Northway of Devon

I am trying to trace a William Northway who married Ann MAY on 22 March 1852 at Stoke Damerel Parish Church (Devonport). His father was said to be also William Northway and both gave their occupations as carpenters. Ann May I have traced back to Tavistock but cannot find where William Northway came from. I believe it may be him and his family in Okehampton in the 1881 census but no place of birth is given except Devon.
William & Ann had a daughter (amongst others) called Annie Helena Augusta Northway who was born 8th January 1864 in South Pool, Devon (on her birth Cert, Wm's occupation is game keeper)

Anni Helena Augusta was my gt grandmother. She married William Cooper Vivian on 20 October 1887 also at Stoke Damerel.
My grandmother Margaret Northway Trask was the grand-daughter of Ralph Northway, the founder of Northway Motor Corp. I only recently found this out as my sister and I have become increasingly curious about our family history. I remember my Great Grandfather Everett P. Northway, his son, but had no idea that my family history was so interesting. If there is anyone out there who possibly has more information as well as pictures that would be incredible. I have a 7 year old son who would love to hear more about the family of his Great Grandmother whom he never really got to know. She passed away when he was only 9 months old. I have only 1 picture of her holding him before she died.

Hello, I am looking for information on the Northway's who lived in or near Fairbanks, AK probably from the 1950's until they died in an accident somewhere between the 1960's and 1980's. They had a son, Steven Jordel Northway, born 1/20/50. I know that they had some kind of freight company involving a tracked vehicle that could drive over frozen rivers, and a plane. Any information about the family, or the accident, would be much appreciated.

Bernetta/Brenetta Northway

Hi,

I need help finding her (Bernetta/Brenetta). Here is the information that I do have.
Brenetta J. Northway married Amelina M. Davis 13 May 1911 in Clay Co., Indiana.

His name has been transcribed with these four different spellings:
Amelina M.
Amelins M.
Amarcellus
Aurelius M.

On 15 Feb 1912 they had a baby girl in Parke Co., Indiana named Ruth.

There was an article, found in Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana (in the Tribune) for an A. M. Davis, whom was killed in a coal Mine accident on 9 Aug 1915. Then found in Vigo County deaths there is an Aurelius M. Davis that died 9 Aug 1915 at age 31. Seems to be the same guy. The article does not mention anything about his family, just about the accident. The accident occured in Knightsville, Clay Co., Indiana.

The only name close to Brenetta/Bernetta that is found, is in an obit for Mrs Burnetta Davis, where she died of Tuberculosis in Jasonville, Greene Co., Indiana, 14 May 1909. However, this can not be the Brenetta/Bernetta that I am searching, for mine had the little girl in 1912.

I really need some help with this one, if you can help, even just a tiny bit, I sure could use it.

Thanks,
Sheila

Northway family in Missouri

I posted this message a couple years ago. Thought someone might have missed it. Miss Ada Evelyn Northway was like a grandmother to me. I grew up across the street from her. Mr Carson was in touch in years past but I was unable to send material on this side of the family. I have some information concerning this side of the family and would love to see any info on the Northway history. I don't have info on her mother as I type this but have it at home. Her grandparents were William Henry Northway born in Ashlin County Ohio August 9, 1836 and died in Mountain Grove, Missouri June 9, 1906 - Wife was Nancy H Kinder born in Carrol COunty Ohio July 4, 1840 and died in Mountain Grove Missouri May 30, 1914. They had two children Charles E and Cora B. Cora was Ada's mother. Have photos of this family that I could reproduce. Would like to hear from family
Art Morris, artnpd@yahoo.com
Thanks

Trying again.... I can't believe there have only been 4 postings on this board since I originally posted the following message:

My Wife's great Grandmother was a Margaret Northway, who married and died near Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada. She
was born about 1867 and Married a Charles Ecclais Rice (1863-1900)They both died near Morrisburg,Ontario.
Seeking any info on her, her family, where she came from, etc. She seems to be the only one showing up in various census
records etc

I am seeking information re. Samuel Northway III of Norfolk who married Elizabeth Pickett in 1795. They were listed there in the 1800 census but can find no definite record after that. Could he possibly have been the same as the one living in Leroy, Genesee, NY, at the time of the 1820 census?

