Norwoods of Franklin County Tennessee

Looking for information on Samuel Norwood of Franklin Co. TN

He possibly had 2 children with an unknown woman..they were Stephen Norwood and Manerva (Minerva) Norwood. Minerva was born about 1830. She may have been my ggggrandmother.
Stephen is found in Mississippi up to 1870. I cannot find Minerva at all. She may have married Enoch West on 1846 in Franklin County, TN.
One story is that Samuel had these two children with a Native American woman. Thus, there may be the link we have been searching for for many years of our Native American heritage.
We have been searching for Minerva West (Woodard), but she may have been married before she married my ggggrandfather, William M. Woodard, in 1848 in Lincoln Co. We may need to start seaching the Norwood connection.
Hope you're not thoroughly confused now.
Thanks for any help out there.

Dicey Norwood, b. abt 1782

Dicey was the mother of Laban W. Norwood (1812-1865)and census data tell us she was b. in VA abt 1782; died in Mississippi (1850)while living with her son, Laban W. Norwood and his wife Martha S.F. williamson (who died in Texas at the home of her son). This DICEY lived in N.C. where Laban W. was born before they moved to MS. However, all the census reports only show DICEY and no husband. When I checked white women named "Dicey", born in VA abt 1782, I was overwhelmed with entries. She could have been any one of dozens listed.

Question: Has anyone ever figured out who this DICEY was and who her husband was?

Thank you I appreciate your help.
Joy Robbins
Georgia

Justice x Norwood

I have been trying for some time now to figure out where in North Carolina my Justice and Norwood families originated. I may have found a clue and would like to throw this out to see if anyone nibbles.

I am researching William Justice (1791 - 1848) and his wife Delitha P. Norwood (1801 - aft 1880). I know that they were both born in North Carolina. Their eldest son, David Washington Justice, was born in Alabama sometime around 1820. I found birth dates and a marriage date for William and Delitha that someone posted, but I have not yet received a reply about where the information comes from and they did not state WHERE these events happened. According to this researcher, they were married in 1819.

I decided to start in NC with the 1790 census through to the 1820 census and see if could find any commonality between Norwoods listed in the census and Justices in the census. So far the counties have not really matched up very much, just a couple of instances, but there is one I find very interesting.

In 1820 there is a William Justice and a William Norwood, both living "East of The South Fork of The Catawba River,Lincoln,NC" William Justice is on page 18 of 33 and William Norwood is on page 13. This seemed an interesting coincidence and I had to post it.

Some other comparisons:

In that same census (1820)in Orange county there are:
Stephen Justice
Elija Norwood
Nathaniel Norwood

And in 1790 in Craven Co we have:
Fanny Norwood
Rebecca Justice
Sylvanus Justice

I am looking for anyone with Norwood roots in Belfast (or immediate surrounding countryside).

My great great grandmother Margaret Norwood was born in Belfast, 1845 to parents Samuel Norwood and Mary Eliza Reddich (or Reddick). Samuel is described as from Belfast with Mary Eliza from 'Ireland.'

My first record for Margaret is in Middlesex County, Ontario in 1868, where she is married to Royal Young and starting a family which eventually moved to the Detroit area. I do not know when or who immigrated from Belfast or if she/they went directly to Canada or to the US first (Royal was born in Pennsylvania).

Thanks in advance for any help!

DNA testing for less

Dear Friends,

The Norwood DNA Project has been growing. Some exciting developments include a new participant from the line of Joshua Norwood, son of immigrant Francis of Gloucester, Massachusetts, whose results are just coming in, and submission of test kits for two English Norwoods from the Kent lines. We are still very eager for male Norwood descendants of George Norwood, son of immigrant William Norwood of Surrey Co., Virginia, to participate in the project. And we would like male Norwood descendants of the other sons of immigrant Francis Norwood: Thomas, Francis, Jr., and Caleb, to participate as well.

(This is not to ignore members of other Norwood families, including those out of Maryland and Bermuda. It is just our current focus to confirm the relatedness of the different Norwood lines.)

