I located more information regarding John Robinson Northcutt, Jr, but it has only created more questions for me! I did finally locate him on the 1870 US Census, but he is residing with another family. Here's the information:

1870 US Census
District 48 West Texas
Limestone County, Texas
Post Office: Eutaw
Enumerated: 1 Jun 1870
Page: 46
Dwelling: 321
Family: 332

Jno R. Northcutt
Age: 35
Sex: M
Race: W
Birthplace: GA

Other people in household:

Springfield, Aaron (47)(SC)(male)
Springfield, cannot read first name) M. (24)(AR)(female)
Springfield, Susan (15)(TX)
Springfield, Eliza (13)(TX)
Speingfield, Alice (11)(TX)
Springfield, William H. (5)(TX)
Springfield, Jack O. (3)(TX)
Springfield, (Cannot read first name) B. (4/12)(TX)(male)
Springfield, William J.A.A. (21)(SC)
Springfield, Missouri (21)(SC)
Springfield, Geo W. (1)(SC)

I am still curious why he appears 2-3 counties over from Hood county, with this particular family. But, Sarah and their 2 boys are living with her father, Henry Sears, for the Hood county census (enumerated 28 Sep 1870). I would think that the rest of his family would have been listed with him in Limestone, unless they were having issues and were separated at the time. Or, if she was visiting her family. When census records were taken, did they only record the names of those present in the household at that moment, or did they typically include those that normally lived there on a regular basis? This would make a diffence in why Sarah and the 2 boys do not appear. Basically, the date of death (30 Oct 1870, in Limestone) could be possible if they were separated and no longer living in the same household, explaining his absence for her census. However, if they were still together, was he not recorded in the Hood county census because they had already counted him in the Limestone census? Or, had he already died at that point (September)? What do you think?
Thank you for your reply to my posting! I appreciate the information regarding his military service, because I had seen the military information online before and I was not sure if it was the same John R. Northcutt. I hate making assumptions in genealogy research, but am I correct in my assumption that William Northcutt’s wife, Mary Francis Sears, was Sarah Sears’ sister? I thought that there was too much of a coincidence that they shared the same surname, and that William & Mary named one of their daughters, Fannie Rebecca.

Yes, can you please give me all the names of William and Mary’s children? Actually, I would love to have any information that you can provide me on the Northcutt side of the family. Although I am related to Sarah Jane Sears through her 2nd marriage to Robert Winfield Crossland (their daughter, Rebecca Jane, was my great-grandmother), Mary & William Northcutt would have been my 2nd great-grand aunt and uncle. And, John Henry Northcutt and William Northcutt, Sarah & John’s children, were my great-grand uncles. So, the Northcutt family is part of my heritage, too.

I would love to have a copy of the letter that you mentioned, because I would like to see the names of everyone that is interred in the Northcutt family cemetery. Do you happen to know how John Northcutt, Jr. died, and why he does not appear on the 1870 census with Sarah and his sons? I was questioning the date of death, because it almost looks like there is a “w” written by Sarah’s name on that census record (in the column regarding marriage). And, she is listed as sharing a dwelling with a “Siers” family. What do you think? Do you know if there are any type of records for Limestone county that indicate John Northcutt, or any other Northcutt, resided there? Thanks for your help!

According to the information by Dollie Northcutt in Northcutt and Allied Families (1939): John Robinson Northcutt, Jr., b. 26 Aug 1842, Chattahoochee Co, GA and d. 30 Oct 1870, Lime Stone, TX. Dollie notes his marriage to Sarah Sears, near Abernathy, AL, but gives no date and notes the names of two children, John and William, with no further information about them.
Dollie notes also the War Record for John, Jr.:
"It is shown by official records that John R. Northcutt, a private of Company H, 10th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, CSA, enlisted June 4, 1861, at Montgomery, Ala. The company muster roll for September and October 1864, the last on file, shows him present. He signed a receipt for pay Jan. 18, 1865, for services rendered from July 1, to Dec. 31, 1864. No later record of him has been found." Official statement furnished August 16, 1937.
By authority of the Secretary of War:
E. T. Conley,
Major General
The Adjutant General

Dollie does show that John, Jr. had a brother William M. who married Mary Sears, near Abernathy, Al. No date is given. William M. died Sept 1920, Gorman, TX, as you know. I have the names of their children if you are interested.

