My g-g grandfather was Henry or Harry Nolan. he was born in Liverpool England 1853. Harry and his wife Mary B. (Walsh) Nolan, lived on Mifflin Street in Philadelphia, in 1880. At that time they had 2 children: John Anthony (my great grandfather) b. June 1876, and his brother Harry b. 1878. Henry or Harry died July 14, 1890 at his residence on Mifflin Street. Mary went on to marry a Jacob Ruth. I don't think they had any children. The info I have is these are Henry and Mary's children:
John Anthony, b. 1876
Harry, b. 1878
Kate, b. 1880
Mary, b. 1882
Lucy, b. 1884
Annie, b. 1888

If this family is familiar to anyone - please let me know.
Cathy Thompson

ELEANOR NOLAN, KILLINANE/BAGENALSTOWN, CO. CARLOW

Hi..I am trying to trace the parents and/or siblings of Eleanor Nolan, born c. 1807 in Killinane/Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow. She may have had a brother, Bryan, because a man of this name was a sponsor at the christening of one of her children. Eleanor married John Kelly (born c 1802) at St. Andrews RC Church in Bagenalstown on 27 February 1827, and had Moley (Molly?), Mary, James, John, Henry, Thomas, Eleanor and Margaret between 1827 and 1843. If the Irish naming tradition was followed, Moley/Molly was her mother´s name, and John was her father´s. Does any of this information ring a bell with anyone?? Thanks in advance.
Hi,

I'm looking for information about my great aunt Eleanor Crispin Nolan b. February 27, 1927 in Peoria, AZ.

She left AZ to get married in the late 40's early 50's. As far as I know she was an opera singer. Eleanor Nolan has been missing for the last 60 years and I am trying to locate any information about her.

Her sister Diana (the last survivor of her family) is still alive. The whole family would like to know what happened to her.

Longevity in the females runs in that family and it's possible she is still alive.

Help!

~ Martyn Valenzuela

p.s. We/She is descended from Gervais Nolan of Quebec Canada (1792-1857)AKA Gervacio Nolan
Denis Nolan Kerry/Cork 1940's

Im trying to find more information on my grandfather and relevant family - unfortunately he died when my dad was approximately 4 years of age between 1943 and 1948. It stated on my dads (Michael Nolan) birth certificate he was from Knockawaddera which only reference was in SW Cork but only place now that still exists is spelt Knockawaddra. He was a labourer and is known that he hung himself. It is said he was only young when he killed himself probably between the ages of 20 and 30.

He married my Nan Margaret O'Connor who was originally from Gneevguilla - marriage date unknown. My Dad was born in Meenganaire, Knocknagoshel (closest big town was CastleIsland) along with my uncle John. It states however that the births and deaths registry that is on the Certificate is Killarney number 453 With WM Prendiville being the registrar.

It is known he had a brother Andy or Andrew Nolan who had a daughter Jane who is now living in the USA - am currently trying to get a copy of her birth certificate to trace her parents and possibly work back from that.

My Nan - Margaret Nolan then went on to marry a Jeremiah Cremins after that - anywhere after the death of my grandfather and had approximately another 6 children. They lived in Meenganaire with his death in approximately 1992, she died now only 2 years ago at the age of 93.

Unfortunately that is all the information I have as my nan did not like to recall any stories of my grandfather and didnt really remember much information. If anyone could help me retrace I would be very grateful.

Thanks,
Mike Nolan.

Thomas Nolan (b1842) - Sydney, Australia

Hi List!

I have been searching unsuccessfully for information about my Thomas Nolan, b 27 Aug 1842, in Bankstown, now a suburb of Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Thomas' birth certificate shows father Christopher Nolan and mother Mary Edwards.

There are no records of a marriage in NSW for Christopher and Mary, but I have not been able to search other states (Vic, QLD, etc) for evidence of a marriage elsewhere. However, FreeBDM (UK) shows a marriage of a Christopher and Mary in LANCASHIRE, though I can not find any evidence of them in any UK Census.

Is there anyone on the list searching for Nolans in Australia, and hopefully, searching for MY Nolans?

Megan in Sydney

Looking for brother/children of James Joseph Nolan, b 28Dec1893 in Jefferson City, MO. Parents were Thomas M. Nolan and Anna (nee Mooney?) James apparently had at least one brother, "Patrick?". James married Edith McCarthy in Shawneetown, IL in 1937, but he was previously married to a "Marie?", and he had 2 sons and 1 daughter from this previous marriage. We think they were living in St. Louis in the 1920's, and that James worked in a shoe factory. We are looking for these step-brothers and sisters.

