Hi, Does anyone have any information about the family of Charles Noke, born in London, England in 1788. His wifes name was Charlotte and they had 2 daughters (that I know of) Charlotte and Sarah who married brothers from the Rickards family. I think this Charles Noke is related to the Charles Noke and family of Royal Doulton fame. Charles lived and died around Camberwell, Surrey, England. sailed from England in 1917 on the s.s. Dominion. (mother not known, believed to be Mary) Joseph's parents were England Nokes and Ellen (nee Franklin). Frank married Katie Hopkins,( daughter of Charlie and Elvira) they had three boys, George Franklin, Robert Ernest, and Dennis Orland. I am the son of George. Can anyone offer any thing further?

John Nokes of hog Island is my 4th generatiopn grandfather. John was born in Champlain N.Y. and buried in St. Albans VT. Our family still own my 2nd generation granfather house in Swanton,VT. could you tell me the story on how you learned about the spying? Canada is were the awnsers are. I am working on Johns father. If John was born in Champlain N.Y. the his father and mother wre there. I think Iccas Nokes maybe his father.

Oliver C. Nokes - KS Civil War Affidavit

Included in the Civil War Pension records I have for Mason J. Plummer, is a affidavit from Oliver C. Nokes, of Welda, Anderson Co. Kansas.
The Nokes are not of my family lines. I am posting my transcription of the record in hopes it helps someone.

Aug 1883 - Welda, Anderson Co. KS. Affidavit from Oliver C. Nokes.
Oliver C. Nokes, age 58, served in Co. "D", 10th Regt. Kansas Vol. states that on or about the 16th of Dec. 1864 near Nashville, Tenn, Mason J. Plummer incurred a gunshot wound in left thigh between hip and knee joint. Had just made a charge. Was ordered to lie down, then was ordered to rise and charge again and as we raised, he received the shot. Capt. Jones gave us the order. I was by his side and saw it myself. Then on the 10th of April 1865 at Fort Blakely, Alabama, just after the battle of Fort Blakely I saw and visited M.J. Plummer in his tent when he complained very much of pain in the head and inflamed eyes. I also saw him often. We removed to Montgomery, Alabama, He was under treatment by the Regimental Surgeon. From that time till we were discharged at Fort Leavenworth his eyes were inflamed very much. My means of knowing is from observation at the time. The Battle of Ft. Blakely was fought 7 April 1865. Soon after I asked Mason J. Plummer to go and see his brother, he said he could not, his head hurt him. His eyes looked bad then, saw him until we were discharged the 19 day of Sept 1865. He had a wet cloth over his eyes often. I have looked at his eyes often and I told him he would have trouble with them.

I have photographs that belonged to my Great great Grandmother, Anna Jane Long. They are marked as half sisters and brothers. They are either the children of Joseph T. Long and Mary Fordice or the children of Milton McCormick and Almina Nokes. The photos were taken in Illinois, Kansas, Iowa and possibly Missouri. I have posted the photos on my Ancestry family tree. I have a photo of Joseph T. Long and two photos of Almina Nokes Long McCormick posted as well. I am hoping that someone will be able to identify the photos.

Hello,
I still haven't found anyone named Phebe connected to my Evan Nokes. However, I was at the Gwent Records Office in October and found that there were quite a few people named Nokes in the area in the 1800s, so they could all be related, Nokes not being a common Welsh name.

What is the birthdate of Phebe? Evan was born abt 1809 in either Mont or Mon and married in 1834 in Trevethin, Mon. His children were born in that area: Pontypool, Mon, Beaufort, Brec., Risca, Mon. Where did Phebe live? Do you have the names of any other Nokeses?

The names don't sound familiar to me, but I too have just begun to research this family. My Elizabeth Nokes married George Cann in Hollidaysburg, PA. However, I note that your Phoebe was from Montgomeryshire and so was my Evan, so they could be related. I don't think Nokes is a very common Welsh name. Evan was born abt 1809, so they could be siblings or cousins. I haven't gone backwards with the family, only forward from Monmouthshire to PA.
Please let me know if you find a connection! I'll do the same.

I haven't gotten far with this part of my family research.
This is what I have: Phebe Nokes b 3 Nov 1804 in Trehilig, Montgomery, Wales d 13 May 1849 on the Mameluke ship coming from Wales to America, they had arrived and started up the Mississippi River and at St Louis, MO she had died and they buried her on the banks of the Mississippi.
She was married to Thomas E Davies on 26 Feb 1827 in St Marys Parish, Welshpool, Montogomery,Wales
She was the d/o George of Trehilig Nokes and Catherine Parry
George of Trehilig s/o Calverly & Elizabeth (Nokes) Nock
Catherine Parry d/o Henry of Forden Parry & Mary Clark
If this sounds familiar, I also have the names of children & would be glad to share, just let me know. Is your Elizabeth Nokes the same as what I have and married to Calverly?

