Hi Robert Three,

Sorry couldn’t resist, my brother was a II and we called him Tom two. If your grandfather is still able to communicate and has memories intact I would suggest you run, do not walk, and visit him with a tape or digital recorder, better yet a video camera in hand and get him to talk about his youth, parents, siblings, female family member maiden names who married into the family, places, family veterans etc. If he is unable then the next best thing is talk to your father about his memories of his childhood and any family stories he remembers overhearing as the “grown ups” talked at family gatherings.

As far as I can determine with the information I can find online, your Norbeck line and mine are different.

If you want to surprise your grandfather then check with your library or subscribe yourself to look up and print out the U.S. Census pages from 1850 to 1930 as I find your family has been living in Allen Co. Ohio since then with ancestors coming from PA before settling OH. By the way your family is listed as Norback as well as Norbeck. It should be pretty easy for you to do research as all your ancestors from Conrad Norbeck/Norback b. abt 1813/1818 in PA to you should be in the county courthouse and library as well as local cemeteries of Allen County.

1930 OH Allen Co Bath Twsp your grandfather Robert is 3 yrs old, youngest son in the household of James NorbEck, b. abt 1883/84, wife Goldia b. abt 1887 both in OH

1920 OH Allen Co. Lima Twsp head of household James H. NorbAck, wife Goldie B.

1910 OH Allen Co. Spencer Twsp hh: James NorbAck wife Goldie

1900 OH Allen Co. Spencer hh: David NorbAck, b. Aug 1851, wife Elizabeth b. Sept 1863 with oldest son John H. b. Oct 1883 all b. OH

1880 OH Allen Co. Spencer Twsp hh: Conrad NorbAck b. PA with son David b. 1851 OH -you can see this census for free from Ancestry.com or www.familysearch.org . At Ancestry the surname is listed in index as Worback with a correction to NorbAck by someone. Don’t know how it is indexed at LDS website.

Conrad is listed in OH Allen Co as Norlock corrected to NorbAck in 1870, NorbEck in 1860, and NorbAck in 1850 census.

Ancestry has WWI and II Draft Registration cards online and your great grandfather James wrote and signed his name James NorbAck b. Oct 9th 1883 on WWI card and James H NorbEck b. Oct 9th 1882. (index has Oct 7th) on his WII Card.

As I stated earlier my ancesors were named Erickson in Sweden and Louis was renamed Norbeck in the Swedish Army and immigrated with the name to the US abt 1866. According to my dad all first born sons were to have the middle name Erickson as my great grandfather has. His son Robert should also be Robert Erickson Norbeck b. 1888 but I find a census where his middle initial is J. My great grandfather Andrew was Louis’s only son and Robert was Andrew’s so until I find descendants of my Robert Norbeck as far I know the middle name Erickson is no longer being used. I was lucky enough to have my father remember when his grandfather Andrew came to live with them and the family information that was passed on . Sadly my father passed away 2 weeks after he had a reunion with long lost family that had been seaching for him and his mother since 1957. (Isn't the internet fantastic!!at least for genealogy)They had pictures of my father as a baby, his mother as a baby and his grandparents Andrew and Cora Norbeck that my father didn't know exsisted. So as I stated earlier run to your grandfather and father for information and family stories.

At www.rootsweb.com search Conrad Norbeck and there are 4 listed in the WorldConnect Family Tree Project. Yours is Conrad Norbeck marred to Catherine Hackenburg.

Good Luck and have a Happy Thanksgiving

Denise Simmons
He is Robert Norbeck also and just turned 81, my father is Robert Norbeck II. If you respond maybe we can help each other out with some roots....
Robert Norbeck
