895. Another daughter Anna was born abt. 1906 and is found on the 1910 census with siblings and parents. But on the 1910 and 1920 census, the father's name is recorded as Carl G. Johnson rather than Charles (Chas)Johnson. The family lived in Chicago, Illinois.
Maria is the 4th of 9 children born to my great-grandparents, Petter Johanson and Maria Johan Henriksdot of Nissfolk farm, Kalax, Närpes, Finland. I have much of her ancestry. I am hoping to find her descendants or others connected to her family.
My mother and grandparents lived in Primghar, O'Brien Co., Iowa. I don't know anything about my grandmother's folks.
Hello again,
I don't know why this address comes up this way. My address is texray50 so I hope you are able to respond. We just had the funeral of the last member of our family who encountered Nicolaus Nissen. She was Ruth Mildred Nissen Norwood and she was 90. She told me that he liked to sit by the window and read his newspaper and he would stack them at the wall until getting rid of them. She also said he had a cleaners business that failed and he gave the property to the town and worked as night watchman there until he retired or passed on which ever he was able to do. Thank you again. Ray Nissen

Ray,
I am no relation to your Nissen family but it caught my eye and I did a bit of looking in some of the databases available to me. Following is what I found. Hope it is of some help.

From the Louisiana State Death Index:

Name: Nicolas Nisson
Death Date: 10 Sep 1928
Age: 81
Parish: Calcasieu
Certificate Number: 11460
Volume: 25

1880 US Census-Louisiana-Calcasiu Parish-Lake Charles 3rd. Occ: Laborer Born: SH

1900 US Census-Louisiana-Calcasieu Parish-Lake Charles City

Nissen, Nikola born Dec 1846 in Germany. Age 53. Number of years married 8. Year Immigrated: 1872. Naturalized. Occupation: Dairyman
Anne, wife born Feb 1860 in Georgia. Age 40
Julius H. Nissen, son, born Dec 1887 in LA
Johanna M. Nissen, daughter, born Jan 1889 in LA

Note: Childrens Father born Germany, Mother born Louisiana so must be Nicolaus’ children. Born Georgia, parents born Georgia.

1920 US Census-LA- Calcasieu-Lake Charles Ward 1. District 38

Nissen, N. age 73. Born germany. Parents born Germany. Occupation Laborer – Cons?
Nissen, Annie, wife. Age 60 born Georgia.

I also looked at Hamburg Emigration records and 1872 Immigration records. I found one record that could be of some help but there is tape over some of the information and is very difficult to read. If you post your email address I will send you a copy of the page and you can take a look for yourself. Do you happen to know Nicolaus’ brother’s name?
If I had to guess the three names listed were:Nils Christensen Occ: Smith? From Denmark, Lauritz Nissen, farmer from Denmark and Nico? Nissen, farmer from Denmark. Arrived Oct 1872 in New Orleans.

Oh, one other thing, I took a look at the Danish census records which included some of the Schleswig Holstein area. http://ddd.dda.dk/dddform_uk.asp?sit=2

For Sydslesvig, Klansbull, Burg, Kathengebaude, 19
Year 1845

Since this was 1845, the year before your Nicolaus was born, I am not sure if this is your family but the only one with small children. There were other Nissens in Klanxbull. You could take a look to see if any of the other names are familiar.

Jes Christian Nissen age 44, Married. Birthplace: Neukirchen
Christina Bahnsen, age 29, Married.
Looking for my Nissens

Does anyone have these names in their Nissen ancestors?:
Jens, Jes, Anne Sophie, or Jacob

They are siblings of my Jorgen and Peter Nissen of Hoptrup Denmark. They were born approx. in the 1840's and or 1850's. The Danish records have no death dates for them, so it's likely they came to America. Their parents were Nis Nissen and Anne Marie Jessen.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Barbara

