CHESTERHILL, OHIO - Robert Ray Norris, 62, of Ohio 376, McConnelsville, Ohio passed away at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at his daughter's home in Malta, Ohio.

He was born April 15, 1947, in Ravenna,Ohio to the late Jay Norris and Naomi Norman McPeek. He worked for more than 20 years at Federal Mogel in McConnelsville. Robert was an Army veteran of Vietnam and a member of the V.F.W. Post 4713 in Malta.

He is survived by one son, Eric (Tammy) Norris of Chesterhill; three daughters, Margaret (Cornell) Hale of Columbus, Ohio Traci Norris of Columbus and Shalia (Derek) Fisher of Malta; three brothers, Roger and Bill Norris of Chesterhill and Jeff Norris of Pennsville, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and his long time companion, Marilyn Tabler of McConnelsville, Ohio.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Mount Hermon Church, with the Rev. Delbert Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hermon Cemetery, with veteran services provided by the Morgan County Veterans Association.

Henry Norris (1640/1-1706) of North Mundham, Sussex and Elizabeth, New Jersey

I would enjoy hearing from others working on Henry Norris and his wife Abigail Stratton. I believe Henry was not a grandson of Edward Norris (1589-1659), minister of Salem, as suggested in Hatfield's History of Elizabeth, New Jersey...(1868), p. 165.
Henry's wife was from East Hampton, Long Island. Another East Hampton resident, Thomas Chatfield (b. ca. 1621-d. by 1687), had a proven nephew named Henry Norris, and I believe that this is the individual of that name who appeared in the Elizabeth Colony before 1670.
This Henry's father was a carpenter who lived in the parish of North Mundham, Sussex before he leased property in 1648 in the Little London neighborhood of Chichester, Sussex.

I have found a old family Bible that has lots of Norris family listed in it. It is info from the mid to late 1800's and very early 1900's. This bible was found in Pickens Co, SC so the family must be from this area. This is some of the names listed;

I am descended from James W. Norris, b. 1804 in Phelps, Ontario, NY. and his first wife, L. Marlett, (through his son Joseph.) James W. Norris had 7 children that I am aware of. They are Joseph M. Norris- born abt 1832 NY, James Norris - b. abt 1834 NY), Oliver Norris - b abt 1834 NY, Emily Norris - b. abt 1837 NY, Mary E. Norris - b abt 1841 NY, Charles Norris - born about 1848 NY, and George Norris, born abt 1850 NY. All were born in New York and lived in Nunda, Livingston Co., NY. The youngest two, Charles and George, were likely sons of his second wife, Adeline DeMott Brunson.
I know that Joseph, Emily, Mary, and Oliver moved to Michigan and settled in Ionia and Montcalm Counties.
James W. Norris died in or after 1880 presumably in Nunda, Livingston, NY, but I cannot confirm. In that census, his parents were listed as born in NJ.
I have the names of the spouses of James W. Norris' children, and some info. on most of them.

Mrs. R. E. Norris of Fayetteville today received word of the death this week in Muskogee of her cousin, James Oval Walker, a graduate of the University of Arkansas who was married in Fayetteville in 1923 to Miss Bartney Thomas, formerly of Fayetteville.
Walker, at the time of his death was connected with the Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company. He held the degree of bachelor of electrical engineering from the University, class of 1921. He was a veteran of the first World War and held high offices in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and also was a member of the VFW Marine post in Brooklyn as well as an officer in the Society of the Third Division, AFF. Funeral services were held yesterday in Muskogee.

I'm at my head beating against the wall moment!!! William Isaacs (b- 1827), son of Solomon Isaacs and Lillian Giles of Watauga Co., NC married Sarah Norris (b- 1833) of ? NC. They were married in Buchanan Co. Missouri (1850). I'm looking for any, and I do mean ANY information on her parents. The Sarah Norris' I've found in NC don't really match up. William later died in Kansas and she remarried Michael Baker in Jackson Co., Kansas. I don't know why Sarah ended up in Missouri, and don't have any idea who her parents are. Can anyone help on Sarah?

Found this on the Lacey Board.
"George Lacey m. Nancy Norris (1817-1876)- an interesting story: Illinois Laceys weren't sure of Nancy's maiden name but knew she had red hair and fell overboard the ship on the voyage from Ireland to America. The "overboard story" is told by Allegheny County Norrises too."

I am searching for information on B. Norris, of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. He was my great-grandfather, and I would like to know more about him. Unfortunately, my grandmother doesn't recall his first name, as she was raised primarily by her step-father, Rex Bottom.

B. Norris would have married my Gr.Grandma, Esther Lorine Tolson, somewhere between 1916 and 1931. They would have had a daughter, Eva Mae, somewhere around 1926. I am not aware of any other children as a result of this marriage. I know this isn't much to go on, but I would welcome any help as I have hit a dead-end.

I'm looking for information on Edgar August Norris. He was born on 5 Aug 1889 in Chicago, Il. He arrived in Hartford, Ct about 1909. Edgar married Mabel Nichols Fisher and they had three children, Edward, Irving and Elton. Edgar died in Hartford, Ct 18 Jun 1934.