Other good news is that you can get DNA test kits for less by using the following link. I'd encourage any male Norwoods to participate in the Norwood y-DNA Project, which, given time, will be a very useful resource for all Norwood genealogists.

http://www.familytreedna.com/lp/sizzling-summer-sale.aspx

Best wishes,

Dick Norwood

http://www.geocities.com/~rnorwood/tnfpexp.htm

http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/norwood

Walter Nathaniel Norwood Obituary

Navasota Examiner and Review January 9, 1902

W. N. Norwood Dead

A Sincere Patriot has Gone to his Reward
Distinguished in War and in Peace - Fire Brigade Honored Chief

Though the event was not altogether unlooked for the announcement of the death of Maj. W. N. Norwood Sr., cast a pale over the city; for it is not possible that any man could be more universally honored and respected than this man of men, who quietly closed his eyes and placed his future in other hands at 8:55 o’clock last night, with his beloved family sorrowfully grouped about his withering frame. And with his last breath then appeared for judgment of the Great Spirit the soul of a man whose earthly aim was to do good in others.

Walter Nathaniel Norwood was born of sturdy parents in Alabama 63 years, 4 months and 8 days ago; was brought to Texas an infant in 1839 when the family located at Washington on the Brazos, in which community the family soon gained more than passing prominence.

Deceased received his education in the old Baylor University at Independence and the school at Chappell Hill, giving up studies in his graduating year to bear his bosom to the bullets of his country’s foes. He joined the Dixie Blues in the 35 Texas regiment and thus was brigaded under the famous Gen. Hood. His company was first commanded by Capt. John D. Rogers. Daring the war he received several wounds one of which near the breast was so desperate that perhaps it ultimately contributed to the cause of his death. After that he served in the commissary department, with rank of captain.

He came to Navasota some 13 years ago and most of that time has been engaged in the cotton warehouse business. Since the formation of the present city fire department he has been its chief, and to his untiring watchfullness and care is due so little credit for the efficiency of that service today. There was no pursuit to hold a closer place in his heart than the fire department, and no one in the department was accorded more personal esteem and consideration than “The Chief”. As several presentations in the past will testify as does also the fact that they would not hear to his stepping aside.

He also served a term as president of the State Firemen’s Association, which commanded several years of his distinguished services.

In 1856 he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Evans at Washington, whom he now leaves a widow with two sons and one daughter, who are Ewing Norwood, cashier of the First National Bank, Shields Norwood, associate in the warehouse firm of W. N. Norwood & Sons and Miss Katie Norwood. The funeral is to take place this evening under auspices of the Masonic fraternity, and attended by Fire Department in a uniformed body, interment in the city cemetery. A more extended characterization of this grand man will be prepared in the near future.

Norwood Y DNA Project

Hello everyone.

I just wanted to remind you all of the Y DNA Project that is trying to sort out the different Norwood families worldwide.

I am writing especially because the project has been growing and some family lines are beginning to emerge from the results. It is exciting because the families in question have good traditional genealogical research to show their descent from their earliest known ancestor.

Three descendants of Theophilus Norwood of North Carolina have nearly identical haplotypes and two descendants of Richard Norwood of England and Bermuda also match very closely. This latter match helped confirm a researcher's work of many years. Other participants have unique haplotypes not yet matching anyone else, but with more participation, it is hoped that they too will match others in their lines.

If you need to know which Norwoods you belong to or just have an interest in genetic genealogy, please consider participating. We really need descendants of George Norwood, son of William of Leckhampton Court and Virginia. Participants descending from Francis Norwood of Massachusetts and John Norwood of Maryland are badly needed--as well as any other Norwoods from any family. I'd like to extend a special call to all Norwoods in the British Isles to consider participating. This could really help us locate the families of emigrants in the mother country.

Please use the link below to go see the current results.

If you'd like to look at prices or sign up right now, please visit:

http://tinyurl.com/6jy4ax

Thank you all for your interest.

