The Liberty Independence Nixon I am talking about is the child born to Elliott Nixon during period 1820-1825 and identified by name in the book THE EARLY HISTORY OF LIMESTONE CO by Capt. R. A. McClellan as a grandson of Frank Nixon.

Elliott Nixon moved to Hardeman Co. Tenn late 1833 or early 1834.

L.I. Nixon, of Bolivar, Tenn. married Margaret Caroline Beckham Feb. 20, 1845 in Limestone Co. Ala.

Liberty I. Nixon was listed in the 1850 census along with wife Margaret and 3 children. He was listed in all the census from 1850 -1900.

He and Margaret resided on the same farm for most of their 45 years together and had 12 children They had 33 grandchild children, none of whom were named Liberty Independence Nixon. I have not researched any of Liberty Independence Nixon's uncles so have no information on the "many Liberty Independence Nixons".

The life of Liberty Independence Nixon is well documented in the Limestone Co Archives The index for period 1818-1918 list the name Liberty Independence,Liberty I. or L. I. Nixon 50 times. Microfilmed newspaper articles for period 1870-1900 cotain actions of L.I. Nixon

In none of the articles mentioned above were listed were the name of James Monroe Liberty Independence Nixon or James Momroe Nixon.

The names James Monroe and Liberty Independence were first combined in 1978 which means he couldn't have been listed because he had not been invented during the first 100 years of Limestone Co. History. James Monroe Nixon, being a lad of about5 years of age was in the family that Frank moved to Shelby Co Tenn. and there is no indication that he ever returned to Ala.

I, along with you am confused, but in a different manner.

I am confused because so many people ignore overwhelming information and attempt to "defend their position" with such claims as Margaret Caroline Nixon gave birth to a son at 76 years of age.

I have just started researching the 'NIXON's in our family. The oldest we have is of a Reuben Nixon born in 1796 in Northamptonshire, England. We know of at least three of his siblings (Robert, John and Samuel). We also know of his wife and children and grandchildren through our ancestor, his son Edward Reuben b. 1835 in Northamptonshire (who married Sarah Capes also from England). He eventually left for New Zealand where he had his children. One of those went to pan for gold in Alaska, ended up marrying around 60 years of age to a woman in Seattle and had their only child, my mother-in-law Alice Mary. Do you know if you have any of this part of the family in your database. Do you have any recommendations on who may? Thank you for any and all help you can provide! Kristin

I'm a 5th generation Texas Nixon. My Great Great Grandfather was Robert Nixon and he came in a covered wagon from N.C. to Texas around 1850. He was a son of Zacariah Nixon.

There are many of us here, many. Robert had 17 children. Some of his brothers followed him here from N.C., further increasing our numbers.

Re: Jonathon Nixon and Mary Bently

There is confusing and conflicting information re Jonathan Nixon and Mary Bently that I have found searching a multitude of claimed family trees on Ancestry.com. Many have shown a Mary Searitt as an alternate spouse. Part of the problem is that there are several Jonathan Nixons in the colonies before 1776. In my own line, I have been able to eliminate the claim that my Jonathan was from the Inniskillen and Yorkshire but have substantial evidence that he and Mary Sherrat were from Leek in Staffordshire and married in Prince Georges Co, Md on 29 July 1738 totally destroying the claims of many that he had married a Mary Bently or Bentley. While it is still possible that some Jonathan Nixon married a Mary B., I have found little such evidence in my own search. I am happy to forward to anyone the details of this search.

Jonathan Nixon 1700s in PG Maryland (Errors Found)

A discussion about the (at least) four Jonathan Nixons resident in Maryland prior to 1776.

Introduction: There are conflicting genealogical claims that arise from mixing facts between (at least) four different Jonathan Nixons who are known or are thought to have been resident in Maryland prior to 1776. For convenience, these will be referred to as Jonathan A, B, C, or D. The results of my search indicate that claims that the Jonathan Nixon who married Mary Bently/Mary Searitt was born in Ireland are in error. Therefor the parents of the Jonathan Nixon who was born in Ireland are not the parents of the Jonathan Nixon who married on 29 July 1738. Further, that claims that he married Mary Bently are in error. And the last conclusion is that the surname of the Mary that he married is not Searitt but is Sherrat.