It is possible that John, Jr. is buried in the family cemetery in Erath, TX, but I'm not sure based upon a letter I have that was written by William Winston Northcutt, the GG Grandson of William M. Northcutt. He stated that all the graves are "marked" and provided a listing of the burials. But, his letter was written in 1975 and the first burial in the plot was in 1866. I think it is very possible that some headstones were damaged/lost and some graves may be unmarked. I am happy to send you a copy of this letter. Also, I am in contact with someone who visited the cemetery about 8 years ago.

There is a "John R. Northcutt" in the plot, but he was the son of Alfred Northcutt.

I cannot say the death date and location for John Jr. is totally reliable, but Dollie did a great job on her book.

I hope this helps you.

John R. Northcutt & Sarah Jane Sears

Does anyone have information on John Robinson Northcutt, Jr., the son of Reverend John Robinson Northcutt & Annie Dorsett? According to information I have found, he may have been born 26 Aug 1842, in Chattahoochee county, GA.

On the 1850 US Census, he is in Marrietta, Cobb, GA, and was about 9 years old. On the 1860 US Census, he was in Township 16, Range 11, in Calhoun, Alabama, and was about 19 years old.

He married Sarah Jane Sears, the daughter of Reverend Henry Jefferson Sears & Rebecca Jane Freeman. John and Sarah had 2 sons, who were John Henry Northcutt & William (Billy) Northcutt. I also believe that John's brother, William, married Sarah's sister, Mary Francis Sears.

Both the Sears family and the Northcutt family resided in or near Cleburne county, AL (according to land records), and in Hood county, Texas, (according to the 1870 census and other records). John was not listed with Sarah and his 2 sons on the 1870 census, which was enumerated on 28 Sep 1870, so I assume he died prior to that time. Unfortunately, I cannot locate any reliable information for an exact date and location of death. I do know, however, that he was only 28 years old when he died. And, his 2 sons are mentioned by name in his father's will.

John's parents are interred at the Northcutt cemetery in Erath, Texas, but I cannot locate a burial record for John. And, William & Mary Francis Northcutt are interred at Gorman Cemetery in Eastland county, Texas.

I know that Sarah married Robert Winfield Crossland after John died, and they resided in Mangum, Greer county, Oklahoma. But, does anyone know more information on John Northcutt, Jr.?

My
Great-granny is part Indiana and I believe white. This may have been a
slave name for us. I'm really not sure. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks and look forward to hearing from you. rstenso1@progressive.com
I found this marriage listing in Harrison Co., KY, Marriages 1794 - 1832, 1985: Skinner, John and Northcut, Lebphey, date 13 Jan., 1822. I also have a copy of the probate record for John Northcutt from 1845 in Boone Co., MO, and for some reason there are no heirs listed by the name of Skinner. John Northcutt's wife was named Nancy Henry. Names of his listed heirs include Wells, Oder, and Northcutt. I would like to find information on Sally Northcutt who married William Oder in Harrison Co., KY,in 1812, especially evidence for the names of her parents.
Re: Northcutt in Cobb County GA

I do have a correction to make about one of the children of Alfred Moore Northcutt: the youngest was Tommie Francis (female) and not Thomas.

Northcutt siblings Henrietta and James Brown married Johnson siblings John Newton and Alice.

There is still a mystery about what happened to James Brown Northcutt. He is found in Saco Township, Valley Co, Montana in the 1900 census and is reported to have died there in 1905. I have not been able to locate information as to why he went to Montana (railroad?, mining?), how long he had been out there, or where he is buried.