Hoping for more participants in the project,

Sincerely,

Dick Norwood
--

The Norwood Family Page http://www.geocities.com/%7Ernorwood/tnfpexp.htm

The Norwood Y-DNA Project http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/n/norwood/

Norwood Families of Georgia & ?

I would like to compare and/or share some research with other Norwood family researchers --- researching the Norwood's of the state of Georgia --- in hopes to maybe break through this brickwall with my Great Grandmother, Lumina (Loumina/Luemina) Norwood Farmer's "Norwood" family.

This is all I know at this time:

William Norwood (William W. Norwood or William W. W. Norwood?), born 22 Feb 1840 (this birth date was submitted by another researcher. I have not been able to confirm it). The only Census I've found him in has been the 1880 Black Ankle, Heard Co., GA Census. He gives his birth state as Georgia, and his parents birth state as Georgia (The other researcher says this info is wrong. I can not confirm this).

William was supposed to have married circa 1873 to Caroline A. Thomaston, in Georgia, and he is suppose to be buried in the Centralhatchee Baptist Church Cemetery in Heard County, GA.

They had 7 known children:

Wesley Norwood, b: __ Feb 1873, Georgia.
Ella Norwood, b: __ Aug 1874, Georgia.
John E. Norwood, b: 23 Mar 1878, Georgia.
Lumina Norwood, b: 08 Feb 1880, Heard Co., GA (my g. g. grandmother).
Beatris Norwood, b: 13 Dec 1882, Heard Co., GA.
Thomas Jefferson Norwood, b: 05 Dec 1885, Heard Co., GA.
Pickley Norwood, b: __ Feb 1889, Heard Co., GA.

I'm looking forward to hearing from anyone else researching in Georgia for the Norwood families. Thanks! TJ

Theophilus Norwood issue

I am descended from the Theophilus Norwood branch (the one who was born in 1755 in Augusta VA and died July 9, 1789 in Abbeville, South Carolina and married Eleanor Middleton born 1757 and died April 13, 1787 in Abbeville, SC - kids were James Richard Norwood, Samuel Porter Norwood and John Middleton Norwood). I believe he also had a brother named Zachariah.

I am trying to find out who this specific Theophilus' (b. 1755) parents were. I have seen several different variations of this one being descended from another Theophilus (born 1721 in SC and died in NC) who had married a Elizabeth St. George and then a Margaret Dawson.

I have also seen a variation that this specific Theophilus' (b. 1755) parents were a Samuel Norwood (b. 1707/8 in MD and d. 1790 in SC) and Elizabeth Brush (b. 1730 in VA and d. 1761 in Sc).

Can someone please confirm which is correct and show some form of proof?

Thanks!
The 10th Annual Norwood Reunion is scheduled for the last Sunday of April, --April 27th 2008.
TEN YEARS AND GOING STRONG!
COME EARLY – DOORS OPEN AT 2:00 PM
There will be refreshments before dinner.
Dinner at 5:00 PM catered by Mountain Gate of Thurmont, Maryland
Descendents of Captain John Norwood and their cousins--see list of family names below.
The Fire Activities Building
Twin Arch Rd. and Rt. 27
Mt Airy Maryland

Reservations are needed by April 16th
TO: Mary Norwood 4115 Harrisville Road Mt. Airy MD 21771-8211.
Make checks payable to Mary Norwood --Check out the details and costs at the Frederick County Genealogical Society under Special Events.
www.frecogs.com/SpecialEvents.htm or email
norwoodreunion@ourmarylandfamilies.com

We will have a digital camera, lap top computer, and scanner. We would like the old photos of individuals or group family photos and some present day ones also especially if they can't attend. Obits wedding birth or death announcements are also very important for filing in the pieces. Do you have a pile of unidentified pictures? Bring them along too. Maybe we can find family resemblances!

The following are the 50 or more count of surnames in the Norwood family lines. We have accumulated over 13,500 descendents of Capt. John Norwood of Maryland and each year we add thousands. And we also don’t have all the branches input yet.