I am in the same boat regarding the Nissen Line. My GreatGrandmother was Katharina Metta Nissen Married to Gustav Haverbeck (in Stamford Ct). I have her death certificate. Katharina was born Sept.19, 1855. Her father's name was Johann Nissen. Katharina died on January 24, 1944 in Tarrytown, NY. All the certificate states is that she was born in Germany. However, The area she came from was still under Danish rule when she was born. Denmark ceded the area to Germany in 1864.
The reason for my diligent search is not just for genealogy, but for medical reasons also. Katharina had Charcot Maria Tooth Syndrome. This is hereditary. There have been one in each generation of her descendents to have this syndrome. The lastest a 36yr old.
Family tales say she came from Hamburg but I have not been able to verify this at all. I can't even find her arriving on a ship to any of the ports. (I think she walked on water).
I know there was 1 sister here as I have an Anna Nissen who was listed as a sponsor for my grandmother at baptism.
So you see I need help too at least for the health reasons.
Judy Christopher (Nissen/Haverbeck)
Katharina Metta Nissen b. Sept 1855.
I am trying to find any one who may be related to this woman. Katharina is my GrGrandmother. She married Gustav Haverbeck in Stamford Ct. in 1880.

This is important to me because there is a hereditory factor here. Katharina (Catherine) had CMT (Charcot Maria Tooth Syndrome). This Syndrome is indigenous to the "low countries, Northern Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, and parts of Italy This is a form of dystrophy that attacks the extremities, arms, hands, legs and feet. This disease has come down through the family attacking at least 4 or more.

I would like to be able to contact any of the Nissen Family who carry this Syndrome
Judith Christopher (Nissen/Haverbeck)

Dear Mr. Nissen,
I live the north of Germany and I can give you some hints concerning your ancestor. I think it's unlikely that your familiy name has changed because it is rather common in the area your ancestor came from (It actually is a patronymic name meaning "Son of Nis" - a short form of the name Nicolaus that especially occurs in Denmark and he northernmost part of Schleswig-Holstein). But I believe his birthplace has been misspelled: it should be Klanxbüll instead of Clansbiehl (a little village in the northwest of Schleswig-Holstein, close to the present Danish border and the embankment that leads to the island of Sylt). There is a society in Germany that is running a website dealing with emigration from Schleswig-Holstein to the U.S.(www.aggsh.de)and there is also an English version of this site! So if you contact them concerning your great-grandfather they might be able to help you.

I hope I could help you a little bit.
Best wishes
Frederik Jessen

Nissen in Denmark or Germany

To Whom It May Concern,
I am looking for my GGrandfather Nicolaus Nissen who was born in Clansbiehl parish/county? in Tondern District in S-H on 11 December 1846. He migrated to Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA on 23 April 1882? He is listed on the 1880 US census. He married Christina Barbara Blanz on 04 April 1883. She was born on 02 September 1862 and died in childbirth on 02 June 1890.

I have more information after he came here but do not have the date of his death. I think it was 1928. I seem to reach a dead end whe I try to go backward. Could our name have gotten changed along the way?

Do you have ANY information about him there and about his family tree who probably stayed there? I would appreciate any information such as why he left (if known), what his full name may have been, any records about him and the family, and if he was ever in the military there. I know there were a lot of wars going on during that time. Maybe that is why he left (I don't blame him if he did).

I know he had a brother who came here with him but the brother supposedly stayed in Chicago and he came to Lake Charles. Family story is that he told his brother "If I wanted to stay in the cold weather I would not have left Germany". It is apparant that the area probably still belonged to Denmark when he was born.

Thank you very much,
Ray Nissen

He married Christina Barbara Blanz or Bainz on 7AP1883 in New Orleans and they had two children: my grandfather Julius Henry Nissen (2??1884-17F1953) and a dauther Johanna Marie Magdalene Nissen (I do not know her married name[16Je1889-1965 or 1966?]). Christina died at age 27 on 2JE1890 and Nicolaus remarried. I do not know her name but the family said the she was no very pleasant to be around. I think Nicolaus died around 1929. We Nissens in Texas would appreciate any help possible as we are up against a brick wall. Thank you.

My great grandfather was born in 1846 in Glansbiehl, Tonder, S-H, North Germany. I have no information about his parents or family before he came to the USA. He is listed on the 1880 census in Louisiana and married a Christina (I apologize that I do not have her surname) and died about 1929. They had two children (Julius Henry and "Anna". Julius married Stella Irene Ray and they were the parents of my late father Ray A. Nissen, Sr. Please help me if you can.
