It’s been several years since your post. I hope you still monitor this site. Your information seems to be correct. My husband’s great grandfather was Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Northington. A.J. and Ica were brothers and sons of Levi and Sarah (Atkins) Northington. They lived in Lamar County (known as Sanford County at that time) and Marion County, AL. During the Civil War, a group of “Tories” destroyed much of the property on A.J’s farm in Lamar County. (You can get more information about the Tories by searching Google for the words Tories and Marion County Alabama). About this time, Ica Northington took his wife and children to Marion County, AL where they hoped to be safe. However, a group of Tories and Union sympathizers from Winston County raided their property killing Ica and his wife. It is reported that at least one of their children was also murdered. It is also reported that they are buried in Crockrell Cemetery where their gravestones indicate they were killed August 6, 1863. The surviving children were raised by Ica’s sister, M.E, Northington Lochridge. The 1870 Marion County Census shows four Northington children living with M.E, Lochridge [ H.(Henry) age 19, O.T, (Oriann) age 17), Wm (age 12), and J.A, (age 8]. In 1880, William was listed in the Marion County Census and was shown as a boarder, attending school. I couldn’t read the name of the family he was living with. Probably the reason you’ve had a hard time tracing your family beyond William is that his parents were killed when he was very young and he was raised by an aunt. I hope this helps.

Michael Northington of Christian Co KY died in 1822. He is listed in the 1820 Census in Christian County as Mikal Nothington. His will mentions his wife, Temperance, sons Felix and Samuel, and four daughters. He mentions his brother, Samuel, as well. William Northington and Samuel Northington were two of the witnesses to the signing of the will. Was this Temperance Lindsay? Was she the mother of his children? Was his son, Samuel, the one who married Jane Jouett in Trigg County?

I am sorry I don't have any information to give you on Elizabeth Needham, but I am a descendant of Sarah Needham through her marriage to Samuel E. Northington. Are Sarah and Elizabeth sisters? Sarah and Samuel were in Jesse Needham's household in the 1850 Ashe County, NC census, showing Sarah as 20 and Elizabeth as 16. Do you have other information on the Needham family?

Lisa

the missing link

I believe I have found the missing link in my research. I never could get past my ggf William Quitman Northington. After attending a family reunion, I found that Williams father was Ica northington, son of Levi Northington. Both show up in the Marion County[Alabama] 1860 census. The census shows Ica having a son William age 1. This fits in the timeline.
According to HOLTZCLAW's book "Northington" [if I figured this out right] then the Levi I mentioned above is the son of Jesse, the son of Samuel[3], Samuel[2], and Samuel[1].
If anyone sees anything wrong with this please let me know.