Kinzie (50), Davis (53), Green (55), Gibbons (57), Gartrell (59), Hyatt (59), Darby (61), Miller (61), Purdum (61), VanSant (62), Mullinix (64), Falconer (65), Brown (66), Fahner (66), DeVilbiss (72), Thompson (86), Browning (87), King (87), Burdette (89), Hood (96), Mitchell (97), Beall (110), Ford (111), Baker (133), Conaway (134), Smith (134), Brandenburg (150), Hobbs (157), Ridgely (159), Bosley (167), Day (212), Wivell (221), Watkins (267), Moxley (295)

Because so few of Capt. Norwood’s descendents carry his surname (only 1000 or so), this reunion has evolved into an “old families” of Maryland reunion especially the families of Frederick, Montgomery, Carroll, Howard--(the four corners area) and Anne Arundel. But we touch just about every other county in Maryland and Washington DC too!

Do you have a relative who happens to have the first name or middle name of Norwood? Wonder where it came from? Maybe they are descendent from a female branch of Norwood. Do you have a great female relation with no surname?

My 6th great-grandmother was Elizabeth Norwood who married Nehemia Moxley. At past reunions I have met Beall and Watkins who are closer in relationships to me and we come from different Norwoods.

PLEASE COME AND JOIN US—EVEN IF YOU ARE JUST A GENEALOGY FANATIC IN THE AREA.

The rest of us are certifiable. The treatment is meeting others that are of like spirit.

Jane Thursby
All Maryland
Thursby, Stinchecum, Seward, Claggett, McNamara, Cullison, Barnes, Watkins, Muckelroy, Jillard, Norwood, Benson, Snyder, Beall, Keith, Griffin, Oldner, Kennard, Davis Wheatley, Fell, White, Fallin, Kirkley, Musgrove, Hitchcock, Mullineaux, Merrick, Whelerig, Shipley

Norwood of Chicago and Santa Clara Co., CA

Clarence Henry NORWOOD, son of William Henry NORWOOD and Cordelia Mariah DOANE of San Francisco, CA, resided in Chicago, IL after 1900. He married Cora L. MOSS of Missouri on 8 Sep 1904. He died 13 Apr 1930, an accomplished electrical engineer with memberships in the Chicago Engineers Club and the Western Society of Engineers, President of Norwood-Noonan Co. The couple had the following children (source: Bible Record of WH and CM Norwood above):

Clarence Henry NORWOOD, Jr. b. 29 Jul 1905; d. 1 May 1934.

Ruth NORWOOD, b. 2 Nov 1906; m. 12 Sep 1936 Frederick Hartley POSTLETHWAITE.

They resided in San Francisco, where they ran an antiques shop.

William Moss NORWOOD, b. 25 Dec 1913. I have located him on a ship's passenger list out of New York in 1936.

Richard Doane NORWOOD, b. 17 Mar 1921; d. 1953 CA

I am interested in the lives of the last two, William and Richard. They may still be living in their 80's, or may have passed away. Do they have any descendants?

Records checked: I have checked the Social Security Death Index, but find only one William Norwood (25 Dec 1912) who may fit. He died in Arizona in July 1985. No 1913 births were on 25 Dec, and there were no 1913 births without day
and month. I think a mistake in the year would be most likely with a Christmas birthday.

If anyone has information about Richard Doane and/or William Moss Norwood and descendants, I'd be very grateful for a response to this query.

Thank you,

Dick Norwood

9 YEARS AND GOING STRONG
SAVE THIS DATE--- SUNDAY APRIL 29th

9th Annual Norwood Reunion

Sunday April 29 2006

Our Norwood database is getting BIGGER every year but YOUR information maybe just what someone else is looking to find. Since the Norwood family married into so many Maryland families, you may not find a Norwood cousin but you WILL FIND COUSINS.

I personally have found two lines of cousins that are not part of my Norwood lineage.

