I am trying to trace back my wife's family tree, her name is Sarah Nix- Vansel. Her father's name is Michael Lee Nix,he was born in Boise,ID. Her grand father's name is Jasper Nutton Nix, he was raised in Oklahoma, but now resides in Independence, MO, he is now in his 70's. Her great grandfather was Edmon or Raymond Roscoe Nix, he was married to Elsie Elizabeth Miller, they were from Oklahoma, Jasper's dad died when he was around 15 years old. They are part Cherokee/ Choctaw Indian. We are at a loss because no one knows anything about his family, he still has family in Carter County, OK. If you have any info please leave a message on here or send me a message on my facebook page.

Sincerely,
Robert Vansel

Henry Lee's oldest daughter Myrtle married a Jackson (Ben) and they raised their family there.
Sue, I checked all of your NIX family members with my family and cannot find any connection. However I think I have found a 1870 census record for Varm and his family. The interesting item is the lady Nancy BAKER age 58. I suggest that she may be Varn's widowed mother, and the 18 year Delilah his sister. I remember a NIX family in SC with wife Nancy Baker. Is it worth searching for that family?
1870 United States Federal Census about William V Nix
Name:William V Nix
Estimated Birth Year:abt 1834
Age in 1870: 36
Birthplace: Georgia
Home in 1870:Militia District 518, Berrien, Georgia
Race:White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Nashville

William V Nix 36
Margaret Nix 38
Fathy A Nix 12
George W Nix 10
Nancy Baker 57
Delilah Baker 18
================
Line 11,
Nix, William V., 36, M, W, Farmer, Ga,
, Margaret, 38 F, W, Keeping House, Ga,
,Fathy A., 12, F, W, at home, Ga,
, George W., 10, M, W, farm laborer, GA,
Baker, Nancy, 57, F, Retired from Housekeeping, S.C.
, Delilah, 18, F, W, Domestic Servant, Ga,

I must have been attempting to connect Varn Nix to my family in North Alabama. I descend from Jennings Nix of Altoona. He removed from Pendelton District of South Carolina with his extended family in 1851. They settled in the area of Murphree Valley and Warrior River Valley in what was then Blount County. I have several George Washington Nix families in my list but cannot identify the one you are descendant from. I would love to share information with you. daltonn@knology.net

Robert, Thanks for the infromation. I have been searching for members of this family for the past ten years, and have collected a lot of information. But it is a difficult family to follow. There are Mary Ann's and John D.'s behind every door. One of each in the Nix, Carter, and Donald, family and all about the same age. Also there are several uses of the name Littleberry, and it seems as they age they become Berry and name a son Littleberry. John Daniel III named one of his sons John Daniel. I am going on vacation today. When I return in about two weeks I will pull all of my details together and send them to you. I am decidated to identifying these families. Yes I would love any material you could scan. Photos, but more importanly documents. I am retired and have plenty of time to dig out details. My address is. daltonn@knology.net

I am interested in the family of Thomas Littleberry Nix and Mary Dearest Donald. When Thomas Littleberry died in Abbeville South Carolina abt 1833, Mary Dearest and her children, John D., Edward C, Mary Ann, Lucy West and Emeline Catharine Rebecca Nix joined the Donald family on the trip to Mississippi. Abt 1846 the family sent John D. Nix back to South Carolina to settle some of his father's legal affairs. When he returns to. Mississippi, he had a wife and daughter. The wife was Mary Ann the daughter of Jennings Nix of Pickens, S.C. They may have been cousins?
John D. and Mary Ann had a total of 12 children: Martha A. 1848, Mary Jane 1849, Letty 1852, Thomas 1854, Edward 1857, Eliza 1850, Unknown Son, 1862.Margaretta Clara (Maggie) 1864, Mary B. 1866, Unknown Son 1868, Rebecca 1871 and John D. 1871. Can you add to this information? I believe this Nix line has terminated.

I have a copy of the same Census and Nancy Baker listed as Retired helping farm labor and Delilah as Domestic labor.
If she was listed as Nancy Baker in SC I do not feel that she and Delilah would be listed as Baker if she were Varnell's mother. Varnell's wife was born in NC and I am checking into both N & SC and also the Nix line of Virginia and Tenn. So far I have no clue as to where he came from. He listed in several Census' that he was born in Georgia.

We'll just have to keep digging. Happy hunting.

Sue

I do not know who his parents were, that is one of the things I am researching and like you said there are so many William Nix's out there and so many George Washington's that it is a difficult job.

My W.V. Nix b. Dec.25, 1835 d. May1, 1911 (buried in Empire Church Cemetary, Lanier County, GA) was married in Pulaski County, GA in 1855 to Margaret Ann Mullis (Peggy) b. 1842.
I attended the Dedication of Confederate Marker and Iron Cross services in 1998 and have pictures and the leaflet that was given out there. According to several census reports and his Civil War records he was born in GA but I don't know where. His 2nd wife was Piety Row b abt 1879 m. June 4, 1895 (she was the aunt of Piety Ann Row who married her step-son GW Nix).
His Children were:
1) Mary Fatha Nix b.1857 M. William F. Rowland
2) George Washington Nix b. Mar 12, 1858 d. Feb 9, 1932 m. Piety Ann Row abt 1879 she was b Aug 29, 1862 d. May 16, 1908.

