Philip Noland Sr Died 1794 and Philip Noland Jr Died 1784/1785

In order to correct some misinformation about Philip Noland Sr. and Philip Noland Jr. of Loudoun Co., VA, I have included wills and deeds that clearly show that Philip Noland Junior, son of Philip Noland and Elizabeth Awbrey who started Noland's Ferry, died in 1784 or 1785. He died before his father, who clearly died in 1794. The following article listing the sale of the land of Philip Noland Jr. is where some of the misinformation originated:

Virginia Journal & Alexander Advertiser
September 29, 1785

AGREEABLE to the last will of Philip Noland, jun., deceased, will be told to the highest bidder on the premises, about two miles and an half above Noland's
Ferry, on the fifteenth day of October next, if fair, if not the fair day, the said Noland's dwelling Plantation, containing at least 213 acres. This plantation, as to soil, water, meadow, and orchard, is equal to any land of the quanity on Potomack river; the orchard has made 3000 gallons of cyder a year. Said land lies on the river about three quarters of a mile , on which is a dwelling-house, kitchen, meat-house, and a new barn. The isituation of the place is very beautiful and healthy. --The money must be paid as the children come of age; that is in five years one hundred pounds, and one fourth part of the balance in nine years, one fourth inten years, one fourth in eleven years, and one fourth in thirteen years. The purchaser must give bond, with apprved security, for the payment of the money and interest. The interest must be paid annualy, for the support of the children, other - wife the bonds shall be liable to be put in suit for the recovery of the principal and interest. -- On the above land is a fine limestone quarry, within 400 yards of the river, where a large quanity of lime might be made, and if the river should be made navigable, in a little time pay for the land.-- On the same day, at the aforesaid place, will be sold some cattle, horses and hogs; also, some corn, fodder and wheat, on one years credit, giving bond and approved security.
THOMAS NOLAND, Excutor.
September 20, 1785

This article, taken in isolation, may lead some to the wrong conclusion. But, when a study of wills and deeds is made, it clearly shows that the Philip Noland who died in 1784 was the son of Philip Noland and Elizabeth Awbrey, and not the elder Philip. Many people have taken this misinformation and included it in their family trees, confusing this family history for others.

Loudoun Co., VA Deed Book M, pp 53-55
8 Jun 1778 Philip Noland of Loudoun Co., VA to Philip Noland Junr. of same for consideration of moving and natural love and affection for Philip Noland Junr. his son, and 100 pounds, 164 acres joining the main road to Noland's Ferry that Philip Noland bought of Richard Abrial.
Phil.
Alice Nolan was my great, great grandmother on my fathers side. As you said, she married Abraham Fordyce and died in 1880, most likely in Greene county Indiana. She had at least one son named Sanford A. Fordyce who became my great grandfather.

Noland History Questions

This is my first time on an ancestry board. My name is Jennifer Wildhaber, maiden name Noland. My grandmother was Mary Margaret Noland (maiden name Collins) and my grandfather was Edwin E. Noland. They went on to have two children, Judith Ann Noland (my mother) and Robert Noland. All that I know of my grandfather is that he was a twin. My grandmother and grandfather, years ago, owned a few drycleaning businesses in Southern California. I was hoping someone might recognize the name and help me find out some more information on my grandfather's history and family.

Are you familiar with the genealogy work of Edward Ronsheim (1952, Anderson, Indiana)? That may be helpful.

I have George b. 1846 in Indiana (both parents from Ohio) married to May b. 1853 in Ohio (both parents born in Ohio) with the last name Noland - living in Royal Center, IN. in 1880 with their children Harvey, Earnest, Pearl, and Charles. (I found a Mary Daggett marrying a George K Nolan in Cass county, IN Dec 24 1870.) Somewhere between 1900-1910 they changed their name to Nolan. I have the family living in Eel and Lake, Center co, IN also. All 4 generations of this family that I know of worked for the Railroad.

