Two biographies of Nolan have appeared in book form:
Nolan of Balaclava (Also published under the title "Louis Edward Nolan and his influence on the British Cavalry" by Colonel H. Moyse-Bartlett c. 1971
Messenger of Death by David Buttery c. 2008.

These would probably provide the best clues to family connections.

hello, i have just begun my search. when cleaning out my parents attic, we came across an old picture of harriet fast nolan and leander nolan. i would say they were in their 50's. they would be on my grandmothers side... her name was Jessie I Ailes maiden name Mauller. I do not know her parents name as I have only just started. I would be interesting in learning any information you have on these two and their daughter Emily. Much of my family is gone now and I really wished I would have started this sooner. Any help or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

jennifer ailes badore

Trying to identify his wife, Mary, born 1860 in New York. Seems they were married about 1886 and had a daughter Elizabeth abt 1887. In the 1910 census there are two sister-in-laws with them: Frances and Katherine. Are the 3 sisters the daughters of Irish Immigrants Michael Sheils and Bridget Welsh, all born in Sullivan County?

I am trying to piece together all the Sheils descended from John and Hannorah who emigrated from County Roscommon. would be happy to share what I have.

I have George b. 1846 in Indiana (both parents from Ohio) married to May b. 1853 in Ohio (both parents born in Ohio) with the last name Noland - living in Royal Center, IN. in 1880 with their children Harvey, Earnest, Pearl, and Charles. (I found a Mary Daggett marrying a George K Nolan in Cass county, IN Dec 24 1870.) Somewhere between 1900-1910 they changed their name to Nolan.
Hey, if everyone did a 5 year response time, life would seem to go much, much slower!

From what I can tell, you hooked up pretty well! From what I know, if you have an Irish man/woman, and you have the county that they are from (I see yours...), and the year that they came over, then you are ready to go! If you knock over those two stepping stones, Ireland is easy!

Nolans of Wexford / Enniscorthy

Hi All,
Researching Nolans and am desperate to confirm something in Ireland for Thomas Nolan (b. 1861) who married Catherine (or Kate) McCabe (b 1860) - they married and had two kids in Wexford/Enniscorthy possibly before emigrating to North Wales (Flint). If I could find their marriage and baptisms of first two kids (William 1881 and John 1883) and something that confirmed the area they were from I would be delighted.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin

Francis James Nolan III 1957-2009

Francis James Nolan III 52, died suddenly in an automobile accident in Marin County on July 28. Born in Massachusetts, he had lived in California since 1973. A graduate of UC Berkeley, he was better known as "Jim." A computer programmer at the non-profit Vision Service Plan, he lived in Rancho Cordova. Jim was preceded in death last July by his beloved older brother, Stephen Nolan. Remembering Jim with love are his parents, Rosemary and Frank; his sisters, Faith, Betsy, Dierdre and Ann; and his brothers-in law Bron Hafner, Kevin Wood, and Chris Scheley. Jim's loving attention to his nieces and nephews, Rion, Elizabeth, Katherine, Katilyn, C.J., Mary Rose, Frances, Christine, and Nolan was a source of great satisfaction to both uncle and kids. Some might consider Jim old-fashioned. His points of reference had deep and simple roots: love your neighbor, give something back. If he thought about the government he weighed it against the justice it dispensed, the ethics it applied. If he considered our national preoccupations, he was puzzled. Oddly enough he was never judgmental about individuals. He cut everyone a lot of slack. So he was surrounded by people who loved him. His serious side never dampened his astonishing comic sense. An accomplished athlete, he had increasingly severe health problems in recent years but he finessed them with a stunning sense of humor and courage. There was no getting through a conversation with Jim without the best laugh you'd had in a long time. Imagine a big man with a wicked grin talking to God and you're looking at Jim Nolan. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, August 8, 10:30 a.m., St. Mary's Church, 2039 Mt. Diablo Blvd, Walnut Creek. In lieu of flowers donations may go to the charity of your choice.

Published in San Francisco Chronicle from August 6 to August 7, 2009

Mary Nolan(d) 1877 Belfast

Mary Kathleen Nolan(d)born Aug 14, 1877 was one of a family of 7 children born to Jack and Jane (Jewell) Nolan in Belfast, Northern Ireland. At the age of 11 she accompanied an uncle to Montreal Canada, where she made her home until she was 18 years old, and then she moved to Vermont, USA. She married Chancy E. Armstrong of Newport Center, VT on July 26th, 1898. Mary Nolan Armstrong died in 1943 in Vermont. According to her obituary she joined the Church of England "at a young age", also according to census documents her mother was born in England.

On the off chance that she may have named children after her siblings or other family members, here children were named William, Levina, George Lawrence, Howard, Warren, Elizabeth and Edison.

ANY help would be appreciated.

Looking for family of GGG Grandmother Mary Nolan Shane b. 1790s. Variant spellings for Shane in US Census, Delaware County, Iowa are Shahan (1850), Shehan (1860) and Shane (1870ff). Mary Shane's monument, Calvary Cemetery, Cascade, Dubuque County, Iowa reads 'native of Limerick'. Husband's name unknown as she is widowed by 1850. Children include: Johanna Shane Quirk, Robert N. (believed to be Nolan as there are several generations of Robert Nolan Shanes) and Daniel Shane - all b. Ireland 1820s. Family settled first in Quebec about 1830, probably Quebec City as daughter Johanna was educated by the Ursalines.

I've only just noticed your post even though it was a long time ago!
I am also researching Nolans from County Carlow and have gone as far back as John Nolan (1832 - 1893) who moved to Wheelton in Lancashire during the 1870s. He married Catherine and had 4 children Patrick (1852), Elizabeth (1855), Ellen (1857) and James 1864. All moved to Englandwith him but Patrick married in Bagenalstown in 1874.

Not sure if my John isthesameas yours or not.
BROKE HIS NECK - Yesterday, as James NOLAN, proprietor of the 26 Mile House, on the Sonora road, was driving home from Knight's Ferry, he missed the break, in an attempt to put his foot upon it, and falling over, his head struck the ground, the concussion instantly killing him, it is believed by a dislocation of the neck joint. Mr. NOLAN was 39 years of age, a native of the county Roscommon, Ireland, and leaves a wife and 3 young children. He had for a number of years been a resident of this county and bears an excellent reputation. At the moment the accident which caused his death happened, 2 ladies from the house of Mr. BLODGETT were observing Mr. NOLAN and after his fall, not seeing him rise again, they at once went to the place where he lay and found him dead.

Hi, I am probably no immidiate relation, but I was wondering how you knew your Margaret Nolan was from Tipperary? My Great Great Grandfather James Nolan born 1841, around Tipperary/Kilkenny. Carrick On Suir I think. His parents were Thomas/Margaret Nolan. His sibblings were Richard, Margaret and Bridget. They all would have been close in age. Somewhere between 1840 and 1848. My GG Grandfather James Nolan came to USA in 1863, fought in Civil War and settled in Kansas City, Missouri. I have a couple letters. One from his mother in Ireland. They were from Cregg Road. Any of this sound familiar, please let me know. Thanks, BJ Maguire

Seeking family of Patrick Nolan born 1868 Chicago Illinois, married to Mary Barrett born 1870 Westport Ireland who had a daughter Anna Nolan 31 Dec 1897.

Some years ago (before computers), when my mother was working on our family history, a fellow employee left this birth certificate with her to see what she could find on the family. Before my mother was able to find anything out the lady quit working and today we still have the documents. I would like to find family related to Anna Nolan and her parents to get the document to them. If you have these people in your line and would like to obtain this document please contact me.

Carol