James L. Norris, 66, of Zanesville, Ohio died unexpectedly Sunday, July 13, 2008, at his residence.

He was born on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1942, in Zanesville, the son of the late Charles "Chun" and Mina Mae Holbert Norris. He was employed most of his life as a cook, having worked many years at Bethesda Hospital, was a member of Church of God and Saints of Christ and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Norris is survived by a daughter, Julie (Eric) Norris-Lee of Columbus; a son, James L. Norris Jr. of Columbus; a brother, Ronald (Sharon) Norris of Zanesville; his loving friend and companion of 26 years, Joan Wilburn of the home; three stepchildren, Jerome and Jerard Rogers and Helen Copeland of Columbus; and six grandchildren, Charli, Erin, Daja, Jamyla, James III and Jamia.

Calling hours will begin at 11 a.m. with funeral services at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at the Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, with Elder Justine Sowers officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Neeld, of Normal, has received several inquiries of late from Stern & Williman, a real estate firm in Local county, Ia., in regard to one Daniel Norris, who lived in this county in [blurry print: 1868 or 1888?], and made conveyances of certain lands in Iowa. The firm is anxious to ascertain whether Norris was a single man at the time of making the deeds.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Pfc. Kyle P. Norris, 22, of Zanesville, Ohio, died May 23 in Balad, Iraq, from wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during a patrol May 22 in Jurf as Sakhr, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rebecca Jane Norris, colored, wife of John Norris, will be held at two o'clock Monday afternoon at the home, 534 Beech street. rev. A. C Mayle pastor of the West End Wesleyan Methodist church, will officiate. Buriaul will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Mrs. Norris died late Friday night at her home. She was 81 years old.

She was a member of St. Paul A. M. E church.

Surviving are her husband; two sons Harvey and Louis, this city; a daughter Mrs. Elsie Guy, this city and a brother, Adams Norris also of Zanesville.

Grainger County } On the 20th day of November 1820 personally appeared in open court of pleas and quarter sessions for the county & state aforesaid, and being a court of record, William Norris, aged sixty-eight years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the acts of Congress of 18th of March 1818 & the 1st of May 1820, that he the said William Norris Enlisted for nine months, some time in the year of 1788 [sic] or 1789 [sic] in the State of North Carolina in a company commanded by Captain Cowan in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Adam Little, in the line of the State of North Carolina on the Continental Establishment; that he continued to serve in the said Corps until the year of 1780 or 81 when he was discharged from the service in 1780, or 81in the State of South Carolina, that he was in the battle of Stover(?) in South Carolina, and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services, except the affidavit of John Lovel and the rolls of the War Department, and in pursuance of the act of the first of May 1820, I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby to diminish so as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in land & naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary War, passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that he have not, nor has any person in trust for me, any property or securitys, contracts, or debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereunto annexed and by me subscribed, & that he the said William Norris is a farmer by occupation & shortly after he was discharged from the service of the United States, he was thrown from a horse & got his hip-joint dislocated & his thigh broken which renders him unable at times to labor in any manner, & that his family consists of himself & one daughter 30 years of age, very unhealthy, scarcely able to maintain herself by her labour. FRANKFURT, Germany - Charles "Buddy" Edward Norris Jr., 75, passed away April 2, 2008, at his home in Germany.

Buddy was born on Christmas Eve 1932, in Zanesville, Ohio, son of the late Charles "Chun" Norris Sr. and Mae Holbert Norris. Zanesville was home until 1966, when he moved to Germany with his family. He will be missed by all who knew him. Buddy never met a stranger and always shared his heart and smile with everyone.

He is survived by son, Keith (Ines) of Germany; granddaughters, Jennifer and Alexandria of Germany; and ex-wife, Lee of Germany; brothers, Ronald (Sharon) Norris and James Norris of Zanesville, Ohio; and many nieces and newphews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Norma Jean Flood and Lorretta Mae McBroom of Zanesville; and brother, Carl Franklin Norris of Nebraska.

John R. Norris, 83, of Nashport, Ohio died Monday, March 24, 2008, in Kissimmee, Fla while vacationing.

He was born June 23, 1924, in Zanesville, Ohio a son of the late Basil and Nellie Mae Simmons Norris. He was a graduate of Lash High School. He joined the Army during World War II and served in North Africa, Italy, France and England, during which he was awarded three Bronze Stars. He was a member of American Legion Post 29, Masonic Lodge of Amity 5 for more than 60 years and the Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons of Ohio. His employment career included work at Sears, Roebuck & Co., Detroit Harvester, Shellman Plastics, Racine Hydraulics and Dana Corporation, from which he retired in 1986. John was a member of the Muskingum United Presbyterian Church.