Jonathan Nixon A. Up till now, apparently the best documented Jonathan Nixon is the one born of George Nixon and Elizabeth Arnold.and who married Nancy Sarah Pugh. He is also the grandson of William Nixon and Sarah Boels. Some internet family trees disagree but these can be shown to err. The marriage was in about 1774 in Augusta County, Virginia While his birth is stated as 1752/53 in Frederick Co, Maryland, his marriage was in Virginia and he resided first in Virginia after this marriage, then in Pennsylvania before returning to Virginia (West Virginia) by 1787 where he lived near Booth's Creek until his death on 4 July 1799 at age 45. Among his children was a Jonathan who was born about 1794.

Jonathan Nixon B. An Irish immigrant from Enniskillen, this Jonathan is one who has been most often confused. Most seem to agree that he came with his brothers George and John "about 1757" George and John settled in Loudoun County, Virginia while Jonathan is said to have settled in Poolesville, Fredrick County, Maryland. This location is across the Potomac from Leesburg, Loudoun County. The parents of this Jonathan were George Nixon and Mary Janney. Again, some internet family trees disagree. It is this Jonathan who is likely to be confused with Jonathan Nixon C. Woodburn, the Nixon plantation was about 5 miles WSW of Leesburg. Poolesville is about 10 miles ENE of Leesburg. It is not proved that this Jonathan settled there. St John Church is about 20 miles due north of Poolesville.

Jonathan Nixon C. This is the Jonathan who married Mary in Prince Georges, St John, Maryland on 29 July 1738. Mary has been given several surname variations in the internet family trees. The record of marriage Maryland Marriage Records, 1634-1777 show the following: "Nixon, Jonathan , 29 July 1738 , Mary Searitt : both parties were late of Leek in the County of Staford Shire, Eng." This statement made at the time of marriage is the only evidence until now that I have found that suggests Jonathan Nixon C. might have been born someplace near Leek, Staffordshire, England. Most internet familly trees attribute the birthplace of this Jonathan as being Enniskillen, Ireland or just plain Ireland. One or two trees cite birthplace as Yorkshire England. However, the Irish immigrant Jonathan Nixon seems not to have arrived in Maryland until about 19 years after this recorded marriage. Two facts which support the conclusion that Jonathan Nixon C is not Jonathan Nixon B is that a Mary Searitt immigrated in 1738. ["Mary Searitt Year: 1738 Place: Maryland Source Publication Code: 6157.35 Primary Immigrant: Searitt, Mary] This is before Jonathan Nixon B's arrival in Maryland. The logic is that she immigrated with the intent to marry Jonathan Nixon C and that they had perhaps known each other in England. The second fact is that a Jonathan Nixon of Frederick County named the first property he purchased in Maryland "Leek". On 8 February, 1764 in Frederick County, 306 acres, as reported in Settelers of Maryland, 1679-1783, PG 487. This source reports other purchases for a Jonathan on 4 Apr 1766 in "PG" and 7 June 1771 in "Fdk" PG would be Prince Georges Co and Fdk would be Frederick County. The land purchased in 1766 was known as "Poor Stoney Hill". We can eliminate all other Jonathan Nixon's as purchaser because Jonathan Nixon C.'s daughter Elizabeth devised part of "Poor Stoney Hill" to her sister Mary on 24 April 1794. Note: Frederick Co. in 1748 was taken from the Northwest section of Prince Georges' Co. then was divided in 1776 into Frederick and Montgomery Counties Elizabeth Nixon devises part of "Poor Stony Hill" to her sister, Mary Nixon Becraft, 24 Apr 1794. Source: Becraft Family of Maryland This fact further identifies the Jonathan Nixon who made the land purchases as the Jonathan who married Mary on 29 July 1738. What I found today in "British Roots of Maryland Families." Robert Barnes . (1999) is below.

"THE NIXON FAMILY
1. Josua Nixon of Leek, Staffordshire m. Mary (N) and was the father of (IGI): Joshua bapt. 15 Nov 1706 and Jonathan Nixon, bapt. 29 Oct. 1708
2. Jonathan Nixon, son of Joshua Nixon and Mary was bapt 29 Oct 1708 at Leek, Staffordshire, and married Mary Sherrat on 29 July 1738 at St John's Piscataway Parish, PG Co'
John and Mary were the parents of (IGI, PGKG): Joshua, b. 1 Sep 1747, Mary, b. 17 May 1750, Richard, b. 6 May1752; Jonathan, b. 6 May 1754; Elizabeth, b. 19 Apr 1756; and Amey, b. 9 May 1763. "
All names above are shown under an index in the book on page 596 refering to page 331. 638 is the internet page on VitalRecords. I believe Sherrat to be the correct version of Mary's surname because it is a well documented surname around Leek at that time while Searitt is not to be found.

