He was birn in 1902. My mom said she thinks his father was Thomas Northcott. Do you know of any other info? My grandpa, Albert, moved out to California when my mom was younger...in the 50's. Please email me with any info...NJ is the closest I have found yet!
-Janell

I have a Henry James Northcote who married Ann Tate (a minor) in 1807 at St. Dionis Backchurch, London. So far, I have two children:
1. Henry Bowes Northcote (1810-1897)
2. James Northcote (1822-1904)
Both sons were born at London, immigrated to Brooklyn, NY, and were artists. They are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY with their wives and some children.

Your Mary Anne Northcote seems like a good fit to this family. What do you think?

Regards- Bev Crifasi

Capt. John Norcott of New London, CT

I have come across much information concerning Capt. John Norcott of New London, CT. During the Revolutionary War he served as a seaman in the Continental Navy as well as aboard Privateers. After the war, John was a sea captain who transported supplies and goods to and from the West Indies. Additionally, he was father of John Norcott of Penn Yan, Yates Co., NY.

I would gladly share my information on Capt. John Norcott with any who are interested.

However, I have hit a "brick wall" concerning Capt. John Norcott's parentage. I would appreciate hearing of any possible leads.
I don't have the answer, but I do have some people who seem to fit with your Henry James Northcote.

I have a Henry James Northcote born abt 1800 who was married to Ann [--?--] at England. They had issue:

1. Henry Bowles Northcote (4 Mar 1810 London-20 Feb 1897, bur at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY, USA)- married Emma [--?--]- one daughter:
a. Emma

2. James Northcote (17 Feb 1822 Hammerton, London-7 Apr 1904 bur at Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY, USA)- married Matilda May and had 9 children:
A. Charles H.- one daughter:
i. Charlotte
B. Stafford Mantle m Ida F.- two daughters:
i. Grace S.
ii. Beatrice
C. Emily May m. Milton Lafayette Hawley- 3 children:
i. Helen May
ii. Ruth Florence
iii. Harold Northcote
D. Florence
E. Edith
F. Franklin J.
G. Harry
H. Harry J.
I. Ida

Henry Bowles and James were both artists who immigrated to the United States and lived at various locations in Brooklyn until their deaths. I haven't been able to get back past Henry James Northcote. They do have a habit of naming their children after family members, which might be helpful someday, but hasn't been so far. The Stafford is particularly interesting as that family is well documented, but so far nothing. Did your Mary Anne tend to use names that seem like family names? Do any of these fit?

The data above are from a variety of sources including the 1851 English Census and the US Census for 1860-1930, cemetery data and family data.
Hello Sandy,
Thank you for your reply to my enquiry about Bessie Northcott.
She was my Grandmother and my father was Ewart Reed Hosgood, her second son.
My grandfather was Arthur William Hosgood, and he and Bessie were married in Hazelton, Pennsylvania in 1890.
What I was hoping to discover is (a) what was she doing in Pennsylvania? (b) did they know each other before they went out there?
Arthur was born in Torquay and Bessie was born in Ashburton, so it seems an unlikely union to have taken place in America.
They were back in England before 1893 because my father was born in Brixham in '93 and Bessie died there in 1908.
Arthur was a stonemason by trade and eventually had a building business in Brixham. Sometime in the mid-1920s he was demolishing a building in Paradise Alley in Brixham when it collapsed, killing his brother Sidney. Was this one of your Sidneys?
I'd love to hear from you again.
David Hosgood.

Just to add intrigue here, I have found that Elizabeth Anne married a Charles Frampton and stayed in the Carbonear area. She had quite a few children but named her first ones Laura Susannah and Edward William.

Mahala Pike's parents where named William Edward and Susannah and still alive when the first 2 children where born

While researching the information given by Tracy about the children. My mother confirmed remembering them taking about Elizabeth from Carbonear and also remembers a relative in Bonne Bay. This was Joesph who sent up shop in Norris Point. Really born by tombstone info on 20 Nov 1849 instead. Died 28 Jul 1932 Norris Point. Married Anne Taylor(1856 - 11 Feb 1947 in Norris Point) 20 Jan 1886 in Bonne Bay. There are 3 children listed close to them
Theopholius 1891 - 5 Apr 1962 who married Annie Florence 1892 - 20 May 1975
Samson T 3 Nov 1888 - 22 Nov 1971 married Violet Jane 1899 - 1989
Ethel 1894 who went to live with Mariah in the 1921 census.

I shsould put could be wrong. I am not positive.

Mahala Pike I have was born about 1816 in Carbonear as was George who is about 1819.

But certainly could be the other Mahala.

I do have lots of information on Mariah Northcott though.

There is one piece of information in Tracy's post that is wrong. He might have married a Mahala Horwood but his wife name should be Mahalah Pike and Henry had a sister named Mariah A but the only siblings I have found. Mariah Northcott married Benjamin Osmond and ended up in the Bonne Bay area.

George had one sister I have found named Elizabeth b 1816 in Carbonear.

Elizabeth Guy m. John Northcott 8 Sept 1844 in Burgeo NL

Her younger sister, Charlotte Guy m. Benjamin Northcott 13 Sep 1857 in Burgeo, NL

They were children of John Mattews and Sarah Bagg. The first child, Sarah Jane Guy m. John Davidge (my great-great-grandfather). The rest of the 10 'Guy' siblings, in order, are: Elizabeth, William, John, Annie, Charlotte, Ambrose, Jane, Alexander, Thomas.

Charlotte and Benjamin had no children. Charlotte Willed her house and property to Sarah Jane(Guy) to John Davidge, Sarah Jane's 3rd child.

My primary search is on the Davidge side, but am open to hear any family history as to the origins of John Davidge b. approx. 1826 in England, possibly Weymouth. I am also looking for Edward Davidge, whose son Frank m. Ethel Helson, children Donald Leslie Davidge and Gladys (Davidge)Brigham. Edward and John may be close kin. The above Donald has identified several photos in our family history book, one of whom appeared to look identical to his grandfather.

Thanks for anyone who can contribute,
Sharon
envisage@esuite.ca

Sharon

Ann Garland Nothcote/Northcott/Northcoat/Northcoate, b.1868, Cornwall

Various sources list the surname with different spellings, e.g. 1881 census NORTHCOATE; 1871 census NORTHCOTT; BMD NORTHCOAT, but sometimes the other information provided doesn't match up (e.g. the mothers' names in the census are different). So I'm wondering if they are the same person.

Has anyone else experienced such variation in spelling with this surname? And which is most likely to be correct?

Does Ann Garland appear in anyone's tree? She was my 2x-great-grandmother.

Bridget Norcott Doyle White

I'm trying to find the ancestors of my great-grandmother, Bridget Norcott, who was born in Newfoundland Aug. 1873. She immigrated to Boston, Mass. around 1890. She married William Doyle around 1893, but he died c.1896-1897. By 1900 she and her three-year-old son, William, were boarders in the house of Michael "Norcet" (I'm 90% sure that this is a misspelling of Norcott) and his mother, Annie, in Boston. (Michael could be Bridget's brother, cousin or uncle? Annie could be her mother or aunt?) Around 1901 Bridget married Edward White, also from Newfoundland. (Michael Norcott may have married a Mary White, too.)

I have the list of Edward and Bridget's children, if anyone would like those, too.

Does anyone have links to any of these folks? Any leads/suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!