My ggg grandfather was Evan Nokes b. abt 1809 in Montogomeryshire or Monmouthshire. My g g grandmother was Elizabeth Nokes Cann b. Mar 1836 Pontypool, Mon. Her siblings were Thomas b. Mon., Anne b. Bre, Anthony b. Risca, Mon, and Mary. I have not found a Phebe Nokes. Do you recognize these names?
Evan is on the 1851 Aberystruth census and in 1880 in Blair County, Pennsylvania.
Does Phebe fit into this family?

I find the history of her mother, Catherine Parry, might be interesting also. And would like to find more information on the Parry family also.
These folks are all ancestors of my husband coming through the Thomas Davies.
CALVERLY is as well an ancestor and find almost nothing on this family.
What suggestions would you share with me that I might find more information?
Are you related also.?

Phebe Nokes b 3 Nov 1804 in Trehilig, Montgomery, Wales d ABT 13 May 1849 in St Louis, St Louis Co., MO USA aboard the Mameluke sailing vessel. The dau of George Of Trehilig Nokes & Catherine Parry. She was married to Thomas E Davies b in Lletty, Montgomery, Wales.They married 26 Feb 1827 in St Mary's Parish, Welshpool, Montgomery, Wales.
Thomas was the son of Thomas Davies & Mary Bromwell, he was b in Lletty, Wales.
My records show George of Trehilig was son of CALVERLY b ABT 1741 and Elizabeth (Nokes) NOCK b ABT 1743.
May I ask of you a couple questions? Who was CALVERLY? Is that a surname? Would appreciate information on that. In my records it shows William Nokes was a brother to Phebe.
I would also be interested in knowing the parents names of Thomas Davies.
If you could help me I would be so very greatful and really appreciative.

So was your great-grandfather Charles Morman Nokes born 1853 in Iowa?

My ancestry is from the Leonard Nokes (b1820) line. He named his son (my great-grandfather born 1852)after his brother Rufus James Nokes, your geat-great-grandfather. That is one reason why the Rufus Nokes information is often confusing.

I have all the details for the decendants of the Rufus James Nokes born in 1852 if you want that info.

Do you have info on your great-great grandfather's Rufus James Nokes' family? The only child I have listed is Charles Morman.

Let's compare notes.

Can someone *please* help me place my ancestor Marian or Mary Ann NOKES with the correct parents? Marriage record gives her name as Marian; tombstone as Mary Ann.

Born: 30 Apr 1817 (per Kekoskee, WI, tombstone)
Died: 27 Sep 1864 (per Kekoskee, WI, tombstone)
Married: 16 Dec 1835 to John FADDEN at Highgate, VT (per Highgate town records)
Also married at the same time: Mrs. Eliza NOKES to Mr. John BULSON(?). Relationship between Eliza and Marian unknown. Perhaps Eliza was the widow of one of Marian's brothers.

Virtually all Nokes researchers I have corresponded with list my Marian as a child of William and Mary Almira or Elmira NOKES. However, since William was born in 1807 he could hardly be the parent of a child born in 1817!!

I'm going to list here the children of Mary Ann Nokes and John Fadden because couples routinely named their kids after parents and siblings: Ephraim (b. abt 1836), Sabina (b. abt. 1838), Melinda (b. 1840), James S. (born 1843), Mary L. (b. 1844), Orlando (b. 1847), Emma (b. 1849), Helen (b. 1851), Jacob (b. 1853), Azelina (b. 1855), Julia (b. 1857), Elizabeth (b. 1858), Ida May (b. 1861).

I hope somewhat can shed some light on this mystery. Thank you very much.

Hi have had some correspondence with Lorraine and Sandy about this think you know both of them although am having trouble e mailing Sandy.Am fairly new to this search and only started about 6 months ago.Traced William Nokes from his wifes death Certificate which tied up with details on all your trees.All the information given was new to me and very helpful.The area around Welshpool where they all lived over 200 years ago is less than an hour from me.I have been to area 2 weeks ago took some photos of Berriew and Castle Caereninon Churches I will now go to the relevant Record office to try and find all missing info.I will e mail you directlyi if that is ok Geoff

I am trying to trace James NOKES, who was believed to be born about 1900. In 1947 he was a science teacher at Penistone Grammar School, Yorkshire. Any information on his parents and/or birthplace/date would be gratefully received.