I am open to proof(s) that I am wrong in this conclusion.

That is what I am trying to find out! The information that I am working with clearly shows that Jonathan Nixon emmigrated to the colony of Virginia sometime after his birth but before 1730. The best sources say that his birth was in "Yorkshire". He died in either 1794 or 1799. I have both dates as possible. The record is mixed on his spouse. One source suggests that he married a Mary Bently in Yorkshire and they would have emmigrated together. The other source says that he married Mary Searitt (or a variable of that name) on 29 July 1738 in St Johns Church in Prince Georges County, Maryland. There is also an immigration record of a Mary Searitt arriving in Maryland in 1738. I suspect these two incidents are related but no proof. An interesting annotation to the marriage record: ". . .both parties were late of Leek in the County of Staford Shire, Eng." And than, Bob, is all the relevant information that I have on Jonathan Nixon! He would have been born between 1700 and 1720. Oh, he does name one of his sons John. Thanks for the quick response.

I'm looking for information regarding the Brewer family or the Nixon Family of St. John New Brunswick circa 1837.

Thomas Nixon was a ships captain, his daughter Lucy Ann Nixon married a Michael Thomas Brewer in about 1837. Michael Died at sea before he met his son by Lucy, also Michael Thomas Brewer. Lucy went on to marry a man named Edwin Flaglor and moved to California in about 1860 with her son Michael.

I've traced the Brewer family back to this dead end and have only names on the Nixon Family. The Flaglors trace pretty easily but I have a dead end in the Brewer line.

Any information about a Nixon family member that married a Brewer around that time would be most useful.

Hi Jana,
I'm a descendant of Benjamin B. Archer and his second wife, Elizabeth Jackson. From information that I received from a Jackson researcher, Benjamin had 2 children with Sarah Nixon. Virginia and Almira. Virginia is older. She is on the 1850 census in Jo Daviess, Illinois, with Elizabeth and her half-siblings. Benjamin married Elizabeth in 1840 so all I know about Sarah is that she died before then. I don't have her DOB either. I've been trying to find where she is buried but so far have been unsuccessful. I think this morning though I found where Almira is buried. If you would like further info, let me know. I also know where Benjamin is buried.
Tina
I don't have anything connecting the Ellis and Nixon families in Limestone Co.

The following info may pose more questions than answers:

According to a local newspaper, A.G. Ellis had been cured of some type disease at a place called Bailey Springs. He bought the place in 1858 and his family still owned it June 12, 1879. Then July 24,1897 another article stated Bailey Springs, and old and favorite resort was operated by W. A. Ellis and Company, proprioters.

About the only thing this proves is that there were people by these names in Limestone Co. on those dates.

Would liked to have had more.

Thank you very much for your input on James Monroe Nixon.

My info on James Monroe Nixon dates back to a book describing an incident in the life of Francis Marion Nixon (Frank) while he was a resident of Limestone Co.Al. This was before 1828 because that was when Frank moved to Shelby Co, Tenn.

The author listed 6 sons of Francis Marion Nixon and James Monroe was one of them.

The siblings listed in some of the websites include names included in the account given before 1828.

A Copy of Family Tree Maker's Geneology Site before 1/11/91 "Descendents of Francis Marion Nixon" in a note for James Monroe Nixon states:"Ilene Flint has James Monroe Nixon's birthdate 1845 , not 1825 like I have. I have entered the James Monroe (b 1845) as unrelated individual.I can merge them later, after I get proof.)" I'm not sure who wrote this entry.

My information has it that Francis Marion and Catherine Elliott Nixon's last son was born in Limestone Co.
Thanks for the head's up. The mother's age was fairly extreme for an 1844 birth. Can you connect the Asa Ellis family with any of your Alabama sources?

I think his parents might have been Francis Marion Nixon and Catherine Elliot, however I do not have first-hand information to support that. The information I have says that there was no record of his family, however on-line genealogy work shows these persons as parents. I do know that James Monroe came to Stephens Co., TX when he was young and lived there and in Palo Pinto, Co. He enlisted in the CSA from Stephens Co. and served for a short time in Co. A, 1st Frontier District. James came to Menard after the War and married his childhood sweetheart. I am not certain this is the person you are looking for, however it might be. Let me know what you think.