No games, no auctions, just a fun genealogy-family connecting time!

PASS THE WORD. LET EVERYONE KNOW.

COME EARLY
DOORS OPEN AT 2:00 PM
There will be refreshments before dinner.

Dinner at 5:00 PM catered by Mountain Gate of Thurmont, Maryland

The Fire Activities Building
Twin Arch Rd. and Rt. 27
Mt Airy Maryland

$14.00 per person.

Send money for reservations by April 13th
TO: Mary Norwood 4115 Harrisville Road Mt. Airy MD 21771-8211. Make checks payable to Mary Norwood.
norwoodreunion@ourmarylandfamilies.com

We again will have a digital camera, lap top computer, and scanner. We still want the old photos of individuals or group family photos and some present day ones also especially if they can't attend. Obits wedding birth or death announcements are also very important for filing in the pieces. Do you have a pile of unidentified pictures? Bring them along too. Maybe we can find family resemblances!

See you there---
Jane Thursby--One of the original 5 of the first reunion.

From England to Maryland by the early 1700's and still Maryland.
Researching:
Thursby, Stinchecum, Seward, Clag(g)ett, McNamara, Barnes, Muckelroy, Watkins, Kennard, Fallin, Snyder, Griffin, Benson, Cullison, Shipley, Beall, White, Wheatly, Mullineaux, Lee, Norris, Waugh, Oldner, Davis, Sasscer, Fell, Keith, Benton, Hitchcock, Clark, Moxley, Norwood, Lewis, Tydings, Lamb, Gassaway, Holland, Musgrove

Also through George Schaffer (Chip):
Schaffer, Appel, Dinsmore, Fischer, Yeagle, Suman, Soellner, Franz, Baker, Albert, Miller, Buzzard, Kitzmiller, Loeb, Stougel, Rohr, Turner, Wilson, Schichadanz
GEORGE, or both? Are there multiple Theophilus's married to each? And the children were?

And who was the Theophilus, Tory, that was murdered in SC?

I don't have access to primary sources and secondary sources for this Norwood line are SO confusing. Many times this particular line is just 'cut and pasted' into an ancestral tree, without regard for dates or conflicting info.

I appreciate any ideas. Murion

Does anyone have ancestor info on John M Norwood. He was Serena Norwood's first husband- they had three sons Columbus, Jefferson Davis and Hollie Andrew; the last son is Hollie is the one my husband is descended from. We have info on Serena's Norwood family; she is the daughter of Theophilus Norwood and Sallie Brown. But are having a hard time figuring ancestry for John M Norwood. There was about 18 years difference in Serena and John's ages. He is supposedly from Alabama. and we are pretty sure he was captured and died in Chicago Camp Douglas Feb 21 1865.

My grandfather was born Norwood Walter Woodfield to Mabel (or May Belle) Norwood Woodfield and Victor Woodfield in Portland, OR on 12 DEC 1922. My mother claims that there is a Norwood family book that scopes out a huge family tree going back to England and maybe France, and that my grandfather is in the last generation listed. I think he's related to a Norwood that was in Oregon state politics, but I don't know much more. Does anyone out there have any information on this branch of the Norwood family? I'd dearly love to get my hands on that Norwood book! Thanks!

Thomas Lenoir Norwood NC/TN Civil War

Greetings folks! I am looking for information on Thomas Lenoir Norwood. During the Civil War, he wrote a series of letters to his parents and to his uncle, Walter W. Lenoir (Caldwell County, NC), concerning his military service. These letters are housed in the Southern Historical Collection, UNC-Chapel Hill. Norwood enlisted in Company A, 37th North Carolina Troops, in July 1862, at the age of seventeen (born c.1845). Almost all of the men from Company A were from Ashe County, North Carolina. Norwood rose to the rank of first lieutenant of Company A, was wounded and captured during the battle of Gettysburg, but escaped his captors and made his way back to the southern lines. Norwood, who was in command of company A at the end of the war, surrendered with the rest of the regiment at Appomattox Court House, VA, on April 9, 1865.