Julia Nolan Breese - WI / IL / IN

I’m new to the Nolan list, and I’m trying to find some information on my great-grandmother, Julia Nolan Breese. She was born in Wisconsin abt 1864. My search, however, has come up with at least four Julia Nolans born in the state in that timeframe, and I’m not sure which one is her. I suspect it is Julia F. Nolan, whose family had relocated to Chicago by the time of the 1870 census. My reasoning is that my great-grandfather, Francis A. “Frank” Breese, was born and raised in Chicago, so that puts her in the same locale for them to meet and marry abt 1889. If I have the right Julia, her parents were William and Catharine, both born in Ireland abt 1836 and 1845 respectively. I have not been able to discover anything more about them, and neither appears in the 1900 census.

Whichever Julia it was, in 1896 she and Frank settled in Medaryville, Pulaski, Indiana. Between 1910 and 1918 they moved to Gary, Lake, Indiana. She died abt 1935, probably in Gary. She had 5 children – Harry L. (adopted), Julia (died as a child), Robert Alfred (my grandfather), William Stephen and Elvaretta.

If anyone can help me, even by eliminating one of the “Wisconsin Julias” from contention, I would be most appreciative.

Bob Schiller
Searching for Timothy Nolan

Hi all,

I am researching my husbands family. I am looking for Timothy Nolan born 1838 in Ireland. Sometime before 1857 he moved to Salford Lans in England his occupation was a painter (house). In 1857 he married Margaret White also born 1838 in Ireland. On the marriage cert. Timothy's father is listed as Laurence and Margaret's as Thomas. Family legend has it that he and Margaret travelled to the US where he was drafted or joined up in the Civil War, Margaret went back to England and Timothy later deserted the army and went back to England. Timothy and Margaret had 7 seven children that I am aware of, Mary Ann b 1858, Margaret b 1860, Laurence b 1864, John b 1866, Teresa 1868, Catherine b 1870 and James b 1875. On the English census's all the children are listed as being born in Salford. James is my husbands GGrandfather. Don't know the county that Timothy was born in but Margarets family where in Queens county in the 1830's

Patrick and Elizabeth Nolan, LaSalle Co. Il.

As the story was told to me my gg-grandfather John Nolan and his wife Sarah (O'Connor) Nolan had emigrated to this country and settled in Chicago, year unknown, (1870's). My g-grandfather, Michael Joseph Nolan was born in 1877 in Peoria, Il. He had siblings both younger and older than him. I have a copy of the 1900 fed census with John and Sarah Nolan and family. I'm not 100% sure this is my Nolan family ( I have not substantiated it completely) but there are two sisters, Kate (Katherine) and Elizabeth that I have obits for that tie them together. Point is, this census report has John and Sarah being born in Ireland and all children born in Il.. I have not been able to find any relations of John having lived in this country, so a CT. connection is unknown. Several of their children may have passed away at a young age. There was a son, John, born about 1885 that I have not been able to track down.
My g-grandfather, Michael Joseph for reasons unknown had moved to LaSalle Co.. He met and married Margaret McCarthy in 1901. They lived in LaSalle Co. until about 1909 then moved to Dixon, Il., Lee Co. where they lived out their lives.
I do hope that this helps.
Hi,

I'm looking for any information regarding John Thomas Nolan or John Benjamin Nolan. John Thomas Nolan was born around 1891 and married Flora Isaacson in 1915. They had 2 sons (that I know of) named John Nolan and Charles Henry Nolan born in 1916 and 1920. I believe he may have been a soldier during the first world war.

John Benjamin Nolan is the father of John Thomas Nolan. I believe both may have been born in Ireland, moved to the Hammersmith area of London some time around 1900.

Thanks

James D. Nolan married a Mary in SC and had son William in 1822. I am looking for info of his birth, arrival in the US and possible indenture survitude in SC. At some point after 1822 they moved to Wilson, TN. James died in 1844 and Mary died in 1851. They left Patience, Lydia Ann, Robert A.( MyGGF) and James Tiry and William. The Nolan spelling varied with who they spoke to. I have found Nolin, Nowlin, Nolen and other variations. The names of David and Daniel Nolan and a Temperance Nolen Rutledge may be associated with the family. Robert A. Nolan had several children and branches of his family live in TX and FL under the nolan name. James Tiry married a Lady named Case in Giles TN and I have not been able to locate his childrens families. One of his children is buried in Giles TN. Any help concerning this family would be appreciated.

