Mathias NOTH

Mathias NOTH came to America from Germany in 1881. Married Maria Gracher (Grager). First child Maria Born August 24, 1882 in Cook County Illinois. Other children, Peter, Matthew, Ed, William, and Rosa. Last name was changed to Noeth. Possibly because typewriters could not put the two dots above the "o" as they did in Germany. Would like info on where Mathias and Maria came from in Germany, and parents and siblings.
Pat Ramsey chance2726@cs.com

Catherine Noth of Chicago & Steinach

To continue my previous posting, Catherine Noth's parents are listed as Johannis Stephan Noeth & Barbara Geis. These surnames, with various spellings, can be seen often in the records of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Chicago. The LDS has the microfilms.

Re: Mathias NOTH in Chicago

My ancestor Catherine Noth (with umlauts) came to America the same year as your Noth ancestors, landing in New York on Feb 5, 1881, with their origin being listed as Bavaria. She traveled with her husband, Georg Reus, and they too settled in Chicago, Illinois. They are also found in the departure list from Hamburg, Germany, leaving 19 Jan 1881, with their town of origin being listed as Steinach. They attended St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Chicago, and the baptisms of their children can be found on the LDS microfilms for that church (with her name also being listed as Noeth). Catherine's husband George's death record from St. Augustine's lists his place of birth as Steinach, Unter-FranK (the K could also be TZ). I have located a couple towns named Steinach, though I believe nowadays there are many with that name. The 2 I've found are north of Schweinfurt, on the northwest edge of Bavaria; and another Steinach on the southeast edge of the Thuringian Forest, on the northern edge of Bavaria. Write if you'd like more info.
