Hi. This is the information I've been able to collect on James Northam:
"James Northam, immigrant ancestor, was born in England. He settled in Connecticut, as early as 1640 (Connecticut Rec. i., p. 45), and at Wethersfield, in September, 1644 (ibid L, p. 110). Other references to him occur under dates of 1648-55-58. He was admitted a freeman in 1658. He was one of the seceders who agreed to leave Connecticut and locate at Hadley, Massachusetts, but he died before 1662."

--William Cutter, Genealogical and Personal Memoirs relating to the families of the state of Massachusetts, 1910.

Another reference:
"NORTHAM, JAMES, Hartford 1655, may have been, 10 yrs. bef. at Wethersfield, freem. 1658, was engag. next yr. with the seceders, who would rem. to Hadley, but he was not able to fulfil his design, and d. bef. 1662. He m. wid. Isabel Catlin, had only Samuel, yet it may be he was by a former w. His wid. rem. to New Jersey, but aft. to Hadley, where she m. Joseph Baldwin. SAMUEL, Hatfield 1674, s. of the
preced. m. that yr. Mary, d. of John Dickinson, had Samuel, b. 4 May
1675; Mary, 7 Jan. 1677; Elizabeth 1 Apr. 1680; and Jonathan, 18 May
1682; rem. to Deerfield, but in 1715, with s. Jonathan, was of Colchester, where he d."
--From A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY
of THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND,
SHOWING THREE GENERATIONS
OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE MAY, 1692,
ON THE BASIS OF FARMER'S REGISTER.
--BY JAMES SAVAGE,
FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE MASSACHUSETTS
HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND EDITOR
OF WINTHROP'S HISTORY OF NEW ENGLAND

So he may have been born in England, and was probably married before, and his son may also be of that previous marriage. I got these references off the internet so I have no documentation, but maybe it's a starting point for you. Good luck!

No, Audrey's husband is a descendant of the sister of Rachel Buckner, John's common law second wife. The cousin I was speaking of is a descendant of John's sister. We have been researching John's ancestral Northam line. I'd like to take this discussion off rootsweb but I have no way to contact you.
Saralie

Yes, Robert Northam (b. ca. 1673, ENG?; d. 1745, Newport, RI) DID have a brother, Captain John NORTHAM (b. ca. 1678, ENG?; d. 1742, Newport, RI.)

I have not found any details regarding John, so I am hoping that someone can discover the identities of Robert and John's parents in England. Since John was a "Captain", he may have transported NORTHAM family members from England to America.

Sincerely, Dr. Frank Davis

Hello,

I don't know if you are connected to this branch of the Northams or not, but its worth a try. My husband's grandmother was Virginia Mae Northam, b. June 26, 1893 in Accomac Co. In the 1910 Census the family is in the Lee District. Her parents were: John Northam Jr. and Mary Spence. John Northam Jr.s parents were John W. Northam and Kissiah Emily Spence. John W. Northam's parents were John C. Northam b. 1813 and Elizabeth b. 1812; and Kissiah's parents were John Spence and Leah Guy. Any connections?

Debra Miller

I have seen an Eli Northam on 1850 census of Guildford Co. NC, but he is much younger. I think his father may have been a George Northam and may have come from Accomack Co. VA as there is a Thomas Northam on same census age 74 b. in Accomack. Trying to locate researchers who know about Thomas.

Hello, Jan.
The earliest Northam we are researching is Thomas shown in the 1850 Guilford Co. NC census as b. in Accomack Co. VA ca. 1776. I have his will which names sons George, John and Henry. Henry is our line. We are pretty sure these are the right family becaus Henry's daughters were legatees of Absalee Northam shown on the census with Thomas and also named in his will. Henry went to Illinois mid 1850's. I think John is ancestor of Mary Lou House of Texas. Have you been in touch with her?
Anyway. Can you figure out if this Thomas is son of the George you mentioned? Same George that is Sharon Gregg's ancestor? She sent me a message today also.
The Eli and Thomas I see on 1850 Guilford census look like siblings, possible children of the George shown living near Thomas. That George m. Harriet Winters (2). The John and Henry living next door to each other I believe are the children of Thomas b. 1776.
Would really be grateful if you could help me sort my Northams out. There seem to be so many in NC and VA.