What happened to Norwood after the war? I have found, on a online search, a Thomas Lenoir Norwood, born Jun. 17, 1845, to Joseph Caldwell Norwood and Laura Leah Carolina Lenoir. This Thomas Lenoir died on Jul. 28, 1888, and is buried at the Lenoir Cemetery, Lenoir City, Loudon County, Tennessee.

Is this the Thomas Lenoir Norwood who served in Company A, 37th North Carolina Troops? Did he ever marry? Have children? Why did he move to Lenoir City? What was his occupation?

I am working on an article based upon one of his letters, recounting his adventures at Gettysburg. I would like to finish this article by telling folks about the rest of his life.

Thanks for any help.

Regards,
Michael C. Hardy
Boone, NC
Mississippi Norwood Researchers, Need Help Please

I have finally gotten several photos of my 2nd Great Grandfather's gravestone. They have helped me to finally understand him a little better. It seems he served in the Civil War as a Confederate Soldier in the Mississippi Infantry. This could be a clue as to where he was either born or lived as a child. His info will follow this. If anyone has any information on his parents and siblings, please contact me!

William W. Norwood (the W may stand for Wesley)
born 22 FEB 1940, unknown
died 01 APR 1898 in Heard Co., GA.
Buried in the Centralhatchee Baptist Church Cemetery in Heard Co., GA
William married Caroline "Cassie" Ann Thomaston in Georgia, circa 1873.

William W. Norwood served in Company D, 15 MISS INF., Confederate States Army. This info about his military service came from one of the photos. The photo shows a UDC or SCV rectangle marble gravestone. I do not know his military service dates at this time.

Any help in locating the Norwood family that William belongs to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! TJ

Samuel Norwood and John Rogers, Cherokee trader

Hello, Norwood researchers

Does anyone have any information about Samuel Norwood of Tennessee, circa 1800?

Samuel Norwood was issued a pass by Return J. Meigs to visit trader John Rogers in the Cherokee Nation in June 1803.

This record is found in the "Records of the Cherokee Agency in Tennessee." Meigs was the federal government's agent to the Cherokees; Rogers was a well-known white trader who married into the tribe. He lived at the mouth of the Hiwassee River in east Tennessee (Cherokee Nation).

One of Rogers' daughters (Diana) married Samuel Houston, governor of Tennessee and first President of the Republic of Texas.

Here is the verbatim quote from the archives:

"Samuel Norwood has permission to live in the Cherokee Nation at the place of John Mr. Rogers for the term of six months from the present dates and may pass and repass occassionally to visit his friends during the term above mentioned." [27 June 1803].

Who is this Samuel Norwood? I did find a Samuel Norwood listed on the Franklin County, Tennessee, tax list of 1812.

I am a descendant of Samuel Narrad (sometimes spelled Norwood in historical documents) whose daughter Jane married William Gentry. Norwood/Narrad is found in Stewart County, Tennesse, documents of the same time period.

Diana Rogers also married (first) David Gentry, but I do not know if he was related to William Gentry.

Thanks for your help.
--P.
I am having trouble finding more info on my Norwood relatives.
I would like to know the names of Henrietta or John's parents but anything would help.

John Sellers. b. june 19, 1782 S.C. Sometimes his birthday is listed as being 6/19/1772 but I think 1782 is right. His wifes name is Henrietta Norwood b.Nov 4, 1784 N.C. They may have been married in Caswell county N.C.

Their children: Nancy b.1804, Catherine b.1806,
Mary b.1807, Candace b.1808, Martha b.1812,
John W. b.1813, Zilpha b.1816, Hardy S. b.1817,
Henrietta b.1817, Isaac P. b.1819, Richard C. b.1821, William R. b.1824, Joseph b.1825, and
Frances M. b.1826. All were born in South Carolina and the family must have moved to Carroll county Tenn. because records show they were almost all buried there.

I keep finding conflicting records about dates of birth and such. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get reliable information
thanks