I am searching for Dwight T. and Therissa Amanda May Northway's descendants. Dwight and Therissa were married 23 Feb. 1855 at Windsor, Ashtabula,OH. Dwight died 18 Mar 1899. Therissa Amanda died 24 Dec 1910. They are both buried in the South Orwell Cemetery OH.

They had five children:

Elbert born 1 May 1857, died 8 Jun 1858

Abigail born 19 July 1859 died 16 Mar 1862 She married Louis K Bugby.

Elmer was born 18 April 1861.

Lucy was born 26 April 1864 and married William A Stevens.

Dennis Luke was born 8 Aug. 1866.

Therissa Amanda May is the daughter of my great grandfather, Samuel May. Until my Grandmother Martha May died in 1924 it appears the families in NE and OH were in contact. After she died the families lost contact with each other.

If you have any knowledge of these people I would certainly appreciate hearing from you.

NORTHWAY, Louisa Belle (FOX), (1877-1955), wife of NORTHWAY, Andrew Jackson (1876-1944)

Source: Unknown

Louisa Belle Fox Northway. Born August 30, 1877, in the Woodland Hills Community, Polk County, Iowa. Daughter of Lucinda Thomas Fox and Van Fox.

Her father, Van Fox, came with his father from Indiana about 1860. He later went back to Indiana for his medical education. While there, he met and married Lucinda Thomas. They came back to the Woodland community where he practiced medicine until he died, still a young man, in 1885. She had one other sister, Ida Fox Oxberger; three brothers -- Byron, and twins, Clyde and Clarence. She was raised by her mother and grandmother, as she was only eight years old when her father died.

The night she was born her father was at a train wreck near Four Mile Creek (near Des Moines, Iowa) taking care of the many wounded. She didn't get to attend much school, as she had to help care for her younger sister and brothers. She worked doing houseword for people in the community and worked for Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Crewse when she was fourteen years old until she was seventeen when she married Andrew Jackson Northway on the 27th day of December, 1894. She died August 30, 1955 exactly 78 years old. Her mother Grandma Cindy died May 5, 1939 at about 80 years old. Both are buried at Warren Powers Cemetery, Polk County, Iowa.
NORTHWAY, Andrew Jackson (1876-1944)

Source: Unknown

Andrew Jackson Northway born March 17, 1876 near Polk City, Iowa. Son of Herman and Susan Brown Northway. His father came to Iowa from New York State about 1846 and had already raised one family. He was seventy years old when Andrew was born, and his wife, Susan was thirty-fix. Susan died when Andrew was three years old, and Herman died when he was six years old. Herman and Susan are buried near Polk City, Iowa.

Andrew was brought to the Woodland Community in Polk County, Iowa when he was eight years old, by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Crewse of that community. He made his home there until he was about sixteen years old. Then he went to live with Doug Johnson of the Woodland Community. He worked for Doug Johnson until he was nineteen years old. He was then united in Marriage to Louisa Belle Fox. To this union were born thirteen children.

He worked as a farm hand and laborer all his life. He worked at the Granite Brick Co., at Hastie, Polk County, Iowa for about fourteen years. In about 1912, they moved to a brick home he had built on a little fruit farm at Hastie, Iowa. They lived there until 1919 when they moved to the community of Adelphi, Iowa, where he and the older boys helped clear 120 acres of timber land for the Morey Estate, cutting coal mine timber and saw logs. They then moved to a farm known as the Gibbs' farm for seventeen years, where he saw most of his children married and leave home. He died February 5, 1944 and is buried at Warren Power's Cemetery in Polk County, Iowa.