Any information I can get on George or May would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you for your message of the 8th of June on Ancestry. There do not appear to be too many Nolands working on our particular branch so it is especially good to hear from you. The Noland branch of the family is on my husband's side. His line is:

Henry Noland b. 1791 x Mary Ashby b. 1793

Henry Clay Noland b. 21 Sep 1834 x Margaret Josephine Campbell b. 4 May 1835

William Horace Noland b. 31 Jul 1856 x Jennie Wright

Josephine Noland b. 18 May 1901 x Joseph Harold McDonald

James Robert McDonald

We do have quite a bit of material back as far as Henry Clay Noland. There is also extensive research which has been done, and is still actively being done, on the Campbell and Wright lines. However, we have only a little info on Mary Ashby, her brother and her father, and next to nothng on the ancestry of Henry Noland.

It would seem that you and my husband Jim are cousins. The question, of course, is, how close! It should be fun to exchange info. We do have some pictures of Henry Clay, Margaret, William and Jennie and their families as well as some obits. My husband knew his grandmother Jennie and had visited at her home and the homes and ranches of her children. He is really hoping that you will be descended from one of William and Jennie's many offspring as he does remember playing with them.

Again, thanks for your message, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Sharon and Jim McDonald

Re: Philip Noland (Noland's Ferry) of Loundon Co., VA (New Research indicates that he died BEFORE 1794)

No.......this is NOT the Philip Noland that died BEFORE 1794. There are a
lot of Philip's and Pierce's in this NOLAND family. Sometimes it can be
very confusing. Enough to make your head spin. lol The Philip (jr) that
died BEFORE 1794 (act. died 1784) in Loudoun Co., Virginia was born abt.
1718, the son of Philip Noland and Bridgett Carroll. This Philip, Sr. had
a brother by the name of Pierce Noland. Pierce had a son, Charles, b. abt
1748 in Prince Wm. Co., VA., d. 1813 Turo Parrish, Fairfax County, Virginia.
This is where a lot of the early pioneers of Wood County, (West) Virginia
were from, before they migrated west.

Charles Noland married Sallie ?? Their children were
Theopolis
Verlinda
Philip (see below)
Elizabeth
Pierce
Charles
Thomas

Only 3 of Charles' sons (that we know of) migrated first into Wood County,
(West) Virginia by 1820. By 1830 they all moved directly across the Ohio
River into Washington County, Ohio. Thomas's descendants are mostly found
in the Newport Twp., Area. Charles's descendants settled in Belpre, Warren
and Dunham Twp., and Philip's descendants settled in Decatur Twp, All in
Washington County, Ohio.

The Philip Noland that you are refering to is my direct ancestor. He and
his first wife, Elizabeth Awbrey (d/o Francis Awbrey & Francis Tanner) are
my GGG Grandparents. Their children were:
Deliah
William
Charles
Barnabus
Alexander (my line) - Edward, Lawrence, Wm., ME
Elizabeth
Gregory
Sarah
John

After Elizabeth Awbrey Noland died in 1831, Philip married Mercy (Rathbun)
Ingles, widow of John Ingles. I'm currently trying to find her parents.
Gideon Rathbun had a dau. named Mercy, but it's NOT the one that married
Philip Noland.

I have some info on Barnabus Noland. You can use what I have. If you need
sources, just ask. :o)

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Hope this helps.

Debbie Noland Nitsche
Diamonddeb@comcast.net

Washington Co., Ohio Historical & Genealogy Links
http://hometown.aol.com/debnolandnitsche/index.html

Historical Marietta, Ohio on MySpace
http://www.myspace.com/historicalmariettaohio
-- just ran across a portrait of Francis Marion Noland (1785-1873) one of the ten children of James & Barbara Noland and wanted to find out if anyone has photos of other children of that generation? I am most interested in Horatio Rasha Noland, Francis Marion's older brother (b: 1781) but all are of interest.

Thanks!

I have a note I'm following up on...

1785 - George Washingon's Memoirs - George had dinner at the Nolands.

Has anyone found the Source of this reference? If Philip was at dinner then he would have died after dinner. Possibly in 1785.

Thanks for the posting.
No, I haven't found any photos of the children either. However, I descend from STEPHEN NOLAND (1776-1844), another one of James' and Barbara's children. If anyone comes across a photo/portrait of STEPHEN, I would be most interested in getting a copy. If I find any, I'll post a message here, too. Thanks! --STEVE NOLAND

Re: Descendents of, and info on, Henry Noland b 1791 Virginia