Amended request: Edward Nolan, b. 1874, Will County, Illinois, USA, assistance needed, please

Edward Nolan, born in 1874, was my great grandfather. He married Mary Ring and they were the parents of Hazel Loretta Nolan, my paternal grandmother. I have a photo of him, along with Hazel and her son, my father, William Edward Dunn and me. It’s four generations of the family, and the caption on the photos says I’m 8 months old, so this picture would be from 1941.

A helpful person gave me some feedback when I first posted this request, and as a result I looked up Edward and Mary in the Illinois marriage records. I could find no listing for an Edward Nolan marrying a Mary Ring. However, I did find this one: NOLAN, FRANCIS E. RING, MARY E. 09/21/1898. If Francis E is Francis Edward, he may have opted to go by Edward, and this could be them.

I've found him in the 1900 U.S. federal census, living in Joliet, Illinois. Also in his household are his daughter Hazel, listed as age 9 months, and his sister-in-law, Sadie Ring. Conspicuous by her absence is Mary Ring Nolan. Edward is listed as being widowed, which explains Mary's absence.

His job is listed as "shearer - tin plate", and his parents were born in Ireland. Question: Because Hazel was born August 31st, 1899, and the census was dated June 15th, 1900 – when she was just 9 months old – I’m wondering if Hazel's mother died giving birth to her. It seems likely, but is an open question.

An Edward Nolan shows up in later censuses, possibly having had two different wives, and could be him. It makes sense that he would have remarried later, for he was just 26 years old in 1900 when he was widowed. Here are some clues:

1. Hazel lived with a relative from an unknown starting date unil her marriage in 1917.

2. Hazel's 1917 marriage license application said her father's occupation was "machinist", which gives us one way of identifying him in the censuses.

3. Another clue is that before her death, Hazel’s daughter, my aunt Rita Jane Dunn Tumbiolo, mentioned that she had a cousin. I don't know if the cousin was on the Dunn side or the Nolan side, but it tells me Hazel and/or Edward had – or have – more family out there somewhere.

So, with those clues in mind, consider the following.

In the 1910 census an Edward Nolan, machinist at a mill, parents born in Ireland, was living with the Samuel McKeand family in Joliet. He's recorded as being a brother-in-law and there are two more Nolan children listed, shown as niece and nephew of the McKeands. Edward is again listed as being widowed. Could he be widowed again, from wife number two, the mother of the two Nolan kids? Or perhaps the two kids weren’t his and he’s still widowed from the first marriage. It’s an open question.

In addition to the McKeand family, the census shows the following in the household:
• Edward Nolan - 37
• Agnes Nolan - 5
• Bernard Nolan - 4

If this is him and he remarried and fathered two more kids, it appears he’d been widowed again. Hazel's not listed with him in 1910, so if it is him and he had remarried and had other kids, which is a one possibility, I have to wonder why he didn't "reclaim" her from the relative with whom she was living.

The 1920 census shows an Edward Nolan, Joliet, machinist at a mill, parents born in Ireland, listed as follows:
• Edward Nolan – 45
• Margaret Nolan – wife (Number 3? Number 2?)
• Agnes Nolan – 15
• John B Nolan 13 (possibly John Bernard to match the 1910 Bernard?)
• Harald Joseph Nolan – 12 (sic)
• Eillen Nolan – 8 (sic)
• Patrica Nolan – 1 (sic)

By 1920 Hazel had gotten married and the census shows her living in Chicago with her husband Eugene Dunn, my grandfather, so she wouldn't be with Edward at that point.

Bottom line: Both of these later Edward Nolans show up in the same area, are the right age, same occupation as Hazel's father, with parents born in Ireland, but with issues that make me question whether they are the same man. If these three aren't all the same person, the number of similarities is remarkable for what would have been a relatively small area at the time.

I have a lot of info about three generations of Edward's descendants in Hazel's line, but have reached a blockade regarding ancestors. Does anyone have info to share about this family?

Patrick Dunn
Edward Nolan, born abt 1874, Joliet, Will County, Illinois, USA, assiatance needed, please

Edward Nolan was my great grandfather. He married Mary Allen Ring and they were the parents of Hazel Nolan Dunn, who was my grandmother.

He was listed as a machinist in one family record and the 1900 census says he was a "shearer - tin plate", so it appears that he may have worked in a steel mill then. He was living in Joliet, Illinois, USA, at that time and the census shows that also living in that household were Hazel, age 9 1/2, and Sadie Ring, his sister-in-law, age 19. Conspicuous by her absence was his wife, Mary Allen Ring Dunn; I don't know the reason for her absence, but she may have been deceased.