Orange NORTHWAY, S. A. NORTHWAY

'Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve', Part One, edited by Mrs. Gertrude Van Rensselaer WICKHAM, 1896 pp.
131-132

Orwell . . . Mrs. Orange NORTHWAY, husband and children moved from New York to Orwell prior to 1840. Congressman S. A.
NORTHWAY, one of their sons, experienced some of the pioneer hardships. His father located in the northeast part of the town, first
building him a log cabin, then felling the trees and clearing away for corn, which was planted by chopping into the ground and dropping in the
seed. Then they had to watch it constantly to keep off the birds, deer, squirrels and coons. Only a few vegetables were raised for the first
year, not a spoonful of wheat flour was in the house, and only one bushel of rye. Corn, in its different forms, was the sole breadstuff. Wild
meat was plentiful. In the winter the children attended school at the center, two and one-half miles away. The tramp through wet weeds or
snow resulted in the thinly-clad boys and girls being sopping wet to above their knees. They would sit in their wet clothes all day, and then
return home added still more to their discomfort, but when they reached that blessed haven of children - home - the wet clothes and stockings
were quickly removed and their feet and limbs soon dried before a roaring fire. THE GOOD MOTHER would rinse out the wet stockings
and hang them up, and they would be dry and warm the next morning, to meet with the same experience of the day before. But childhood
even then was not all unhappiness. How different is the lot of the boys and girls of to-day!

Mr. NORTHWAY's experience, as told by himself, does not differ from many others of that day. Mrs. NORTHWAY was a woman of
latent and great force of character, and to her is due the honor of her son reaching so high a position in life.
NORTHWAY, Dr. William L.

Dr. William L. Northway, "Marcellus, was born in Yates Co., Jan. 6, 1852, son of Luther and Frances (French) Northway. Luther was born
in Hornby, Steuben Co., March 8, 1817, and died June 16, 1893. He joined the Methodist Episcopal church in Corning in 1840. After two
years in Lima Seminary he joined the Genesee Conference, and began his long and successful career as an itinerant. He was pre-eminently a
revivalist. After serving numerous charges he moved to Syracuse in 1873, when he bought the property where the smallpox hospital now
stands, and after living on it three years sold it to the city. He then continued his itinerant work until he moved to Seneca Falls. At Seneca
Falls he quit the itinerant work, taking the superannuated relation. The records of his work show that hundreds were converted through his
labors. As a preacher he was clear, logical and eloquent. Our subject was educated at Macedon Academy, where he began preparation for
college, and finished at Cazenovia. He then went to Syracuse University, and next to Chicago and studied medicine. He was there five years,
and then returned to Marcellus, where he has since practiced his profession. Our subject married Fannie K., daughter of John F. Jones, who
was the inventor of the straw board machine for making a straw board in a continuous sheet. This is the machine now in universal use, being
the only one of its kind. Mrs. Northway was born in Rochester, and moved to Marcellus in 1865, where she has since resided. She married
Dr. Northway, June 5, 1884, and has two children, Leslie G. and Selah Elsworth."

Isaac Northway, "La Fayette, was born Aug. 5, 1805, a son of Zenas and Rhoda Northway, who came to this town in an early day (1806),
where they lived and died, the former in 1843, and the latter in 1832. Isaac was reared on a farm, educated in the common schools, and was
one of the well-to-do farmers of the town, and was also a member of the State militia. In 1833 he married Janet Parkerson, a native of
Haverstraw, and a daughter of John and Polly (Tompkins) Parkerson, who came in an early day to La Fayette. Mr. and Mrs. Northway had
three children: Truman, who lives in Wisconsin; John, who lives in La Fayette; Eugene, who was drowned in 1849. Isaac Northway died
Feb. 22, 1892. He was a correspondent for the Syracuse Standard for five years, and furnished a great deal of information about the early
settlement of the town." Source: Bruce, Dwight H. The
writer, speaking of the old pioneers, states that "of all the early settlers on the old State Road, between Pompey Hill and Skaneateles, he was
the only survivor for the last fifteen years." Now, the writer could have not been correctly informed. On the road mentioned still resides one of
the old settlers, . . . George Northway was the first mechanic in Cardiff. He manufactured wrought nails, and buildings sided and shingled with
nails made by him in Cardiff over 60 years ago, are still standing and in use. . . .