John leaves his wife, Maxine Roberts Norris, to whom he was married for more than 60 years. John will be missed by his children, Daniel Arnold Norris and wife, Alecia, of Zanesville, Ohio; Karen Norris Davis and her husband, David, of Lancaster, Ohio; Patrick and wife, Holly, of Zanesville and Rex Norris of Winslow, Maine. Rassie Norris, aged 13 or 14 years, son of Mr. James Norris, died at Ardmore and his remains were shipped here for burial Monday, the interment taking place that evening in Ravia cemetery. Mr. Norris brought his son home from Arkansas three months or so ago for treatment, and he was carried to Ardmore and placed in a sanitarium, where we learn he was successfully operated on several weeks ago and a tumorous growth removed from his bladder, but consumption set in and in his weakened condition he fell an easy victim to this dread disease. The Herald extends sympathy to the bereaved father and relatives.

In researching the Bishops, I believe that S. Newton Bishop and Nancy Brown were married in Pike County in 1847. In the 1850 cenus of Upson County, GA I found Spencer, Nancy, and Lemuel C. In the 1860 Census Georgia Militia District, Upson County, I found Spencer and Nancy with 7 children LL, CRA, Wm L. SL, AL, SA, and E Bishop). I am hoping that one of those children was Arabelle or Belle Bishop. In the 1870 Census, Georgia, I found Spencer and Nancy with 9 children. I am trying to connect Arabelle Bishop with them.
In the 1880 Red Bone, Upson, Georgia census,
Nancy Bishop is listed as a widow, and only 4 children remain at home with her. Georgann, Henry J., Sidny N, and Leeanna. I know that in 1875 Arabelle married Wm. A. Norris and so she is not listed on the census with her mother. My problem??? I can't find the name Arabelle, or Belle Bishop on any of the census listed with her parents.
I found Arabelle Norris and William Norris living in the next household on the 1880 Redbone Census, BUT my grandmother Luneata (ludie) (her last child)wasn't born yet.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? Please help?

Susannah's parents were John and Catherine (Jean and Catrien). Thomas moved to Orange Co, NY. Descendants in area and then Long Island. Helena A. (Lena) Zander was born on November 30, 1878 in Germany, the daughter of Peter and Margarethe Zander. According to Census Records, she immigrated to the United States in 1895-1897. I first find her in the Census in 1910 in Sherman Twp., Iosco County, Michigan. In 1910 and 1920 she is listed with her husband William Norris and children. The children are John A. 1901, Margaret E. 1903, Beulah Minnie 1904, Daniel J. R. 1906, Carl F. 1908, Forrest William 1910 and Grace C. 1912. Helena died in 1929 in the Bay City Hospital in Bay County. She is buried next to her husband in Tawas City, Iosco Co., MI. All of the children are listed as being born in Michigan with the exception of John A.; in 1910 he is listed as being born in Illinois. In the 1930 Census of Iosco Co., John A. 1901 is listed as a stepson of William Norris. I have not found the marriage record of William Norris and Helena Zander, but one must assume that they were married between 1901 and 1902, and that John A. had a different father than the rest of the children. Margaret Norris married Oliver John Johnson in 1925 and Beulah Minnie Norris married Kenneth Martin Pringle in 1925.

I have not found the immigration record of Helena A. Zander. I wonder if Helena first immigrated to Chicago with her family and then moved to Michigan in 1901. William Norris is in the 1900 Census of Iosco County, but he could have been in Illinois for a year or two around 1901, it is a mystery to me. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who is researching this family.

A Chickasha Man, Who Shot His Wife, Afraid of a Mob

Chickasha: James A. Norris, a stone cutter, shot his wife after a bitter quarrel, in which he accused her of infidelity. The woman received two bullet wounds from a 41-caliber revolver, one in the shoulder and one in the head; the latter of which may prove fatal. When Norris was arrested he asked the officers for protection as the feeling among the citizens is running high, and he fears that he may be lynched.

CHESTERHILL, OHIO — Ronald Lee Norris, 69, of State Route 555, Chesterhill, died at 4:56 p.m. Monday (Dec. 17, 2007) at Riverside Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.

He was born May 14, 1938, in Bern Township, a son of Willard Norris and Maggie Hill Norris. He was a construction worker for Local 639 of Marietta, Ohio for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, Eloise “Sissy” Dalton Norris of Chesterhill; two daughters, Brenda Mayle of Malta, Ohio and Barbara (Jerry) Rush of Chesterhill; two brothers, Melvin Norris of Amesville, Ohio and Gary Norris of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Carrie Young, Heather Myers, and Corey Rush; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward Norris; and three sisters, Donna Mayle, Goldie Stevens, and Garnet Norris.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Herman Cemetery at Chesterhill, Ohio with Pastor Phillip Mayle officiating. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill.

Can someone tell me where the middle name Samuel was found for John Norris listed below, where the information for all of the wives was found, and the children listed with John Samuel Norris and Nancy Brown? Has anyone been able to prove any of this information or can you at least provide the documentation used to determine these facts?

Any links with William Arthur Norris (b 1877) married Lillian Matilda Tremelling (b 1883) and married in St James the Great on 05.04.1913. They had a son Roy, an architect, who we believe emigrated to Tasmania.
Also a brother George Henry Norris (b 1875) married Maud Lavinia Jenkins (b 1874) who married in Devonport in 1904. I have traced most of the others, but stuck on these two links. There is also a brother Edward (known as Teddy) who was known in the area as a boatbuilder. Any recollections?