He was born in Illinois and the 1900 census shows that both his parents were born in Ireland.

I have a lot of info about his descendants, but have reached a blockade regarding ancestors. Does anyone have any more info about this family?

- Patrick Dunn

Grandmother Ada Nolen Parks - Caledonia Mississippi

Trying to find any information on my grandmother Ada Lou Ollie Nolan Parks or Ada Luella Nolen Parks. I'm not sure of the correct name or the spelling. She is suppose to have had a sister named Effie. She married a William Arthur Parks. They lived in Caledonia Mississippi. They are buried in Egger Cemetary off of Wolfe Road. Any information anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. I know nothing about her side of the family. I was told she was married at the age of thirteen. William was nineteen. They came from Alabama. Winston County I think. Thank you in advance for your help.

His name may be Albert or Joseph or Patrick Nolan (really narrows it down, doesn't it!), and he's probably from the Peterborough, Ontario, Canada area. My grandmother didn't seem to know for certain what his name was, when he was born, etc.

Are there any Nolans from the Peterborough area here? I'd love to get in touch with some relatives.

Carlow.
Bridget was known to be living in "Claremont Road" in Dublin in 1904 .

I know nothing about my NOLAN side of the family, but I am guessing that they also came from Co. Carlow
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone ?

NOULEN ANCESTORS IN LOUISIANA

THE NAME NOULEN IS UNUSUAL, WAS IT ORIGINALLY NOLAN OR DID IT EVOLVE FROM SOME OTHER SIMILAR NAME? MY NOULEN KIN ARE FIRST FOUND IN CONCORDIA PARISH, LA. ABT. 1800 +/- 20 YEARS. JAMES AND ELIZABETH NOULEN WERE LAND HOLDERS AND UNLESS RECIEVED THROUGH LAND GRANTS WERE PEOPLE OF SOME MEANS. THEIR CHILDREN, ALL BORN IN LA., WERE DR. ELIAS T. NOULEN, B. 1815, M. ELIZABETH RUCKER, OF THE CHICAGO AND NATCHEZ RUCKERS, FRANCES NOULEN, B. 1817, M. CHARLES J. GAY FROM JAMESTOWN,VA., MAHALA ANN NOULEN, B. 1820, M. JOHN H. BROWN AND THEN M. EARL STEELE, AND JAMES A. NOULEN, B. 1830, M. PHEOBE ANN OLIVER DIXON OF NATCHEZ, MS.

JAMES AND ELIZABETH NOULEN HAD TO COME FROM SOMEWHERE. TO MY KNOWLEDGE THE ONLY PLACE IN THE US AROUND 1800 THAT HAD A FEW NOULENS WAS IN THE NORTH EAST, AROUND NEW JERSEY. OF COURSE THEY COULD HAVE BEEN EMIGRANTS FROM ENGLAND OR FRANCE OR ELSEWHERE.

I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY EXCHANGE OF INFO ON THE NOULEN LINE, MISSING RELATIVES THAT WENT SOUTH, NAME ORIGIN, HISTORY. I HAVE A FAIRLY GOOD RECORD OF THE DECENDANTS OF JAMES AND ELIZABETH NOULEN TO SHARE WITH ANYONE INTERESTED.

Old Photo of Lizzie Nolan - Massachusetts

I recently purchased a bunch of old photos while visiting Illinois. One photo shows a young woman and is labeled on the front "Lizzie Nolan". The photo was taken at the Warren Studio in Boston, Massachusetts, likely in the 1880s.

Attached is a copy of the photo. If this is one of your ancestors, please contact me.

Nolan's in Pennsylvania and Minnesota

All my Nolan information is on:
www.nolanfamilyhistory.com

I am looking to fill in some gaps in my Nolan Family Tree. My connection is to Matthew and Patrick Nolan arriving in America in the mid 1840's. Wexford or Waterford. They had relatives in the Philadelphia area.

Matthew Nolan married Mary (Shea) and raised his family in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania with two sons James S. and John Nolan ending up in Minnesota. James S. Nolan married Ellen Sexton. John Nolan married Annie McCarthy.

Patrick Nolan married Ellen (O'Niell) and moved to the Wabasha County in Southeastern Minnesota in the late 1850's.

Both Matthew and Patrick Nolan had large families. Many of the children had large families. So on and so on.

Thanks