GW's children were"
1) Joseph Varn Nix b. Jun 11, 1882 d. Nov 20, 1963 m. Nancy Lodusta Swain Dec. 13, 1903. Had 12 children.
2) Eli Lester Nix (My Grandfather) b.Sep 19, 1884 d. Apr 5, 1927 m. Eliza Jane Fender Aug 20, 1905. Had 6 children.
3) William Frank Nix b. sept 12, 1886 d Apr 5, 1978 m Minnie Vickery. Had 6 children.
4) Missouri Arzilla Nix b. Oct 21, 1888 d. Jun 26, 1966 m Hiram M. Ray Aug 21, 1904. Had 2 children.
5) Maggie Lee Nix b. Dec 22, 1891 d. May 1, 1921 m Vaden Hughes Aug 15, 1909. Had 4 children.
6) Elbert James Nix b. Jan 23, 1893 d. Jul 12, 1971 m Maxie Harper Jun 21, 1922. Had 7 children.
7) Richard Miles Nix b. Jan 22, 1895 d. Sep 10, 1978 m. Mary Langford. Had 2 children.
8) Thomas Calvin Nix b Jan 29, 1897 d Feb 28, 1973 m Bessie Lee Hill. Had 4 children. M. Beulah ?. Had 7 children.
9) Annie Bell Nix b. Jun 11, 1899 d Dec 10, 1922 m. Abb Guthrie. Had 2 children.
10) Charlie Columbus Nix b Sep 12, 1902 d May 13, 2002 m Eula May Yancy. Had 8 children. M Oralee Hughes. In his obit. it lists an half brother named Lucious Nix. I remember Mama and Granny talking about a Lucious but don't know if it was this one, will try and track this down soon.

Don't know if you can tie any of this to your line or not but I would think that it would have to be through William Varnell's brothers and I have no names for them. Mama said that there were 3 brothers who were all in the Confederate Army. They separated during the war and one went to Alabama, one to Texas and Varnell stayed in Georgia. I have no proof of this and don't know where Mama got this story but from seeing other Nix family postings and the repeat of names from one generation to another it would answer a lot of questions, IF we can tie all of these family's together.

Hope this helps you, or someone else. If I can research any of this for you in the S.GA area let me know.

Sue
Brenda, My nane is Jack Nix, Son of Grady & Lucy Nix. I grew up in Walker Co Al between Carbon Hill & Nauvoo. My grand father Was John Thomas Nix & I think he was a brother to Henry Lee Nix.According to my information my grandfather was born on 12/29/1874 and Henry Lee was born on 10/16/1881 & died 5/13/1940. They were the sons of Ambrose M ( Bud ) Nix and Emily Louisa Johnson. Ambrose was born in South Carolina on 3/24/1848 & died in Walker County on 12/08/1893. Emily was born in Georgia 1854. I'm not sure of the following but there was another Ambrose Nix born in Edgefield Co. S. C. in 1824 who was married to Susan Price of Augusta S. C.( maybe North Augusta) and they had a son named Ambrose. If henry & john Thomas were brothers then that would make us cousins. I would appreciate any info. you might have on the Nix's. I'm new at this also. I do have the names of the children of both Ambrose Nix if you are interested. Thanks Jack Nix

Do you have any information about Jonas that you could share (other than census info)? If by chance you descend thru James Masterson Nix, then any info on those guys would be greatly appreciated.

I attended the funeral of Wanda Gregory, the best Nix genealogist I know. For 35 years we have traced the Nix family and she always said "document, document, document". There is so much information that is incorrect on the Nix family, that documentation is important. There is no John Mise Nix, it is simply John Nix, read the original obit in the hand written will of Edward Nix and you will see. In the old cursive writing,"N's" had two humps looking like a "M" in modern writing and the "x" looks like "s e". That is why you see Ambrose Nise(Nix) in the 1800 Federal Census. God bless Wanda Gregory.

Hi Dalton,

Over the 4th of July weekend, I went to visit my dad in Jones County, MS. He is 83 and in bad health. He gave me all of the material he has accumalated over the years. It is info on the Pitts, Nix, Donald, Powell, Knight, Jefcoat and a few others. I have been trying to go throught the papers and photos, but it is a slow process for me. I am a pastor and my time is limited. I have not been able to locate the father of Jennings Nix at this time. I do have several wills that I am wading through. Some of the copies are not very good. I have an affidavitt made by Colon (Pinkie) King for Choctaw money in 1913. She was a granddaughter of Thomas. She listed the date of Thomas' death as being in 1828. I also have a list of Nix Ancestors compiled by John A. Ezell in 1964. It lists the descendants for John Daniel Nix III, b 1858. He lists 5 brothers and 1 sister, Mary Ann Elizabeth b June 4, 1843. He also listsOn half brother and 5 half sisters. He lists his grandparents as being Berry Jennings Nix, b Jan 13, 1820 and his grandmother as Malitia Ann Morgan. I have some pictures of John D and Mary Ann family if you are interested. I apologize for this being so long. I hope we may one day trace everyone back to their legal ancestors. Sincerely,
Robert Pitts