Hi, Sharon:
I was going through some old papers sent to me by Mary Lou House (a descendant of Short and Northam in Guilford NC) and realized I had the will of Thomas. This Thomas was b. Accomack Co. VA per the 1850 Federal Census of Guilford. His wife was b. in Maryland which is next to Accomack County.
He names sons John, George and Henry. Then daughters Absalee, Mary wife of Salathiel Fisher, Betsy wife of Asa Hodgin, Nancy --- of Yancy Bartley, Rachel wife of Smith Benefield and Louisa wife of Newton Polk. There is a George Northam age 48 and wife Harriet in that same census. Of course I don't know if that is Thomas' George or not or your George or not.
I do know that the daughter of my Henry Northam (they all went to Illinois in mid 1850's) was a legatee of Absalee Northam so that seems to say that my Henry was Thomas's Henry.
Someone else told me about George Northam who married Sarah Powell 1804, but she didn't know his age and never found him again in census or other records. She did find a Sarah Northam married a Quinby in VA 1816 and assumed that George had died and this was his widow.
Can you fill me in on age and siblings of your George? My Thomas was b. 1776 in Accomack Co. VA.
Yes, I registered with the Northam Family group etc. so you probably saw my name there. Hope to hear from you.
Good idea. I will go to that web site. I feel pretty sure that Absalee is an error for father of Thomas. His daughter, named in will, was named Absalee so I think that is a female name. Also, George age 48 on the 1850 census has a daughter of the same name -- spelled slightly different, but I think that is just a matter of mispelling by the census taker. I don't know the source of the birthdate, but both that date and the Absalee as father were in the original material Mary Lou House sent me. Probably the birth date came from tombstone as I know she has seen it. She is from Guilford County. Maybe I'll write her for a copy of pictures she took of the tombstones there.

Laverl:
I don't know the origin of the name, and there has been some confusion about whether it is always a woman's name or sometimes a man's name. We know for sure that Absolee Northam was a daughter of Thomas Northam. Her birth date is probably 1820's. My thought has been that it was a feminization of the biblical male name Absolum.
It is interesting that your Absolee was in NC as that is where I think ours was born. Our Northams are on the Guilford Co. 1850 census. The other family names there are Short and Jackson.
We probably are not related, but I will keep your information for reference.
Maureen

Sharon: I am now feeling pretty confident that Thomas Northam's father was not Absolee and that someone got confused by the fact the Thomas daughter Absolee left a will. It is looking pretty certain that Absolee was daughter of Thomas and his first wife who died early 1880's. This research came to me from Joan Whitney and Saralie Northam who retained a researcer in NC. Are you in touch with them?
Maureen
Hello,

I have done considerable research on the Birchard family, and have connected the "unconnected" Canadian branch to the first Thomas Birchard who emigrated from Essex, England, to Massachusetts. Emma Melissa was the daughter of Harvey Birchard, my great-grandmother's, Martha, brother. You are descended from one of three brothers who left Vermont, became Quakers, and moved on to Ontario and founded Birchardtown. I have been there and have lots of pictures. I have quite a lot about Harvey and his father, Samuel. I have self-published a book showing all of this, including copies of two original poems I own, written in the late 1700's, by Harvey's grandmother, Jerusha Butler Birchard. All of this consists of pages and pages--far too much to retype. The book was reviewed by the Connecticut Genealogical Society in their publication, The Nutmegger. There are now copies all over the country--I just sent one to a Genealogical Library in Wisconsin.

I have not followed Emma's children forward, but do have 4 of them listed. You can most likely fill in the missing data for the children. There are pages in the book in which you can record your own family line.

If I can be of more help, please let me know. Nice to meet a newly discovered cousin.

Best wishes,

Edna Laughter
